EDITOR’S LETTER

One of the things I

love about cruise

holidays is that

they’re a hassle-free

way to discover

some of the world’s

most intriguing

destinations. In this issue we’re visiting

Vietnam (page 46) and Burma (page 87)

– both captivating and remarkably easy

to explore by ship.

If you’ve never been on a cruise

before, deciding where to go, and with

which cruise line, can be a bit

overwhelming – s o we’ve asked the

experts for their top tips (page 21).

Also in this issue you’ll fi nd your

guide to the planet’s greatest rivers, from

the Amazon to the Volga (page 63), plus

reviews of an Egyptian cruise (page 54)

and a French mini-break (page 50).

Elsewhere we have interviews with

celebrity cruisers Russell Watson (page

29) and Marco Pierre White (page 98),

plus cruise style tips from Emma Forbes

and Gemma Sheppard (page 15).

And if you’re heading to the Cruise

Show later this month you can fi nd us on

stand A22 – turn to page 11 to fi nd out

how you can get a special rate on tickets.

Hope to see you there.Hope to see you there.

CRUISE FASHION

Going on a cruise and not sure what to pack? We asked style gurus

Emma Forbes and Gemma Sheppard to

give us their top tips for day to evening glamour

“What to wear is often a dilemma for the best of

us – but on a cruise where there can be no net-a-porter

delivery mid-ocean and shops may not have what

you need (or like), youneed to think and plan ahead. And unless you’re booking a separate cabin

for your clothes (somepassengers actually do this),chances are space in your

stateroom will be limited. Layyour outfi ts out before you goto check you have everything

you need.”

START WITH THE BASICSWhen you can’t take your entire wardrobe it’s best to take multi-tasking outfi ts – don’t take that mad pink statement dress that can be worn once, because on a cruise you’ll be seeing the same crowd. Try to take items of clothing that can be worn in three different ways – trousers, skirts, jackets and then use accessories to add splashes of colour, the glitz and the glam.

Think 1920s glamour and go for some great palazzo pants in cream and a pair in black. You can dress them up

for the evening, or go more casual during the day – maybe with a stripy t-shirt for that classic nautical look. Put in a few tops

of different colours – black, white, and a couple of brights.

A classic jacket, such as a blazer, is an essential – so versatile in the

ways in which it can be worn. And fi nally we are both

huge fans of a hat – one because we both colour our

hair (wind and sun can ruin that) and also on a cruise it helps to keep hair under control.

COMFORTThe key to dressing for the cold is lots of thin layers – it’s easy to strip off if you are warmer but also to keep adding.

For trips to the Arctic there is no way round it – you need a huge cosy coat. Try Blacks (blacks.co.uk)

ACCESSORISEAccessories are a great way to

turn a very simple black dress into something with the ‘wow’ factor. Wraps, scarves, accessories, pashminas – again all so brilliant to take along to add layers, glamour and fi nishing touches.

STEPPING OUT Whatever type of holiday the biggest mistake to make is to not take a comfy pair of fl ats – a pair of fl at ballet style pumps or a sandal that has some sort of detail on it so it can be worn again day or night.

APRIL/MAY 2013 |

Don’t forget shades to keep you

looking cool and sophisticated.

top tip

What to wear on a cruise

FOR MENAgain layers are equally practical and effi cient – fi ne cashmeres and long sleeve shirts as these can also be rolled up to give a great casual look. If there’s going to be a formal evening while you’re on your cruise, men have it easier – the evening suit or tux can have many lives with a different coloured shirt, tie or bow tie. Try Designers at Debenhams, John Lewis, Burberry, Jaeger, Ralph Lauren and Marks and Spencer. That way you can get it done under one roof if your shopping time is limited (always remember to make a concise list before going out).

Style black bookOur top favourite places for holiday dressing are:● Theory – for classic pieces, such as jackets, trousers, chic shirts (available in places like Selfridges) ● Zara (zara.com) – for the best in basic t-shirts of all colours● Melissa Odabash (odabash.com) – a girl only ever needs one uber-fl attering swimsuit and kaftan● Ted Baker (tedbaker.com) – fabulous silk scarves ● The Travel Wrap company (thetravelwrapcompany.com) – amazing cashmere wraps – oversized, and perfect for travelling and keeping cosy● And a great website for a bit of everything for everyone of all ages is asos.com You can read more style tips from Emma and Gemma at emmaforbes.com/saluting-style

health & Wellbeing

Well

Holidays are good foryou – officialif you need another reason to book that cruise, here’s the perfect excuse – going on holiday gives you such a health boost, it can even help you to live longer. a new study by nuffield Health and tour operator Kuoni looked into whether the feel-good factor of travel was all in our heads and discovered that a fortnight away helped cut blood pressure and stress, improved sleep and boosted energy levels. the holidaymakers even trimmed some weight off their middles, compared to the group which stayed at home and worked. and best of all, the benefits continue for weeks or even months afterwards.

Every issue we bring you the latest health and wellbeing news

Last-minute adviceSnapped up an exotic last-minute bargain? Before you start packing,

don’t forget to check whether you need any vaccinations or malaria tablets. NHS website FitForTravel (fitfortravel.nhs.uk) has advise tailored to your destination while Boots Web MD(webmd.boots.com) includes a special travel tips section.

eSalty sea therapysitting in a salt cave might not seem like the most obvious way to pamper yourself. But when salt therapy is thought to strengthen your immune system, improve skin and respiratory conditions like asthma, and even tackle insomnia, more people are heading into the healing grottoes to relax, breathe the saline air and reap the benefits. Norwegian Breakaway, launching in april, has the first salt room at sea as part of its 23,000sq-ft spa, thermal suite and fitness centre, along with over 50 more traditional treatments, from hot stone massages to oxygen facials and acupuncture.

Precious pamperingWhen msc cruises’ latest flagship MSC Preziosa launches on 23 march, the signature treatments in the aurea spa will be inspired by precious minerals. choose from an anti-ageing facial including haematite cream to plump skin and stimulate collagen production, or the purifying anti-stress treatment based on rare rose-red rodochrosite crystal, as well as a body treatment using protective malachite cream that’s perfect after too much sun.

Raw food is getting the gourmet treatment from SeaDream Yacht Club. Popular in Hollywood, the diet promises to boost energy levels as well as leaving you looking fantastic, and is based on organic and vegan ingredients packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all heated to a maximum of 48˚C to preserve the micronutrients. And guests on the line’s two luxury megayachts are the first to have this rawor ‘living’ food optionalongside the regularmenu. It’s far fromendless lettuce leaveseither – SeaDream’spastry chef has createddesserts includingcashew lemoncheesecake, fresh juices and Asian-style salads.

“A ll cruise ships are different, so it’s a case of choosing the ship that would appeal to you most,” says

andy Harmer, director of the association of cruise experts. “it could be a larger ship with plenty of facilities or a small intimate one that can access ports other ships can’t. there are river and expedition ships that explore off-the-beaten-track destinations around the world. you need to decide the style of holiday you are looking for, then think about where in the world you would like to visit.”

Cruises from a home port – particularly if you live nearby – can be more relaxing and cheaper than those that involve flying.

if you’re not sure whether cruising is for you, “try a short cruise,” suggests p&o managing director carol marlow. there are more short breaks than ever before, she adds, with p&o including entertainment from top names including russell Watson and Britain’s Got Talent duo Jonathan and charlotte.

Decide what is most important to you – the destinations or the ship – and work from there. Some cruises have a stop every day (so you’re on board for late afternoon and evening) while others can be at sea for days at a time.

Watch out for all-inclusive cruises, says silver travel advisor – they can be great value for those who like a drink, but if you’re a person of more modest tastes you’ll be subsidising other passengers.

River cruises offer the adventure of a cruise combined with that of an escorted tour. Excursions and guided walks are includedin the price – which is very good value if you like seeing adestination to the full. Many river cruises also offer wine with dinner, leaving little else to pay for.

NEW TO CRUISE

Plan your budget – make a list of extras (tips, excursions, any travel costs) so that you know what the end price will

be, and how much you’ll be happy to spend when you’re away.

There are excursions available in every port, many of which can give you a good overview of a destination. Pre-booking o en gives you better prices, and guarantees you get the ones you want.

But don’t make the mistake of feeling you need an excursion to help you see a place every time you get off the ship. Cruise lines make lots of money from them and want you to think they’re indispensable – but they can involve long spells on a coach when you’d have a nicer time just wandering around the port or city on your doorstep.

Make sure you have valid insurance – even modest Mediterranean cruises try to fi nd new destinations, o en outside the safety of EU medical cover.

Enjoy the ship at its best by staying on board during a full day in port – almost everyone else will have gone ashore and you’ll have the place to yourself. You’ll also often fi nd special o ers for spa treatments when the ship’s deserted.

Pack swimming gear in your hand luggage so you can head straight for the pool when you get on board – your bags can take a while to be delivered on a 4,000-passenger ship

HOW TO GET A GREAT DEAL ON YOUR CRUISE

● “Be fl exible,” says Raphael Giacardi, cruise deal expert at Travelzoo. “If you’re looking at booking your fi rst cruise, you probably won’t want to pay over the odds. Prices change radically depending on the sailing date – it might be that you can score a bargain by taking the same cruise a few weeks earlier or later. Also, check how much similar cruise lines are charging for equivalent or comparable itineraries.”

● When booking look closely to see whether tipping is included – some cruise lines add a sum per person per day to your bill, which can add several hundred pounds to the cost per couple.

● However, if you like the good life, ultra-luxury cruising can be a great deal. Philip Ordever, VP of international sales at Crystal Cruises, says a cruise that includes champagne and other top-shelf drinks, as well as wine pairings with dinner, can be had for £130 a day.

● Specialist cruise travel agents have access to all the cruise lines’ o ers and can often tempt you with a better deal by foregoing part of their commission.

● Prices change dramatically in the run-up to a cruise, and are at their highest a few months before departure. If you’re happy with pot luck you can fi nd bargain late bookings (especially if you hold your nerve until the last week) but these tend to be on the big ships; small vessels tend to sell out.

● The best deal (at least one that gives you a good price allied with choice) comes as soon as the cruise has gone on sale, generally a year or so in advance. It might also come with money credited to your account to spend on board (and if you’re not on an all-inclusive cruise, do remember that drinks can add to your fi nal bill). Online booking often brings a discount, maybe fi ve per cent.

Go to the port lectures – they might sound dull but they’re a great help if you’re planning to go it alone when

you arrive. often they’re even better – on a recent celebrity cruise in the adriatic the speaker was a veteran us professor whose wise guy take on the roman empire would have made him a great tV series host.

Most dining these days is open-seating – for the chance to meet new people opt to share a larger table.

Get a bonus at the bar by buying the drinks card available from some cruise lines. “you can normally choose from bottled water cards, soft drink cards and alcohol cards, or a combination,” says lynn narraway, uK managing director of Holland america line. “For example, we sell a $90 card that gets you $100 of drinks.” it’s also worth pre-ordering a drinks package if your cruise line offers one of these.

There’s always a daily newsletter, delivered the evening before, which tells you what’s going on the next day (and the weather), so you can plan. Use it to help structure an otherwise formless day at sea with themed restaurant offerings, exercise classes, activities, talks, demonstrations and shows.

>

“control that thirst,” says Douglas ward, one of the world’s leading cruise experts, author of thebook Cruising & Cruise Ships. “you are greeted by a smiling waiter offering you a colourful, cool drink but put your fingers on the glass and he’ll ask for your cruise card.” and you’ll have paid up to £5 for what could be a weak, ice-filled drink. Bottled water is usually charged for, too – you can drink by the glass for free from the coffee station instead.

“Make sure you know where to find the dining room, the gangway and the show lounge, and everything else will fall into place,” says Mike Hall, head of marketing at cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

Dining room Show lounge

A cruise can’t make you fat – it’s eating the constant supply of free food that does that. Ships have gyms, walking and jogging circuits and plenty of stairs so there’s no excuse for not getting active.

It’s easy to be over-awed by a huge, modern cruise ship but just remember that it’s full of free things to do – so relax and enjoy yourself. Above all, think of your cruise ship as a floating hotel, but one that takes youto a host of fabulous destinations - and if you don’t get to do everything, there’s always next time.

“The Yacht Clubrooms are great;everything workedperfectly, and ofcourse I lovedhaving a butler”

As a total newcomer to cruise holidays, a long weekend cruise sounded like a risk-free trial, and the prospect of shopping in rome, followed

by exploring Genoa and portofino, plus tapas and the beach in Barcelona, was very exciting.

First impressionsWe flew to rome early on a Friday, and after spending our day shopping and having a wonderful lunch at a taverna, transferred to the magnificent Splendida. i tried really hard to take a photo of the ship, but it was impossible – it was just too big.

On board, we were lucky enough to be staying in the yacht Club and were met by our personal butler, who quickly helped us check in and ensured our luggage magically appeared in our stateroom.

The yacht Club has 71 suites and its own lounge, bar, pool deck and spa. like a small ship inside a ship – or a boutique hotel inside a big resort. all

the staff learnt our names pretty quickly, which was a really nice touch. after we’d settled into our stateroom, which was nice and modern, we went for drinks at the Top Sail pool bar, which felt wonderfully exclusive.

all guests in this area of the ship have meals in the fine dining restaurant included, as well as drinks (there is a supplement for premium spirits such as Tanqueray Ten and fine wines), but i knew it would be OK when i realised prosecco was on tap. i couldn’t get over the wonderful views – and the excitement of being in the middle of the ocean. it was simply stunning.

The yacht Club rooms are great; everything worked perfectly, and of course i loved having a butler. i was an easy passenger really as i didn’t ask for much but i can see the appeal of having your ironing done, which i would totally use, if necessary.

relaxing on boardi adored the yacht Club pool deck, a huge area with a bar, lounging chairs, a pool, two Jacuzzis and a viewing deck. it was super spacious and not crowded at all. There are more sun loungers than guests... so even at full capacity, it would never look too busy.

The aurea spa was wonderful – it was one of the best experiences ever, and i have had a few massages and facials around the world. The treatment rooms are state of the art, and the view... wow, that will be difficult to replicate anywhere else. The yacht Club lounge is fabulous – just like any luxury hotel lounge – with simple meals and drinks available throughout the day.

incredible sightseeingOur visit to beautiful portofino was magical, and we had plenty of time to explore Genoa – the home of focaccia, pesto and Christopher Columbus. it made me want to return again. in Barcelona we relaxed on the beach before catching our flight home, which was just what we wanted.

We had an amazing weekend on our first cruise – not a lot of sleep, but we returned to the UK feeling happy and chilled. Next time i’d love to go with a big group of friends.

I’m very lucky that I get to travel the world and sing. I’ve performed at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, toured Japan and had dinner with the Emperor at the Imperial Palace, and given a show for the Duke of Edinburgh in the garden at Buckingham Palace. Japan has to be one of my favourites because I adore the culture. I also love Rome, and Vienna is amazing. I am singing there soon in the Concert House, which is just an incredible experience.

It’s a fi ne feeling being on the ocean on a great big liner. The appeal is being out in the middle of nowhere and as far away from humanity as you can possibly get. Yet you still have the luxuries on board. I don’t ever get seasick either, even if it’s rough.

I have many stories of my younger days on the cruise ships when I played a much more minor role in the entertainment. I did quite a few trips around the Mediterranean and Caribbean with a dear chap called Crisco. He was a comedy magician whose tricks always went wrong.

Once when our ship called at Naples, we wanted to look round the old Roman ruins of Pompeii. We weren’t exactly fl ush with cash, so we snuck in by jumping over a fence into an area of historical signifi cance which had been cordoned off. Unfortunately we couldn’t get back out because the fence was too high, and we were trapped behind metal gates in a deserted no go area, shouting for help until someone walked past to help us. When we fi nally got out, I couldn’t resist singing in one of the amphitheatres until a collection of people started clapping.

One of the Caribbean islands I got to know quite well was Barbados. I got to make friends with the locals.

One of them was Vernie, who took me round to all the local reggae clubs in the evenings. It was fantastic. It meant that I got to see a side of Barbados which I would never have seen staying in a posh hotel or a resort.

What I’ve never done is taken my success for granted. That’s why I think that 13 years down the road as a recording artist I’m lucky I am still here. It’s not just about being a singer, you also have to be a business person as well. And that’s what a lot of people aren’t taught when they are coming off The X Factor and talent shows. That’s why a lot of them slip through the net. Very few, like Will Young, have the business acumen as well as a great talent.

I still think back to the days when I was singing Elvis in working men’s clubs in the North West. I would drive round in a battered old Peugeot which I could barely afford to run, lugging my two speakers up and down fl ights of stairs. You’d walk in and people would stare are you, like who are you? They’d ask me what I was singing, and I’d say, Lionel Ritchie, and they’d say, we don’t like him. They were very tough areas and could be scary. But they gave me a good grounding and made me who I am today.

I’ve been with my girlfriend Louise for three years. If you were to ask her if there are any plans for us to marry, she would say yes. If you asked me, I’d remain ambiguous. I’m a typical man. Yes I think I see myself being married again. But there are always reasons or excuses. At the moment we enjoy each other’s company, and everything is good. We are happy and like a family unit now when my daughters (Rebecca, 17 and Hanna, 11) are with us. I don’t see much reason to change that at the moment.

In an ideal world, if I could get my kids over to Sydney in Australia, I’d live there. It’s so cosmopolitan, not overcrowded, the beaches are wonderful and the summers are hot. The winters are cold so you still get the seasons which is something I love.

Louise will be coming with me on the P&O cruise, and if I have time off we will have a romantic meal together. But if it’s a working day, then it’s out of the question. I have a routine. I get up as late as possible to give my body plenty of rest. Just prior to lunch I start going through some mid range scales, and later in the afternoon I start reaching for some of the high notes, and then we are ready for the stage.

Go online: Find out how Russell got on with our quickfi re quiz at cruise-international.com

Russell Watson will be on board Aurora for a three-night cruise departing on 18 May (prices start from £299pp), and on board Azura for a four-night cruise departing on 5 July (from £399 per person).

Visit pocruises.com for more info.

I love the social aspect of cruising. The interaction with the passengers is the reason I do this. On the last cruise, the fans really enjoyed the fact that I was in their proximity, wandering around the ship. There are some artists I know who are not keen being close to their fan base, but I love speaking to people and passing the time of day. After a concert, I like going back to the suite, and we will invite my assistant and whoever has done the sound and have a few glasses of wine and a chat about the gig and a good natter, which I enjoy.

The fans have been incredibly caring and supportive during the times I’ve been ill (Russell has had two brain tumours). I am a very lucky man. It’s coming up to six years now since my recovery and I’ve made it through. Until the point where I got ill, I didn’t give my mortality a second thought. But particularly with the second tumour, I was very close to stepping over onto the other side. And when you’ve gone through an experience like that, not once but twice, it certainly alters your perspective on life.

I was on stage at the Royal Albert Hall recently and Russell Grant was the compere. At the end of one of my shows he came over and said: “Oh my God darling, I really didn’t know you’d had all these problems. You’re unbelievable. I’ve only just found out today sweetheart.” He was very sweet. A lot of people don’t necessarily know. It really doesn’t make any difference to me. It’s not an area of my life that I want sympathy for.

I am much more focused and more patient now that I ever was. You could say I am more like a wise old owl than a waggy puppy dog. I do feel as though I have been blessed with something very special. And that’s a true appreciation of life and the people who are around me. Every day is a gift.

* When the lamb is added, it will shed the excess of its moisture

and will cook in its own stock. If there isn’t much liquid in the

I’m being ferried along a busy main road on a rickety metal rickshaw, driven by a toothless man who is coughing so much I’m concerned

he’ll collapse before we reach our destination. All around us are motorbikes and mopeds, piled high with everything from whole families to wedding gazebos, baskets of live chickens and goldfi sh. One woman is even balancing a slice of cake on a plate.

It’s noisy, dirty, smelly, and chaotic. It’s also captivating. Welcome to Vietnam.

Our journey by sea to Ho Chi Minh City began in Singapore, where the contrast with the Vietnamese city couldn’t be greater. Singapore is almost clinically clean and by day seems uninspiring, a mishmash of skyscrapers and traditional architecture.

The most impressive building is also one of the oldest – Raffl es Hotel, which is cool and elegant

A cruise from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City reveals two extraordinarily diverse cultures, as Liz Jarvis discovered

and defi nitely worth visiting, even if you can’t afford to stay there.

At night though the city is transformed, the skyline glittering, the river illuminated with the rainbow of colours from the nightly laser show emitted by the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Families promenade and the waterfront restaurants are busy.

After a delicious dinner of fresh crab and the obligatory Singapore Sling we headed to the rooftop bar of The Fullerton Bay Hotel, with its stunning views of the city, and it’s up there that I start to appreciate the appeal of Singapore: glamour.

The following day we boarded our ship, Silver Shadow, at the shiny new and very empty Marina Bay Cruise Terminal, to be greeted by Silversea staff bearing trays of champagne, and shown to our Veranda Ocean View stateroom, which was comfortable and spacious.

That night we dined in Le Champagne ($30 cover charge), and I tried the much-heralded Gold Leaf Risotto. The gold leaf seems to dissolve in your mouth, and my lobster main course was also excellent, as was the warm white chocolate souffl é.

There are several bars on Silver Shadow and a small casino. The best place to be though is the Panorama Lounge, where you can step out on to the deck and breathe in the ocean air.

On our second day the sun was shining and the pool deck uncrowded, with a constant supply of towels, ice-cold washcloths and drinks.

This is proper pampering, and my Elemis facial later that day was very good too. We also became attached to our butler.

Our favourite meal by far was the Hot Rock dining experience, where you choose the meat you want (in my case steak and prawns – not as weird

as it sounds) and then it’s served on your own little barbecue for you to cook the way you like it.

And I decide that this is the real bonus of cruising with Silversea. Extraordinarily good food, and unobtrusive service. What our ship may have lacked in state-of-the-art facilities was more than made up for by the luxurious experience, making our cruise to Vietnam all the more pleasurable. The atmosphere is informal and unpretentious, and there are

excellent lectures too, including one given by a military expert, and another telling us about the

The other big advantage is the size of the ship, meaning it can pull right into Saigon harbour, avoiding the need for lengthy transfers. Along the way we pass rural scenery and traditional fi shing boats.

In Ho Chi Minh City the riverbanks are lined with tall skinny traditional-style houses and though the name may have changed from Saigon there’s evidence of the city’s French past everywhere, including wide boulevards and colonial villas. There are also lots of street vendors – mostly women, wearing traditional conical hats and selling hot food, fruit, handmade crafts and lottery tickets.

‘We don’t talk about the War,’ our tour guide tells his busload of passengers – mostly Americans. He’s joking, of course, because there are reminders everywhere you go, including the former Presidential Palace, now the Reunifi cation Palace, where tanks crashed through the gates in 1975; the site of the former US embassy, where helicopters carried out the last evacuation; and the Rex Hotel, the well-known hangout for military offi cials and war correspondents.

If you’re interested in exploring the city’s military history further, it’s well worth taking the excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels, which were used by the Viet Cong as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches, and ultimately helped them win the war. Be warned though that most of these underground tunnels are only two feet wide and fi ve feet high, so not for the claustrophobic. Along the way you’ll pass paddy fi elds and villages, as though time has stood still.

And if you want to see more of Vietnam then the Mekong Delta excursion will take you on a tour of local villages. You’ll visit the Cai Be Floating Market and be left with vivid impressions of rural life along the canals.

In Ho Chi Minh City we spot an extraordinary number of brides – seven in total – having their photos taken outside the Notre-Dame Basilica. Each one has her own make-up artist and hairdresser in tow, as well as her groom. Our guide explains that their traditional white gowns are hired specially for the photographs, and the couples won’t actually get married for another two weeks.

Other highlights include Gustave Eiffel’s impressive General Post Offi ce, with its stunning mosaic-tiled fl oor and frescoes on the walls; China Town, where we visit the beautiful incense-scented Thien Hau Temple; and the An Dong and Binh Tay indoor markets, mazes of stalls with endless hats and pairs of shoes you could easily get lost in.

As we make our way to the airport, the sun is starting to set, but there are still countless motorbikes and scooters on the streets, whirring past us in a blur of colour. Ho Chi Minh City has a unique charm, and our brief taste of Vietnam has left all of our party wanting to explore more.

Pont Notre Dame across the Seine

It was only as i slipped away from dinner for a reasonably early night and heard the sound of people singing along to abba that the penny finally

dropped: mini-cruises are really party cruises, and most passengers on board just want good food, good company and a good laugh.

Fred. olsen cruise lines has a fabulous reputation for delivering British-style traditional cruises for its loyal passengers, but when i joined its elegant ship Braemar for a three-night flit across the english channel, every night was a chance to let your hair down if you wanted.

there was dancing in the coral lounge until the early hours and the West end-style shows featured some of the best singers i have heard at sea.

the atmosphere was always friendly and if you didn’t meet somebody new for a chat during freestyle dining at breakfast you would definitely have made a new friend by lunch, while the scottish-themed morning light pub and sophisticated observation lounge were always lively pre-dinner – perhaps because of the reasonable bar prices.

Food was always either good or excellent, ranging from superb offerings such as smoked salmon and asparagus starters, tasty chicken broth and roast duck to the rather ordinary grilled fish that is available every night (although many people prefer their food plain).

the circular thistle restaurant, with its cream and gold décor, is a truly gracious room, and has the same menu as the more intimate Grampian restaurant. i wasn’t so keen on the self-serve palms café, which had

a limited choice and was a bit gloomy after dark – although it probably comes into its own in summer with its additional seating on deck.

meanwhile my superior twin outside cabin was very roomy, with a slightly art Deco feel, plenty of storage and very welcome tea-making facilities. it was only let down by the tiny shower room with its plastic curtain and dreary décor. But it was fine for a three-day trip,

which is also the perfect amount of time to get a taste of what cruises can offer.

mini-cruises also give you the chance to visit ports you might have overlooked before – in my case cherbourg and le Havre – and because they’re so close you’re virtually guaranteed a full day ashore.

We arrived at cherbourg at 8.45am and although there were excursions to paris (£70) and through rolling normandy countryside to a farm selling calvados, cider and cheese (£50) i decided i could buy all those more cheaply in cherbourg and still have change for a drink back on board.

a free shuttle coach dropped us outside the tourist information office where i was given a map and directed to the busy market in place centrale. there were piles of colourful vegetables that looked like they’d been dug up fresh that morning, and several p

Fred. Olsen Cruise Line (01473 742424/ fredolsencruises.com) offers a four-night Highlights of the Lowlands cruise on board Braemar departing on 23 August from £449pp (two sharing). The return trip from Dover calls at Le Havre, Ostende and Amsterdam.

imagining myself back in the glamour days of travel.the Braemar’s largely cream and gold or blue décor,

with lots of light from picture windows, gives it a rather regal – certainly very individual – appearance.

With a maximum of 929 passengers on board the ship is perfect for people who want to be spoilt for a week or two but prefer a simple life. so while there are no wow-factor facilities there is a choice of dining, daytime and evening entertainment and enough sports facilities to keep you occupied but still leave time for sitting around the pool.

its new Fitness centre on Deck 7 has sea views and plenty of cross-trainers, running and cycling machines for the size of the ship. there are two reasonably sized pools and two whirlpools, plus a small spa where a pedicure costs £25 and salon where you can get a wash, cut and blowdry for just £35.

the only disadvantage of a mini-cruise is that there’s not enough time to do everything: such as go to the cinema, play bingo or join the afternoon quiz… which is why i’ll be signing up for a longer Fred. olsen experience just as soon as i can.

seafood stalls. a small crowd gathered at one where a huge crab was mounting a desperate escape mission

the surrounding shops sold local calvados and cider, and there were high-end chocolatiers loaded with treats and grocers selling foie gras.

everything was beautifully packaged but rather euro-expensive, so after a good mooch around i walked to the new shopping centre near the harbour where the huge carrefour sold very drinkable cabernet sauvignon for just €2.25 (£1.85) and pretty bottles of armagnac for €16 (£13.25).

it was only a 15-minute walk back to the ship, which was docked right next to la cité De mer, an excellent attraction that explores our fascination with the deep sea. this includes an audio-guided walk through a real nuclear submarine (unarmed but still pretty scary), a state-of-the-art aquarium full of colourful fish and sea creatures plus numerous deep-sea artefacts and film footage.

la cité De mer is in part of cherbourg’s huge 1930s art Deco cruise terminal, once filled with the sound of transatlantic passengers such as richard Burton and elizabeth taylor on their way to new york.

increasingly it’s full of the sound of cruise passengers, and thanks to Braemar’s classic lines and sumptuous public rooms i could be forgiven for

FAMILY CRUISE

Want to impress your teenagers? Take them on a Red Sea cruise to the land of the pharaohs to soak up some history, says Linda Aitchison

Egyptian

As my daughters gaze wide-eyed at the vibrant hieroglyphics depicting complex scenes of power and opulence, I’ve never seen them

so engrossed. Our guide to the Valley of the Kings, Hassan, is unravelling enigmas inspired by the pharaohs and we are all transfi xed.

“This is awesome, Mum,” says Melissa. “Amazing,” Emily echoes. Armed with a key to deciphering the ancient symbols, they eagerly spot the letters in a labyrinth of passageways leading to the royal tombs.

Our journey so far has brought us through much of Egypt, listening to exciting tales of wealth, death and destiny – as unforgettable for me as it is awe-inspiring for my twin 14-year-olds. The contrast with everything we have experienced earlier in the day is striking. We’ve travelled through chaos, noise and vast spaces broken only by the sight of men and horses working the land, much as they have for hundreds of years.

At the Valley of the Kings, history springs to life in an epic tableau. The major burial site with its

FAMILY CRUISE

abundance of Egyptian mythology has been a focus of discovery since the late 1700s. The work here of British Egyptologist Howard Carter, known for discovering the tomb of 14th-century BC pharaoh Tutankhamun, has captured the world’s imagination.

The valley is known to contain some 63 tombs and chambers, but it’s that of the Boy King, found by Carter’s team in 1922, which has the biggest pull. Earlier in the week at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo we marvelled at the glittering spoils that were pulled out of the young royal’s fi nal resting place. This treasure trove of gold and ebony is the most complete chamber ever uncovered and is truely amazing.

Today, stripped of its fi nery, the tomb itself appears unremarkable but the treasures on display in the capital, including the incredible golden mask, preserve its iconic status... as does a famous curse.

Gripping stories of the curse of the pharaohs ripple through the crowd and there’s a collective refl ective sigh as Hassan explains how some connected with the discovery of Tutankhamen’s remains allegedly met an untimely and mysterious end. Two workers who forced open the door to the tomb were said to have dropped dead on the spot, while Lord Carnarvon, who funded the trip was bitten by a mosquito and died fi ve months later. Carter himself fell victim to Lymphoma.

Our visit to the Valley of the Kings came three days after we journeyed to the Pyramids, on a packed and stunning itinerary with the Thomson Celebration Red Sea Magic cruise. The ship docked at Sharm El Sheikh, before heading to Aqaba in Jordan, Port Sokhna as a gateway to Cairo, then Safaga for Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, and back to Sharm El Sheikh.

We sailed during a very busy week, but the service was always friendly, the atmosphere surprisingly informal – a refreshing and relaxed backdrop for the grandeur we were discovering on our daily travels.

Some nights we dined in the self-service buffet restaurant which has different themed nights, including tastes of Asia and Mexico, and is open 24-hours a day.

While the restaurant was often packed, waiting was

kept to a minimum. Each afternoon there was also a chance to sample afternoon tea with dainty sandwiches and cakes, although we were too busy sightseeing to try it. We also enjoyed the waiter-service Meridian restaurant where six-course meals were served – including impressive dishes like lamb wellington or beef with pâté, beautifully cooked and presented, giving us a of a taste of a more formal cruise setting, chatting to fellow

diners.Waiters aboard

the Celebration were a joy to be around, attentive and friendly without being pushy (service charges and tips are included in the price of the holiday). My girls sipped non-alcoholic cocktails

every night and it felt like a real grown-up moment. During a day at sea, staff toured the decks to wait on guests as they lazed in the sun.

The on-board entertainment was amazing. A show based on the sights and sounds of Africa sparked a standing ovation, and I loved the nightly quizzes and games from the entertainments team.

The expert destination services staff were fi rm in their guidance about the pitfalls of visiting the most popular tourist attractions – don’t be tempted to ride a camel at the pyramids, they advised, you’ll end up paying to get on and then off again as well, and don’t engage in conversation with the souvenir sellers waiting at the steps of the bus.

But my daughters gained a lot of attention from over-zealous hawkers. They attached themselves to us, shouting “Shakira, Shakira,” offering me an ambitious fi ve million camels for Melissa and assuring me I’m lucky to have Spice Girls as daughters.

Despite the wisdom of the Celebration staff, we were a little overwhelmed at first by being targeted so forcefully but we laughed it off.

another surprise, this time at Giza, near cairo, was the chance to go inside a pyramid. “Don’t do it if you have a bad back or if you suffer at all with agoraphobia,” the thomson team advised us. in we trekked, bent double and perhaps a little close for comfort to the people in front. reaching the end of a ten-minute descent in a narrow, low-ceilinged corridor, stepping cautiously, a cheer went up as we reached the site of the most famous pyramids, one of the seven ancient Wonders of the World.

supposedly built on the instruction of the egyptian sun God, ra, the pyramids are said to be shaped to represent the rays of the sun. catching our breath as we viewed a tomb inside, dating back thousands of years, we came face to face with a more modern egyptian phenomenon. a man, wanting to know if we wanted a photo, even though cameras are banned.

a more substantial brush with egyptian entrepreneurship came at an alabaster factory near luxor. We listened, watched and laughed as the owner sold his wares, telling us with a well practiced accent that he was from leeds. the good-natured banter worked. our fellow travellers left clutching miniature sphinxes and cats, although their provenance was debatable. While the stone carvers kept us entertained outside, there could be little doubt the goods on show inside were mass-produced.

our trip was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, smells and textures, and we loved every minute. in cairo, en route for the egyptian museum, we were open mouthed at the traffic – there appeared to be eight lanes, with no order whatsoever. We felt as though we were taking our life in our hands. “the first rule of driving in egypt is that there are no rules,” joked our guide Dina.

But there was also plenty of time for relaxation. at the Dead sea, on a visit from aqaba, we slathered ourselves in unctuous mud before bobbing around in salty waters where it’s famously impossible to sink. another life-affirming moment.

as we prepared to head home, one last excursion took us on a glass-bottomed boat tour off sharm’s balmy shore. We saw stingrays and dozens of species of fish. the coral glowed and the blue-green hues of the red sea glistened in the sun. a truly unforgettable cruise.

the mighty mekong (translated from the thai, mae nam Khong, or ‘the mother of Water’) rises together with the yangtze and yellow rivers from the tibetan plateau and then runs through china’s yunnan province and onwards, entering Burma, laos, thailand, cambodia and vietnam until it reaches the south china sea.

Broadly, navigation of the river is divided between the upper and lower mekong, broken by the Khone Falls in southern laos. the mountainous upper stretches are the background for scenic cruises between Houaysay in northern laos and the ancient royal capital of luang prabang. in the south of the country, you can explore the natural beauty of champasak province and the region of the so-called 4,000 islands and the largest waterfalls in asia.

most mekong cruise itineraries though tend to go from siem reap in cambodia to Ho chi minh city (formerly saigon) in vietnam, or vice versa. this offers the chance to see the watery landscape of green fields and sleepy villages in the rice-growing area of the mekong Delta, the capital and largest city of cambodia, phnom penh, and one of the most important archaeological sites in south-east asia, the temples of angkor.

the third longest river in the world, the yangtze flows from its source in Qinghai province, where it is called tongtian (‘through heaven’), almost 4,000 miles eastwards through china’s dramatic and varied scenery into the east china sea at shanghai, dividing china into north and south.

most cruises travel between chongqing and Wuhan in the southwest, through the thousands of years of history and timeless beauty of the three Gorges to the modern magnificence of the three Gorges Hydroelectric river Dam, which spans the yangtze and, at more than five times the size of Hoover Dam, is the largest in the world.

many of the luxury cruise companies also offer the opportunity for you to combine your holiday with land tours and/or rail journeys so you can experience the best of china and meld the wonders of the yangtze with a visit to the world-famous terracotta Warriors in Xian or the Great Wall of china.

make sure you also have time to explore Beijing. Visit tiananmen square; tour the mysterious Forbidden city; walk among the elegant buildings and landscaped grounds of the 700-acre summer palace; and stroll along the sacred Way, a tree-lined avenue of massive animal sculptures guarding the ming tombs.

Burma’s largest river and most important commercial waterway and lifeline, the irrawaddy flows from north to south through this time warp of a country that, in many ways, has changed very little since British colonial times. the tourism boycott that persuaded many to steer clear of Burma (or myanmar) for over a decade has been lifted and this once isolated nation now welcomes visitors while its beauty and charm have remained unspoilt.

the irrawaddy (or ayeyarwady) is one of the most pleasurable ways to see Burma. as you glide by, children run along the riverbank from small teak and bamboo dwellings, ox carts cultivate the fields and elegant monasteries and ancient temples rise above the trees. During dry season it’s possible to travel from Bhamo, just 50 miles from the chinese border, and discover the remote northernmost reaches of the irrawaddy. the most common cruise though is from Bagan to mandalay, exploring 2,000-year-old temples, remote villages and important Buddhist sites in this mysterious yet welcoming country.

Mississippirising in northern minnesota and meandering slowly southwards for 2,530 miles to the mississippi river Delta at the Gulf of mexico, the mississippi is the world’s fourth longest river. the mississippi river valley is one of the most fertile agricultural regions of the united states, which resulted in the river’s storied steamboat era of around 1830 to 1870, and it is in this region, the south-central united states, where you can best experience the history, heritage and culture of america’s heartland on a cruise.

Between 2008 and 2012 cruises were virtually non-existent here when the river was beset with flooding and an oil spill, and two lines operating on the river went bust. But they’re back in business and the golden age of mississippi steamboats is being recreated and

Amazonthe amazon river is huge, expanding during the wet season to 30 miles wide or more. it contains a fifth of all the water in all the rivers in the world, and the amount it discharges into the atlantic is greater than that of the next seven largest rivers combined, ten times that of the mississippi alone.

the river runs through Brazil, columbia and peru – and you can cruise on big ships and small, although the larger vessels primarily sail only as far as manaus in Brazil. more traditional vessels can venture deeper into the river’s peruvian roots, where the banks are covered by dense, lush rainforest.

and for most people who yearn to come here, venturing into the heart of the jungle, the wildlife is the main draw. the amazon rainforest is home to more than one-third of all animal species in the world and more than 2,100 species of fish swim in the river basin alone. the Bolivian section of the river is a great place to spot wildlife such as caimans, piranhas (you can fish them and eat them for breakfast), monkeys, macaws and pink river dolphins. Boat trips here often include a jungle walk to a native amazon community.

you can also cruise along amazon’s three powerful tributaries: the marañón, the ucayali, and the puinahua and visit pacaya samiria reserve, a world filled with brilliant birds, playful amazon monkeys, graceful hawks and herons and millions of butterflies

But where human life is scarce your river ship will bring all the luxuries of home into the rainforest with you, allowing both creatures and comfort.

Nilethe river nile conjures images of pharaohs and hieroglyphics, of ancient temples and deserts and valleys, and of sun-baked sands turned into fertile flats with the annual floods. But the egyptian nile valley with its mummies and pyramids is only a section of this, the world’s longest river, which flows north from rwanda through tanzania, uganda, sudan and ethiopia to egypt and the mediterranean sea.

cruises on the nile focus on the magnificent egyptian stretch between the tourist mecca of luxor and beautiful aswan – this section is home to the nation’s best-preserved monuments. and as the sun-god ra was believed to be ferried across the sky daily in a boat, cruising is an easy way to visit the sites of old – luxor, Karnak, Kom ombo, edfu, Dendera, the valley of the Queens and valley of the Kings all converge on the banks of the river.

the cairo-to-luxor section of the nile reopened to cruise ships last year after a 15-year ban that was put in place due to concern over water levels. now you can also visit the Great pyramid, one of the seven Wonders of the ancient World, and the iconic site of the sphinx.

RhineWinding 830km northeast from the swiss alps to the north sea, the rhine has defined this part of the european continent for centuries – as the historic barrier between celtic and Germanic tribes, as the backbone of the Frankish, carolingian and Holy roman empires and, later, as the much disputed border between France and Germany.

one of the most spectacular sites in europe must be the view from the river as it winds through the rhine Gorge, a 65km section of the rhine between Koblenz and Bingen in Germany. steep vine-clad cliffs slope sharply skywards from quaint clustered villages on the river’s banks, crumbling castles from ancient times perched precariously on promontories above.

and as well as this magnificent stretch of the ‘heroic rhine’ of literature and legend, there are many more stunning vistas and historic sites along its route, justifiably making it one of the world’s most popular rivers with cruise holidaymakers – from Basel in switzerland to amsterdam in the netherlands, the river winds through the beautiful alsace region of France, multicultural strasbourg, and the ancient cities of speyer and cologne.

Discover the music of the river immortalised by strauss in the Blue Danube waltz for yourself as it flows through an ever-changing landscape of picturesque valleys and perfect panoramas, its glorious banks forming a patchwork of picturebook castles, medieval monasteries, luscious vineyards, historic cities and tranquil villages.

the river is ideal for cruise holidays and offers many diverse wonders, from austria’s picturesque Wachau Valley and the magnificent cities of Budapest and Bratislava, to imperial Vienna and romania’s impressive iron Gates Gorge. most cruises run from april until october, starting from various points in passau, Vienna and Budapest, sailing upstream to Vienna and touring riverside towns of cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses along the way.

Elbeperhaps the least well known of central europe’s major rivers, a cruise on the elbe is the perfect way to see the natural beauty of saxony and discover the treasures of Germany and the czech republic. From Bohemia in the northwest the river runs through beautiful countryside and historic cities all the way into the north sea near Hamburg where the elbe basin is home to some of the most rewarding and breathtaking vistas of europe.

Bookended by stays in buzzing Berlin and picturesque prague, an elbe cruise allows you to tour the opulent palaces of saxon monarchs, glide between the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Germany’s ‘saxon switzerland’, marvel at the beautifully restored capital city of saxony, Dresden, and see how the famous meissenware porcelain is produced. you may also have the opportunity to visit the well-known Wittenberg church where martin luther posted his 95 theses in 1517, beginning the protestant reformation.

Greatest river Journeys

Douro and Poa wonderful way to explore the southern european countries of italy, portugal and spain is by river, and new cruise itineraries have been launched that offer distinctive experiences.

italian cruises on the po river start in the unique waterways of venice, where cruise ships can moor along the astonishing quayside from st mark’s square and the Grand canal. the islands of Burano and murano in the venice lagoon are well worth visiting, while longer cruises offer excursions to cities such as padua and verona.

From portugal’s second city of porto the scenic river Douro extends inland through vineyards producing the port wine for which this region is famous. a Douro river cruise travels upstream through steep gorges almost to the spanish border and offers time to explore the historic spanish city of salamanca, the church-shrine of lamego over 600 steps above the town, and the Baroque mateus palace at vila real.

the seine and rhône rivers are wonderful routes into the heart of France, allowing you to access the north of the country, including paris and normandy, or head south to the sunny rhône, visiting lively chalon-sur-saône and avignon.

a seine cruise of course takes you into the heart of paris, dubbed the world’s most romantic city, but there’s plenty more to see along the way. experience history firsthand at the normandy beaches, site of the allied invasion on D-Day in 1944; delight in the Gothic architecture of rouen, and see where Joan of arc was tried and executed; lose yourself in the exquisite gardens of Giverny that inspired the impressionist painter claude monet; and walk the cobblestone streets of provincial vernon.

the rhône river flows to the mediterranean through the gastronomic capital of lyon and the picturesque wine regions of Beaujolais and cotes du rhone. cruising north from lyon to chalon-sur- saône are tournus and the pretty pastoral villages of Beaujolais and the maconnais wine region. south of lyon tournon and tain l’Hermitage face each other across the rhone, and as the river approaches the mediterranean, the famous bridge at avignon and the huge palace of the popes appears on the horizon. 8

GREATEST RIVER JOURNEYS

Volga and Russian waterways

The Volga-Baltic Waterway is a series of canals and rivers in Russia that link the Volga River with the Baltic Sea and is becoming increasingly popular as a cruise destination. But life along Europe’s longest and largest river looks very much like it always has – the people going about their days in stunning wooded settings of pine and birch, their villages and churches backed by rolling hills.

A cruise of the waterways will take you from ancient Golden Ring towns such as Yaroslavl, Uglich and Mandrogy to the great cities of Moscow and St Petersburg and provides a wonderful way to gain an insight into Russia’s past and present. A two-week cruise will include stays in both cities, touring Moscow’s Kremlin and Red Square, and Catherine’s Palace and the Hermitage in St Petersburg, before

As the Aegean Odyssey makes its way up the Yangon river, passengers gather on the observation Deck for their first glimpse of the

spectacular shwedagon Pagoda, glinting in the midday sun. the air is thick with excitement; the sense of anticipation palpable.

our voyage started in singapore, with calls in thailand (Phuket) and malyasia (Kuala lumpur, Penang and malacca), but the real draw of this trip is Burma. although a number of cruise lines have added the former capital, Yangon, to their itineraries since the country opened to tourists, the small size of Voyages to antiquity’s ship means that it is able to sail right up the river into the heart of the city, rather than berthing at the main cruise terminal, a good 90 minutes away. as we pass the many overladen barges and rusty fishing vessels which chug alongside us – all waves and beaming smiles, eager to get a closer look – it becomes clear that our ship is still an uncommon sight.

the build-up to our Burma experience started the previous day, which was spent cruising the island-dappled waters of the andaman sea. We awoke to a perfect sunrise, the water smooth and glassy, occasionally interrupted by an orderly row of hut-like wooden fishing boats, stretching endlessly into the pink horizon. “sea gypsies,” suggested a fellow onlooker. after the daily struggle between a ‘healthy’ breakfast on the lido Deck and a much more indulgent one, on offer were two lectures: one from former war reporter and politician martin Bell, and another from journalist Justin Wintle charting Burma’s struggle for independence. these were of course interspersed with some poolside relaxation, before an evening showing of the film The Lady, the story of aung san suu Kyi’s role in Burma’s democracy movement.

the ship docks early, in time to catch shwedagon Pagoda at its best – dusk. on the short journey through the crumbling colonial streets of downtown Yangon, our enthusiastic guide thi thi hurtles through an informative yet entertaining introduction. With a 99-metre-high stupa, gilded and diamond-tipped, shwedagon – or the Golden Pagoda – is the country’s most precious possession. according to legend, it’s the oldest pagoda in the world, and as the only one to hold the relics of the last four Buddhas, the most sacred.

in the distance, it towers like a golden mountain against a thundery sky. up close, in the waning light, it is even more breathtaking; a maze of colour and reflection. the atmosphere is peaceful: an old monk kneels before an image in an alcove of mirrored tiles; incense wafts from a shrine adorned with flowers as a father helps his son light a candle; nearby a family wash the head of a Buddha with a blessing and a prayer; children play; teenagers gossip. it is hard to believe that this has been the site of historic political demonstrations and revolutionary speeches, earthquakes and colonial raids. When the sun sets and we have taken our photos, on thi thi’s orders we sit for a moment on some steps to contemplate and drink it all in.

Day two in Burma takes us to Bago, a city 50 miles outside Yangon. our bus passes through dusty villages, watermelons stacked high along the roadside, and across government-owned farmland, teak-forested hills in the distance. at one point we gain a police escort. no one is entirely sure why, but thi thi says it is because “we are ViP”.

our first stop is a Buddhist monastery, where monks, robed in brick red, line up for their last meal

of the day – a strange and solemn sight. “this is a rare treat,” says thi thi. “We are the only monster car in this place!” Peering through the crowds, we realise that this is not strictly true – though there are few other Western faces. tourism is new here, and after decades of isolation by military rule, Burma has in some ways changed little since British colonial times; it is a world apart from surrounding countries. mcDonalds and starbucks are yet to emerge, but 7-elevens are popping up, and the time to visit the country is now, before it becomes too commercialised. and while independent travel in Burma still has its difficulties, Voyages to antiquity’s cruise provides the ultimate hassle-free way to visit, with even your visa sorted for you.

next stop is Bago’s colossal reclining Buddha, one of the largest in the world, before a lunch of local cuisine overlooking another of Burma’s magnificent pagodas, shwemawdaw. the green tea leaf salad

is an unexpected delight, accompanied by christmas carols from an equally unexpected string quartet in santa hats. the rest of the day is packed full of interesting visits, including a beautifully maintained war memorial and a roadside guardian spirit shrine under an enormous banyan tree, where we witness the blessing of a new taxi. the shore excursions

are included in the price, and are of excellent quality, with a strong focus on history and culture. alternative optional trips by air to the ancient empires of Bagan and mandalay are also available, should you fancy venturing further afield.

our final morning in the country is spent in the bustling labyrinth of Bogyoke, or scott’s market, a bazaar as good for people-watching as it is for shopping. on our way there thi thi keeps up her breathless commentary. “People are not in a rush here,” she says as we pass a group of young men seeking shade under a gnarled mahogany. and true enough, when we arrive at 10am the vendors are laying out their wares at a leisurely pace. We pass stall upon stall of silver, gold and gemstones; women, faces smeared with thanaka – a white paste used as protection from the sun – sell traditional sarongs and laquerware; small children hawk fragrant sandalwood fans in front of jade statuettes and rosewood carvings. the vendors are warm and gracious; shy to practice their english. the children are persistent yet not crowding. early on thi thi announced emphatically “this is really the nicest country to visit in asia.” and in spite of its brutal past and uncertain future, three days have been enough to convince us that she might not be far wrong.

BURMA & THE TREASURES OF MALAYSIAA 16-day round trip from Singapore with Voyages to Antiquity sailing on 23 February 2014 starts from £3,295 per person, based on a double occupancy cabin and including daily shore excursions, gratuities, wine with dinner and scheduled flights. differenceFrom helping to protect endangered orangutans to funding a school in china, there are plenty of opportunities to give something back while you’re on your cruise

Holidays are meant to be relaxing, so who would want to be gardening, packing food or clearing rubbish on their cruise? plenty of us, it turns out, as ‘voluncruising’ becomes the latest trend and

holidaymakers give something back to the communities that they visit, either by funding projects through donations, or getting stuck in to help.

“We’ve already seen incredibly positive ripple effects in peoples’ lives,” says philip ordever, Vice president international sales for crystal, which offers free hands-on volunteer excursions. “Feedback has been incredible, with stories of tears, hugs, pen pals and generosity above and beyond anything we could have hoped for.”

it makes sense for cruise lines to protect their destinations, and Hurtigruten takes part in an arctic beach-clearing campaign. “We want to be ingratiated into the fabric of the community and in svalbard the ‘clean up’ operation is one of the practical ways we can do this,” explains uK mD Kathryn Beadle. “rubbish is transported by the Gulf stream and accumulates there, so its removal is an ongoing job. passengers relish the opportunity to do something practical and be more than just a visitor.”

some cruise lines offer excursions to see how funding has helped, such as the primary school in Jingzhou that was built and is sponsored by Viking river cruises, and p&o’s Green World tours that help kindergartens in croatia and a children’s home in Kuala lumpur.

Wildlife has been a long-standing favourite for cruise line funding. Holland america line’s ‘cruise with purpose’ programme covers everything from planting trees in koala habitats in australia to becoming a ‘citizen scientist’ on alaskan whale-watching expeditions and small ship expedition line orion has established a relationship with renowned primatologist Dr Galdikas at the camp leakey orangutan sanctuary in Borneo.

How far in advance should you book a cruise in order

to get the best deal?

A. The most important aspect of a cruise is selecting the right cruise line, ship, itinerary and date so that holiday expectations will be met and you’ll have a wonderful time. Once that decision is made, it is then important to act early as availability is limited, particularly on popular itineraries. A cruise is different to a hotel where you can simply move your dates a few days either side to fi nd availability. As cruise ships sail on fi xed itineraries, you may miss your preferred choice if your dates don’t match.

Booking early also ensures you get the best choice of accommodation on your chosen sailing. And obviously booking early means you can start planning your holiday – you may want to arrange a number of trips ashore, a special treat in the spa or perhaps a romantic dinner for two in a speciality restaurant to make your cruise holiday even more memorable.

And, of course, your local ACE member travel agent can help you with all these selections – sifting through the many different cruise lines and destinations to fi nd the perfect one for you. Andy Harmer

A. Having just cruised around South Africa, and found it one of the most exciting, diverse and spectacular places I’ve ever visited, I would encourage you to book your cruise asap. There is so much to see, but my top tips would be to take in the craft markets in Cape Town, and to go on excursions to the nearby award-winning vineyards and The Garden Route. (Best of all, treat yourselves to an early morning hot-air balloon ride over the vineyards if you can.)

I would also pick a cruise that stops at Walvis Bay in Namibia – from here you can fl y inland to Omguma and experience a magical safari which isn’t commercialised. Many cruises also take in Madagascar and Mauritius, both blessed with beautiful beaches. It’s also a very favourable time for us to visit currency-wise: a glass of wine costs around £1.25, and main meals are between £5 and £7.

Fred. Olsen, Regent, Crystal, Holland America, Cunard and P&O all offer cruises to Africa – so you’re spoilt for choice for what to do and who to travel with. Julie Peasgood

A. Private jet cruising is when you take the same plane from one destination to another – just as you would a ship. The advantage is that you’re able to stay overnight or longer, so you can really immerse yourself in the culture and history of the regions you’re travelling to, and you’re able to get much closer to famous sights such as the Himalayas. You’re also fully escorted. So for example at The Captain’s Choice we offer itineraries including a journey from Istanbul to Russia which takes you into the heart of the Ukraine. You stop off to explore each destination and stay overnight or longer, and you don’t have to worry about your luggage as this is taken care of, and expedited customs and immigration is arranged where possible. Itineraries can include river and ship cruises, which makes them very popular with those who love cruising but want to try something different. Gary Bartelings

I’m thinking about taking a cruise to Africa – do you have any tips about where to go/who to travel with?

I keep hearing about private jet cruising. Can

The celebrated chef reveals his favourite places and culinary

inspiration from his youth

Marco Pierre

White

All my life I’ve loved ships, since I was a little boy reading about the history of The Normandie, the most glamorous ship everbuilt at its time. One of my favourite pastimes as achild was fi shing forcod from boats o the eastcoast, and I’ve had a love a air with the sea since.

I had a certain perception of cruising but when I went on my fi rst cruise on Ventura it was like a giant resort on the sea, quite amazing. Would I take my children on a cruise holiday in the Mediterranean of Caribbean? Yes I would – they would explore the whole ship and fi nd it totally fascinating. I think a cruise is one of the most glorious ways to experience the cuisine of the world in two weeks. It is, in essence, a gourmet tour of the fi nest, the most authentic, the freshest and the most local dishes which will have you desperate to return for more.

“My favourite places are Jamaica, Jersey, Venice and Bardolino, my mother’s village in Italy.”

My love of food and my love of all things Italian are inherent in me, they are in my genes. The greatest culinary infl uence in my life came from my very beautiful and very Italian mother, a natural-born cook. Her family lived just outside Genoa where I used to spend my summer holidays as a little boy. My earliest memories are of my mother taking me home for lunch where we would sit together and giggle and eat steaming bowls of risotto, pasta and thick hearty soups made with root vegetables, pulses and a little rice and Parmesan. She steered clear of fussy food and heavy sauces and sometimes lunch would be very ripe tomatoes with a little sea salt, olive oil and bread and cheese.

I had probably one of the best fi sh meals of my life with a friend in the fi sh market in Vigo, Spain. We just asked for a selection of specialities and had the most wonderfulbaby octopus in fresh tomato sauce, we hadGalician seafood stew, the best paella and the freshestgambas, simplyroasted.

I have owned many restaurants but never one on a ship. To me, the sea is romantic and dangerous and provides a challenge. My restaurant on Ventura, in particular, is the realisation of a dream. When I was a boy I longed to go to sea and even now I feel a tranquillity and peace when I am by the water. The White Room on Ventura enables me to spend time at sea and allows me to use seasonal produce to create memorable dishes. Sitting on the terrace of The White Room watching a Caribbean or Mediterranean sunset is a magical moment and if I have helped in a small

way to create these moments for passengers, then I am

very pleased.

Marco will be onVentura on 7 April
