Representing yourself in court? You need not be aloneAn innovative charity called the Personal Support Unit is being set up in Birmingham Civil Justice Centre. It provides emotional and practical support to litigants in person (people who represent themselves in court).

Jimmy Clarke explains why this service is vital for Birmingham and what you can do to help.

For many the very thought of attending a civil court is daunting enough. But imagine if you were attending alone, without legal support, legal advice or even a friend to provide moral support. This is the reality facing thousands of Birmingham residents every year.

People who represent themselves in court are often extremely nervous and stressed. The experience itself can make them ill. Many have difficulty reading or writing. Some have mental illness.

The Personal Support Unit can make a huge difference. The PSU was established ten years ago to provide a simple service to litigants in person. They have a small

team of volunteers in Manchester, Cardiff, London and Liverpool who invest their time and energy into providing practical and emotional support.

A branch of this vital service is currently being established in Birmingham. Now they are looking for a team of volunteers who can give two days a month to help litigants in person practically and emotionally.

You can make a difference by volunteering, making a donation or telling a friend about it. To sign up you do not need a legal background, all you need is intuition and time.

So what are you waiting for? Get involved!

Volunteer Appeal Are you looking for volunteer work that is engaging,

challenging, interesting and rewarding? Who are we? The PSU provide non-legal practical and emotional support to litigants in person (people attending court without legal representation), their friends, families and supporters and other court users in the civil and family courts. Our unique service is free, confidential and independent.

What do we do? We do not give legal advice. We have a small office in the civil and family courts in Birmingham. Clients can book an appointment or walk in to receive guidance from volunteers. Volunteers invest their time, skills and energy to solve clients’ problems and accompany them through the court proc-ess. This could mean filling out a form on someone’s behalf, giving people space to unburden and de-stress, accompany people into court for emotional support or liaising with other agencies to in-sure a client is receiving all of the help they need.

Who are we looking for?PSU volunteers are a mixed group. We consist of retired professionals, professionals on a career brake, part time workers and many more. The one thing every PSU volunteer has is intuition, a calm and mature personality and the willingness to dedicate two days a month to the PSU. The following is a list of typical requirements and attributes that PSU volunteers possess.

No need to have a legal background Ability to work reliably within a rota system Commitment to undertake PSU training Willingness to work within the framework of equal opportunities Willingness to adhere to a policy of confidentiality Ability to listen and communicate with a wide range of people Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing Applicants will be subject to a CRB check and an interview

How to get involved If you would like to get involved, want to speak to somebody about the opportunity or wish to receive more information about the PSU, please email or call Jimmy

Specs Appeal To The StarsAn optician from Edgbaston has become a consultant to the stars, having been asked to supply and fit eyewear for the cast of the recent series of Hustle on BBC1, filmed in Birmingham last year.

Shafik Haji, owner of Eye Opticians on Islington Row, was approached by Hustle’s costume designer for the previous series, to create a pair of glasses especially for actor Robert Vaughn. The producers were so impressed that they asked him to supply all the glasses and sunglasses for the latest series.

The main cast members of the show are seen wearing a variety of designer frames including Tom Ford, Tom Davies Bespoke, EM Eyewear and ic!Berlin sunglasses.

“It was a great experience working with the actors from Hustle and we had a lot of fun putting together various

looks,” says Shafik. “The characters are professional con artists and are often seen in disguise so different pairs of glasses were essential.”

The last episode of series 8 of Hustle was broadcast on BBC1 on Friday February 17 but you can view episodes again on BBC iplayer.

Happy Mother's DayTo celebrate Mother’s Day this month, we take a look at the life of one of Birmingham’s notable females.

Margaret Nettlefold (nee Chamberlain) spent her married life at Winterbourne House which is now open to the public so for a mother’s day outing you can treat your mother to a step back in time to see how the other half lived.

Margaret Chamberlain, niece to Joseph Chamberlain future Mayor of Birmingham, was a matriarch in the truest sense. A product of the late Victorian age, she was interested in art and gardening, studying at the Midland Institute. From letters and diaries of the day, we know she was a very strong person who went on to become an important driving force in her husband’s career.

The young couple had met through their church, both were Unitarians and their families and friends moved in the same social circle. John Nettlefold worked for GKN where Margaret and John’s family (they were distant cousins) had achieved great success in mobilising the company to be the largest screw

Page 21: ED Mar 2012

21

Extract from diary:

Sun 22 Mar 1891 ‘John has gone back to Newport and left me engaged to be married. I shouldn’t be able to express myself properly if I wrote my feelings down. Never mind, it is all there deep down, that is better than having it on the surface.’

(comment: earlier in her diaries Margaret had stated the confusion she felt when John made his feelings known. She was clearly less sure of her own at the time’)

manufacturer in the world. However John’s true passion was social housing and as Chair of the first Housing Committee in Birmingham, the Moor Pool Housing estate in Harborne came into being.

Margaret’s diaries suggest that she was not entirely enamoured with John when he first made advances. Even after accepting his proposal she is surprisingly unemotional and whilst remaining family are clear that they felt very strongly about each other in later life, it was certainly not love at first sight for Margaret at least. As so many other young people of their time, logical matches were made amongst suitable families and love was a bonus rather than a necessity.

An exhibition telling the story of their life together can be found at Winterbourne House and Garden at the University of Birmingham.

A further sister exhibition to ‘Childrens Lives’ at Birmingham Museum and Art Galleries will be on display at Winterbourne’s Coach House Gallery from 2 April, telling the story of the Nettlefold children.

Calling all budding writersDo you have a burning issue you would like to tell the local community about?

Edgbaston Directory is developing its editorial pages and looking for the stories out there that would be of interest to the readers if only they knew about them.

1. We can give your community group a voice.

2. We can help you publicise events in the area.

3. We can spread the word about up and coming musicians, artists, writers.

4. We can raise the profile of issues affecting the wider community.

Edgbaston is a vibrant, diverse and lively suburb that Edgbaston Directory is proud to be a part of and we are keen to represent it within these pages in the best way possible.

A photograph can tell a thousand words, so make sure you have a good selection to support your story, or if necessary we can take supporting photographs.

Deadlines are crucial – we need any content before the 10th of the month for the following months issue and often earlier than that in order to plan it in.

Since the launch of Edgbaston Directory in 2010 we have written about countless events, charities, community organisations and tourist attractions – but we want more!

So don't be shy.

Step back in timeWith a membership to Moorpoool Crown Green Bowling Club. The club is situated in Moorpool Estate, on the corner of Park Edge and Ravenhurst Road, behind the Fishing Pool Harborne.

The bowling green was created around the same time as the construction of the Moorpool estate which saw 500 homes built on a 54 acre site between 1907 and 1912.

The estate was an example of how affordable housing could be provided in the future, many of the original character remains, and all of the original properties remain.

The Bowling Green and Fishing Pool, (the pool is an original pool fed by underwater springs), with the presence of large trees adds to the semi-rural feel of the area and the abundance of wildlife, There is no doubt The

Bowling Green and Fishing Pool are the jewel people with of the estate.

Moorpool Bowling Club has 51 full members and 10 social members. It is a mixed club with member ages ranging from 50 to 91.

The bowling season starts around the 1st of April until 1st October. You can play seven days a week if you chose or once a week, it is your choice.

You do not have to be an athlete, the club caters for all shapes and sizes and most people with disabilities are able to play.

During the playing season there are several social events starting with St

Georges Day Strawberry Cream Tea, this year there will be a Golden Jubilee afternoon event to celebrate Her Majesties Golden Anniversary in June.

In July there will be an evening event where you bring your own refreshment and either have a quiz or games on the green, depending on the weather.

In August there is a BBQ and quiz, in September a Fish and Chip Night with a quiz, and there will also be a Macmillans Coffee Morning in support of the Macmillans Nurses in September.

During October to end of March there is a Tuesday morning club in the Pavilion when you can come and do as you please, play cribbage, dominoes, knit, sew, paint, crochet and play scrabble. On Wednesday afternoons whist is also played in the pavilion.

The club is open to any new ideas to hold events in the winter season.

The club is looking for more members, so if you are interested all you need to do is call and arrange a visit. You do not have to wait till opening day, you can pop down on a Tuesday morning or Wednesday afternoon, you will be made very welcome, come and have a look round, have a try at playing, you are under no obligation to join.
