Summers on Beulah are so precious

and also so short. This past year is one of

our shortest ever, with the latest ice-out on

record and now the earliest first ice in No-

vember. Your board is working hard to

make the most of our short summers – and

this creative board has arranged to make

the summer calendar one week longer!

(Memorial Day is early, May 25th – and

Labor Day is late, Sept 7). In addition to

having the extra week for races and a

Wednesday cookout, Molly is working a

plan to extend Wednesday night cookouts

a few weeks past labor day.

Financially, 2014 is shaping up to be

another great year. Dick had us on a plan

to keep expenses low, and Hardy has

refined the numbers so not only

were we able to paint the club,

but we have approved a long overdue up-

grade of the kitchen floor and the dance

floor. Even with these non-forecasted

expenses, Hardy plans to make a sizable

deposit to our cash reserve fund. The re-

serve fund will become important moving

forward, because our ‘new’ club is not so

new anymore, and as it ages to 15years

different mechanical systems will need

repairs and upgrades. The exterior paint

color looks great, and right after the

Christmas party we are having the floors

replaced, carpeting cleaned – getting ready

for next season.

Your board continues to work hard on

planning for next year. Please keep your

great ideas coming, we are very open to

suggestions to improve our wonderful

club.

Another fall is upon us: leaves are

off the trees, piers are out, and boats

are stored. It’s almost a relief to have

less to do on the weekends, as Honey-

Do lists are finally tackled.

Of course the Board has been busy

planning next summer. Al Haeger

and I have been preparing a thorough

debriefing of sailors and judges as we

look to see where we are and where

we need to be to improve sailing on

Lake Beulah. Al and I will be sending

out a survey in the next couple of

weeks to all the adult sailors and

judges asking questions about training,

equipment, schedules, etc. We hope

you will all take the time to thoughtfully

answer our questions, as well as let us

know any other ideas you may have.

As we laid out the calendar for next

summer, one thing became quickly

clear: July is going to be a busy

month! The ILYA has honored us by

selecting Beulah as the regatta site for

not one, but two Inland events next

summer, both in the 2nd half of July.

We will be hosting the Opti Champion-

ship again this year, and also the C

Invitational. Our Board did not accept

both of these assignments without

some trepidation, knowing how much it

would tax our members to hold these

events, as well as the Sail Pink clinic in

the month of July. We recognized,

though, that Beulah is uniquely quali-

fied to host them because of our size

and our volunteer base, and that it has

become increasingly difficult for the

ILYA to find hosts for some of these

regattas. As a result, we are calling on

our members to help us run these re-

gattas. Please think about your avail-

ability in those last two weeks. Hosting

these regattas maintains our reputation

in the sailing community—and are darn

good money makers as well!

In the meantime, don’t forget our young

ladies sailing for the LBYC this winter.

Stephanie Roble and her team Epic

Racing are continuing to rocket up the

standings in Match Racing. Check out

their website at

www.epicmatchracing.com, and be

sure to hit the big green DONATE but-

ton if the spirit moves you! Stephanie

Hudson has

started a

late but very

aggressive

Olympic

campaign in

the Nacra

17. Word is

that this fleet is wide open for a US rep,

and she’s working very hard to be

aboard the chosen one. Her website is

www.odysseyracing.org (and her do-

nate button is navy blue!). Annie Hae-

ger also represents the LBYC and has

been working for a couple years now

with her crew Briana Provancha to win

a medal in Women’s 470 in Rio. They

have been all around the world, includ-

ing at a test event on the waters near

Rio, where they really shown. Their

website is www.teamhp470.com ,

where you will be able to read about

their adventures and/or donate.

Have a great winter, and happy holi-

days everyone!

House and Grounds Report by Frank Rappold The painting of the Yacht Club was completed on time. The painters had to work until dark the day be-fore John Porter and Molly's wedding, but they got it done and looking great for their wedding reception at the club. The blue awnings and the ropes for around the pillars are stored in the shed for the winter. They will be put in place in the spring. I would like to thank the people that helped with this project: The color committee included Carolyn Becker, Susan Brown, Judy Skotarzak, and Judy Smalley. Thanks also to Dennis Smalley for help with the contractors. The club looks terrific!

Thanks to all who came to Work Day 10-4

Winter seems to be here (a little too soon if you ask me!) and it is time for our last party of the year. Wendy Bitter (Joe) and her committee are working hard on the LBYC Christmas Party to be held December 13

th.

Toothpick’s Catering has planned a wonderful menu and the committee will be providing some delicious des-serts. The East Troy Choir will be return-

ing to help set a festive mood. More details are included here in the Main-sheet. Check your calendars and get your RSVP in to Brooke Brickler soon. You may also register on our website. Please also check your preliminary social assignments in this issue. You may always change or trade your as-signment but I thought that I would publish this list early for ease of

summer planning. See the list below. A star indicates the chairperson. If you need to make a change, please email me at [email protected]

Stephanie Roble is now ranked as 3rd in the World according to a recent article

in Scuttlebutt. This makes her the highest ranking woman’s match racer in the Western Hemisphere. A Danish sailor is ranked 1st in the world, and a Swedish gal is ranked 2nd by the ISAF. Photo right.

Congrats to mem-bers Mark and Maggie Smith of Florida who purchased the Anderson house on Upper Lake. They have been members for years but now hope to be here more often. We will love to know them better.

Steve Barth, our LBYC Secretary, has tried his hand at racing an MC after many years away from the tiller. He is doing fine. On Aug 31st he finish mid fleet! Hope-fully, he will race more often.

John Porter Wins the 37 Boat George Dorn Regatta by Al Haeger

JP Takes Title in Tie-Breaker! 37 MCs competed in the George Dorn Memorial Regatta on Beulah September 6-7. George Dorn was one of the founders of the MC fleet, and this regatta has continued to be strongly attended. A notable ex-ception this year was

Doug Dorn, who was traveling and had to miss the regatta named for his dad. 23 MCs were from Beulah, an impressive turnout in numbers, if not in overall performance. The 14 off-lake sailors gave us a run for the money, with 6 off-lake sailors in the top 10, and Greg Simon of Mendota seriously challenging for the win. It took our own John Porter a tie-breaker to win. In general, the Beulah C fleet (JP, Dave Porter, and Kent Haeger) preserved Beulah’s honor by finishing in the top ten, along with Milt Haeger.

Very tricky, with the Sun-day morning race dead flat at times. Top Master was Bruce Gallagher. Top Grandmaster was David Porter; top Mega-master - Tim Fredman. Top women - Vicki Clay-ton in overall 11th. Thanks to Rob Clayton and team for great PRO work, and the Wills/Kubicek/Riedl families and the many others for organizing and working the regatta.

B12 wins the Nan Norris Beulah Chal-lenge by Christine Porter Saturday morning, September 20th, brought big breezes as 33 C scows headed out onto Lake Beulah. After several starts, the fleet got off a good start to the first race of the Nan Norris Beulah Challenge. Kent Haeger got out to an early lead and kept it the entire race to win race one. As the breeze continued to build hitting a con-sistent 25 mph, the fleet had some amazing rides before the race committee decided to take the fleet in for lunch as they watched boats flip, and lose control. After a fantastic pulled pork lunch and some college football, the fleet got back on the water to complete two more races. The afternoon had medium breeze and George Kutschenreuter (grandson of Nan Norris) took race number two. The last race on Saturday had a guest co-skipper appear-ance as Joe Kutschenreuter took over the B-77 with Molly Forbes as a crew. Joe and Molly battled for race three and

in the final leeward mark rounding, took the lead and kept it to finish the race in first. The sailors went in for a deli-cious Mexican dinner. Sunday brought cold temperatures, rain, and big breezes. The race committee postponed to wait for the rain to pass and the conditions to get more favor-able. The fleet headed out for one last race in heavy, puffy breezy. Joe Kutschenreuter with Beth Kutschen-reuter (daughter of Nan Nor-ris) and Molly Forbes brought the last race home again with a bullet. The sailors came in to pack up their boats, watch awards, and watch the packer game. Will Norris (son of Nan Norris) presented the awards and said the regatta had the three nec-essary components of a great regatta. 1. A great club 2. Wind 3. Carnage Thank you to Katie and Shawn Murphy and their com-mittee and to the Lake Beulah Yacht Club members who do-nated and helped makes this event a success.

The old adage of "where does the time go" fits here. It's hard to believe it's already past the middle of No-vember! Sailboats, motorboats, and piers have been stored, leaves raked and the geese flown. I'm al-ready waiting for warm summer days to return. I'm excited to announce that the Sidestays' big summer event will be the Float Boat Tour of Homes. Our resourceful chairperson, Maryellen Heckman, reports she has three con-firmed homes. She is looking for a

fourth, so if you, or someone you know would like to have their home on the tour, contact Maryellen or Susan Brown. Many great volun-teers are working on this event ,so I'm sure it will prove to be a fun day floating on Lake Beulah. Details to come in Spring. Remember the Sidestays' Shoppe has a large selection of mer-chandise for your holiday shop-ping. The shop will be open at the LBYC Christmas party on Saturday Dec. 13th. Come shop!

Enjoy Thanksgiving and have the happiest holiday season!

Editor’s Note: The Holidays are approaching fast, and we are already seeing ice on the channel that leads to upper lake. Why do good summer times always pass so quickly? I guess that’s a good reason to look forward to next summer and more fun with boating, sailing and LBYC friends . This is our last edition of the Mainsheet for 2014.
