There is no disputing the fact that more and more people are accessing the web from mobile devices, and the pace is accelerating. In this report we score and rate the mobile web presence of the Fortune 500. Our findings reveal that corporations are woefully unprepared for this inevitable shift. From our analysis we also identify common pitfalls and draw conclusions regarding the opportunities and implications of the mobile trend.

Imagine if 70% of the Fortune 500 had no corporate web site and only

10% had a corporate careers section on the web. That is what it was like in 1995. Today, nearly 90% of the Fortune 500 do not have a corporate career site optimized for the mobile web. That is astounding, particularly with the amount of data telling us that the mobile web is not only the future, it is already the present. When you look at the statistics there is no question that the use of smart phones and mobile devices to access the web is significantly on the rise. Here is a snapshot of some

relevant facts that were recently assembled and published by HRExaminer:

• Every economically viable human being on the planet owns a mobile device. (TomiAhonen)

• 73% of Americans use their mobile devices to text and take pictures, 44% to access the Internet, and 38% to send/receive email. (Pew Internet & American Life Project)

• Half of all American adults use a smartphone (Pew)

• By the end of this year, there could be more smartphones on the planet than humans, and by 2016 there could be 10 billion smartphones. Thatʼs 1.4 mobile devices per capita.(Mashable)

• 91% of all U.S. citizens have their mobile device within reach 24/7. Mobile devices replace wristwatches and alarm clocks. (Fiddlefly)

• Half of all adult cell owners (51%) had used their phone at least once to get information they needed right away. (Pew)

• The growth of the iPhone is 10 times faster than the growth of America Online. (Nielsen)

After reading this report you will be able to identify where you rank among the Fortune 500 and clearly see the actions to take in order to improve.

• In the 25-34 age range smartphone ownership is 62%. (Nielson)

• In Q3, 2011, smartphone sales reached 59% of handsets. (NPD Group)

• 70% of all mobile searches result in action within 1 hour. (Mobile Marketer)

• It takes 26 hours for the average person to report a lost wallet. It takes 68 minutes for them to report a lost phone. (Wired)

• 50% of all cell phone owners have an app on their phone. (Pew)

There is plenty more data on all things mobile at mobiThinking.com. But one of the most compelling findings we have seen to date comes from a study conducted by Morgan Stanley. Their analysts believe that, based on the current rate of change and adoption, the mobile web will be bigger than desktop Internet use by 2015.

This shift is inevitable.

The purpose of this report is twofold. First to highlight the overall readiness of corporations related to the mobile trend. We think the Fortune 500 is a pretty good indication of the rest of the population. The second is to create a scoring and rating methodology that will allow companies to rate themselves and see how they compare. After reading this report you will be able to identify where you rank among the Fortune 500 and clearly see the actions to take in order to improve.

Our approach was very straightforward. We visited the websites of the Fortune 500 using an iPhone and recorded the answers to four simple questions.

1. Is the corporate website optimized when accessed by a mobile device?

2. If yes, is there a careers link available?

3. Is there a mobile optimized careers section?

4. If yes, is there a mobile optimized apply process?

We followed a common sense approach where the first step was to search the company name on Google and then click the link to the main corporate site. If it was mobile optimized we looked for a link to jobs or careers. If it was not optimized, or there was no link, we conducted a new search for the company name and the keyword “careers.” If the career section was optimized, we went through the apply process as far as we could go without leaving the device.

In order to be as thorough as possible, we cross-referenced our findings with some recent research conducted by CareerXroads. We double-checked each career section they had found to be mobile friendly and applied our criteria. This process resulted in the identification of approximately 15 additional companies with optimized career sections.

We also searched the iTunes store to determine if the company had deployed any downloadable native apps. We looked for apps that are designed for customers or consumers, as well as apps designed specifically for jobs and careers.

In order to remain very objective, when conducting this research we did not attempt to evaluate aesthetics, features, functions or overall usability. We simply recorded a yes or no for each of the six criteria.

Methodology

Criteria & DefinitionsWhen evaluating the mobile presence of the Fortune 500 we used the following definitions to determine if each company met our criteria:

Native Consumer App – If either an iPhone or iPad app was found in the iTunes store, credit was given. We know there is also an Android store, but we assumed if a company were to develop a mobile app, they would make a version for iOS.

Mobile Optimized Corporate Site – When landing at the home page of the corporate website, the content must be displayed in a format that is appropriately sized to the screen of the device.

Careers Link – This criterion only applied to those companies with a mobile optimized corporate site and it was met if there was a careers or jobs link anywhere on the site.

Mobile Optimized Career Section – When landing at the careers section, the content must be displayed in a format that is appropriately sized to the screen of the device. The optimized portion of the career section must include searching and browsing job opportunities.

Mobile Optimized Apply Process – This criterion is only applicable to companies with a mobile optimized career sections and was met if the apply process for a job could be completed in its entirely from the mobile device.

Native Careers App – If either an iPhone or iPad app was found in the iTunes store specifically for careers or jobs, credit was given. Credit was also granted if there was a careers link in a consumer app.

Methodology

Scoring MethodologyFor each of the six criteria we applied a numeric value ranging from -1 to +1 based on the potential impact to the user. If there is a negative impact such as a bad experience on a non-optimized career section, we applied minus one. We applied zero if the impact was neutral, such as the lack of native apps, or if the criteria became non applicable. For example, if there were no evidence of a mobile optimized corporate site, the career link criteria would not apply. We also felt that the lack of a native consumer or careers app was not necessarily a negative to the user, since they would likely make the first visit to the mobile web site using a browser. The following table describes how we applied the scoring:

After applying the scores to each of the criteria we calculated a Corporate Mobile Readiness Index score (CMRi) simply by adding the values together. Based on this approach, the lowest possible CMRi score is -2 for companies that have absolutely no mobile presence, and the highest is +6 for companies meeting all six criteria.

Findings

If the Fortune 500 is any indication, our research revealed that the corporate world is woefully under prepared for the shift to the mobile web. Here is how the Fortune 500 stack up to our criteria:

• 255 have native mobile consumer apps• 141 have a mobile optimized corporate site• Of the 141, only 23 have a link to careers or jobs• 65 have a mobile optimized career section• Of the 65, only 11 have a mobile optimized

apply process• 7 have a native mobile app for careers or jobs• Only 1 company meets all six criteria (McDonaldʼs)

Description

To score a 4 or higher a company would need to have a mobile optimized corporate site, and a mobile optimized career section. There would also need to be a careers link on the corporate site, and a mobile optimized apply process. Or if one of those elements were missing, both types of native apps need to be present. We believe these criteria are the minimum to be considered a front-runner.

All of the early stage companies have optimized both the corporate site and career section and have some pretty good continuity. 6 of the 11 have a careers link on the Corp site that leads to an optimized job site. The other 5 have a mobile optimized apply process.

0 - 2Treading Water 139

A score of 0-2 is indicative of a company that is focused more on one side or the other and lack continuity. 64 have optimized corporate sites, only 16 have a careers link. All 16 careers links lead to a non-optimized career site. It seems companies in this group are just trying to keep their head above water.

-1Toe in the Water 142

Companies at this level will only have a consumer app, or one of the two web sites optimized. It seems they are only dipping a toe in the water to see if there is traction.

-2 Off the Radar 207 This group has none of the above and it appears as though the mobile trend is

not even on their radar.

Ratings We sorted the companies based on the CMRi score and studied the data to see what the differences were between higher and lower scores. We came up with five groups and developed the following ratings; Front Runner, Early Stage, Treading Water, Toe in the Water, and Off the Radar. The table below indicates the number of Fortune 500 comanies in each group along with a full description of the rating.

Findings

Page 10: Corporate Mobile Readiness Report

ExamplesIf you visit a few career sections from your mobile phone, you will see that the difference between an optimized and non-optimized experience is stark. Even though a traditional web page will render on the phone, you need to constantly resize the screen in order to read the text, select data from menus, and find the right button to push. In an optimized environment the content fits your screen, itʼs easy to read, with large buttons so that a quick push of the thumb is all you need to navigate.

Findings

It was no surprise that the Fortune 500 is behind in mobile readiness, but it was a little unexpected to see which companies were in the front and back of the pack. We would have thought high tech companies like Cisco and Apple to lead, but instead we found companies like Tyson Foods and Humana offering fully optimized careers sites with a completely mobile apply process.

While these images give you a basic idea, we encourage you to visit and attempt to navigate a few sites to gain a full appreciation.

General ObservationsAs we analyzed the data to develop our ratings, there were several additional observations that we felt were noteworthy.

1. Silos – It is clear that the people who are responsible for the mobile corporate site are not coordinating with the people in HR who are responsible for the career section. Of the 141 companies with an optimized corporate site, only about 20% have an optimized careers section, and only 16% have a link between them. Of the 64 companies with a mobile optimized career section, only 48% have an optimized corporate site. It is reminiscent of the mid '90s when HR had to battle to get a careers link on the home page of the corporate web site.

2. Mobile Apply Process – There are only 11 companies with the ability to apply for a job completely on the mobile device. This indicates that it is either very hard to do in a mobile optimized way, or that companies believe job seekers would rather apply on a desktop. We think it is a little of both. When we explored the mobile apply process on the McDonaldʼs site, it seemed a little daunting. After thumbing in the basic name, address, email address, we got the next page and we were informed we were only 13% done. Had we not been conducting research, we may have never made it beyond that point. But the next few pages were education and work history, and most of those fields were optional. In the end it was not necessarily that painful. Kudos to McDonaldʼs for going all the way.

3. Native apps – While more than half of the Fortune 500 are experimenting with native apps for customers and consumers, very few have apps for jobs or careers. It is possible that companies do not believe job seekers would use a careers app due to the nature

Of the 141 companies with an

about 20% have an optimized

careers section.

Findings

of a job search. Would a job seeker realistically download a native app for every company from which they are pursuing employment opportunities? Probably not. Unless the app was developed for more than just careers. For example, McDonaldʼs took a more integrated approach and developed an app that serves both the consumer and job seeker. In addition to being able to find restaurants and look up nutrition information, you can also search and apply to jobs.

4. Talent Communities - We noticed that of the companies with mobile optimized career sections, most offered the ability to join a talent community rather than apply for a job. It is in line with the mentality that it would be too hard for a job seeker to actually apply for a job on the mobile device. The Talent Community registration process requires you to drop off just enough information so that the employer can send you new job listings via email. It is really nothing more than a watered down version of job agents where job seekers can elect to be notified when new vacancies are posted based on search criteria. The problem with this is that when people are invited to join a community there is an expectation of something more. This is actually a little less.

Pitfalls & Lessons LearnedAs we followed our methodology of searching for the corporate site and navigating to the careers section, we identified several pitfalls to be aware of as you address the mobile web for your company.

1. Use of Flash – There were a few sites that used Flash on the home page of the career section showing a map of the world allowing the user to select a geographic region to start their job search. Even though the main page was not mobile optimized, we still attempted to get all the way to the job search page to be sure. On these sites, we could not get past the main career page to view any jobs because flash is not available on the iPhone.

General Observations

Four Big Mistakes

1. Use of Flash on web pages cannot be viewed on iPhones.

2. Re-direct to Corp mSite prevents navigation to careers section.

3. No Careers Link on Corp mSite is a lost opportunity.

4. No mobile apply forces users to go back to a desktop.

Page 13: Corporate Mobile Readiness Report

Corporate Mobile Readiness Report | © 2012 iMomentous All rights reserved 12

2. Absolute Redirect – Most companies set up their web site so that mobile devices are detected and the user is redirected to the mobile optimized site. In several cases the redirect was absolute and no matter what page you hit on the domain or sub-domain you are automatically redirected to the mobile corporate site. This creates a problem when there is no careers link on the mobile optimized corporate site and we could not get to the careers section at all from the mobile device. Some of them had a link to navigate back to the full site, but all that does is send the user to a non-optimized site. The best practice is when the user is prompted beforehand as to which site they would like to land on; the full site, or the mobile site.

3. No Redirect – There were several cases where mobile optimized sites are available, but there is no redirect. This is problematic for several reasons. Mobile users will not hunt for the mobile site. If the main site does not redirect, it is almost like it does not exist. Of the 65 companies with mobile optimized career sections, more than two thirds have no redirect. When searching the company name and keyword “careers,” we found the mobile optimized link was sometimes second or third on the list. It appears that most non-optimized corporate sites use “Careers” as the page title, and “Jobs” is more frequently used for the mobile site. It is very possible that we missed a few because of this problem.

4. Limited Use – In some cases mobile optimized career sites were set up for just one type of position. The mentality is that only certain types of people would be using mobile devices for job searching. But even if that were true, it creates problems for the user who clicks the wrong link. The targeted user could end up on the main non-optimized site, and the user you did not expect to use mobile could end up seeing a limited set of job opportunities.

Of the 65 companies with mobile optimized career sections, more than two thirds have no redirect.

FindingsPitfalls & Lessons Learned

Page 14: Corporate Mobile Readiness Report

5. Careers Link - We believe it is important to have a careers link on the optimized corporate web site. We even deducted a point in the scoring if it was not there. But this is a “damned if you do, damned if you donʼt “ situation. If you donʼt have it there, users will be alienated and likely never make it to your non-optimized career section. If you do have the link, and it leads the user from an optimized site to a non-optimized experience, it can leave a bigger negative impact. It could be argued that it is better to have nothing optimized than to only be partially optimized.

6. No Mobile Apply - Most mobile career sites force the user to send themselves a link to the job via email to complete the apply process. We also found messaging from companies indicating it would be better to apply for jobs from a desktop computer. While this at least gives an explanation, it is still frustrating to the user who wants to complete the transaction on the mobile device. It would be very similar to instruct a job seeker who found your online career site that it would be better to submit a resume by Fax. There is a growing population of talent for whom a desktop computer may only be available in a public library. For many people, particularly in emerging markets, the smartphone is the only device used for web access and email.

Findings Pitfalls & Lessons Learned

Page 15: Corporate Mobile Readiness Report

While the results of this research illustrate a major gap between corporate

readiness and the trend toward the mobile web, it was really not all that surprising. It took more than 10 years for the shift to the world wide web to take place, this change is happening twice as fast. It is clear that the major corporations cannot keep up with the pace of this technology. Most companies are still trying to figure out how to leverage the social media explosion not to mention cloud computing. But it is evident that these advances in technology are all intertwined. Mobile will become the preferred platform to access our social channels and the cloud will enable us to be free from the desktop. Companies should be taking an integrated approach to develop strategies to embrace all three trends.

During the process of compiling this report, there are two very distinct opportunities that we believe will differentiate the wheat from the chaff.

Conclusions

1. Convergence of Brands – For the last ten years we have seen an infusion of marketing and brand consciousness enter the realm of talent acquisition. During the process of developing employer brands, companies have made attempts to connect it with their consumer brand. But in the end you still had two different brands. The shift to mobile is creating a convergence where there no longer needs to be a divide between the two. When building native apps, the goal is to create an engaging experience for the user and get them to come back often. When you browse the iTunes store and see all of the native apps the Fortune 500 have created, you wonder why no one (except for McDonaldʼs) has thought about creating a connection to careers. It is a lost opportunity.

Page 16: Corporate Mobile Readiness Report

Conclusions

2. Experience vs. Interface – Companies should realize that mobile is very different than the web. Based on the findings, it is clear that mobile technology is being treated like an interface problem, not a major transformation. The primary goal is to make all existing systems and content accessible from a mobile device. But this is yet another lost opportunity. The shift to mobile is as significant a change as the transition from client/server to the web in the 1990s. Mobile devices are being used anytime, anywhere. They are with us 24/7 with built in GPS. They are used for games, music, video, texting, email, dieting, shopping and soon will be the primary device to access any information on the web. The opportunity is to create a new experience for the mobile user, one that is engaging, intuitive, and contextual.

The opportunity is to stop thinking Web, and start thinking Mobile!

The opportunity is to stop thinking Web, and start thinking Mobile!
