SECRETS OF A NEUROSCIENTISTSpeaker: Dr Cathy Stinear – Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Auckland.

Discover everything from how to keep your marbles as you age (spoiler alert – it's not Sudoku!) to why your teenager is such a disaster sometimes (there's a reason they can't hire a car until they reach 25, yet we let them drink and vote!) Find out whether our digital addictions are rotting our brains, whether you absolutely need 10,000 hours of practice to hit a golf ball like Tiger Woods, and much more.Tuesday 19 March 7:30pm - 8:30pm

RETHINKING THE REFUGEE CRISISSpeaker: Dr Anna Hood – Senior lecturer at the University of Auckland. She has a BA/LLB (hons) from the

University of Melbourne, an LLM from NYU and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. Her research interests include international law and security, refugee law and disarmament.

The world is the midst of the largest refugee crisis in history. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that there are currently around 65 million people worldwide who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. This talk will challenge a number of common assumptions about the crisis including how it is portrayed, what the causes of it are and how we should address it. It will suggest that not only is our current international system incapable of fixing the crisis but that it is, in fact, one of the key reasons we have a crisis in the first place, and one of the biggest barriers to resolving it.Tuesday 9 April 7:30pm - 8:30pm

SAVING THE PLANET – AT 400 KM/H!Speaker: Dr Eva Hakansson – Eva Hakansson is a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the

University of Auckland.

Eva Hakansson will take you on a high-speed adventure at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats. She readily admits that her 400+ km/h, red, sexy, bullet-shaped electric motorcycle “KillaJoule” is really just “eco-activism in disguise”. Did we mention that she built it in her backyard shed, in her spare time? With the same dedication as a Greenpeace activist, she uses the unusual channel of high speed racing to open people’s eyes and minds for sustainable technology.Tuesday 30 April 7:30pm - 8:30pm

THINK TALKS

Our very popular THINKTalks continue in 2019 with a series of talks given by specially invited speakers.

Called on to be fresh, riveting and original, these speakers will ignite your curiosity and challenge your perspective on matters of substance, before responding to your comments and questions from the floor. With a similar format to TED Talks, this series will be sure to spark some crisp debate.

DANCING FOR HOPESpeaker: Dr Nicholas Rowe – Graduate of the Australian Ballet School and holds a PhD from the London

Contemporary Dance School, University of Kent at Canterbury.

How can cross-cultural arts projects cause political trouble? Across the world, international development programmes invest heavily on cross-cultural artistic projects as a form of cultural diplomacy. While appearing innocuous and inherently beneficial to local communities, artistic interventions can also extend colonial hegemony and cultural appropriation. In this talk Nicholas Rowe shares stories of the intercultural dilemmas that can emerge from artistic exchange. He draws on three decades of cultural work across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.Tuesday 21 May 7:30pm - 8:30pm

EXPLORING FOR LIFE BEYOND EARTHSpeaker: Professor Kathleen Campbell – Astrobiologist, paleoecologist and geologist. She trained in the USA

and joined the University of Auckland in 1997.

Little green (wo)men are out; microbes are in. The search for life beyond Earth has accelerated in recent decades since the lull following the Mars Viking missions of the 1970s. Both the 'Goldilocks Zone" and Icy Worlds are receiving intense scrutiny. This talk will cover what, how and why in the quest for extra-terrestrial life in the Solar System in the current and coming decades, especially on the Red Planet. We will also touch on how the search for the earliest fossils on Earth aids exploration for ET-life, the burden of planetary protection for future robotic and human space missions, and plans.Tuesday 11 June 7:30pm - 8:30pm

WHO "WON" THE US-SOVIET SPACE RACE?Speaker: Dr Jennifer Frost – Historian of 20th century United States society, politics and culture at the University

of Auckland.

The 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing offers an opportunity for reflecting on the history of the Cold War space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. An arena in which the two superpowers battled for global dominance, it propelled both nations to pursue rapid scientific research and technological advances and demanded massive economic support and political commitment. Explore connections between Cold War politics and superpower science, and engage with the question of whether the US or the Soviet Union 'won' the Cold War space race. With a historical perspective, we see the answer is not a simple one.Tuesday 2 July 7:30pm - 8:30pm

LEARNINGS FROM A LIFETIME OF LISTENINGSpeaker: Debra Lampshire – Facilitator of Hearing Voices Groups and provides training nationally and

internationally. Professional Teaching Fellow at The University of Auckland and Project Manager for the Auckland District Health Board.

For several decades Debra listened to multiple voices all declaring themselves experts. They spoke to her of how she should live her life, what she should do, how she should do it and what was wrong with her. They passed judgments on her appearance, her activities, her relationships. They degraded her successes and emphasised her failures. They ridiculed and patronised her, loved and hated her. No area of her life was immune from their commentary and criticism. Finally Debra asserted herself and began to reclaim her authentic self. Today she speaks of the accumulated wisdom she extracted from dialogues held with those who insisted they knew best.Tuesday 23 July 7:30pm - 8:30pm

ANATOMY OF A MINDFUL BRAINSpeaker: Dr Eileen Luders – Holder of a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Trained in

neuropsychology and neuroscience, she now holds a position at the University of Auckland.

In her talk, Dr Luders will first introduce the phenomenon of neuroplasticity and then demonstrate how the study of mindfulness fits into this field of research. More specifically, she will present outcomes from an ongoing science project designed to analyse brain features in long-term meditation practitioners. The project comprises more than a dozen studies – all of them revealing exciting insights into the unique brain anatomy of meditators, including evidence of their seemingly younger brains.Tuesday 6 August 7:30pm - 8:30pm

CAN WE AGE SUCCESSFULLY?Speaker: Dr Nigel George – Director of the Psychology Clinic at the University of Auckland.

People in virtually all countries around the world are living longer than ever before. There have always been a few individuals that have lived into their 80's, 90's and even their 100's; however, we now have a rapidly expanding population of older people both in New Zealand and around the world. Interestingly, we seem ill prepared to answer the question of how to use all this extra time we have been fortunate to create for ourselves. This has led to researchers beginning to explore the question of how we might age successfully? In this talk we will look at ideas from around the world and various research groups on how we might physically, psychologically, and socially age successfully.Tuesday 3 September 7:30pm - 8:30pm

TIME FOR DISRUPTION IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY – A CIRCULAR ECONOMYSpeaker: Miriam Seifert – holds a Masters of International Business.

Increases in purchasing and consumption habits have led to increases in waste and pollution around the world. Companies adopted a 'take, make and dispose' approach, which led to unimaginable repercussions for society and environment. 2,700 litres of water (one person's drinking water for almost three years) is needed to produce one cotton T-shirt, and about 10,000 litres of water for a pair of jeans. Textiles account for 4 per cent of all waste sent to New Zealand landfills. The concept of a circular economy or the regenerative economy seems to provide a solution.Tuesday 22 October 7:30pm - 8:30pm

THE GREAT HUMPBACK WHALE TRAILSpeaker: Associate Professor Rochelle Constantine – Conservation biologist and behavioural ecologist.

Despite near extinction from commercial whaling, humpback whales are slowly recovering after 50 years of protection. They undertake one of the longest known migrations, the complexity of which has only recently been revealed. A multi-disciplinary approach using non-lethal research tools e.g., satellite telemetry, genetics, aging and hormone analysis, gives us the best understanding of the humpback whales. With the focus now on their role as ecosystem engineers and how climate change affects population recovery, there are interesting questions needing answers.Tuesday 12 November 7:30pm - 8:30pm

A $5 donation on arrival at the door is appreciated but not compulsory. For more information on the speakers please visit our website.

Please visit our website for more information about GET REAL including a schedule of topics, guest speakers, activities and affiliated community organisations and costs.

HEALTH, WELL-BEING & FITNESS – TAI CHITai Chi is meditation in motion. Come and learn a series of slow, continuous movements that will promote physical and mental well-being, and improve coordination and balance.

The elementary level of Tai Chi teaches you the correct stances and movements that cultivate the flow of chi (energy) in your body. Most students practise at elementary level for a year or more. The focus is on developing the rounded and relaxed movements (steps) of Tai Chi with the correct posture. Once students can perform their steps accurately and with second-nature, the focus shifts to feeling chi in the body.

In the second level of Tai Chi, the focus of learning is to develop an awareness of the balance between internal and external chi. Students may study at this level for several years before progressing. As demand develops, we will offer higher levels of Tai Chi. Please enquire.

Should we praise these narratives for creating strong female characters and for presenting a uniquely female perspective?
