FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 25, 2012 VOL. LXIII NO. 13

THE NEW COVENANT Today’s first reading is an enormously important passage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disci-ples of Jesus, who see in it a foreshadowing of the Christian dis-pensation. The prophet announces that God has chosen to forgive the people, and that as a sign of divine forgiveness a new cove-nant will be established. Contrasting the new covenant with the one made with Moses on Mount Sinai, Jeremiah says that the new covenant will be written on the people’s hearts rather than on tab-lets of stone. No longer will the community’s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; henceforth, God will speak directly and personally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere outward compliance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one’s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today’s second reading, where the author of the Letter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obedience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him.

Poverty: How Did We Get Here? Why Should We Care? What Can we do about it? Do

Tues. March 27, 2012 7:00 PM ~ Provincial House This two-part program will begin with Bishop Howard J. Hub-bard describing the current situation and its causes against the background of his years of direct service with poor residents in Albany's South End, his long service with the Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development, and his current position as Chair of the American Bishops' Committee on International Justice and Peace. Chris Parsons is Director of the ASPIRE program at the Schenectady City Mission. Her interactive presentation en-gages participants and gives them ideas to implement in their parishes. (Those who attended her workshop at the Autumn Di-ocesan Gathering found it enlightening). A freewill offering will be taken up for Catholic Charities' emergency services fund.

Prayer for the Elect

Father of life and God not of the dead but of the living, you sent your Son to pro-claim life, to snatch us from the realm of death and lead us to the Resurrection. Free these elect from the death-dealing power of the spirit of evil, so that they may bear witness to their new life in the risen Christ, for he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Lord Jesus, by raising Lazarus from the dead you showed that you came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Free from the grasp of death those who await your life-giving sacraments and deliver them from a spirit of corruption. Through your Spirit, who gives life, fill them with faith, hope, and charity, that they may live with you always in the glory of your resurrection, for you are the Lord forever and ever.

“I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people”.

PASTORAL CARE “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel … says the Lord. I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; ” + Jeremiah envisions a time when love for God and others goes way beyond the law. He predicts God’s children will know the Lord intimately and His law will be deeply embed-ded in their hearts. No longer will they be externally moti-vated out of fear of punishment but motivated by God’s love emblazoned in their hearts. In the readings from Hebrews and John’s gospel we hear of Jesus’ anguish as He wrestled with the fears of His pending suffering and death. He chose to do the Father’s will, obedi-ently fulfilling His prophetic life and engraving God’s cove-nant on the hearts of His followers. His transforming gift of a loving heart opens the door to a new way of living for God’s children. Today ask yourself, “Is your relationship with God built on obedience to rules and laws alone?” Do you make choices based on fear or love? Are you motivated by what people think or by what is the most loving thing to do? This week, reflect on your covenant of unconditional love with your Father. It calls each of us to generosity beyond the demands of any law. It is the source of the inner urging we feel to go out of our way to do good. It is this covenant that exhorts us to spend our lives in service to others, even endur-ing suffering and pain for another. How will you respond? Will you respond, “Yes, Lord, I make this covenant with you”?

Go beyond the law.

Go beyond the spirit of the law. Be obedient to a loving heart!
