Our Year 6 leaders will attend a leadership skills day this Thursday where they will work with students from many schools across Brisbane to refine their skills and to learn a few new ones. We wish them a successful day. BUILDERS OF THE HEART We have re-introduced the monthly ‘Builders of the Heart’ award which are designed to recognise the efforts of members of the community who contribute to the heart of our school and assist us in building community. Our winners this month are: Builder of the Heart – (parent) – Mr Glenn Rowley. Glenn receives his award for his support of the Parish/School family mass each month by volunteering to ensure there is a meal for all of us after the Mass. Builder of the Heart – (Staff) – Mrs Carlie Jackson. Carlie receives her award for the way that she has embraced our school and our students. She is extremely committed to her profession and everyone in our community stands to benefit from her skill set, mind set and her presence within our school. Builder of the Heart – (Students) – Emma Alexander (Year 6). Emma receives her award for the maturity she shows and for her positive role modelling of Recruit Respectful. Congratulations to these three very worthy recipients. CLASS COVENANTS As part of our behaviour program each class devises a class covenant – an agreement created as much as possible by the students themselves which details ‘what life will be like within (their class group)’. These were read out on assembly yesterday and celebrated for being very inclusive statements about the type of classroom our students believe will help keep them safe and promote their learning. Next time you’re in your child’s classroom keep an eye out for this statement on their classroom wall.

CLASS BLOGS Have you visited your child’s class blog recently? These blogs are updated regularly by their teacher to keep you informed about class happenings including the curriculum being covered within the class. It’s designed to provide you access of a different kind so that you can kept abreast of their learning. Log on and see how they develop. MY FAVOURITE VISITORS On Tuesday we welcome my favourite visitors to the school – our Grandparents. It’s always a special day for us when our Grandparents come to visit and join with us for a few hours. I know Year 2 Maroon have lots planned for us for the morning with our liturgy commencing at 9am. I can’t wait! PARENTS-IN-PARTNERSHIP NIGHT – HOMEWORK A reminder that this Tuesday night commencing at 7pm is our Parents-In-Partnership night on the topic of our school’s new Homework statement. I look forward to gathering with you to answer your queries (thanks to those who have sent them in to us) and to share our knowledge of what we believe will greatly benefit your children and help create a calmer home life. PTO ON-LINE PTO on-line is the on-line booking form which allows you to book your interview time with your class teacher as the first part of our ‘Reporting to Parents’ framework. These interviews commence on Monday 14

th March

and allow you a formal opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss how they have settled into their class so far in 2016. The booking system open this Monday (7

th March) and the system is a ‘first in, best

served’ approach in that once you have booked your times they are yours. [‘on-line’ is the only place you can make these bookings]. It really is an opportunity I urge all families to take up. Instructions for how to access the PTO system will be emailed to all parents. ZONE 6 SWIMMING Next Friday our Zone 6 swim team will compete at the annual swimming carnival. ‘Zone 6’ is a coalition of local Catholic schools who form a competition in swimming, athletics and cross country in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. We wish our team every success. POSSUM HOUSE! Our new treehouse was going so well until one of the tree’s residents move back in after the refurbishments were done. I’m sure you’ve heard that a possum has taken up residence in our playground and has kept us out of the way for a few days. The problem is now solved and our friendly resident will now be looking for a new ‘pad’ to crash in. I’m surprised he even considered resting up amidst all that lunchtime noise. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do’. (John Wooden) Wishing you a great week as we work together for the benefit of our children. Sincerely

Next Monday 7th March we will be conducting another Outreach activity for Caritas. We will be serving a cup of plain rice for 50c a cup. Using this as a fundraiser is not the goal of this exercise but to have an understanding of what it may be like to live on rice for a day. I would like to thank Mrs Cullip, Mrs Burton and Year 6 for this great initiative, particularly the Mission Ministry Team. Solidarity day: Monday 7th March “In our world today there is enough food for everyone but not everyone has enough food”. With these words ringing in our ears, the year 6 Mission Ministry have planned a “rice day” for our school, to be in solidarity with those who do not have enough to eat.

Page 4: A Year of Mercy 1 Wk 6... · A Year of Mercy Reflection Psalm 33 ... 3 Sing to him a new song; ... Siena Bradley, Sophie Burgess MISSION MINISTRY Jordan Barnard, Aoife Hickey, Anouk

We want everyone to eat rice on Solidarity Day. Why? Because rice is the most consumed food item in the world and yet, one in eight of our world’s people is hungry! Millions of people do not have enough nutritious food to grow healthy bodies. On Solidarity-Day, we’re inviting you to substitute one of your regular meals with a simple cup of rice – sure you can eat before and after, but by just setting aside this time to eat simply and consider those who are hungry you’ll be surprised at how this meal will affect you. On Solidarity Day, we invite you to focus on what it is like to feel hungry and then direct our thoughts and prayers to justice for all who share this world. We believe that we need to help people who do not have enough nutritious food to develop healthy bodies and prevent disease and malnutrition. We also believe that we have a responsibility to give our money to support the work of CARITAS as they help the hungry around the world. Most of us can eat three or more meals a day plus snacks in between. Setting aside one meal to focus on the hungry by only eating a simple cup of rice helps us to identify with the nearly one billion people in the world who live on just one meal a day and sometimes even less than that. Please make sure you talk further about this with your students so they learn as much as possible from this experience. Thank you for your support Maureen and the Year 6s. IN THE CLASSROOM

We come to school every day,

And mostly cause we like to play, But there are things that we should do,

Like learning things, hmm! two times two.

In Year 5, to camp we’ve been Where many interesting things we’ve seen.

On high ropes we dangled, scared; That we might fall - but in our effort, teachers cared.

Then there were the [Hmmm!] rafts we made,

Some even together stayed. Aren’t night supposed to be to sleep

Well, not many into dream – went deep.

Page 6: A Year of Mercy 1 Wk 6... · A Year of Mercy Reflection Psalm 33 ... 3 Sing to him a new song; ... Siena Bradley, Sophie Burgess MISSION MINISTRY Jordan Barnard, Aoife Hickey, Anouk

Running through the mud was fun

Though that wasn’t true for everyone. But, to the challenge we all applied

The extra effort from way inside.

And, of course, there were the mighty waves, That pounded and caused enormous sprays.

But we were safe on small cute boards, With lifeguards there to keep us safe on boards.

Our teachers saw that we excelled,

In everything we tried to do well. But now it’s back into the grind,

And lots of information we must find.

And, so to studies we return, Essential if we are to learn

The most important facts of life Which help us grow and avoid strife.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE)

Japanese writing systems

(hiragana, katakana, and kanji)

Can you read this word? ' すし ' The Japanese writing system consist of three types of alphabet, hiragana, katakana and kanji (chinese characters). We use mixtures of the types of symbols in the Japanese writing.

Hiragana and katakana are both syllabic alphabets of 46 characters, each of which represents a sound. All sounds in the Japanese language can be expressed with just hiragana. Katakana scripts (the same set of sounds as with hiragana scripts) are used for foreign names and places. For beginners learning Japanese or young children, they start learning basic 46 hiragana symbols. Year 1s in Japan have to learn 46 basic hiragana and another 46 basic katakana and 80 kanji characters in their first year of schooling!

Kanji was introduced to Japan from China in the 5th century and has more than 40,000 characters, of which 2000 to 3000 are required to understand newspapers. There are no spaces in Japanese so kanji is necessary to distinguish between separate words within a sentence. Kanji is also useful for discriminating between homophones, which occur quite often given the limited number of distinct sounds in Japanese. Kanji characters have so many strokes and very hard to memorize, that is why we simplified kanji and created the hiragana and katakana alphabets. Our Year 5 have learned 5 out of basic 46 hiragana symbols so far. When they learn the hiragana alphabet,

we try to imagine pictures from each symbol. For example, this week, the letter 'す'is the sound 'su' and is

learned as " 'su' for soon the plant will grow". Let's use your imagination. The horizontal stroke is the ground.

Below the ground is the seed and root system. The seed has sprouted. It will soon be a flower. The letter'し' is learned as " 'shi' for she has long hair". This is the lovely long hair of a girl. Let's go back to the top and see. Can you read the two letter word at the top of this article. What does it mean?

I am confident that all (?) year 5s can read the word.

Happy learning Japanese!

(as seen through the eyes of our students)

The highlight of our week was:

Prep Maroon Our highlight this week was making our superhero to be a part of our class covenant. We also worked well as a team to construct the buildings on a map with the wooden blocks.

Prep Silver Our highlight of the week was reading with the Year 2's.

Year 1 Silver Our highlight of the week was the Connelly House party and learning about non-fiction and fiction books.

Year 2 Maroon The highlight of the week for 2M is the Sandgate walking tour, where we walked to

the Town Hall for a Sandgate presentation in the library and to the old Post Office

where we sketched the new building.

Year 3 Silver 3 Silver’s highlight of the week was finding Jesus in the temple and designing name

tags for our storage buckets.

Year 4 Maroon Our highlight of the week has been creating gifts for our grandparents in preparation

for Grandparents Day next week.
