So far, on this Memorial Day week- end, we seem to be getting the “long days” part right, but what happened to the “warm” part? Makes you look fondly at parts of last winter. In hopes that summer-like weather will arrive soon (before the 5th of July), I will remind you that our Flat Point Clambake get together is scheduled for June 5 at noon. Bring a potluck dish and some libation. It’s one of those functions that allow you to do yard work in the morning and have fun with the club in the afternoon. This event is also where we start to put together the “North Cruise” which is our extended cruising event of the summer. If you’re thinking that this is the year you might take the boat for a week or longer voyage, then this is a fun group to cruise with. Come be part of the planning process. On the weekend of June 18-20, I’ll be hosting the Com- modore’s Cruise. This year we’re going to Port Browning on North Pender Island. It’s not too far away and it will be lots of fun. Hope to see you there. If you are having family and friends gather for the Fourth of July, you might consider having them help and participate in our parade entry. Contact Judy Welker if you’re interested. Have a great June! Dave

JUNE 2010

COMMODORE’ S CORNER

As I look across Fisherman Bay, I see that the bay is

filling up with boats in anticipation of the long warm

days of summer. So far, on this Memorial Day week-

end, we seem to be getting the “long days” part right,

but what happened to the “warm” part? Makes you

look fondly at parts of last winter.

In hopes that summer-like weather will arrive soon

(before the 5th of July), I will remind you that our Flat

Point Clambake get together is scheduled for June 5 at

noon. Bring a potluck dish and some libation. It’s one

of those functions that allow you to do yard work in the

morning and have fun with the club in the afternoon.

This event is also where we start to put together the

“North Cruise” which is our extended cruising event of

the summer. If you’re thinking that this is the year you

might take the boat for a week or longer voyage, then

this is a fun group to cruise with. Come be part of the

planning process.

On the weekend of June 18-20, I’ll be hosting the Com-

modore’s Cruise. This year we’re going to Port

Browning on North Pender Island. It’s not too far away

and it will be lots of fun. Hope to see you there.

If you are having family and friends gather for the

Fourth of July, you might consider having them help

and participate in our parade entry. Contact Judy

Welker if you’re interested.

Have a great June! Dave

OPENING DAY 2010

Attendees at the unofficial Friday night pre-function looked hopeful—

the weather was warm and sunny. (Lisa Cram, Karen Bistrin, Judy

Welker, Jonelle Johnson, Doug Cram, and Audrey Bordvick)

But by Saturday

morning, the appro-

priate attire was rain

gear and parkas like

OPENING DAY WEATHER provided ample wind for

sailing and some stiff competition for racing. Spectators on the Islander

docks were treated to the racing antics of LIYC crews Dave Welker, Russ

Johnson and Duane Bordvick in Breathless Mahoney, a 20’ Pyramid 660

and Bill White, Rod Duncan, and Jim Lett in Williwaw, a 30’ Etchelles. As

you can see, both boats were

neck and neck for most of the

afternoon.
