A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 5, 2015 “As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speak-ing say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have revolted against me to this very day. Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you…they shall know that a prophet has been among them.”… “A prophet is not without honor ex-cept in his native place.” We receive information from countless sources – internet, texts, twitter, TV, radio. We are most receptive to positive, pleasing news, things which make us feel good and uplifted. Sometimes we receive the results of a medical test, reports on a condition, that is neither reassuring or satisfying. But the information is important, so that a condition may be addressed. Ezekiel had a unique responsibility to „tell it like it is.‟ He knew those to whom he was sent were hard and rebel-lious. He had a mission. A prophet in scripture is a spokesperson for God. Ezekiel called his people back to the Lord. Jesus‟ hometown people took offense at His teaching. They didn‟t want to hear the challenge He pro-posed. The church today needs prophetic voices. Pope Francis‟ messages are pleasing to most, yet he corrects and directs. Archbishop Romero‟s voice was silenced by an assassin‟s bullet. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, spoke through kindness and compassion. May we all learn to hear and listen to the voice of God directing us through the Spirit.

Vacation Bible School Information

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for Monday, July 13th through Friday, July 17th. Registration packets are available in

the back of the Church. Erin Burke will again lead our VBS team. We are seeking new volunteers and invite back all

who did such a great job last year. Even if you can only help for one or two days, please volunteer. The success of this

Our Diocesan Catholic Charismatic Renewal is sponsoring its 33rd annual conference at the University of Scranton during the weekend of July 31-August 1. This year’s theme is: “Father That They May be One Jn. 17:21” and we will focus on unity in diversity reflecting on the call of Pope Francis, “Building the unity of the Church is the task of every Christian.” The Conference will feature a variety of inspiring speakers and uplifting music. Mass is celebrated each after-noon. A well-stocked book/gift store will be available. Separate tracks for Children and Youth are also avail-able. The full-weekend Registration Fee is $50 before July 17 and $65 after July 17. Single-day registration is also available. What is a Dream and Design Day?

It is a day for people to come together to dream about the future of our parish and design action steps to reach our new goals.

The Coordinating Teams for Service and Community have been meeting since De-

cember. They looked at the goals that the Parish Council created from listening to

the parish in the survey and focus groups and then worked together on additional ways we can build Community and Service for our parish.

For Community … The Community Coordinating Team suggested:

Adding additional layers to our current hospitality events

Create four events this year to build community. ( ideas were … a Ministry Fair, a

Welcoming Ministry, a Men’s Prayer Breakfast, Expanded Home Visitors Minis-

try, expanded announcements at Masses, Hospitality Ministry at Masses, provide ongoing Info Sessions … “Getting to know Jesus”.

For Service … The Service Coordinating Team suggested:

Focus on expanding our outreach and charity (to create annual giving events,

increase support and participation with the local food pantry operated by Cath-olic Social Services, assess where additional local needs exist and coordinate ac-

tivities with the Community Coordinating Team)

Begin ministries in areas other than charity and outreach. (develop a reduce and recycle program, start small faith sharing groups, increase awareness of

time, talent and treasure, increase faith formation, public policy awareness)
