Funding boost for gallery, museumWagga Wagga City Council’s cultural facilities

will receive a $420,000 boost over the next three years thanks to the NSW Government.

Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant announced the funding on 29 October as part of the $19 million Arts and Cultural Development Program provided through Arts NSW.

With the support of this funding, the Museum of the Riverina will receive $225,000 over three years to deliver a program of research projects, exhibitions, education and public programs and sector outreach services.

Using new methods of presenting history in regional Australia, the museum will interpret the heritage and identity of Wagga Wagga and the Riverina through stories of people, place and environment.

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, home of the National Art Glass Collection, will receive $195,000 for a diverse program of exhibitions, activities and events. These will focus on themes such as glass, printmaking, new and experimental media, performance and emerging creative research.

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE: Professional dancer Jarryd Byrne waltzed into Wagga ahead of his role as the city’s Australia Day Ambassador in January.

The lift on the north side of the Civic Centre will be closed for upgrade works from 2 November until 11 December.

The upgrade will result in the Wagga Wagga City Library and Council operating buttons being separated and relocated adjacent to the relevant door.

Accessibility will also be improved in the new lift, with instructions and buttons to be written in braille. In addition, a camera will be installed, along with an audible message to announce what level the lift is on.

While the major upgrade is taking place, access to Level 0 of the library will be impacted for some members of the public. To address this change in access, the library’s lagoon-side entrance will be open until 5pm from Monday to Friday and until 4pm on Saturday.

Library staff will be available at all times to assist members of the public while the upgrade works are taking place.

Council apologises for any inconvenience.

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

Our streets came alive with the sights sounds and flavours of our diverse community as Council again hosted the Fusion multicultural festival on

October 17. In troubled times, Fusion15

is an important celebration of the contributions that community members from around the globe have made to our economy, city and quality of life; and a demonstration of the enduring friendships that are the bedrock of Wagga as a truly special place to live.

The age range of attendees was another feature of the festival. The young and

not-so-young queued at food stalls, lounged on the lawns of the Victory Memorial Gardens enjoying an eclectic range of acts, and sampled the many other attractions of the evening.

With the doom and gloom trumpeted by the media – crime, drugs and terror implanted in our minds at every turn – it would be easy to indulge in the negative blame game with generalisations about

religions, race or even age. Instead the festival

reminded me that the answers to our problems lie in the strength and unity of our community, not the discord and division that leaks on to the pages of our newspapers and television screens.

As a Councillor I am privileged to see the work that council and our community, all races and creeds, are doing to ensure

there are paths for young people to participate and thrive in our community.

I am equally energised by the contributions those young people also make to our community on a daily basis.

We face many challenges in these troubled times. Some great, some small, but I am optimistic. The answers lie in the respect and strength of unity demonstrated in our community.

Many hands and many minds from diverse backgrounds and perspectives working together to create opportunity and a place to belong.

Our commitment, unity and diversity will guide us to the path we need to walk together.

Did you miss out on being part of the random phone sample for Council’s Community Survey?

You can still have your say and share your thoughts online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/communitysurvey.

Council is calling on the community to take the time to complete the survey, as the responses play an important role in informing Council’s

planning framework, how resources are allocated and setting future service levels.

“The Community Survey is an important tool in measuring Council’s performance as well as how we have performed as a community against the priorities identified in the Community Strategic Plan – Ruby & Oliver,” General Manager Alan Eldridge said.

Ms Dayanand was nominated by the Murrumbidgee Regional Food Group for the Food Surveillance Champion Award – Individual.

A number of nominations were received, but Ms Dayanand was selected by the judging panel for her “leadership and commitment

“I would like to thank the Environmental Health team at Council for their great efforts and continued support.”

Development consent is required to operate a boarding house. In recent times Council has received complaints that there are boarding houses in the city operating in dwellings without consent. The adorable pair can be adopted for $191.70 each from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter. This fee includes microchipping, lifetime registration, first vaccination, desexing and worming.

If you would like to meet Tom, Toby or any other animals, come down to the shelter from Monday to Saturday

Give your place a tidy up in time for summer with free entry to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) on Saturday 14 November.

Free Tip Day gives all Wagga Wagga residents the chance to dispose of their general domestic waste at no cost at GWMC, which will be open from 7am to 4.30pm.

Council’s Director Infrastructure

Services Heinz Kausche said there will be no charge for everything from garden waste to mixed recyclables and general household waste.

“Christmas is just around the corner, so Free Tip Day is a great opportunity to tidy up and get ready for summer entertaining,” Mr Kausche said.

“The free days complement our normal service that, as a result of

increased recycling capability within the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, includes more materials that can be disposed of for free every day.”

Televisions, computers and computer equipment can be disposed of for free, not just on Free Tip Day, but every day that the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre is open, as part of the

National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. This offer is available to householders and small businesses only.

“You can also dispose of polystyrene for free all year round at GWMC,” Mr Kausche said.

“Council can reprocess it on-site for reuse into a range of recycled products.”

Special wastes such as tyres,

builders waste, refrigerative items, mattresses and gas bottles are not included in the free disposal day and will be charged as per normal fees and charges. Free disposal is limited to cars, vans, utes and single axle trailers only.

High risk plane trees removed from street

The first stage of upgrade works at Johnston Street has been completed, with the high risk plane trees removed this week.

Council’s Street Tree Audit outlined the trees had the potential for large limb failure and once removal works were under way, a number of the trunks were found to be mostly hollow from decay.

A risk factor score of under 10,000 is considered very high risk and an independent arborist’s assessment found the older trees had scores of between 200 to 800.

From 28 October,

Essential Energy vegetation contractors removed the canopies of the trees on the north side of Johnston Street between Trail and Simmons, with Council contractors then able to complete the removal works ahead of schedule.

The next stage of the project will be the removal of the existing kerb to allow for it to be reconstructed.

The street trees will then be replaced with Chinese Elms, a medium-sized tree that will grow near to the height of the power lines but will not grow into them.

HOLLOW: After the canopies of the plane trees on the north side of Johnston Street were pruned (bottom), contractors found a number of the trunks were hollow from decay (above, below).
