Highly qualified veterinary specialist Jacob Michelsen under took the independent review, which was a key action announced by General Manager Alan Eldridge in his open letter to the community on 7 April. Dr Michelsen’s report assessed both the physical infrastructure at the facility as well as its management, policies and procedures. “The review found many positive aspects of the shelter and while there are also many recommendations for changes and improvements, it’s important to not lose sight of the substantial improvements that have been made over the past few years,” Dr Michelsen said. “The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter is capable of becoming a model facility showing the way forward in humane companion animal care.” The scope of the review was to not only asses GRAS against current legislation, but to compare it against best practice in animal management and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals draft guidelines and standards. “The review confirmed the shelter was compliant with current legislation, but we are committed to being a best practice facility in line with the recommendations,” Mr Eldridge said. “These recommendations will be put into place as soon as possible and I would like to assure the community that all past issues at the shelter have been addressed. “More than $70,000 worth of improvements for the shelter will also be determined by Council at the 30 May Ordinary Meeting, including an exercise area for animals and creating a long-term strategy for management of the facility.” Mr Eldridge thanked Dr Michelsen for the in-depth review, which was completed two weeks ahead of schedule. The City of Wagga Wagga has publicly released an external review of the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter (GRAS).

The harsh realities of alcohol-related violence and underage drinking are the focus of two new community campaigns being rolled out in Wagga Wagga.

‘One Punch Can Kill’ and ‘Rethink That Sneaky Drink’ campaigns focus on consequences of people’s actions when under the influence of alcohol, and reinforces the city’s no-tolerance approach to alcohol-fuelled violence and defiance of the law.

“Both campaigns have a strong youth focus, aged 13 to 25 years, and are about educating the community to think about their decisions and behaviours. The take-home message is think before you drink as there can be real life-changing consequences,” Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said.

The ‘One Punch Can Kill’ campaign highlights that a split second decision could result in a jail sentence for a minimum of eight years.

‘Rethink That Sneaky Drink’ reinforces Wagga Wagga’s blanket rule of being caught underage drinking at any pub, club or restaurant, means you’ll be barred from entering a licensed premises in the city until your 19th birthday.

Campaign posters have been put up at five bus stops across the city and supplied to pubs and clubs. Wagga Wagga high schools are also being approached to help spread the message.

Wagga Wagga Local Area Command Licensing Supervisor Sergeant Nigel Turney said a united front by local liquor accord, licensees, police and other key stakeholders has helped with a general decline in alcohol-related problems in Wagga.

The campaigns are initiatives of the City of Wagga Wagga and have the backing of the Wagga Wagga Liquor Accord, the Australian Hotels Association NSW Sub Branch and the NSW Police Wagga Wagga Local Area Command.

Joint campaign to tackle underage drinking, violence

Local community organisations, groups and individuals have until Monday 30 May to apply for a share of $175,000.

Applications to the Annual Grants Program 2016/17 can be made across six categories for community-focused groups and individuals in the Local

Government Area.“These grants are part of

Council’s commitment to developing our vibrant and diverse community,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said.

“Through the grants program, Council supports a wide range

of services and activities that build community capacity, foster social networks and information exchange, facilitate cooperation and build on existing community strengths.”

An independent investigation into the City of Wagga Wagga’s Director Planning and Regulatory Services is in its final stages.

Council has been advised that a draft investigation report is expected by the end of this week.

Mr Andrew Crakanthorp was placed on paid special leave from 1 February following allegations made

against him. Council will consider recommendations in the report and a right of reply from Mr Crakanthorp before any formal decision is made.

No further public comment will be made until a final decision has been reached.

Council appreciates the community’s continued patience regarding this matter.

Director Planning and Regulatory Services investigation update

FLYING HIGH: The Wagga Wagga Airport terminal will be getting a $2M facelift thanks to the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The project will increase seating capacity, incorporate an internal baggage claim carousel, additional passenger amenities, see an expansion of the café, a lounge area, combined business and leisure stations and tourism information. Last chance to apply for Annual Grants

Wagga students were given the opportunity to share their view on what they want for a Wagga of the future.

Week two of Wagga View shifted to a schools program, where more than 200 Wagga students took part in activities that shared ideas and views on favourite spaces and places in the city. Using building blocks and a whole lot of creativity students also got to build a city they would like for the future.

The Wagga View Race was also run and won during the week. Three teams from TAFE NSW Riverina Institute, The Leisure Company and The Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga took part in a race across the city.

Teams competed in activities that reflected the liveability of Wagga. Challenges included learning what it was like to be a firefighter at the Turvey Park Fire Station and taking part in a crime and safety quiz hosted by Wagga Police at Wagga Beach.

The overall winner of the race, based on time and points scored for each activity was The Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga.

Week three of Wagga View kicks off on Monday 30 May with the first of 27 stops on the ultimate Wagga View Road Show.

From Tarcutta to Tatton, Glenfield

to Galore, Ladysmith to Lake Albert, Charlie, Council’s community engagement truck will be coming to visit your suburb or village.

Power and passion on show at the museumThe story behind one of

Australia’s most iconic and important bands is being played out at the Museum of the Riverina.

The Making of Midnight Oil captures the excitement, the big issues and the sound of the band, from early days as Farm on Sydney’s Northern Beaches through to their infamous daytime protest concert outside Exxon’s New York corporate headquarters.

Along with celebrating the band’s extensive career, the new exhibition will bring rare

memorabilia – and original band members – to town.

“The Making of Midnight Oil is jam packed with rare and iconic items including stage props, instruments, protest banners, hand written lyrics, photographs and posters sourced from public and private collections as well as the band’s own archives,” Museum Manager Luke Grealy said.

“Along with the exhibition, there are some special events over the June long weekend including opportunities to meet original Oils members, a gig by the

Backsliders and a curator’s tour.”The Backsliders, featuring blues

legend Dom Turner and Oils drummer Rob Hirst, will bring the Historic Council Chambers to life for the 11 June gig.

The Making of Midnight Oil was developed by Manly Art Gallery and Museum Curator Ross Heathcote in collaboration with Rob Hirst and is on display at the Historic Council Chambers now until 21 August.

He may not be bringing his swimmers and surfboard to ride the 5 o’clock wave, but Joel Creasey is ready to make a splash in Wagga next week.

Known as “the Crown Prince of Comedy”, Joel has entertained crowds across Australia and the world with his acid-tongued wit.

He will be in the city as part of the second Wagga Comedy Fest, joining some of Australia’s funniest people like Hannah Gadsby, Sammy J, Aunty Donna and Triple J breakfast host Matt Okine.

“I’ve never been to Wagga before so I’ll be bringing a best-of show – all my funniest and most scandalous stories that I can’t talk about on television,” Joel said.

“I’ve done shows around Australia and the world, but I’ve never been to Wagga and I’m pumped.

“I love seeing new places. I always find regional audiences are the best to perform in front of.

“I love performing live, it’s much better than TV because I can really go to town on people,”

The 2016 festival features a diverse line up, with the comedians complemented by a Class Clown workshop and some unique shows.

“Last year was really well supported, but being the inaugural festival we also learned a lot and we’ve used that feedback to make sure the 2016 festival is even better,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell.

“There’s literally something for everyone - we’ve got a special late night event with The Wine Bluffs, a hilarious show for the kids with Frank Woodley and something a bit different with Cinema Fiasco where you get to poke some fun at B grade movies.”

An evening with Sammy J and Randy has changed.

The purple puppet is under the weather and is under strict orders from the doctor to take a break.

Luckily, Sammy J is fighting fit and will be bringing The Sammy J Songbook to the Wagga Comedy Fest on Saturday 4 June at 7.30pm.

All ticket holders will have the option of a refund, or retaining their tickets to see Sammy J sans Randy.

“I was shocked to learn that Randy has leprosy, but it’s given

me time to concentrate on my memoir, Fifty Shades of J,” Sammy J said.

Randy was unavailable for comment, but a source close to the felt-faced comedian clarified the condition was in fact pneumonia.

It’s a gesture that’s put smiles on Aussie kids and Aussie truckies faces for generations.

Standing by the side of the road and frantically lifting your arm up and down in the hope a passing truck driver would give a friendly honk on the truck horn is as Aussie as the Australian trucking industry itself.

The tradition has now been crafted in steel and installed by the road side in Tarcutta – a town steeped in trucking history.

Arm Horn is the work of Australian qualified blacksmith William Maguire and illustrates two children using the arm pull gesture and a toddler innocently waving to passing truck drivers.

There’s also a sandstone visitors rock between the steel-sculptured children for Tarcutta kids, tourists and truckies to interact with the artwork and capture the gesture on camera.

Mr Maguire’s own memories of waving to truck drivers and getting them to honk their horn was the inspiration for the art work. He wanted to create something playful, but meaningful.

“The Arm Horn sculpture is aimed at kids’ sense of fun and their great ability to be entertained by little more than a passing vehicle. The work plays with ideas of youthful freedom and innocence and the inevitable changes we all go through,” Mr Maguire said.

Tarcutta Progress Association has worked with Wagga Council from the beginning to help bring the public art work to life.

Arm Horn is located at the southern end of the Sydney Street road reserve, across from the Tarcutta truck driver’s memorial.

The work is part of the Wagga Works Public Art Plan and cost $25,000.

CELEBRATE: Cutting the cake to celebrate Wagga Wagga City Library’s 70th birthday is Executive Director Riverina Regional Library Robert Knight, Peter Gissing, grandson of former Mayor H.E.Gissing who championed for a free public library in 1936, President of the Friends of the Library Gretchen Sleeman, Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall, Former Chair of Riverina Regional Library Committee Mary Kidson, Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, Councillor Yvonne Braid and Manager Library Services Claire Campbell. A number of other events have also been held to celebrate the library's seven decades, including the One Book One Wagga dinner held last night and a projection artwork, which is being beamed onto the Civic Centre each night.
