Tallinn Old Town Days tells you fascinating legends

Historical procession during Tallinn Old Town Days

The Tallinn Old Town Days entitled ‘Stories and Legends’ is taking place from 12-15August this year and will focus on the stories and legends of Tallinn, of whichTallinn Old Town has plenty!Last year, Tallinn Old Town Days was cancelled due to COVID-19. This year, they are

taking place in August instead of the usual July. Similar to previous years, Tallinn Old

Town will be filled with music, street theatre, art, tours, museum tours and many more

exciting activities across four days. The organisers invite everyone to take part in this

high-quality, thrilling programme. So much so that the vast majority of events are free.

13.09.21 15:23 https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/

https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/ 4/13

We will highlight some extraordinary gems from the jam-packed programme.

Tallinn Old Town Days will get off to an outstanding start at Tallinn Town Hall Square

on 12 August at 19:00 with a Trad. Attack! concert. This world-famous Estonian

band has won listeners’ hearts by narrating stories while combining old traditions

and cultural heritage with modern rock music. One of the key events will be

TALSINGI – the joint concert in which neighbouring countries Estonia and Finland

will perform. Legendary Finnish punk musician Pelle Miljoona will step up on stage

at the concert. Vennaskond, J.M.K.E and Villu Tamme will also represent Tallinn.

Terminator and Cello Quartet C-JAM will give performances and Vaiko Eplik and

Eliit will conclude the Tallinn Old Town Days programme. Of the remarkable concert

venues, St Catherine’s Church and its passages, where you can listen to Anna

Kaneelina, Mari Kalkun and Liisi Koikson, are definitely worth mentioning.

You can listen to classical music, famous pop songs, young performers and national

legends at Tallinn Town Hall Square’s open air concerts – the heart of Tallinn Old

Town offers a unique experience to all music lovers.

The Old Town museums are open until 23:00 on Saturday, 14 August. A special

programme, excursions and concerts feature on the schedule of ‘Twilight Hour atthe Museum’. A series of excursions ‘Open Houses’ is also taking place.

This year, a real masterpiece is Cinema Sõprus’ film programme ‘Fun must be had– filmed in Tallinn’ alongside Tallinn City Museum’s excursions at film sets in

Tallinn Old Town. Why not travel back in time to an era where a film was produced

in Tallinn or enjoy gourmet dinners at Cinema Sõprus accompanied by live music?

Foodies and bookworms alike should visit Jaan Krossi Literature Cafés on 14

August – you can walk through places related to Kross in the Old Town and listen to

excerpts from Kross’ memoir, performed by well-known actors, by stopping in at the

four cafés.

Legendary Kuku Klubi will provide an art and music programme on Friday evening.

Many street artists will perform and showcase their craft on Viru Street.

Besides music and literature on the streets of the Old Town, you can explore

exhibitions on the walls and in the towers. On Tallinn Old Town Days, strollers will

be accompanied by Edgar Valter’s beloved fairy tale characters, the COVID-19-

themed memes collected by the Estonian Literary Museum, the magical world of

illustrator Maari Soekov, Juhan Kohal’s photo exhibition on life in a stone castle

entitled ‘The Hums of Walls’ and Villu Jaanisoo’s exhibitions. You can also

participate in workshops ‘Summer Memento’ in St Catherine’s Guild, with

masters of the craft waiting to teach you in various fields. Let the masters inspire

you!

Of course, the knights’ tournament will not be missing from Tallinn Old Town

Days. The Old Tallinn Cup V will take place on 14 August at 12:00 in the area next

to Niguliste Church. This medieval full-contact competition is a new and extreme

sport whereby participants fight one another in real knights’ equipment. The

competition is not only a sport, but also a beautiful and exciting spectacle.

We welcome all young people and families at the youth and children’s areaLAHELA near Šnelli Pond. You can participate in several workshops, enjoy the

stage programme and support young entrepreneurs throughout the festival. The

Student Companies Festival will take place on 14 August, which offers support and

recognition to all young business enthusiasts. Everyone can find something they

like at Lahela.

We invite everyone to contribute their thoughts at the Brainstorming Workshop

“Today’s Dream, Tomorrow’s Reality” on 13 August. The current time is ideal for

dreaming – what else could there be in Tallinn Old Town? What could fill all these

empty streets and rooms? Which activities could bring the life and buzz back to the

streets of Tallinn Old Town? What could bring people back to Tallinn Old Town?

What would our dream Tallinn Old Town look like? Come and get involved – let’s

collaborate on an Old Town that will please us all! The team of Tallinn Old Town

Days offers the opportunity to dream, with the potential to make these dreams come

true.

Moreover, a special programme at Toompea and the national cultural areawelcomes all festival visitors. Guests should not limit themselves to just one area

because the beauty of Tallinn Old Town can be found in its diversity, and Tallinn Old

Town Days is the best way to explore it!

Concert: Heino Eller. Eesti eleegia

13.09.21 15:23 https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/

https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/ 6/13

The music of Estonian-born composer Heino Eller (1887-1970) will be played by theTallinn Chamber Orchestra and conductor Tõnu Kaljuste from 12-19 August. HarpistEda Peäske will join the performers as a soloist.Concerts will be held on the following dates and at the following venues:

19:30 on 12 August at Kambja Martin church

19:30 on 13 August at Hageri Lambertus church

19:30 on 17 August at Põltsamaa Niguliste church

19:30 on 18 August at Viljandi Pauluse church

19:30 on 19 August at Räpina Miikaeli church

The concert programme features music played by Kaljuste and the Tallinn Chamber

Orchestra on Heino Eller's internationally distributed album 'Neenia' (ECM Records

2001). It is said that Eller's most beautiful works for string orchestra have been collected

on this record. These pieces will be performed again at six live performances across

Estonia.

This is beautiful, unique and memorable music with a completely Estonian sound

performed by Tõnu Kaljuste and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra at the concerts of Eesti

Eleegia. The programme includes works from several decades of Eller's creative journey:

'Elegy' (1931), 'Lyrical Suite' (1945), 'Neenia' (1928), 'Sinfonietta' (1965-1967) and'Five pieces for string orchestra' (1953), the last of which is best known under the title

'Homeland Tune'. Eller's works usually have programmatic titles. Do not be distracted by

this but come to the concert with an expectation of recognition.

https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/ 7/13

Why is it important to hear more about Heino Eller? Because in addition to his long and

fruitful career, he was a teacher of exceptional Estonian composers Arvo Pärt, Jaan

Rääts, Lepo Sumera, Eduard Tubina and others. According to Arvo Pärt, as a composer,

Eller has qualities that put him in line with the great classics of the Nordic countries. "It can

be said that Heino Eller's 'Homeland Tune' has, over time, acquired the same symbolic

value for Estonia as Sibelius' famous 'Finlandia' has for Finland," said Arvo Pärt.

Tickets for the concert 'Heino Eller. Eesti Eleegia' are on sale at Piletilevi

(https://www.piletilevi.ee/eng/search:eesti%20eleegia/) and, if available, at the venue one

hour before the concert. Discounted tickets for two to five people are also available.

The concerts are organised by the Tallinn Philharmonic, supported by the City of Tallinn,

the Ministry of Culture and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

26 August - Baltic Sea Day

'Baltic Sea' by Michael Held on Unsplash

The first Baltic Sea Day was celebrated in 2019 in Helsinki. Thus, Baltic Sea Day iscelebrated for the third time this year and now in four countries. Estonia celebratedBaltic Sea Day for the first time in 2020. The Mayor of Helsinki invited Tallinn to jointhem in celebrating Baltic Sea Day.A conference on the topics of water (from springs and rainwater to the Baltic Sea) is

organised for specialists in the field and anyone else who is interested during Baltic Sea

Day in Tallinn this year. Simultaneously, we will organise an open-air event introducing a

gem in the city centre – the scenic Aegna Island with its fascinating history. “Aegna’s

Embassy” will be opened by the Reidi Road pedestrian tracks, cycling lanes and rest area

in the Inglirand district. It introduces the historical legacy and nature of the island and tells

you what you can do on the island.

Aegna is an example to others since it recently finished an ecotourism project on how to

plan sustainable tourism and develop life on a small island. Participants will receive

versatile information on the island’s history, nature, environmental protection and

biodiversity as well as the possibilities of visiting the island and much more. There will also

be a thematic photography exhibition, sea shanty concerts, a seafood street andpresentations on the protection of the Baltic Sea.

We are also planning hikes to the city’s natural pearls; you can learn about the work of

the rubbish bin for the sea ‘Seabin’ and understand how the litter that ends up in the sea

impacts our environment.

'Sadama kohvik' from Visit Aegna

The Tallinn City Centre Government announced a photography competition thataims to capture the nature and uniqueness of Aegna Island on 16 July. You can submit your work to the competition until 12 August by sending an e-mail to

[email protected]. Every participant can send up to three photos with a total volume of 8

MB.

“We invite you to notice the nature, history and diversity of Aegna Island and want to

develop domestic tourism through this competition,” Deputy District Governor Jelena

Kalbina said. “Aegna Island is the perfect place for a short relaxing break away from the

city noise, only an hour’s ferry ride away. You do not have to travel far away for the ideal

vacation. There are so many incredible places to explore in Estonia – we are surrounded

by beautiful nature and have many options for adventure and relaxation. Aegna is one of

those places that everyone should visit.”

Everyone can participate in the competition – you do not have to have a professional

camera to participate. Participants of the competition give permission to the organiser to

use the photo within the competition – in the publications and on the website of the district,

in print and on social media – and agree to have their photo published for free. The author

will be mentioned when using the photo.

You can find the best works on Reidi Road at the Baltic Sea Day event dedicated to

The Night of Ancient Bonfires

13.09.21 15:23 https://kesklinn.sendsmaily.net/template/preview/id/12/

The Night of Ancient Bonfires in Inglirand

Concerts and bonfires will be held to celebrate the Night of Ancient Bonfires atInglirand (near Russalka) on 28 August in Tallinn. The free public event will begin with

the lighting of the bonfires during sunset at 20:00, which will be followed by Jarek Kasar’sconcert. One bonfire will also be lit on a raft that has been carried out to sea in addition to

those on the seashore.

The fires lit at the Night of Ancient Bonfires are a reminder of the historical seaside

beacon fires. The modern lighting of fires together at the end of August has become a

national tradition in just a few decades.

The seaside beacon fires were called iilastuli (a word with Medieval origins meaning a

beacon fire), especially on Estonian islands. The beacon fires were lit out of practical need

during the Viking Age. The fire was lit so that sailors who were late at sea could find their

way back home. The fire keeper received one hundred Baltic herring from every boat that

made it to shore thanks to the fire. This order and duty was followed for hundreds of years

because it was crucial for the survival of the sailors and the preservation of the seaside

villages.

The contemporary tradition of lighting a beacon fire began in Hiiumaa and other Estonian

islands more than 20 years ago; people take part in it every year, mainly to spread positive

messages. The chain of fires around the Estonian coastline and islands has extended

year after year. The seaside event also offers an emotional experience and a sense of

unity to those who gather for the event that evening.
