Cycle challenge raises money for the One Handed Musical Instrument ProjectStephen Hetherington recently set off on his B2B Cycle Challenge riding from Birmingham to Bordeaux in support of The One-Handed Musical Instrument Project with the support of family and friends and Tyndallwoods Solicitors Martin, Harriet and Judy.

There is presently no orchestral musical instrument than can be played with one hand. As a result hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities in the UK, and millions across the world, are excluded from music making.

The project aims to invent new instruments to open full and undifferentiated participation in musical life; whether at school, in the home, or in a professional ensemble. The success of the project will have a profound impact not just on individuals but on society’s relationship with disability, opening new

realms of achievement and possibility.

Stephen Hetherington, the project founder, was setting off on his solo Birmingham to Bordeaux bicycle ordeal, a trip of some 1000 kilometres, taking around ten days and he was sent off with a powerful rendition of The Dam Busters by musicians of the CBSO conducted by Michael Seal shown with Stephen Maddock, CBSO Chief Executive.

Representing yourself in court?You need not be aloneAn innovative charity called the Personal Support Unit is being set up in Birmingham Civil Justice Centre. It provides emotional and practical support to litigants in person (people who represent themselves in court).

Jimmy Clarke explains why this service is vital for Birmingham and what you can do to help.

For many the very thought of attending a civil court is daunting enough. But imagine if you were attending alone, without legal support, legal advice or even a friend to provide moral support. This is the reality facing thousands of Birmingham residents every year.

People who represent themselves in court are often extremely nervous and stressed. The experience itself can make them ill. Many have difficulty reading or writing. Some have mental illness.

The Personal Support Unit can make a huge difference. The PSU was established ten years ago to provide a simple service to litigants in person. They have a small

team of volunteers in Manchester, Cardiff, London and Liverpool who invest their time and energy into providing practical and emotional support.

A branch of this vital service is currently being established in Birmingham. Now they are looking for a team of volunteers who can give two days a month to help litigants in person practically and emotionally.

You can make a difference by volunteering, making a donation or telling a friend about it. To sign up you do not need a legal background, all you need is intuition and time.

challenging, interesting and rewarding? Who are we? The PSU provide non-legal practical and emotional support to litigants in person (people attending court without legal representation), their friends, families and supporters and other court users in the civil and family courts. Our unique service is free, confidential and independent.

What do we do? We do not give legal advice. We have a small office in the civil and family courts in Birmingham. Clients can book an appointment or walk in to receive guidance from volunteers. Volunteers invest their time, skills and energy to solve clients’ problems and accompany them through the court proc-ess. This could mean filling out a form on someone’s behalf, giving people space to unburden and de-stress, accompany people into court for emotional support or liaising with other agencies to in-sure a client is receiving all of the help they need.

Who are we looking for?PSU volunteers are a mixed group. We consist of retired professionals, professionals on a career brake, part time workers and many more. The one thing every PSU volunteer has is intuition, a calm and mature personality and the willingness to dedicate two days a month to the PSU. The following is a list of typical requirements and attributes that PSU volunteers possess.

No need to have a legal background Ability to work reliably within a rota system Commitment to undertake PSU training Willingness to work within the framework of equal opportunities Willingness to adhere to a policy of confidentiality Ability to listen and communicate with a wide range of people Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing Applicants will be subject to a CRB check and an interview
