Weekly information from us to you

If you’re thinking about applying for a share of the $175,000 available under the 2015-16 Annual Grants Program, then just talk to the Mangain Community Centre (MCC).

The hall’s kitchen has been given a $2000 upgrade after a successful application under the 2014-15 program’s Connected Rural and Urban Communities category.

The MCC is managed by volunteers, who were able to purchase a new stove, microwave, urn, cookware and more with the funding.

“I would encourage other community groups who identify a

need or project to make the effort to apply to Council’s Annual Grants Program to make their project a reality,” MCC volunteer committee secretary Wendy Thompson said.

“Mangain and the surrounding localities have and will continue to benefit from the MCC having indoor cooking facilities as catering is much easier.

The next concert in the Music at Midday concert series will be a special Anzac tribute show.

There will be two performances on Wednesday 1 April at midday and at the family-friendly time of 6pm. Both concerts will feature Australian Army Band Kapooka.

Major Peter Thomas has developed a playlist for the performances that pays tribute to memory, but has also included more contemporary pieces.

There will be themes from great Australian movies including Gallipoli and Breaker Morant, an Anzac sing-along, an Aussie pop medley of hits from the 70s and 80s and more.

This will be a free concert, with a contribution collected at the end of the concert for the Kapooka charities.

This time the collection will go to the group Soldier On.

Soldier On supports Australian servicemen and women who have been wounded, physically or

psychologically in contemporary conflicts. This includes conflicts after 1990, as well as serving members who were wounded in training or other exercises and individuals working for other government agencies (DFAT, AFP, Customs).

They are not part of the RSL, Legacy or the Department of Veterans Affairs, but are excited to work with these organisations to support Australia’s young servicemen and women.

Soldier On does this in several different ways, in an effort to make a financial, physical and emotional link with those who have been wounded.

The four areas they focus their energies on are: enhancing rehabilitation, adventurous events, community events, and employment and education.

Contact or visit the Civic Theatre Box Office to reserve tickets either by phone 6926 9688, or email [email protected].

Giant River Red Gum branches on a river of crushed glass will soon be standing tall at the Tarcutta and Forsyth streets roundabout.

Wagga Wagga artist John Wood’s design will be the latest Public Art project to add visual impact to the city for locals and visitors alike.

Mr Wood, a trained blacksmith who has exhibited his sculptures nationally, was inspired by the River Red Gum and the fallen branches that journey down the river in floods or break from the tree.

“The sculptural installation for the roundabout will consist of four heavily textured hot forged mild steel solid bars in the form of figures inspired by River Red Gum branches,” Council’s Cultural Officer Tracie Miller said.

“Each branch, reaching up over 4m high, will be fixed onto a flat circular plinth of recycled crushed glass set in resin, which physically connects the four sculptures and represents the Murrumbidgee.”

Council’s senior traffic officer approved the design after assessing it in terms of visibility for drivers, the likelihood of the artwork to distract the driver and impact as

a hazard if the artwork was damaged.Mr Wood has been a practicing artist

for 15 years and across his career has created public artworks for Wagga Wagga City Council, Winton Shire Council,

Lockhart Shire Council, Hay Shire Council and Carrathool Shire Council.

Examples of Mr Wood’s work in Wagga include the “salt and pepper” bike rack on Fitzmaurice Street.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Rod Kendall, is reminding all residents to take part in two surveys about the future of flood management in the city.

Cr Kendall has recorded a special message to encourage the community to take part in the surveys, which cover Main City and North Wagga levee options, and alternative flood management options for North Wagga.

“We’re now asking all community members to take part in a survey,” Cr Kendall said.

“Give us your opinion on what Council should do.”

Cr Kendall’s video message can be found at wagga.nsw.gov.au/floodfutures or via Council’s social media sites.

For more information and to access the surveys, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/floodsurvey. New Your Say Wagga users will need to register to complete the surveys.

What does the City of Wagga Wagga, Port of Brisbane and the Panama

Canal have in common? One word sums it up:

freight.For Wagga Wagga

exporters (and in fact all Australian exporters) to be competitive in the world market they must use the most efficient transport means available.

That involves rail and ship. The shipping companies

are building bigger and more efficient ships (ships that are wider than normal and 300 metres long) with the Panama Canal being upgraded to cater for these super container ships.

Work on the project including widening the locks is well under way and should be completed next year.

From what I have been

told, the only port in Australia capable of handling these ships happens to be the Port of Brisbane.

That’s why it’s vital to have direct rail links with the port and that’s why the proposed new inland rail project linking Melbourne with Brisbane via Wagga Wagga is so important.

Planning for the Wagga

Wagga component, the Riverina Intermodal Freight Logistic Centre (RIFL) at Bomen is well advanced, with Council working closely with a large Australian company to build the infrastructure.

It’s a joint venture between federal, state and local government as well as private enterprise and if it proceeds will include (over stages) 22

kilometres of rail track, with at least one of those lines capable of accommodating three 1.8km long trains.

The expression “build it and they will come” is likely to apply with RIFL expected to become a major economic driver for this city for decades to come.Councillor Greg Conkey

Residents are invited to take advantage of free entry to Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) on Saturday 18 April between 7am and 4.30pm, to dispose of their general domestic waste.

Tip Free Day is an initiative of Wagga Wagga City Council where all Wagga residents can dispose of general domestic waste, including garden waste, mixed recyclables and general household waste for free.

“Tip Free Day is a great opportunity to start the new school term with a tidy house, or to just have a good clean up,” Wagga Wagga City Council Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said.

“The free days complement our normal service that, as a result of increased recycling capability within the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, includes more materials that can be disposed of for free every day.”

Televisions, computers and computer equipment can be disposed of for free, not just on Tip Free Day, but every day that the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre is open, as part of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. This offer is available to householders and small businesses only.

“Another item that can be disposed of for free all year round at GWMC is polystyrene, which Council now reprocesses on-site and is able to be turned into a range of recycled products,” Mr Kausche said.

Disposal of special wastes such as tyres, builder’s wastes, refrigerative items, mattresses and gas bottles are not included in Tip Free Day and will incur a charge as per Council’s 2014/15 Revenue and Pricing Policy.

For a full list of fees and charges, visit Council’s website wagga.nsw.gov.au/waste or phone 1300 292 442.

Council gave in principle support for the Lights 4 Lake project and endorsed proposed community consultation at the March ordinary meeting on Monday night.

The proposed funding model seeks a partnership between Council, NSW Government and Committee 4 Wagga.

The $230,000 project would see an estimated

75 solar powered LED lights installed along the Lake Albert walkway.

Council also advised Committee 4 Wagga it has not yet identified a whole-of-life funding source for the project.

More than 2500 people enjoyed over 40 activities during Seniors Week 2015 in Wagga.

The jam-packed program put together by the Seniors Week Committee and supported by Wagga Wagga City Council proved a hit with the region’s 50-plus population from March 15 to 22.

Organisers ensured there really was something for everyone and that the range of events and activities reflected the diversity of seniors in the community.

The program included everything from comedy, classical music and coach tours to power station walks, live music and hands-on workshops, plus the ever-popular Denise Drysdale.

Both the Seniors Week Committee and Council have received positive feedback from the community about this year’s event.

SPOTLIGHT: Denise Drysdale entertains the crowd during Seniors Week at the Civic Theatre.

WHAT IS IT? Class 4 Noxious Weed-Locally Controlled Weed. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?It is a deciduous thorny shrub and can grow into a dense thicket reaching several metres high and wide. Small flowers 2-3cm across with five white-pink petals develop over summer. The fruit becomes red and then dark purple when ripe and is 2cm in diameter.

WHERE IS IT FOUND?It prefers cooler areas with reasonable rainfall but will grow anywhere with good soil moisture.HOW IS IT SPREAD?Animals and people consume the fruit and disperse it. New plants develop from the fruit’s seeds and canes that have broken off.WHAT CAN I DO?If small plants are

present then herbicide and grubbing out is good. For large patches, a selective herbicide will allow for competing vegetation to remain.

OPERATION OF BOARDING HOUSESWithin the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area there is a range of accommodation types. Included in these accommodation types are premises that Council considers to be boarding houses. Boarding houses are buildings, including dwellings, where lodgings are let out on a per room basis (as opposed to a single lease over a dwelling) for periods of 3 or more months. Development consent is required to operate a boarding house. In recent times Council has received complaints that there are boarding houses in the city operating in dwellings without consent. As people may not have been aware for the need for consent, Council is currently holding an amnesty period, where people can self-report their unapproved boarding houses and lodge a Development Application to seek consent. During this amnesty period Council will waive all Development Application fees associated with an application for a boarding house. The amnesty period is for 12 months commencing February 2015 and will end on 29th February 2016. At the end of the amnesty period Council will commence actively pursuing boarding houses operating without consent, which may result in fines for operators of such premises. If you have any queries in relation to this program, please do not hesitate to contact Council’s Planning and Regulatory Services Directorate on 1300 292 442.
