Patricia ‘Tish’ Humphries was named the Citizen of the Year at the 11th annual South Glengarry Business & Community Awards banquet on Saturday, April 2, 2016.Adam Brazeau

AdAm [email protected]

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ont. – Patricia ‘Tish’ Humphries has been named South Glengarry’s Citizen of the Year.

Humphries graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1977, married her husband Ralph and moved to their farm on Highway 34 north of Lancaster where they raised their four children.

Throughout her children’s school years, Humphries was a member of the Iona Academy PTA for 14 years, serving as president for seven of those years.

She was also an executive member of the Char-Lan Skating Club during this time and was a founding member of the Charlottenburg Neighborhood Watch.

Humphries and her family faced the challen-ges of raising a child with special needs and she took note of the lack of support programs for those facing these issues.

Armed with the knowledge that traditional support networks for developmentally chal-lenged adults ended at age 21, a group of con-cerned parents and educators formed a grassroots

group in 2009 to discuss their concerns for dependent adults and the Beyond 21 group was born.

Humphries was elected as president of the Beyond 21 board of directors in 2011, a position that she still holds today.

She has led the team at Beyond 21 to receive two Ontario Trillium grants, which has enabled the program to grow from serving five families to 34 families from SD&G.

Humphries was also active with the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation’s “To Your Health” campaign, which raised funds for the CCH’s MRI and urology table.

She engaged the residents of South Glengarry and North Glengarry and is now actively engaged in the CCH’s chemotherapy project.

In 2015, Humphries hosted a “Chemo for Christmas” holiday open house at her home and in lieu of hostess gifts, requested that guests make a donation instead – raising $3,600 towards the project.

Event orgnizers described her as a friend, men-tor, and a champion for those in need - a true role model and community leader.

Humphries named Citizen of the Year

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall city council code of conduct that has taken a meandering route to approval has finally been adopted.

Council approved the document Tuesday night, which paves the way for members of the public to file complaints and watch over members of council with a clear set of rules to work from.

“The committee worked really hard on this code of conduct,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. “It is really hard to set up a code of

conduct to police yourself. But this is not just about us, this goes beyond us as a council.”

Many councillors dismissed the first draft of the code as repetitive and confusing and delayed approval of the document, sending it back to the committee level for more work.

“This is a much improved document from the first time it came before us,” said Coun. David Murphy. “It’s more fluid when you read through it.”

Murphy successfully argued to have one line from the code removed. The clause grant-ed what he felt was too much power to the city CAO over what information that person

would share with council on any particular issue.

“There was an internal issue and it was HR related and if council hadn’t found out there could have been lawsuits,” he said. “The CAO could have chosen not to give us that information.

“How do we know…if the CAO can decide what information to share.”

Coun. Andre Rivette, no fan of the code of conduct to begin with, agreed with Murphy.

“It’s important council gets the informa-tion it feels it needs,” he said. “I want them to know they work for the mayor and council.

“Just tell me the truth and I’ll make the decision. If you don’t tell me the truth and I make a decision then we have a problem.”

Council agreed with that sentiment and pulled the clause from the code.

The code includes a litany of policies and protocols that cover a variety of rules from being impartial when it comes to making decisions, providing transparency and avoid-ing criticism of staff members that calls their credibility into question.

Some 32 cities have integrity commission-ers in Ontario, from very small towns to the larger centres.

Council code of conduct finally approved

Lauzon hosting two passport clinicsAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – Planning your spring travels?

Stormont–Dundas–South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon and his staff will host two passport clinics this spring to assist local residents with completing their applications without having

to go to Ottawa or Montreal.“Our passport clinics are a great way to pro-

vide a federal government service right close to home for my constituents,” said Lauzon.

The clinics will be held in South Glengarry (April 16, Char-Lan DHS) and Chesterville (April 23, NDDHS) on Saturday mornings where applicants can get their photos taken,

complete the application, and have it reviewed by staff before they ship it off postage-free to complete the service.

Since 2004, Lauzon and staff have hosted 48 passport clinics and assisted with over 60,000 passport applications.

“People like being able to come over on a Saturday morning and not have to travel to Ottawa or mail their application in with the risk of errors,” said Lauzon.

Each clinic runs in the school gymnasium from 10 a.m. to noon.

QUICK FACTSPhotographers and staff will be on hand to

assist with photos and the application

process. Before attending, applicants are asked to

review the passport clinic flyer being mailed locally through Canada Post, or to visit MP Guy Lauzon’s website or Facebook page for the full details and list of requirements.

For child applications specifically, appli-cants are asked to call Lauzon’s constituency office toll-free at 1-888-805-2513 as require-ments have recently changed and can be explained by staff in advance to save time.

Attendees are encouraged to pick up forms in advance at a local Canada Post office, or online at www.passport.gc.ca, to complete and save time at the clinic.

Cornwall to have greater percentage of seniors than mostTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall is expected to have more senior citizens, on average, com-pared to the rest of the province in just nine years.

City councillors heard last Tuesday night from the local Senior Friendly Community Plan developers, including Carmen Cousineau, who said Cornwall needs to brace for the care needs this aging population will require.

“We are in the midst of a major shift in the demographics of our community,” she said.

By 2025 30 per cent of Cornwall’s population will include people 65 and older. The provincial average is closer to 20 per cent.

“That number is eye-popping. Clearly we have an obligation to plan for that particular future,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement.

The senior community plan developers have been engaged with local senior’s groups and others to discuss a myriad of concerns, includ-ing adding to the number of benches in city parks, to ensuring there are enough bathrooms available for public use.

Some 700 people have voiced concerns and nearly 70 recommendations have been filed at city hall to help make Cornwall a more senior-friendly community.

“Many of the actions have been imple-mented already,” said Cousineau, suggesting something as simple as moving a bus stop

closer to the entrance of a seniors’ building was completed. “We didn’t wait for the plan.”

Their work by plan developers suggests most seniors congregate and live in the city core as opposed to outlying neighbourhoods.

“Seniors attract seniors,” said Cousineau. The plan is going to be filed with city hall for

future referral by municipal decision-makers. A report from city administrators on how to implement its recommendations is forthcoming.

Dr. Rachel Navaneelan Family & Cosmetic Dentistry’s desire to give back to the community is no April Fool’s Day prank.

The loud buzzing sound of dental tools came as sweet relief for Dawn Beauvais after having to delay a visit because she doesn’t have benefits.

“I haven’t been to see a dentist in 15 years,” said Beauvais. “Thank you, and keep up the great work. This is incredible.”

Starting as early as 3:30 a.m., dozens of people flocked to the dental practice for its annual Dentistry from the Heart event on Friday (April 1).

Dr. Navaneelan and her staff treated patients on a first-come, first-serve basis, for free

Police have a duty to protect and serve, but there needs to be greater assistance with mental health interactions.

his was a major theme at a regional consulta-tion held by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of its Strategy for a Safer Ontario program in Cornwall on Friday (April 1).

The feedback collected will help shape the new provincial plan for policing, according to the ministry’s website.

The meeting at the Benson Centre was open to community stakeholders and closed to the public.

“We’re starting to develop the picture of what policing will be in the future,” said Sgt. Dave MacLean, of the Cornwall Community Police Service.

He wants to see a full-time support service for

individuals experiencing mental health crises at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) to help free up time for officers to focus on policing.

lauzoN SlamS liberal budgetLocal Tory MP Guy Lauzon slammed the first

Liberal government budget as doing too little for job growth, while burying the country in debt.

Lauzon, sitting in opposition for the first time in years for a federal budget, said middle-class families that are supposed to enjoy tax credits promised by the Justin Trudeau Liberals shouldn’t count their extra Loonies just yet.

“At the end of the day it will probably just be a wash on all these tax credits,” lamented Lauzon.

The tax-free Canada Child Benefit credit will provide higher monthly payments to low- and middle-income households.

Families with children under 18 will start to receive the Canada Child Benefit in July. While the amount of individual cheques will vary based on family income, the Liberals claim that nine of out of 10 families will get more help than they do under existing programs.

But Lauzon said that work is being done at the expense of removing other tax credits families could use to help with the education of children, and enrolling them in minor sports.

local iNSurer SupportS alzheimer Society

When you rely on donations to provide free information, support, and education programs for people with dementia, every dollar counts.

The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group, a home and auto insurance company focused on

clients throughout eastern Ontario, recently named The Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District as one of three recipients of their 2016 WE C.A.R.E. (Create a Ripple Effect) charitable grant for use in ongoing programs serving local seniors.

“This $25,000 donation will help our Society make a difference for individuals with dementia and their families,” said Shelley Vaillancourt, exec-utive director Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District. “We chose two projects that will make a tremendous impact in our community.”

Part of the funding will secure transportation for the non-profit’s day program and the rest will be used to create a ‘Bilingual Dementia Friends’ video to help communities understand dementia and how their friendships can support residents living with dementia.

Alkaline Entertainment presents ‘Bee Gees and Abba: Explosion’ as part of its popular 2016 tribute concert series.

“For fans of the music, this is as close to two disco greats of the 1970s as it gets,” said Alkaline Entertainment founder Jeff Brunet. “Come out and experience an authentic tribute. When you go to a live show, you are supporting the band, the venue, and the city.”

Caribbean-themed resto-bar on Montreal Road is the Canadian dream.

The Seguins held a grand opening for their new eatery, Chez Liz, on Friday (April 1) in Cornwall. Guests were entertained throughout the evening by Robert Cote from Quiet Moments.

“It’s our first restaurant venture, and it’s something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Lisanne.

Thirty-one years ago, the Seguins closed the doors to their confectionery store, The Black Jack, on Montreal Road.

“She used to say, ‘I should go there (when it was Remington’s) once a week to make Caesars,” said Gilles.

Lisanne added: “Well, be careful what you wish for. We’re here!”

The decor and menu are inspired by Caribbean culture, but traditional Cornwall cui-sine like poutines and smoked meat sandwiches are served daily.

Pizza party raises $14k, Louis’ once again tops the listTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – There were too many winners to count at the 10th annual Kinsmen Pizza Party Friday night in Cornwall.

First off, more than $14,000 was raised on the night, bringing the grand total put together by the sold out event that samples pizza form across the city at $135,000 since its inception.

A handful of local charities were provided with some much needed cash infusions, includ-ing Cornwall Wildcats Football, which was fur-nished with $10,000 to help with equipment purchases.

“It will really help make sure our children are safe on the field,” said Wilcats president Kirby Camplin, who added the money will help cover the cost of replacing the hundreds of helmets used by young people on the gridiron.

The helmets retail for about $325 apiece. This year, proceeds were also sliced up several

ways to the Longue Sault Public School Spec Ops

Program (a fitness and character development program), Koala Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Cornwall, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, and the family of Sean Cowan, an Eamer’s Corners Public School student bat-tling leukemia.

And the pizza…oh the pizza. For the fourth time in a row Louis’ Pizzeria

once again topped both the judge’s and people’s lists. The judge’s top three also included Pizza Pizza and 2-4-1 Pizza, respectively, while the people went with Bobby’s Place and 2-4-1.

Boston Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, Milano’s, and Best Famous Pizza were also on the roster, while dessert pizza was provided by Dairy Queen Grill & Chill Cornwall.

Event chair Dan Carbonnell said the sponsors and volunteers were huge parts of an event that has become a staple every spring in Cornwall.

“Without everyone helping this wouldn’t be possible,” he said.

TC Media was a proud sponsor of the event.Cornwall Wildcats Football was presented with $10,000 at the Kinsmen Pizza Party.

Stewart leaves the airwaves after 20 years as radio personalityAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – Fans across the region will miss the lively, yet soothing voice of Sue Stewart as the final chapter of a 20-year career draws to a close.

The Finch-native is signing off as co-host of Fresh Mornings with Jimmy & Sue on 104 FM to fully pursue her real estate career with ReMax Cornwall.

Her final broadcast will air from 6-9 a.m. on Monday (April 11).

“I’m really going to miss this, being a voice for people who needed one,” Sue Stewart told Seaway News in an interview at the Corus Radio Cornwall station on Sunday (April 3).

In addition to providing entertaining com-mentary, local news updates, and promoting spe-cial events, Stewart has also become well-known for her volunteer efforts and charity fundraising. She is an active member of Team Cornwall.

“The most rewarding part of the past 20 years is knowing that I was able to help out in a small way and together our efforts have helped make Cornwall a better place to live,” she said.

Stewart first considered a career behind the microphone after catching the attention of a CBC Radio staffer when she was only 15, while hosting a mud bog competition at the Finch Antique and Steam Show.

“He said, I’d make a great announcer one day,” said Stewart.

After graduating college, she landed a radio

job in Huntsville, but it would be only a year before she landed back in eastern Ontario at CJSS on Water Street.

“My son Ryan was two months old at that time and now he is off to university,” said Stewart. “My daughter Alex is now 9, and this move gives me a chance to be a normal Mom and spend mornings with my family.”

Stewart leaves behind great memories of a radio career that has also helped forge profound friendships.

“I have had the privilege of working with some great people on both sides of the microphone,” said Stewart. “I look forward to continuing to make a difference and help people find their next home.”

Parvo vaccine clinic a howling successAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – As parvovirus plagues the dog population in Cornwall, the SD&G SPCA is tak-ing a proactive approach to battle the deadly canine disease.

The line of pet owners snaked outside the Agora Centre during the free parvovirus vaccina-tion clinic on Saturday (March 19). “We needed to do something. It’s a highly contagious virus and a lot of dogs end up dying from the lack of a simple vaccination,” said SD&G SPCA inspector Bonnie Bishop. “Last year, we dealt with 70 positive cases of parvo, in addition to cases from local veterinar-ians.” The SD&G SPCA targeted ‘parvovirus hot spots’ around the city with pamphlets days before the clinic, mainly south of Montreal Road. The par-ticipants will have to return in three weeks with their pooches for a second round of shots.

In 2014, parvo swept across the city keeping pet owners on high alert. One Cornwall animal hospital had reported seeing dozens of puppies with early symptoms of the virus.

According to the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA), parvovirus is a serious and potentially fatal condition that attacks the gastro-intestinal tract and immune system of puppies and dogs, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Dr. Bruce Robertson, of Campbellford Veterinary Services, volunteered his services at the SD&G SPCA parvovirus vaccination clinic at the Agora Centre in Cornwall, Ont., on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Adam Brazeau

weekly fundraiser a safe bet for bingo playersAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – Every numbered ball rolling from the buzzing machine is a winner during Kinsmen TV Bingo on CogecoTV.

The Cornwall Kinsmen Club is inviting the community to join them every Tuesday for a friendly game from the comfort of their homes as they watch Cornwall CogecoTV channel 11 and channel 700 HD.

“The Cornwall area loves playing every week, because it’s a chance to win money and help local causes,” said Kinsmen TV Bingo chair Steve Riviere.

The service club sells about 1,000 bingo cards a week.

It’s only $5 for a card with four games, and $10 on the first Tuesday of every month (with more cash prizes up for grabs). They’re avail-able at local convenience stores, Giant Tiger, and Walmart.

Kinsmen TV Bingo gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

“CogecoTV is extremely proud of its long-standing partnership with the Cornwall Kinsmen Club. In addition to Kinsmen TV Bingo remaining one of our more popular programs, the broadcast fits nicely into our role as Cornwall and area’s only local television station, providing access programming to the com-munity,” said CogecoTV production assistant Gabriel Riviere-Reid.

Event proceeds will support several local

non-profits, including Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SD&G, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation, and Agape Centre.

“You don’t even have to leave your house to play, unless you win,” joked April’s bingo caller Jean-Marcel Lemoeligu.

CORNWALL, Ont. – If you want to live a long, happy, healthy life, be kind and stay busy, says Helen Dorie, who turned 98 March 21.

With her two sons, Lionel and Silva, at her side, Dorie celebrated the milestone birthday with dozens of fellow club members at the Seaway Seniors Citizens Centre on Guy Street in Cornwall, Ont. on Wednesday (March 23).

“It’s so nice to be surrounded by family and

friends,” she said after blowing out the rows of flickering candles.

Elizabeth Flynn, president of the Seaway Senior Citizens Club, described the birthday girl as an incredibly active woman with a conta-gious smile.

“We’re proud to have her as a member of our club,” said Flynn. “For 98, she is so active. It’s amazing to see.”

Sometimes the argument is lost before it is even made.

Case in point: a story we published about six months ago where we lobbied, through quotes and assertions from hockey experts, that the Montreal Canadiens should do more for Cornwall’s greatest hockey export – Edouard ‘Newsy’ Lalonde.

Our story let it be known that Newsy is an afterthought as far as the fabled NHL franchise is concerned. It was suggested that Lalonde’s number 4 (yup, he wore THAT number) should be retired alongside some of the other Canadien greats like Guy Lafleur, Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau.

We even created a Facebook group to that end.

But in Quebec, there’s no way you’re going to win an argument where your premise is that a legend like Beliveau (the ‘other’ guy to wear number 4) should have to share his place in his-tory with anyone.

So, our lobbying efforts have fallen on the deaf ears of a franchise (and fan base) that is in the final stretch of a season to forget in Montreal. It’s not to suggest our stories are required read-ing at the Bell Centre, but we thought the team might have something more for a man con-sidered by many to be the Babe Ruth of hockey.

We aren’t the only ones to notice. La Presse, a news organization with a lot more clout than

we could ever muster in Montreal, published a story last week that listed Newsy’s attributes, and went as far as suggesting that if it were not for the Cornwall man who was also the greatest lacrosse player of his time, there would be no Montreal Canadiens today.

A Cornwall guy…responsible for laying the foundation of one of the most successful pro-fessional sports franchises on the planet. Nice.

Newsy scored 124 NHL goals for the Canadiens, beginning in the 1917-1918 season, including a remarkable 37 in 1919-1920 in just 23 games. It is said that he even scored the first goal in Canadiens’ history in 1910. In the 1919 playoffs he scored 17 goals in just 10 games.

Nwesy ‘only’ had 41 assists in his five NHL seasons with the Canadiens. But he was also a champion, winning the Stanley Cup with the Habs (the first in team history) in 1916 as a play-ing coach. He scored 28 goals that season, in 24 games. In 1950 he was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Newsy’s grandson has been blunt in his assessment of the situation.

“The team’s recognition of him is non-exist-ent,” Richard Quintal once told me. “Jean Beliveau once, many years ago, I was talking with him and he recalled me from Grandpa’s funeral. He said the team should do something for him.”

There are some references to Newsy at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

A small bronze plaque has been fixed to the wall at one of the entrances to the Bell Centre that bears Newsy’s name. His visage is also

included among a row of others in a banner in the Habs locker room that speaks the immortal words: “To you from failing hands, we throw the torch.” He’s also a member of the ring of honour that circles the Bell Centre – the list of Canadiens players and builders in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

But that’s it. Those monuments, if you can call them that, aren’t the high-profile tributes that others have received and Newsy deserves.

Here in Cornwall there’s a little more taking place. The driveway leading to the Cornwall Civic Complex is officially known as ‘Newsy Lalonde Way.’ There’s also a mural of him inside the facility.

And later this spring The Ontario Heritage Trust is installing a plaque on the Cornwall Civic Complex property, marking Newsy’s

connection to the birth of the NHL and exploits as a member of The Flying Frenchmen.

Those are all great things, and it’s important that here in Fun City we recognize the exploits of our homegrown stars – even if the others made famous by that individual fail to take notice.

It’s clear the Canadiens have no interest in ‘co-retiring’ the number 4 immortalized by Beliveau. But is it too much to ask the organiza-tion to do more for Lalonde?

I don’t think so. A banner, perhaps without a number, hanging from the rafters of the Bell Centre is a fitting tribute to a Cornwall man who left an indelible mark on a sport, and franchise that has known generations of successes.

Here’s hoping.

‘Newsy’ Lalonde deserves more from the Montreal Canadiens

Editor:As a member of the Stormont Dundas &

South Glengarry PC Riding association, as well as a rate payer from both, the City of Cornwall, the Township of South Stormont, and the Township of South Glengarry, I am appalled by the recent comments made by S.D. & S.G. PC Riding Association President and Former City Councillor Glen G. Grant.

Mr. Grant stated in his editorial that Cornwall has invested 67 million to upgrade their Water

Treatment Plant. What he forgot to mention is that over half of that money came from both the Federal and Provincial Governments, meaning rate payers on both sides contributed to this Project.

His ‘US against Them’ mentality is widely incorrect. His divisive comments do nothing to forward the economic developments in our entire region. Cornwall is surrounded by Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry counties. It’s time for all local municipalities to put their

collective heads together so that we are able to attract future business development to the ENTIRE region, not just one area. What concerns me most regarding Mr. Grant’s comments is the fact that he is the President of the SD & SG PC Riding Association. Are these the views of the Association executive?

Is this the view of M.P.P Jim McDonell? Is this the view of M.P. Guy Lauzon? Mr. Grant stated that Cornwall can’t afford it. What will this cost the City of Cornwall, Mr. Grant? The Majority of

surrounding County residents already support Cornwall businesses, who pay Cornwall Property Taxes.

This proposed project will be paid IN FULL by the users who will have access to these services, and for the most part, are already established businesses along the South Glengarry Boundary Road border from the 401 South to Tyotown Road, myself included.

The last man hanged in Cornwall didn’t spend much time in the old Cornwall Jail from the time Ontario Provincial Police detectives from District 11 arrested him in his London, Ont. home, while having Thanksgiving dinner with his wife and children, until he fell through the trap door of the court yard gallows.

Peter Balcombe, a 24-year-old Canadian Army lieutenant, was hanged on May 25, 1954, less than a year after his arrest for the murder of Marie Anne Carrier, a Canadian Women’s Army Corps Reserve Sergeant.

The wheels of justice moved quicker in those days.

Stacked against today’s lumbering, drawn-out justice system, where a routine trial can take a year, if not longer, and murder trials take years to get under way, Balcombe’s arrest, trial, convic-tion, appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, and execution moved at the speed of light.

Balcombe’s defence lawyer, from Ottawa, appealed on the grounds that there was no proof that the victim had been murdered in Ontario, thus the charge of murder should have been laid by Quebec police and the trial held in Quebec. The defence also claimed that wall-to-wall news coverage in the United Counties made it impos-sible for Balcombe to receive a fair jury trial. The appeal was rejected.

Balcombe was arrested just three days after Carrier’s nude body was found in a ditch near Iroquois.

He was having an affair with Carrier while serving at a Quebec military base where she was stationed. The trial was told that upon learning Balcombe was married, the attractive reservist

broke off the relationship. She was stabbed sev-eral times during an argument with Balcombe over the break-up.

After Balcombe was found guilty of murder on Feb. 27, 1954, his defence filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada. On May 19, the appeal was denied. Six days later, Balcombe was hanged.

The night before he was hanged, the Canadian Army court martialled him, opening the door for Balcombe to be hanged as a civilian.

The identity of the professional hangman was never made public, but it is believed he was Camille Blanchard of Montreal who served as Quebec’s official hangman. The hangman arrived in Cornwall hours before the hanging and booked a room at the Lloyd-George Hotel, across the street from the courtyard. Several members of the official witness party joined Blanchard for a drink in his room after the hanging. He col-lected his $50 fee before leaving town in the morning.

Several minutes after the trap door was sprung, a local family doctor declared Balcombe dead and the noose was untied from his neck. His family never claimed the body. His remains were placed in an unmarked grave in the courtyard. Later, when part of the courtyard was converted into a parking lot, the body, along with several others, was removed to a local cemetery.

How different it would have been today. It would take at least two years to get to trial. A plea deal might see the charge reduced to man-slaughter. With time served, he could be out of jail, after day parole, with less than 10 years served.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On Dec. 22, 1977, Mayor

Gerald Parisien announced that an $18.5 million redevelopment project covering a two-block area of downtown Cornwall would begin in the spring. The shopping complex was called Cornwall Square. Several buildings, including St. Paul’s United Church, were demolished to make way for the development.

TRIVIA: A wind storm on Nov. 25, 1950 wrecked this Athletic Grounds structure. It was never replaced.

IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: Some of today’s kids might find this hard to believe, but before the internet, MP3s, iPods, texting, cell phones, Playstation, 58-inch flat screen television sets and surround sound, life was anything but boring for a kid. ... It was a time when kids spent most of their free time outdoors. It was a time when kids used their imagination and burned up energy. They played in the streets and hung out in neigh-bourhood parks. There was always something to do at the park. They rode bikes without brakes. Nobody wore a helmet, not even for a pick-up tackle football game in the park when two appointed captains picked the teams. ... They climbed trees and jumped off shed and garage roofs. A bottle of iodine was kept in the family medicine cabinet and used on cuts and scrapes. ... The worst thing a kid could hear was “I’m going to tell your mother.” ... They had newspaper routes with 60 or more customers and delivered the papers after school, or had a part-time Saturday job as a delivery boy at the family-owned neighbourhood grocery store where your parents ran a bill. ... They collected and traded comic books and read Mad Magazine. They played outside games called hide and go seek, kick the can, hop scotch, jumping rope, dodge ball, king of the castle and red rover. ...

Saturday mornings were spent at the Palace Theatre watching the Bowery Boys, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello and the Three Stooges. ... Movie heroes were called Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and Gene Autry. ... Old Yeller, about a boy and his dog, made us cry.

HERE AND THERE: Advice for Donald Trump from a Washington Post columnist - “When you are in hole, stop digging.” ... Couple of more weeks and it will be worm picking season. ... Barrie Colts head coach Dale Hawerchuk has signed a new three-year deal. ... A city doctor, upset with the increased driving time the change has created, wants to kick start a petition to over-turn the two-lane system on Second Street east that was created to provide bicycle lanes. ... In Chatham, Ont. the issue of police officers being paid while suspended has become front-page news. A Chatham-Kent sergeant made the 2015 Sunshine List ($109,352) while off the job. In May 2014 he was charged with 50 counts of fraud and suspended (with pay). That year he earned $109,878 for five months on the job. The ele-phant in the room is not so much suspension with pay but the length of time it takes for the courts to resolve a case.

THIS AND THAT: The Diocese of Ogdensburg, which includes Massena, is feeling the priest shortage crunch. Recent re-alignment puts four Massena area churches under one pastor. The diocese has seen the number of priests drop to 52 from 92 in 1998. ... Media buzz is that Postmedia will make another round of cuts at its stable of newspapers in the second quarter to shed millions in operation costs. The newspaper giant is burdened with unsustainable debt. There’s even talk of a sell-off of some newspapers.

Dozens helped by free training programCORNWALL, Ontario - Nearly three dozen

people with special needs in Cornwall and area have been able to access free training to get them working.

A $366,000 federal government grant was unveiled by local MP Guy Lauzon last year, which has covered the cost of administering the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities program which began taking applications almost immediately.

The Eastern Ontario Training Board received the money to help 32 people with disabilities in Cornwall, the United Counties of SD&G, and Akwesasne to overcome bar-riers to employment.

At the time Lauzon called the program a “win-win” for the local economy.

“I think people with disabilities are not appreciated like they should be,” said Lauzon. “ Those who are employed are often under-employed.

“If we have motivated people who want to work, we should try. Having a job is more than just a pay-cheque.”

Through the “Jobs Now” project, the Eastern Ontario Training Board assisted pro-ject participants to develop the skills and experience they needed to successfully enter the job market or return to school.

They learned or improved employment skills such as customer service and computer skills, and gained work experience with local employers in areas such as sales and service.

The program provided a wage subsidy to

employers who created or filled a position with a program participant, and planned to keep the participant employed after the pro-gram concluded. This allowed for training, transition, and long-term job opportunities for dozens of local residents with disabilities that may not find employment otherwise.

Diane Soucie, a project manager with the training board, said the local labour market needs more people.

She suggested, through figures collected by the training board that Ontario typically sees about 67 per cent of people aged 15 to 65 as members of the workforce - but in the Cornwall area the number drops to 60 per cent.

“That means four out of 10 are not con-nected to the labour force, and we need to reach out to those people, especially in a workforce that is growing,” she said.

Olympia Bowl rolls into nationalsAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – A group of young ath-letes from Olympia Bowl are on a quest for Canadian gold.

After winning the YBC (Youth Bowling Council) provincials in Bolton, Ont., on March 6, the senior girls team is representing Southern Ontario at the national championship tourna-ment in Calgary, from May 7-9.

Coached by Paul Flaro, the squad consists of: Kelsey Burke, Katelyn Lalonde, Sabrina Gatien, and Emily Vivarais.

Only Lalonde has been to nationals before. Last year, she placed fourth with the Olympia

Bowl junior girls team.“This time we’re bowling with confidence,”

said Lalonde. The group will be competing in 21 games

against the country’s best. Olympia Bowl donated lanes free of charge for their practices.

The foursome say the key to their success at the provincials was their “bond” on, and off, the lanes.

“After coaching for around 18 years, and three nationals, this is one of the few times there’s no drama, because they’re best friends,” said Flaro. Coach Paul Flaro and the Olympia Bowl senior girls team: Kelsey Burke, Katelyn

Lalonde, Sabrina Gatien, and Emily Vivarais.Adam Brazeau

The St. Joe’s Ladies’ Rugby Club returned from a five-day tour in Surrey, B. C. The team played and won two matches. They also saw the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, Stanley Park, the Pacific Ocean and other notable sites. The team is seen with players from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School.

opinionSeizing the opportunitynick WolochatiukDanceS With [email protected]

To get cookies that are up for grabs you must first convince the guy in charge of the jar that you belong in the queue. As I promised I have a tale that is better than fiction, an absolutely true personal story. Even though the statute of limitations has passed, and those who were involved in my adven-ture have long since retired or passed away, I’ll still tweak some of the names, dates and places just a wee bit.

Here goes: Through the aviation grapevine, I learned that the RCAF’s North Star transport aircraft was to be retired. The Air Force once had 24 of these reliable workhorses. In service since1947, they were being put to pasture, replaced by the CC-109

Yukon. The last official military flight was to take place on December 8, 1965, from CFB Downsview to CFB Trenton.

Larry Milberry, my fellow airplane-chaser and I, wanted to be there, so off we went to Downsview. As expected, at the Keele Street security gate we were challenged by the elderly commissionaire. Tilting his head downward to let his myopic eyes see over his thick reading glasses, he peered at us, noticing our civilian but presentable attire.

“And where are we off to today, gentlemen?”“Operations Hangar” I said quickly.“Operation Tiger? Hmmm… Wasn’t told any-

thing about that. Do you know where to go?”“Uh, yes – straight ahead, top of the hill, second

turn right.” And away we went. As predicted, the gleaming aircraft was in a

place of honour on the ramp. Invited guests were milling about the cavernous hangar. From a dis-creet vantage point, I carefully watched their every move. They were all twenty or forty years our senior. One by one they joined a queue in front of an officer armed with a clip board.

“Name? Your name sir. Thank you. Name, please. Thank you. Next, please. Name?” That sure sounded easy, so I joined the line.

“Name, please?”“Wolochatiuk.”“Wallachachiook? Don’t see that name sir. How

do you spell that?”“WOLO-CHAT-IUK, Wolochatiuk.”A long pause; I held my breath as his eyes ran

furtively down the list.“Sorry, sir – name’s not on the list.”

“So? Is that my fault?”“Sorry, sir; please spell that again.”That I did, very slowly. And with a surge of con-

fidence, I added “And you should also have Milberry: MIL-BERRY.”

We were in, and flying to Trenton on the last offi-cial flight of an RCAF Canadair North Star. The easy part was behind us. The tricky part was yet to come.

The throbbing of North Star 17506’s four Rolls Royce Merlin engines prevented us from eaves-dropping on the conversations of the VIPs that been invited to board this auspicious flight. The sound of four 1,760 horsepower engines trumped any conversation. It was fortunate for us that no one was able to listen in on our discussion of what might be awaiting us when we landed at CFB Trenton.

VinegarVinegar is forever being recommended

as a cleaner, for everything from windows and floors to false teeth. It may squeak, but it isn’t really very good at removing soil and breaking down grease. Because most soils are acid, an alkaline cleaner is much more effective at cutting them. Vinegar doesn’t have the emulsifying abil-ity of a soap or detergent either. It does have the value as a rinsing agent, though. Custodians have used a vinegar rinse (1/2 cup vinegar per gallon of water) to neu-tralize the alkaline residue left behind from floor cleaners and leave surfaces bright and streak-free. This also applies to dishwashers, and laundry, as it will pro-vide brighter coloured laundry and less spotted glassware. Vinegar’s acid person-ality also makes it good as a neutralizing agent, mild bleach, acid spotter and has some deodorizing ability. Distilled, plain white vinegar is best to use for all cleaning purposes.

Don’t play with fire Protect yourself with these fire prevention tips

Canadians may be taking some risks when it comes to fire safety according to a recent RBC Insurance survey, as 36 per cent of Canadian homeowners admit they don’t have a fire extinguisher in their kitchen.

“Damages from a fire can be a financial and emotional nightmare for homeowners” says Tim Bzowey, vice president, Home and Auto, RBC Insurance. “It’s important to understand

how employing a few simple safety tips can help protect our loved ones and homes from the dangers of fire.” Avoid using “octopus out-lets”. Clusters of wires and plugs can overload your electrical system leading to overheating and extremely dangerous electrical fires. Store combustibles such as newspapers, kindling, or matches away from the fireplace.

If you use a wood-burning fireplace, have your chimney inspected by a professional prior to the start of every heating season. It’s also important to make sure your fireplace and chimney are properly cleaned and maintained.

Closely monitor flame burning candles and, where possible, use wickless candles. The survey also found that 52 per cent of home-owners are lighting flame burning candles in their home.

Tougher punishment for driving needed while impaired opinion Column - SulTan JeSSa

Time is ripe for Canada to review and revise punishment for people charged and convicted for impaired driving.

Statistics show many positive changes have been made over the years.

But, impaired driving continues to be a widespread problem with a tragic human cost.

According to available statistics, there were 75,000 impaired driving cases in the country in 2014.

Statistics for last year are not immediately available.

According to 2014 statistics, nearly 1,500

people die each year as a result of impaired driving.

Also more than 63,000 Canadians are injured.

Canada does well when you compare this statistics to other countries.

But, with tougher laws, Canada can do much better.

At least this is my opinion.A few weeks ago, Marco Muzzo, the grand-

son of an Ontario billionaire, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for killing three children and their grandfather while driving drunk.

The accused who had pleaded guilty has

indicated he has no intention to appeal.Muzzo did offer tearful apology to grieving

couple at sentencing hearing. The defence had pushed for a sentence of

eight years in prison and presented the court with nearly 100 letters of support from family members, co-workers and even Muzzo’s priest.

The tragic accident, last fall, killed 65-year-old Gary Neville and his three grandchildren ranging in ages from two to nine years.

The children’s grandmother and great grandmother were seriously injured.

Muzzo had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood at the time of the

accident. He had just returned from a party in Florida

in the families private jet and picked up his car and drove instead of taking a cab or calling for help.

Muzzo’s sentence generated a lot of public reaction from across the country and even from overseas.

He can be out in just about three years for good behavior.

Muzzo had no prior criminal record. If Canada is serious about preventing car-

nage on our roads and destroying families, it has to have much tougher laws.

WorldWide problemsA worldwide survey was conducted by the

UN. The only question asked was: “Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey was a huge failure. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant. And in the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.

Lions helping city

Isn’t it nice to be able to drive down Brookdale Avenue these days, with unfettered access to the intersections? Aaaahhhh – life is good.

Hundreds of Grade 6 students will once again mass at the Cornwall Amroury this week to learn about the dangers of drug abuse. The 19th Racing Against Drugs (RAD) began Tuesday and runs until Friday. Congrats to local agencies who have helped make this event a success year over year.

Jason Sauve, who worked in nursing for years before transitioning to a full-time artist, provided ‘Tree of Hope’ to the chemo unit. The painting now hangs at the brand new Cornwall Community Hospital department. Great work, Jason.

From a reader: It looks like the Sunshine income people must be feeling ashamed of themselves, since they would like to cancel this list of people earning over $100,000 a year. Many people are now making over $300,000. They must be scared that the taxpayers that are only making $25,000 to $60,000 a year are pay-ing for these inflated wages. How can these people feel so good about themselves while making the rest of us feel worthless ?

Last year, over 800,000 passenger trips were provided by Cornwall Transit!

Cornwall’s best chefs have gone all out to create some unique meals for Restaurant Week. From April 5th to April 9th, select local restau-rants will offer guests a specially designed 3-course menu for $24 or $28. The fixed-price menu provides a unique opportunity for patrons to try different local restaurants via an attractive price point. Get out there and savour it!

With construction season just around the corner, the City of Cornwall is reminding motor-ists to exercise caution when driving past or through a construction zone. These areas require drivers to be especially cautious and attentive, from the heavy machinery to changes in road conditions during construction; these zones can be dangerous for drivers.

This year Kinsmen Pizza Party proceeds were also sliced up several ways to the Longue Sault Public School Spec Ops Program (a fitness and character development program), Koala Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Cornwall, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, and the family of Sean Cowan, an Eamer’s Corners Public School student battling leukemia.

Ontario Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell has postponed her visit to Cornwall. The lieutenant-governor was supposed to meet with members of city council and chiefs from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, as well as United Counties of S.D. & G. Warden Jamie MacDonald Tuesday. We hope she reschedules her visit soon.

Thought of the Week: Always hold your head up, but be careful to keep your nose at a friendly level.

City council met behind closed doors Wednesday evening to decide whether or not to green-light a plan to assume ownership of the harbour lands in Cornwall. City officials have recently returned from Toronto where they, along with counterparts from Akwesasne and Transport Canada, met to discuss divestiture of the federally-owned lands at the port of Cornwall. It’s high time the citizens of Cornwall and Akwesasne learn the specifics of this issue – too much has been kept under wraps.
