Rain needed to make canoe race a quick one this year: organizersCORNWALL, Ontario – If we don’t get some

rain or snow leading up to the 44th edition of the Raisin River Canoe Race, things could be pretty slow on the big day.

While a major winter storm was brewing last week, the race is still nearly two weeks away on April 10.

“It could be a slow race…it could also mean we move the starting of the race down a little bit – downstream,” said co-organizer Lissa Deslandes, regulations officer with the Raisin Region Conservation Area. “We’re still kind of hoping for some precipitation.”

Phil Barnes, the other co-organizer of the race, said the April 10 date was set in hopes of taking advantage of a typical spring melt.

“Historically, April 10 would be the best day to have the race, that’s usually when the water peaks,” he said. “The Raisin [River] is flashy though, so a good spring rain or two the week before, and the water levels will come back.”

The race is held every spring. Paddlers start at St. Andrew’s West and complete the 30-km trek through Martintown and down to Williamstown. The race date is usually timed to coincide with the peak flows of the spring run-off - the swift current makes paddling all the

more easier.Last year’s event wasn’t a particularly high

flow, but that didn’t stop the participants from coming out in near-record numbers - and the fans.

“Martintown was amazing last year,” said Deslandes. “There was a real fair-like atmos-phere with spectators lined up near the old mill, waiting for the canoers to ‘shoot-the-dam’.

“The participants really enjoy that. They told us the fans were cheering all around the course and that really added to their day.”

The canoe race, has expanded significantly over the years, and now offers multiple categor-ies from recreation to pro-class. Canoes and Kayaks are welcome to join. The event, which is produced by the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) is sponsored this year by Emard Brothers Lumber. Cornwall’s Metro store to close in eight weeksTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall is losing one of its grocery stores.

It was announced to staff Monday that Metro, located on Vincent Massey Drive, will be shuttered in eight weeks, said sources.

Mark Bernhardt, spokesperson for the com-pany, confirmed the news and said the move was based on economics.

“The reason for the closure is that the store was not able to meet sales targets in this mar-ket,” he said. “The decision was prompted also by the fact that the lease was expiring.”

The decision means nearly 70 people will be out of a job. Some 17 full-time people are employed at the Metro in Cornwall.

“We are not aware of any future uses for the store locations, and that is all the information we have available at this time,” added Bernhardt.

Rumours have run rampant in recent weeks concerning the future of the store.

Two weeks ago Seaway News reached out to Metro concerning a potential closure, but at that time spokespeople indicated they were not prepared to discuss rumours.

The store has undergone a number of differ-ent brands over the years, including A&P, Loeb and Super C to name a few.

CORNWALL, Ontario – It could be this sum-mer before an aged church in Cornwall is open again for services.

Nativity Co-Cathedral in Cornwall is going to require extensive reinforcement of its choir loft before the facility can be safely opened to the public, the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall con-firmed Thursday.

The co-cathedral was closed to public servi-ces before Christmas when it was found that the choir loft may require repair work.

“The engineering report has now been gen-erated and indicates that the choir loft does indeed require structural reinforcement,” the

diocese said in a statement.Pierre Aube, the diocese’s administrator, said

in an interview a request for proposal will likely be issued next month, and contractors can then submit their plans (and costs) to complete the repair work.

Aube estimated it could take as long as two months, once work begins, to complete repairs.

“They’re going to require some major work here,” he said. “We want to make absolutely sure this thing is absolutely safe.

“We need to shore it up.”Once the required corrective measures are

implemented, the Co-Cathedral will reopen. In the meantime, the parishioners of Nativity con-tinue to attend Mass at St.-Félix-de-Valois and Sainte-Croix.

St. John Ambulance could close in CornwallTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall is in danger of losing its St. John Ambulance service.

Officials with the charity that provide first-aid responders at local fairs and sporting events told Seaway News Tuesday the branch could close before the end of the year if more revenue isn’t found.

“The next three to six months are critical,” said Michele Brunette, board chair for the local St. John branch, which has its office on Sydney Street in Cornwall. “It’s quite upsetting because the volunteer groups are in such a good place right now.”

Decision-makers with the agency will sit down with Cornwall people in June to go over the books, and again three months later to

determine in the local branch can remain viable.In that time Brunette said a business plan is

being put in place to augment revenue streams and increase fundraising activities.

There are about 20 first-aiders who attend community events through St. John Ambulance, and are ready to help in the event of an emer-gency. There are also 10 therapy dog teams that visit shut-ins in the area through St. John.

Brunette said the agency is often hamstrung because it’s a charity that must operate a busi-ness component to stay viable. Some organizers of community events that employ the St. John Ambulance Service provide donations – but it’s not always enough.

“Unfortunately some organizers will give a little bit, but we still end up paying some funds from our own pockets. And some won’t give us

anything,” she said. “We spend money in order to help them. So we’re hoping people will rec-ognize that and help us to recover our costs. We’re not in the business of making money…but people have to help us for what it costs to put the ambulance on the road and put uni-forms on the back of volunteers and pay for equipment.”

St. John’s also faces increased competition for the first-aid instructions it provides to local residents.

“The bottom line is always important so companies will go for the best bang for their buck,” she said. “They want the class to be as short and concise as possible and they want to satisfy their requirements. St. John Ambulance is a huge brand. We’ve built our reputation on the quality of our instructors.

“There’s a cost associated with that. It costs a lot of money to keep the high quality. It’s the same for everybody. So it’s very difficult for us to

compete price-wise with the courses and short-en our classes.”

The local branch of St. John recently cele-brated its 75th anniversary.

Dans son plus récent texte, elle raconte donc l’histoire de Jacob qui arrive à l’école avec une paire de bobettes coincées dans la jambe de son pantalon. Il se dépêche à les cacher sous un banc, mais quelqu’un les trouve et en profite pour faire rire les autres.

L’auteure y raconte l’histoire avec quatre points de vue. Mystères, indices, illustrations complémentaires au texte, malgré ces défis, son jeune public saisi très bien son histoire, admet-elle impressionnée.

Elle estime que ce travail pour comprendre l’histoire développement des lecteurs plus actifs.

Deux autres ouvragesAu cours des prochaines semaines, elle lan-

cera aussi deux autres livres illustrés. D’abord

Manchots au chaud, illustré par Oussama Mezher, inspiré d’une histoire vraie.

Il y a quelques années, un paquebot, un pétrolier, s’est échoué près des côtes de la Nouvelle-Zélande. Des manchots se sont ret-rouvés couverts de pétrole. Des gens s’étaient mobilisés pour confectionner des chandails sans manche, question que les manchots ne se lavent pas le plumage, s’empoisonnant du même coup. «J’ai écrit un album, une histoire fictive à partir de cela», précise l’auteure.

Notre diversité, une richesse à partager!Lors de la semaine du 7 au 11 mars 2016, l’école Rose des

Vents soulignait la semaine de la francophonie.Le but de cette semaine était de célébrer notre amour de

la langue et de la culture française. Cette année, la semaine de la francophonie avait comme thème: ¨Notre diversité, une richesse à partager!¨.

À chaque jour, la radio scolaire diffusait une chanson différente. Aussi, les élèves ont expérimenté différents défis. Cette année, on a aussi écouté une capsule vidéo par jour. Cette capsule a comme objectif de nous faire réaliser que l’on parle parfois en utilisant des expressions erronées. Alors, peut-être qu’un des objectifs était de nous corriger.

Lundi, on a écouté la chanson ¨Le temps s’arrête¨ par Swing, le défi était la phrase malade et la capsule était ¨C’est mon¨. Mardi, la chanson était ¨Un coup sur mon coeur¨ par Marc Dupré, le défi était de dessiner l’expression: ¨Attache ta tuque¨ et la capsule était ̈ Ça regarde comme¨. Mercredi, on a diffusé la chanson ¨Papaoutai¨ par Stromae, il y avait le concours de vire langue dans les classes et la capsule du jour était ¨Je cherche pour¨.

En passant, saviez-vous ce qu’est un vire langue? C’est une phrase de mots créée dans un but de faire rire et qui est souvent difficile à prononcer. Comme par exemple: Un pâtissier qui pâtissait chez tapissier qui tapissait demanda un jour au tapissier qui tapissait ; vaut il mieux pâtisser chez un tapissier qui tapisse ou tapisser chez un pâtissier qui pâtisse?

Lors du jeudi, la chanson entendue était ¨Je suis le vent¨ par Marie-Mai, c’était la journée de la demi-finale du concours de vire langue pour déterminer les deux finalistes par niveau et la capsule était ¨Je sais¨. Lors du vendredi, on a écouté la chanson ¨Pur laine et colorée¨ par l’Écho d’un

Magali Nichol et Sophia Dorie, 6e année peuple et c’était enfin la finale du concours de vire langue. Cette finale s’est déroulée au gymnase et la capsule était ¨Sur samedi¨.

Pour le concours de vire langue, les élèves ont été divisés en deux équipes chacune des équipes avait un élève de chaque niveau de la 1ère à la 6e année et les deux élèves du même niveau devaient s’affronter un contre l’autre. À la fin de la compétition, les deux équipes avaient un pointage égal. On remercie Mme Julie Brunet et Mme Angel Piette pour les belles activités!

Try these chops out the next time you have a hankering for something delectable.

Ingredients:1 cup of beer - your favourite.2 tablespoons brown sugar2 teaspoons ginger root grated

4 bone-in pork chops about ¾-inch thick ¼ cup soy saucePlace chops in a self-sealing plastic bag; add

remaining ingredients and seal bag. Gently massage bag to evenly distribute marinade ingredients. Refrigerate 4-24 hours. Prepare medium-hot coals in kettle-style grill. Remove chops from marinade and discard marinade; place on grill directly over coals, cover grill and grill for 10 minutes, turning once.

Council compensation continues to be a thorn for someTOdd [email protected]

Word around the municipal campfire is the election issue that prompted the most change around the council table during the 2014 cam-paign is continuing to make noise at city hall.

Salaries. Salaries. Salaries.There is still grumbling in some circles that

members of city council are not paid enough for the work/time they must put into the job.

You’ll remember it was the previous city council that voted itself a massive pay raise that would have seen the mayor pull in $75,000 year (instead of less than $60,000) and councillors would have ballooned to $25,000 (they get just shy of $16,000 now).

Expense accounts were also included.Voters were angry, and when many run-

ning for office in 2014 said they would reverse the decision about half of city council was replaced with new faces.

But some of those new faces (and others who have been around for a while) are still angling for a raise and there is plenty of behind-the-scenes whispers about this sub-ject - including some who complained the most about the raise approved nearly two years ago.

The problem, for those who want more money, will be how to get a raise on the books without upsetting an electorate that was clearly having none of it just 16 months ago.

The Municipal Act, I’m told, dictates that a municipal council must review compensation at least once every four years. So it’s likely that this iteration of city council will have to go through the motions before the next munici-pal election.

How will it vote? The more I hear from sources around the council table, the more I am convinced there will be a serious push to get more money out of taxpayers for members of city council.

I’ve opined in the past that everyone deserves a raise…even city councillors. The problem, as it almost always is, boils down to optics. The 2014 raise was too much, too soon, and too close to an election to gain any real traction.

It says here if council hadn’t gone for such a giant-sized raise, which and I and others could have supported, many of the current members would be making more than they do right now.

It was too easy for council candidates to

play off the anger of voters demanding change to turn the raise into an election issue that resulted in significant change.

If I was a city councillor I would propose that council make it permanent that compen-sation be discussed at the start of the third year of its four-year mandate – pretty much dead centre of its term.

Such a scenario is far enough away from election dates to keep politicking to a min-imum, while also fulfilling the requirements of the Municipal Act and being fair to all involved.

Former mayor Bob Kilger clearly hit the mark when he suggested there’s “never a good time” to discuss the compensation paid out to politicians. Critics will criticize, regardless of the date on the calendar.

But maybe there’s a date that makes the issue easier for everyone.

EXPENSES vS. TAX BREAKSOf the $16,000 (or so) that councillors rake

in, one-third of it is tax free. One has to ask, why?

The suggestion is that the tax-free com-ponent is in place to mitigate the expenses that city councillors can wrack up. MPs and MPPs get the same deal.

But it begs the question...why do some of these same politicians, including council members here in Fun City, have expense accounts?

That expense account is in place, appar-ently, to cover PR costs and miscellaneous fees for everything from golf tournaments to chamber of commerce dinners and associa-tion dues.

Why doesn’t the tax-free component of their salary cover those costs, as it is designed to?

As one member of council suggested to me this week: “We’re double-dipping. It’s legal…but we’re double-dipping.”

The way to fix this is simple – do away with the expense account. Council is likely to vote itself another raise, so when that takes place I say the expense account can be dropped.

These ‘events’ that council members attend are often labelled as something one is expected to go to as an elected official. But I bet taxpayers wouldn’t care a fig if Councillor ‘X’ attended the chamber awards, hospital golf tournament or stayed at home to watch the hockey game.

When councillors attend these events it’s about being seen…which is another form of

campaigning. And taxpayers shouldn’t be covering those

bills.

APOLOGY NEEDED At the risk of using a line straight out of the

blogosphere, city council owes an apology to a group of people in the gallery at city hall Tuesday night.

The individuals were representing the Sun Rise and Shine Daycare, an agency looking for the municipal rubber stamp in its plan to add more subsidized daycare spots to its allotment.

And they deserved better than the finger-pointing and innuendo offered Tuesday night.

When the issue was finally resolved and council voted to allow the daycare’s request, Sun Rise and Shine’s administrator was reduced to tears of relief.

Councillors need to remember that not everyone invested in a council agenda is watching at home – some are in the gallery. And in many cases the decision council must consider impacts the lives and bottom lines for individuals.

From the media desk it appeared as though council forgot that, and its debate became personal in many respects, with councillors openly questioning the validity of reports, and disrespectful banter was peppered with anger

and emotion directed at a colleague.Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy left his role as

chair a couple of times to argue in favour of the move.

“Cool down, Les,” Coun. Andre Rivette offered – not exactly proper decorum when addressing the mayor during a meeting.

And Coun. Bernadette Clement even sug-gested council wasn’t getting the full story on the issue, opining that important facts were missing from an administrative report.

And to top it all off, it appears as though their debate wasn’t grounded in the facts. Councillors opposed to the increased number of subsidized daycare spots being requested by Sun Rise and Shine Daycare were hung up on the fact that there are 261 vacancies among similar agencies in Cornwall.

They wanted to know why more spots were being added when not all of them are full.

What they didn’t know, apparently, is the vacancies are mostly for older children, like pre-schoolers. Sun Rise and Shine Daycare wants the increased number of spots, in part, to help offset the number of infant spaces mis-sing in the city – there are no vacancies for babies.

I’m all for passionate debate at city hall – it makes my job easier. But not at the cost of a poor woman’s sanity.

costs associated with ash borer disease due to inappropriate follow-ups!

First of all it has been proven that this disease occurred on wooden containers that came from the orient!

The federal government that allowed these containers come into Canada, therefore the fed-eral government should pay for this under the Canada shipping act!.

Municipalities are wrongly paying for this and

it will only increase to ineffective and the greed of attempt to reclaim the cut wood for lumber uses. It can NOT and must not continue to lay in open air dump sites.

The federal government should be sued by association of municipalities for 100% reimburse-ments all of costs associated with this major on going hazard!

Let us demand immediate action! This problem has become a major environ-

A friend who made the list of six-figure wage earners complained that it isn’t fair to continue using $100,000 as the benchmark for public dis-closure and the eye-rolling that it provokes.

He pointed out, and rightly so, when inflation is factored in the $100,000 bar set by the Mike Harris government so long ago has become more like $140,000.

Ah yes.But, and Preem Kathy agrees, for most work-

ing stiffs earning a paycheque in the cut-throat, take no prisoners private sector these days, and trying to keep the wolf from the door, $100,000 continues to be a lot of money. A heck of a lot of money. Especially in an income challenged com-munity where the $20-an-hour non-public job is considered pretty good. This is when the “but it is cheaper to live here” line is used as an eco-nomic cushion that is somehow expected to make lower income earners feel better.

What the Sunshine List exposes is the grow-ing income gap between the upper middle class and those slipping farther down the middle class food chain, many of whom are falling farther behind the Sunshine List holdovers because of that seventh wonder of the world called com-pounding increases.

It comes down to simple math. Two per cent of $100,000 is a lot more than 2% of $40,000. Now compound that 10 or 15 years.

FROM THE ARCHIVES A strong argument could be made that Cornwall has had two his-toric municipal elections. One elected the city’s youngest mayor, Ed Lumley. The other saw the defeat of the city’s longest serving mayor, Aaron Horovitz.

Before he lost to Emile Menard on Dec. 3, 1956, the Romanian-born Horovitz, one of the first Jewish mayors in Canada, had held the pos-ition for 18 years. He wore the unbeatable label.

It was the first election for the “new” Cornwall. Annexation of a large part of Cornwall Township became official on Jan. 1, 1957. Menard had served as township reeve.

It was a hotly contested election with Horovitz winning in the “old” city, while Menard was strong in the township.

A record 65% of eligible voters cast ballots thanks to a huge turnout in Cornwall Township. In one Ward Six poll, west of Brookdale Avenue, 500 voters of the 520 registered cast their bal-lots. Menard scored huge margins of victory in the region east of Marlborough Street.

Menard, an east Cornwall businessman, was a veteran township politician who became reeve in 1954 when he defeated Dr. Elzear Emard.

In a strange twist of fate, both men were dead within a year of the election. Horovitz died of a heart attack on May 13. Menard died on Aug. 12 after falling in his home. He was suc-ceeded by Ald. L. G. (Archie) Lavigne.

Cornwall Royals won the Memorial Cup and goalie Richard Brodeur was named most valuable player. ... Team Canada beat the Soviet Union in the greatest hockey series ever played. ... The average annual income was $11,800. ... The Frisbee, Easy Bake Oven and Fisher Price Play Farm were popular toys. ... We watched The Benny Hill Show, The Brady Bunch and Hawaii Five-O. ... This column is about the tale of two African presidents and what their priorities are. Most African countries got rid of their colonial mas-ters in the 1959’s and 1960’s. Many of these countries are afflicted with abject poverty, lack of medical facilities and proper education. Being born in Tanzania and having spent most of my adult life in that country, I am impressed with harsh but needed steps to improve the lives of ordinary citizens. Tanzania’s new President John Magufuli – better known as a bulldozer – can teach a lot of things to free-spending African

leaders. Since assuming power, Magufuli has put a stop to wastage of public money on for-eign junkets. All over the continent, Africans are singing praises of the president who knows where his country’s priorities lie. Legislators in Kenya, a neighbor to Tanzania, spend a whop-ping amount of money on foreign and domes-tic travels. This expenditure alone is enough to buy numerous radiotherapy machines and increase by seven times the number of cancer patients that would have access to radiother-apy treatment in the country. Tanzania’s President has ordered his cabinet and civil ser-vants to restrict their travel abroad and has

even cancelled trips of delegates attending conferences in foreign countries. In Tanzania, presidents can only hold office for two terms. Magufuli has also introduced many belt-tightening measures. The president has banned government officials from sending Christmas and New Year cards paid by public funds. He cancelled Independence Day cele-brations and ordered the public money to be spent on a clean-up campaign to fight the out-break of cholera. Other money has been spent to buy beds for hospitals. Meanwhile Zimbabwe’s life-long president Robert Mugabe spent nearly $1 million on a party organized by

supporters to celebrate his 92nd birthday. This celebration was an affront to ordinary Zimbabweans and the country hit hard by drought. Mugabe is the only leader the country has known since its independence from Britain in 1960. The severe drought has left more than three million people in Zimbabwe in desperate need of food. Zimbabwe has appealed for near-ly $1.6 billion from other countries to pay for grain and food. Mugabe’s lavish birthday bash-es have become an annual pilgrimage for loyal-ists and supporters.

Soon after independence, Zimbabwe had one of Africa’s most promising economies.

City council spent nearly $50,000 on things like cell phones, public relations and food in 2015. Last year’s council expenses, detailed in a report that will be received by councillors Tuesday night, includes everything from the food bill ($5,440) to cell phone invoices ($5,657) and the breakdown of individual councillor expenses. Remuneration and honorariums are also included in the document.

Coun. Carilyne Hebert expensed the most com-pared to her city council colleagues. In addition to her $15,683 salary Hebert had $1,629 in expenses, which includes $1,080 for miscellaneous expenses

and $548 in public relations. She said much of that money comes from purchasing office supplies to attending public events and paying for tickets and other fees. She used the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce business awards as an example.

“You’re expected to participate in a lot of com-munity events and fundraisers,” she said. “My regu-lar job doesn’t permit to be able to.”

Councillors each have a budget of $2,500 a year for personal expenses.

“If I needed to really spend that kind of money it’s not a problem,” said Hebert. “We’re not highly paid.”

Coun. Mark MacDonald was next with some $1,589 in expenses last year. Much of that was

spent in the first six months of 2015, including when he spent $790 on Cornwall scrapbooks. He told this newspaper in December his plan is to hand out the books during this term.

“I took all the ones that were left,” he said at the time of the books that were produced, in conjunc-tion with Cornwall’s economic development department, and features old photographs of the city. “I’m going to use them over the next four years as souvenirs for people.”

“I’m very proud that council as a whole is very cognizant of that,” said Coun. David Murphy, who expensed $1,373 in 2015. “Often times I’m asked to represent the municipality at some function.

“We have our expense account for that

reason.”Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy hit the city up for

nearly $60,000 in 2015, which includes his $51,541 salary, a $1,920 car allowance, a $4,938 RRSP and $1,382 in expenses. He also handed out $2,443 in souvenirs.

Those on the low end of the spectrum include Coun. Denis Carr, who cost the city just $1,558 in 2015. He was appointed to council towards the end of the year following Brock Frost’s resignation.

Coun. Claude McIntosh was the biggest spend-thrift of the full-time councillors last year – he pocketed his $15,683 salary but spent just $149 on municipal expenses.

If your child was in crisis, what would you do? Where would you go? If they had an injury or were sick, the answer would be pretty straight forward. You'd go to the hospital. But what if their pain wasn't easy to understand?

My eleven year old daughter Alyssa loves animals, her family and her friends. She's a creative kid – kind, funny and well-spoken. I'm so proud of her. Her smile is contagious; but not long ago, that smile was hard to find.

“I'm a person who just has a lot of extra worries,” Alyssa says with a shrug, summing up her struggle in a clear and simple way. Unfortunately, her path to feeling better was much too complicated.

Our journey started when Alyssa was 9 years old. She experienced frequent stomach aches, headaches and nausea, her absences from school started piling up, but health tests came back clear. As time passed, she transformed from a confident girl who independently attended sleepaway camp, to a child who dreaded going to school. en things got worse. Social situations made Alyssa fearful; she became afraid to leave the house and rapidly lost weight off her already small frame. I was scared. What could be wrong?

I took time away from work to stay by Alyssa's side. I researched symptoms and brought Alyssa to numerous appointments, trying anything and everything to help her feel better. What's more, Alyssa required a definitive diagnosis before she could get the treatment she really needed, but an appointment at CHEO would require an eight-to-ten month wait. It was dark time.

An eventual connection with a caring case worker from Cornwall Community Hospital got Alyssa a tele-psychiatric appointment over Skype with a psychiatrist from CHEO, cutting her wait time from months down to three weeks. Alyssa was diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder; help was finally on its way.

Today, aer building up trust and working hard in treatment, Alyssa has more good days than before. She is back at school and has a new group of friends who support her unconditionally. ey understand that she's like everyone else, she just happens to have extra worries.

I don't regret the difficult journey Alyssa and I have travelled together as we have learned so much in the process and we are much stronger as a result; but I do believe it should be easier for parents and children suffering from mental health issues to navigate the system.

I want to help parents to get from point A to point B faster. It scares me to think that some parents won't make the connection to understand what's really wrong. I know Cornwall Community Hospital is working to make things easier, building a new Addiction and Mental Health Centre that will provide people in our community with a one stop shop to find help. But they can't do it on their own.

CCH Foundation is now fundraising to integrate addiction and mental health services in our community. With generous help from caring individuals like you, the new building is slated to open in fall, 2016. Si votre enfant vivait une situation de crise, que feriez-vous? Où iriez-vous? S'il était blessé ou malade, la réponse serait probablement plutôt simple. Vous iriez à l'hôpital. Mais si sa douleur était difficile à comprendre?

Ma fille de 11 ans, Alyssa, adore les animaux, sa famille et ses amis. Elle est créative, aimable, drôle et elle s'exprime bien. Je suis si fière d'elle. Son sourire est contagieux, mais il y a peu de temps, ce sourire est devenu difficile à percevoir.

« J'ai simplement beaucoup de préoccupations », dit Alyssa en haussant les épaules pour résumer simplement et clairement ses difficultés. Malheureusement, son parcours pour se sentir mieux était bien trop compliqué.

Notre parcours a débuté alors qu'Alyssa avait 9 ans. Elle avait souvent des maux d'estomac, de tête, des nausées, elle s'absentait de plus en plus de l'école, mais ses évaluations médicales n'indiquaient rien. Avec le temps, la fille confiante qui passait sans supervision la nuit au camp s'est transformée au point de redouter l'école. Puis la situation s'est aggravée. Les situations sociales la rendaient craintive. Elle avait peur de quitter la maison et elle a rapidement perdu du poids sur sa charpente déjà petite. J'avais peur! Que se passait-il?

J'ai pris congé du travail pour demeurer avec elle. J'ai fait des recherches sur les symptômes et j'ai accompagné Alyssa à de nombreux rendez-vous, en essayant tout ce qui était possible pour l'aider à se sentir mieux. En plus, il fallait établir un diagnostic clair avant qu'elle reçoive les traitements dont elle avait absolument besoin, mais pour un rendez-vous au CHEO, il fallait attendre de 8 à 10 mois. Ce furent des moments sombres.

En fin de compte, un chargé de cas bienveillant de l'Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall a donné à Alyssa un rendez-vous par Skype avec un psychiatre du CHEO, diminuant le temps d'atteinte de plusieurs mois à trois semaines. Alyssa a ainsi reçu un diagnostic de trouble d'anxiété généralisée. Il y avait enfin de l'aide à portée de main!

Aujourd'hui, après avoir bâti sa confiance et de grands efforts durant les traitements, Alyssa vit davantage de belles journées qu'avant. Elle est de retour à l'école et elle peut compter sur un nouveau groupe d'amis, qui l'appuie sans réserve. Ils comprennent qu'elle est comme tout le monde, mais qu'elle a davantage de préoccupations que les autres.

Je n'ai pas de regrets par rapport au parcours difficile d'Alyssa. J'ai cheminé avec elle; j'ai ainsi tant appris durant le processus, ce qui nous a rendues bien plus fortes. Cependant, je pense qu'il devrait être plus facile pour les parents et leurs enfants qui sont aux prises avec des problèmes de santé mentale de s'orienter dans le système.

Je veux aider les parents à passer plus rapidement du point A au point B. J'ai peur de penser que des parents ne pourront faire le lien afin de vraiment comprendre ce qui ne va pas. Je sais qu'à l'Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall, on fait ce qu'on peut pour simplifier les choses en construisant un nouveau centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale qui sera un guichet unique où les gens d'ici pourront obtenir de l'aide. Mais l'équipe ne peut y parvenir seule!

La Fondation de l'Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall recueille actuellement des fonds pour intégrer les services de toxicomanie et de santé mentale dans notre communauté. Grâce à l'appui généreux de personnes attentionnées comme vous, il devrait ouvrir ses portes à l'automne 2016. L’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall (HCC) travaille actuellement à un projet d’intégration d’avant-garde qui transformera la façon dont les services de santé mentale et de lutte contre les dépendances sont offerts à Cornwall, dans les Comtés unis de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry ainsi qu’à Akwesasne. Ce modèle de soins révolutionnaire sera le premier du genre dans l’Est ontarien et, une fois de plus, l’HCC sera ainsi un chef de file provincial.

Notre hôpital sera en mesure d’offrir des services de santé mentale et de lutte contre les dépendances à tous les groupes d’âge, de l’enfance à l’âge d’or, sous un seul toit. Ces problèmes sont débilitants pour les personnes touchées, tout en ayant un effet important pour la société.

Actuellement, les soins de santé mentale dans la région sanitaire de Champlain ne sont pas facilement accessibles et ils sont coûteux. Ce projet améliorera de façon importante la situation en réduisant les coûts et en répondant davantage à la demande. Le regroupement et l’intégration des services seront avantageux à bien des points de vue.

New faces added to Chamber of Commerce board

CORNWALL, Ontario - Six new board mem-bers have joined the Cornwall and District Chamber of Commerce.

Outgoing president Denis Carr made the announcement Wednesday. When the board holds its inaugural meeting a new president and executive will be chosen.

“I’m pleased to announce that the chamber’s 2016 directors have been elected and I welcome them to the board,” said Carr. “With their elec-tion, they now become an integral part of one of the oldest business associations in Ontario.”

Chamber show marks the unofficial beginnning of springCORNWALL, Ontario - It’s the event

It’s the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce annual Spring Home & Leisure Show and excitement is already growing for the

Competition heats up for Kinsmen Pizza PartyAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – If anyone has figured out a recipe for success, it’s Louis’ Pizzeria owner Steve Liolios.

The popular Cornwall eatery will be defending its crown at the 10th annual Kinsmen Pizza Party at the Best Western Parkway Inn in Cornwall on Friday (April 1). Doors open at 6 p.m.

After serving food to Cornwallites for over four decades, the 68-year-old restaurant chef doesn’t rely on a secret ingredient or cheesy gimmicks.

“It’s the way you make it,” said Liolios, who took over the First Street East pizzeria in 1984.

In 2015, Louis’ was crowned Kinsmen Pizza Party champion for the third straight year, while second place went to 2-4-1 Pizza, and Bobby’s Place took third. But the crowd had their say, too. The People’s Choice top three: Louis’ Pizzeria, Bobby’s Place, and Best Famous Pizza.

“Good luck to everyone,” said Liolios. “I’m going to do what I’ve always done, because it’s up to the people to decide who makes Cornwall’s best pizza.”

Louis’ Pizzeria will compete against 2-4-1 Pizza, Bobby’s Place, Boston Pizza, Domino’s

Pizza, Pizza Pizza, Milano’s, and Best Famous Pizza.

Dessert pizza will be served complimentary of Dairy Queen Grill & Chill Cornwall.

“Cornwall has an appetite for generosity and all-dressed pizza,” said event chair Dan Carbonnell, an active member of the service club. “This is a fun, family-friendly event about enjoying the city’s legendary pizza and giving back to the community. But tickets are running out.”

The Cornwall Kinsmen Club’s annual Pizza Party has raised over $121,535 for local non-profits, youth programs, and other local charit-

able initiatives in the last decade.This year, proceeds will be sliced up several

ways to the Longue Sault Public School Spec Ops Program (a fitness and character develop-ment program), Koala Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Cornwall, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, and the family of Sean Cowan, an Eamer’s Corners Public School student battling leukemia.

can have serious consequences. So it’s very important to ask about health and safety pre-cautions and certifications before you hire a roofing contractor.

Did you know?• By law, workers must be trained in fall pro-

tection and must be protected at all times whenworking above 3 metres (10 feet).

• Employers must train workers in workplace safety hazards.

Before signing a contract ask the contractor about worker safety

• Is the contractor registered with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board? (WSIB administerscompensation and no-fault insurance.)

• Have the workers been trained to work safely?

• Will workers be wearing fall protection equipment?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, look for another contractor.

Home renovation problems are consistently among the top consumer complaints in Ontario

Take the following precautions before you sign a contract:

• Get written estimates for the work.

Generally, three estimates will provide enough information,but get as many as you need to feel comfortable making a final decision.

• Ensure the estimates contain everything you ask for. Assume anything not listed is not includedin the price.

• Before signing the contract, ensure you fully understand what you are signing for and what is included.

• Ensure the contract covers all discussed terms. This should include a breakdown of all costsand applicable taxes. A “hand shake” prom-ise may not be enforceable if it’s not included in awritten contract.

• Avoid contractors who offer tax-free deals.

This can be a sign that a business is avoidingim-portant consumer and worker protection responsibilities as well. A tax-free deal without areceipt provides no legal recourse over the goods and services purchased, and can result in youhaving to pay twice if the job is left unfinished or done poorly.

the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. Or try rubbing the hinges with petroleum jelly. If these tricks don’t work, lift the hinge pins about halfway and lubricate them with three-in-one oil, using a rag to catch drips.

Squeaky FloorFor a temporary fix, sprinkle talcum powder

over the noisy area and sweep it into the cracks. Be sure to remove any traces of powder if you’re ever going to refinish the floor.

Peeling WallpaperWith a knife, smear wallpaper paste onto a

piece of writing paper. Rub the paper against the underside of the peeling section. Press the wall-paper against the wall. Slide the writing paper out and smooth away bubbles with a clean cloth.

Worn CaningA little sagging over time is natural but

reversible. To tighten caning back up, use a sponge to wet the underside with warm water.

Let dry slowly overnight. Repeat if necessary.Dusty ChandelierAllow the fixture to cool. Wear a pair of white

cotton gloves-one dry, one dampened with glass cleaner. (For crystal, use one part rubbing alcohol to three parts distilled water.) Wipe each prism with the damp glove, then the dry one.

Stained TubCombine equal amounts of cream of tartar

and baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let sit for a half hour, then rinse well with water.

Stuck Sliding WindowsA little silicone spray lubricant (sold at hard-

ware stores) will grease the skids. Spray it onto a rag, then wipe along the tracks, whether they’re metal, wood, or plastic.

Hard-to-Remove DecalsSpray the decals and the surrounding areas

with WD-40, lifting the edges to get underneath, if possible. Let sit, then gently scrape away the decal with the edge of a credit card. Degrease

the tub with liquid dishwashing soap.Slamming DoorSoften the slam of a door by affixing a few

pieces of peel-and-stick foam weather stripping around the doorstop. Or get a wide rubber band and wrap it around the doorknobs on both sides, stretching it across the edge of the door. Don’t cover the latch.

Hard-to-Remove LightbulbPress the center of a foot-long strip of duct

tape onto the middle of the bulb. Fold each loose end in half so it sticks onto itself. Gripping each end between your thumb and index finger, give a counterclockwise twist to loosen the bulb.

Dry Cutting BoardRevive your board by gently warming a bot-

tle of pure mineral oil (available at drugstores) in a bowl of hot water, then wiping the oil onto the surface with a soft cloth. Wipe off the excess four to six hours later.

Flattened Down CushionsPut them outside in the sun for a few hours,

flipping them halfway through. (Be

careful-leaving them out too long may fade the fabric.) The sun will help evaporate the moisture that gets into the filling over time, and the cush-ions should plump up nicely.

Scuffed LinoleumRub the spot with white toothpaste and a dry

cloth or with an eraser. Or spray WD-40 on a towel and rub lightly, making sure to degrease the area afterward with liquid dishwashing soap and water.

Dirty DecanterFill the decanter halfway with hot water, a

few drops of liquid dishwashing soap, two table-spoons of white vinegar, and a cup of uncooked rice. Swirl the rice around for a few minutes to remove the residue, rinse with hot water, and air-dry.

Choose the improvements that add the most value to your home

If you were offered $100,000, no strings attached, what home improvements would you do? Chances are, a long laundry list of changes come to mind, from refinishing the hardwood floors to adding a new bathroom. Some home improvements, however, are more likely to increase your home’s value than others. Although you shouldn’t think of your home as an investment, with limited home improvement funds, it’s good to consider whether a project has a decent return on investment.

Tackle the quick projects that are most timely

Whether winter is coming or you’re consid-ering projects in another season, some home improvements are more urgent than others—saving you money immediately or preventing devastating damage. Sometimes it only takes ten minutes or less to make simple changes around the house that boost your living space.

Decide to DIY or notEven if you’re a weekend warrior with a well-

stocked workshop, not all home improvement projects are suitable to do yourself (or at least, without the help of a professional). Know your limits, start small if you’re a beginner, and then keep calm and DIY on (if you so wish).

Hone your home improvement skillsBig projects or small, probably all of us could

stand to learn some decent home repair or

home improvement skills. (All around the home, there are things we should never have to pay others to fix for us.) Learn Bob Villa-worthy skills and help others at the same time by volunteer-ing or through free clinics and other resources. Turn to great reading resources and try starter projects too. If you get stuck on a project, iOS app Fountain will connect you to a home improvement expert to answer your question for $5. Find inspiration for your next home project

Pinterest is your friend, homeowners. As is Houzz, This Old House, and BHG. Zillow Diggs is pretty neat because it not only shows you pro-ject photos, but cost estimates and contractors as well. You can also binge watch HGTV on Netflix, but we’re warning you, you may never leave the house again.

Get the Right ToolsYou can’t really improve your home much

with just your bare hands (you’ll need a multi-tool at least!). Equip your toolbox with the essen-tial tools for any minor repair or major project, such as basic plumbing tools. Don’t forget your smartphone might be the best DIY tool in your kit, though, and, when all else fails, there’s duct tape.

Find Money for Your Home ImprovementUnfortunately, most home improvements

do not pay for themselves. If you can’t afford to finance the project in full with cash, know the different ways you can finance your home improvement without putting your home at risk. Also, if you know the difference between tax breaks you get for home repairs or home improvements, you can make the proper deduc-tions at tax time and get some money back from your project. Similarly, if you’re paying private mortgage insurance, home improvements that increase the value of your home could help you eliminate that cost, which, although it doesn’t raise funds for your project, can reduce your housing expenses overall.

Choose the Right ContractorAbout as important as finding a good dentist

and finding a good therapist: Finding a respon-sible handyman or contractor. Horror stories of homeowners being scammed by contractors or having work done so shoddily that it cost thou-sands of dollars to redo (not to mention the money already spent) give me the shivers. Vet your contractors carefully:

Get recommendations from friends, neigh-bors, and supply houses.

Check for complaints against the contractor.

Find out what licenses and permits they need.

Check out the contractor’s insurance. Don’t skip this step!

Meet with the contractor.Get quotes. Track the quote variables with a

spreadsheet or other list.

Ask for references and check them out.The FTC offers advice on questions you

should ask a contractor, during which you might want to slyly take a look at their trucks and tools for telling signs.

Save Money on Your Home Improvement Projects

The more money we save on one home improvement project, the more we have left for all the other ones we want to do. In addi-tion to knowing the remodeling projects that offer the most bang for your buck, know which elements of a project you can splurge or skimp on—spend more on items that are hard to replace, such as the bathtub, but skimp on the faucet, for example, or spend more on a professional range if you’re a gour-met cook and save on the decorative tiles and flooring that look like premium materials.

Have a PlanLast but not least, one of the worst things

you can do when it comes to home improve-ments is to start a project without the major details—cost, time, materials, and design—as realistic as possible from the start. Nothing costs more than having to “change horses in midstream” (e.g., you want to move the fridge somewhere else now or want to change your tile choice). Use design tools to conceptual-ize your project and add a healthy buffer (10-15% more) to your time and financial budget to account for the inevitable surprises.

Thank you to those doctors and nurses both here in Cornwall, and in Ottawa, for their compassion and help over many months, and to the palliative care team during her short stay.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Team is planning to launch a new cancer study, which will be named for Carol-Ann, and we wish to let everyone know that her “ Curl for the Cure” fundraiser will be back in early 2017 at the Cornwall Curling Centre. Carol-Ann was passionate about this fundraiser and we are determined to continue in her memory.

South Glengarry councillor resigns seat to take new jobTOdd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – South Glengarry Coun. Joyce Gravelle is leaving office.

The township announced Wednesday morning she will be resigning her seat.

Gravelle later said a new career option will place her in a conflict of interest if she remains on council, so she decided to offer her resig-nation. The sepcifics of the new job have not been disclosed.

“It has been a privilege for me to have served the citizens of South Glengarry at the municipal council table for the last 10 years.,” she said. “This time on council has broadened my understanding of the municipal process and has helped me better appreciate the amazing community we live in.

“Unfortunately, I must reluctantly resign

from council to take advantage of a career opportunity which would otherwise place me in a conflict of interest. It is a decision that I make with a very heavy heart. However, I will continue to fully participate in the life of our community working with various organiza-tions and groups and as a volunteer.”

South Glengarry Mayor Ian McLeod thanks Gravelle for her 10 years as a councillor.

“She will be sadly missed around the coun-cil table and we wish her the best of luck as she pursues this new opportunity,” said McLeod.

Gravelle said she may return to council in the future, if the right conditions present themselves.

South Glengarry CAO Bryan Brown said Gravelle’s experience around the council table will be missed.

Council will be reviewing its options and

procedures for filling the vacant position in the near future.

Council can opt to hold a by-election, or appoint someone to the vacant seat.

Williamstown naturalist leads ‘discovery Science’ during March Break

CORNWALL, Ontario – If it’s related to the St. Lawrence River, Kate Schwartz knows something about it, and she loves to share her knowledge.

The 18-year-old hosted the first ‘Discovery Science’ March Break event in Cornwall.

The free afternoon drop-in sessions was offered through a partnership between OPG and the River Institute of Environmental Sciences.

“Scientific research leads me to continu-ously learn new things about the river and i ts ecosystems,” said Schwar tz , of Williamstown.

For over a decade, she has been connect-ed to river institute programming, and for the last two years, Schwartz has led the popular Science & Nature Rocks sessions at the Cornwall Public Library.

Her extensive natural history collection and wildlife journals contain bones, teeth, nests, feathers, and illustrations docu-menting dozens of local birds, fish, and animals.

Designed to be fun as well as interactive, Discovery Science is a brand new program that introduces the world of science and nature to children and visitors of all ages.

OPG’s Visitor Centre will play host to ‘sci-ence stations’ that feature experiments, arts and crafts, plants, animals, music, and

displays all focusing on scientific discovery. Visitors will leave each session with take away items that highlight the theme of the day.

“We are very grateful to the OPG and the Visitor Centre for our ongoing partnership with respect to science,” said Jeff Ridal, exec-utive director of the river institute. “In par-ticular, this program provides a unique opportunity for visitors to be inspired by Kate who is just so passionate about science and nature.”

SLC Sharks win Challenge CupAdAm [email protected]

BARRIE, Ont. – The St. Lawrence College Sharks men’s hockey team won the Challenge Cup after defeating the host Georgian College Grizzlies 2-0 in the final game.

When Matt Gregoire tapped in a loose puck off of a deflection in the first period to put the Sharks ahead 1-0, he had no idea it would be the eventual game-winner of the provincial championship.

With Brian Landry scoring in the empty net with six seconds left in the game, the celebration was on for the Sharks.

“Words can’t express how proud we are of this group” said Sharks coach Mike Pettinella. “The guys deserved it from day one. They were so com-mitted to our team approach, with everyone buy-ing into their role, it really made a difference the last two days.”

After the Sharks scored the go-ahead goal, the momentum would shift back and forth, with vet-eran Sharks goalie Ryan Cooper, playing on top of his game by shutting out the Grizzlies.

Co-coach Sean Boulerice shared the Sharks strategy that helped the team prevail over the host Georgian College. “We knew they were a lit-tle tired having played a wild card game earlier in the day, so we wanted to be sure to dictate the tempo by winning every battle and forcing them to skate,” said Boulerice.

Coming into the tournament, the coaches reminded the team that being ranked number one does not do them any favours. They are still going to have to work as if it was anyone’s tourna-ment to win.

“We remember the disappointment from last

year [referring to the Sharks settling for silver at the 2014-15 Challenge Cup] and wanted to win so badly for the returning players that were on that team,” said Boulerice.

The Sharks finished the season with a 20-2-1

record and a Gold Challenge Cup to bring back to Cornwall.

Both coaches and players would like to thank all the support they have received throughout the season, especially to those that made the trip

to Barrie to cheer them on for two days.The annual Sharks Athletics banquet, where

student-athletes and coaches from all teams will be recognized for their efforts this season, takes place on Wednesday, April 6.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of the United Counties Science Fair, which is a non-profit charitable organization run by a team of volunteer teachers and parents. Public viewing at St. Lawrence High School will take place in the school gymnasium from 8:30am to 2:00pm, followed by a Science Spectacular show from 2:30pm to 3:30pm, then the awards presenta-tion in the cafeteria from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. We will be awarding approximately $10,000 in prizes, awards, scholarships, and trips, includ-ing the opportunity to represent our regional fair at the Canada Wide Science Festival in Montreal in May!
