NHPP 2B2 Heritage Crime

– Some 70,000 listed buildings - 18.7% of the entire stock of listed buildings in England - were last year physically harmed by crime. For some 30,000 listed buildings - or 8% of the entire stock - the damage was substantial.

– Our most precious buildings are the worst affected. 22.7% of grade I or II* buildings were subject to heritage crime last year, compared with 18.3% of grade II buildings. 15.3% of scheduled monuments were affected.

– Churches and other religious buildings face the greatest threat with 37.5% (three in eight) damaged by crime last year.

– Metal theft is the biggest single threat. Around 5.3% of listed

buildings were affected by it, but this nearly trebles for churches, with 14.3% affected last year.

– Anti-social behaviour around heritage assets are commonplace with 12.3% of heritage assets affected last year. Anti-social behaviour is the single most common heritage crime facing scheduled monuments

1. Assessment of significance of C20th faith buildings establishing nature of resource, types of assets and criteria

2. Developing the evidence base for non-Christian places of worship through

(a) completion of a national survey of Islamic faith buildings

(b) scoping and assessing current knowledge of buildings and relevant practices of

minority non-Christian faith groups

•Showcase history of Islamic faith buildings and their part in our national story

•Enhance understanding of the significant contribution of mosque buildings to the architectural and social identity of Britain

•Enable discussions about potentially nationally significant buildings

- rapid thematic assessments of Roman Catholic parish and mass centres (by Diocese)

- rapid assessments of places of worship with a strong focus on Nonconformist chapels

TAKING STOCK

• There are 3,254 Roman Catholic churches in England, of which 625 (18% are listed).

• This represents 3.96% of listed Places of Worship

• Since 2005 the RC Dioceses in England have taken forward ‘Taking Stock’ with grant aid totally £300,000 from EH

• 15 out of 19 of all RC dioceses in England have either completed or are committed to Taking Stock.
