Presidential thoughts Jim Widrig, President

or Rocky Mountain Region and PCA National, June is always a very busy month for events. We started out the month with the member social at Stevinson Imports. Thanks to Stevinson Imports for hosting this months’ social. The Councours d’Elegance charity car show at Arapahoe Community College was next, and we received a very nice thank you from Ability

Connection Colorado for RMR’s participation and charitable donation. Overall, the car show raised $143,780 to support Ability Connection Colorado’s Creative Options for Early Childhood Education. Thanks again to Jerry Medina and the RMR members who pitched in for their volunteer work and representation of RMR in this event! David Schmidt’s 2nd (annual) RMR Spring Gimmick Rally raised over $1500 to benefit the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keensburg, Colorado. Thanks to David and to the RMR members who participated and supported this event. A special thanks as well to Autoworks Colorado for your support!

Two fantastic track events were held in June for RMR. The Ladies’ Day DE, “Chicks on Slicks,” chaired by Lisa Hunsicker and Karen Harrison, and the Slow—Fast—Half-Fast HPDE, chaired by Jim Thorburn and Brian Sulley. Thanks to the event chairs, to all of the event volunteers, and to the RMR-AMR Instructors who made both of these events a huge success. Closing out the month of June were the Steamboat Springs Tour (Thanks to Erik Behrendsen and volunteers) and the Porsche Parade and 60th Anniversary Celebration in French Lick, Indiana.

In July and August the region will have “Cooking on the Plains” HPDE at High Plains Raceway, and then we have the PCA Rocky Mountain Region 23rd Porsche Club Race and Solo DE, the “Rocky Mountain Thunder PCA Club Race and HPDE,” August 15-16, 2015. Registration for both of these HPDE events is now open. On August 23, 2015 the Triple Bypass Tour to Breckenridge takes place. Closing out the month on Saturday, August 26, 2015 will be our first Tire Rack Street Survival School. The Rocky Mountain Region PCA, with the participation of the Rocky Mountain Chapter BMW CCA, will host the event on August 29, 2015 at the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden. Registration is limited to 30 participants for this event. It is specifically for

drivers of the age of 15 to 21 years of age and is a fantastic way for new drivers to learn accident avoidance skills in a safe environment. Look this month in HighGear and on-line for articles and event pictures and for planning out events to participate in for future months.

As you may now know from events in June, the HPR food vendor has ceased operations, and High Plains Raceway is looking for both short-term and long-term solutions. In the interim, you should be aware of this food situation and plan accordingly. RMR and the event chairs are working with HPR to make sure we have some form of concessions for our events and will be providing information in event communications. Also for HPR, you may also see that the entry road to HPR is paved (or will be?), and recycled asphalt is being spread on the access road to the spectator viewing area. Other track improvements under way and near complete are the installation of track video cameras and LED panels to assist control and to alert drivers or situations on track.

As mentioned earlier this year, the RMR Board is working on plans for an RMR Year-end Celebration in the fall. This event is envisioned as an informal family event where you can bring the kids, friends, and Porsche cars and celebrate an afternoon with food and entertainment at a unique Colorado location. The event is also in place of the traditional RMR Holiday Party. We have secured a venue, the TEV Edelweiss Pavilion and festival grounds in Morrison, CO, and a date, September 19, 2015, so please “Save the Date.” More on this event in the next couple of months as the details are worked out.

If you have questions or suggestions or would like to volunteer, please contact an RMR Board or Committee Member. We can always use volunteers to help with putting on events and to take on additional special projects and added activities. We will also be forming the nominating committee and looking for committee chairs for 2016 in the next couple of months. You can always drop me (or any other board member) an email or let me know at an event if you would like to get more involved in the RMR Community!

Be sure to check out the calendar each month in HighGear and the latest updates on the RMR webpage, the FaceBook RMR event calendar, and e-mail announcements.

t’s not often you have the chance to learn directly from the pros. I recently had such an opportunity. Randy Pobst is racing the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year and was testing in Pueblo. John Kerr remembered how much I loved to go fast from

our time together; I was his first instructor as we drove his Cayenne around PPIR. He was testing his new spec Boxster at PMP, and Pikes Peak Racing prepared his and Randy’s cars so he and Randy got to chatting. John and Randy agreed to have a go at the recent grass roots series endurance race at High Plains Raceway. I asked Randy for his impressions:

Spec Boxster Enduro Experienceby Randy PobstAt the WRL enduro at High Plains Raceway, I got a

stint in the Spec Boxster newly built by Pikes Peak Racing. Crew chief Travis Smith handled the project, and I got a few test laps in a couple weeks before at Pueblo, finding rather aggressive trailing-throttle oversteer. I nearly spun it on my first lap, with co-owner John Kerr on board. We decided to try turning up the single-adjustable front shocks, hoping rebound would increase more than compression, slowing the weight transfer and stabilizing the Porsche. It worked, finishing off a nicely balanced chassis. Stability is important when driving 12 hours.

After years of pro sports cars, I like events like this because of their “amateur” nature. That’s a French word, meaning for the love of it. WRL is very accessible, relatively inexpensive, and way less bloodthirsty than pro stuff. In pro racing, it is common to see drivers way over their heads, taking great risks and taking out competitors, with little concern for their mutual massive investments. I’ve grown a bit tired of this irresponsible

I behavior, grown from a self-centered culture that accepts and even celebrates a knife-in-the-back racing style.

In my writings, I have often trained and guided my readers to learn what constitutes a successful pass, and apply it, to the benefit of racers everywhere.

Our team was made up of a group of friends, sharing costs and driving duties, and adding to the enjoyment, another positive of these long, long races. Grab a couple buddies and try it yourself. Even the pit stops are challenging and fun.

Your HighGear editor was lucky enough to drive a long stint and take the checkered flag in the same awesome little Boxster. It has a great data acquisition set-up in it. It will be educational, to say the least, to compare my race laps against those of John Kerr and Dave Roy, co-owners and specB racers, Travis Smith, mechanic, Dave Bayassee, a 944spec racer, and Randy Pobst, a true professional and great human being.

Thank you guys for the ultimate experience!

Selfies welcome! You have found the greatest group of car nuts on the planet. Our monthly meetings are loaded with food, beverages, networking with like-minded Porsche People and much technical and social camaraderie. Some of the venues we’ve been to before, and some places are new to us. All are interesting and fun.

It’s all about the people (yeah, right!). We all share the love of anything Porsche-related. From real racing or just driving fast in a controlled environment like on the track or autocross, to meeting a mechanic or owner of a car just like yours for a chat about problems and solutions, to washing and waxing in preparation for the weekend tour or car show, you’ve found the most precious resource for the care and feeding of your car and hobby (addiction).

Show us your car! Let’s see your smiling face! How

about a photo of your “garage queen’s” throne room! Share photos from your favorite drive; share the story of your hunt for the favorite car; share the triumph of your first rebuild. That story and those pictures are worth immortalizing in print.

We’ve all been there; maybe you’re experiencing the newness of that first special car. Perhaps you’re climbing the ranks in a competitive series of races. Have you found the perfect wash and wax routine to deliver the trophy? (Some secrets are worth keeping.) The point is that the club’s members are its true strength. Your membership is your key to unlocking the wealth of knowledge and friendship the club represents. The membership socials are the first step to a deeper understanding, a deeper relationship with your vehicle. You know that Porsche has won many awards for racing and technical and aesthetic design. Come share the experience!

9JULY 2015

Featured Event

The 41st consecutive Fiesta New Mexico was held May 21-May 24, 2015, converging in Santa Fe, N.M. at The Lodge at Santa Fe. With 60 Porsches and 75+ attendees, PCAers from New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho, and California began the Fiesta with a “Welcome Social,” registration, and a good night’s sleep under a gentle rain.

A contingency of RM356/RMR-PCAers formed a congenial sub-group, with many newer Porsche owners expressing amazement at seeing the vintage cars keep pace over the mountainous terrain. As luck would have it, the annual Red River Motorcycle Rally of 30,000 riders was also taking place, conveniently diverting the attention of sheriffs and state troopers away from us!

Our hosts, Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach, went all-out planning this memorable weekend that included a People’s Choice Concours, a daily cocktail hour, a Mexican Fiesta Night, and accommodations well suited to handle our group.

Friday morning dawned with snow-capped peaks as our first drive of the day took us up Santa Fe Ski Basin, a narrow, twisting road with panoramic views of Santa Fe. Doughnuts and coffee awaited the drivers, along with the chance to fawn over the cars that included two 1966 911s, half a dozen 356s, a Boxster Spyder with the bikini top in place, and a spanking new Macan.

We returned to town and queued up for a spectacular drive and Fiesta Rally to Taos over the historic “High Road.” Bill Oaks and Bob Blackwell, both seasoned

Tales from PCA Roadrunner Region’s

“Fiesta New Mexico” “Fiesta New Mexico”drive-planners, were meticulously organized, and the drives flowed with ease.

Our headquarters in Taos was The Sage Brush Inn, built in 1929 with all the charm you’d expect at a historic lodge. The Inn included a painted portrait of the original owner, a stately, bespectacled woman overseeing the rustic beam and stucco bar and lounge. Huge cottonwood trees adorned a tranquil courtyard, with a patio area and dining room equipped to handle our large group. The Inn was gracious enough to provide us with cordoned-off, secured parking.

Friday evening featured a lovely cocktail hour and prize giveaway, including a variety of New Mexico wines. PCA ladies were pleasantly surprised to

find locally made animal-charm necklaces and earrings in their Goodies Bags, a welcomed change from the usual fare. Many of us wore them for the entire weekend, signaling our sisterhood when passing one another, along

with our women-sized Fiesta shirts. Thank you Roadrunner ladies for your thoughtfulness!

A Western-swing band played at the Inn both Friday and Saturday nights, and many locals turned out to show us their moves. One local related that the State motto ought to be, “The Land of Entrapment,” as people can’t wait to get there but find it hard to make enough money to leave. I tipped well.

Saturday featured the People’s Choice Concours, held at the charming Taos Country Club, organized by Dave Stinchcomb and Joe Alders, and covered by our PCA Zone 9 Rep and N.M. local, Liz Shaw.

Fiesta, continuedBeginning at the laidback hour of 11:00 A.M., and

framed by a backdrop of Taos Mtn. behind the staged cars, a delightful Country Western band entertained the folks as PCAers meandered about socializing and enjoying a choice of three entrees at the well appointed luncheon buffet. With the exception of some strong afternoon winds, the weather was perfect New Mexico. The Concours was featured in “The Taos News.”

That evening at the Inn, a Mexican banquet was held, complete with a piñata. Our sub-group of RM356ers

wandered into Taos and enjoyed a scrumptious dinner at Lambert’s of Taos. We laughed, told stories, and relished the cameraderie as we window-shopped while sauntering back to our cars.

Sunday’s early drive set out for Angel Fire Ski Resort along Route 68, a 30-mile scenic drive passing through remote meadow towns surrounded by distant peaks. While we were cruising through one town, a pack of local dogs decided to play “chicken” with the parade of Porsches, with one Chihuahua-mix barely missing being

squashed under the wheels of RMR-PCAer Dale Thero’s car. At least three more dogs bolted towards the rear of the stream of cars and are likely still asking themselves, “Whoa, who were those guys?”

Other Sunday options: RMR-PCAer Tom Conway chose to hang back from the group and took in a soak and a massage at the upscale Taos Spa. He was likely envied by some of the guys shanghaied into waiting outside trendy Taos boutiques while the wife tried on accessories. Bob and Kathy Little chose to visit the Taos-Pueblo community, a village continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years.

The afternoon drive headed northwest out of Taos along Route 285 and crossed the Rio Grande Gorge. The group visited the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and “Earthship Biotecture,” a sustainable-living “Great World Community” comprising 347 acres of semi-subterranean homes touted as the world’s largest self-sufficient residential development. It was quite a site!

The Concours Banquet was held Sunday evening at The Sage Brush, with an informative talk given by Leonard Turnbeaugh, owner of Shasta Design & NeuTek Cams of Tahoe, CA. Leonard’s expertise is 356 performance, and

he’s raced on many notable tracks including Le Mans, Spa, and Laguna Seca. Very interesting guy. Thank you, Leonard.

A raffle was held, raising $1,100.00 to benefit a Santa Fe animal rescue and shelter, and door-prizes were abundant. Again, the PCA ladies were delighted with a fine offering of Nambé home décor pieces produced by native Nambé, N.M. artisans since 1951. I coveted one item in particular, a serving tray that was elatedly won by RMR-PCAer Mary Ann Shing. As luck would have it, my husband Tom’s number was drawn and we scored on an exquisite pair of Nambé candlesticks. In addition, Dennis and Janet Callan’s pristine champagne yellow 356 earned them a People’s Choice plaque.

The Fiesta over, the RMR-PCA/RM356ers rallied back to Colorado via Route 287 through Buena Vista, CO, stopping for lunch at a lively brew pub along the banks of the Arkansas River. With Bob Little leading and Michael Shing driving “sweeper” we continued on, enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks. We parted ways at the junction of C-470 with heartfelt honks and waves. Many thanks to the PCA Roadrunner Region for hosting this 41st annual weekend!

Breakfast ClubM ay

German Restaurant TripStory by Tom Radow

Picture a parking lot on a hazy Sunday morning with more than 45 Porsches, including 356s and just about every generation 911, including a new GT3 RS next to a new GT2 RS. Sprinkled in are Boxsters, Caymans, and 944s. There are over 75 signatures on the waiver forms, not one orange cone or a single skid mark, and yet everyone is smiling.

That was the Rocky Mountain Region (RMR) and the Porsche Breakfast Club (PBC) getting ready to caravan from our monthly meeting place in Denver to a German restaurant in Colorado Springs. Edelweiss Restaurant has great food, and they gave our group exclusive use of the beer garden. When the forecast called for rain, our leader Erik Behrendsen secured the downstairs dining hall for our exclusive use.

Sure, we could have just piled into a few minivans and hopped on the highway for a boring drive 70 miles south. But we didn’t! When Erik is not organizing social functions for PCA and PBC, he runs Exotic Drives. We

supplied the exotic cars and Erik supplied the exotic route with curves, elevation changes, breathtaking views, etc.

We passed many farms, including a llama farm. Many times someone said, “Look at that house up on top of that hill!” This was usually followed by one of us questioning how they got the materials up there to build it, and what it’s like driving down to civilization when it snows. A small price to pay for the views of the Rockies or Pikes Peak every room probably has.

This is an annual trip for PCA & PBC. Each year we take a different route. That makes the drive fun, but the people make the day! Put the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend on your calendar and plan on joining us next year.

And did they ever! This year’s Ladies’ Day was the largest ever, with a record-setting 40 new drivers in a field of 63 participants. One for the “herstory” books! The weather cooperated beautifully. Given the unprecedented amounts of rain we’ve had this spring, we were pleased to have gorgeous weather for our event.

What an interesting and enthusiastic group of women in attendance, one of whom was a wonderful woman named Gerry, 75 years young and checking this off her bucket list! As Mike Pappas summed up her participation in her son’s 1989 Camaro IROC-Z, “She really hauled the mail in that car.” She was an inspiration to us all! We also had a participant who showed up in her “rental” Maserati! She had reserved a Mustang through Budget Rent a Car, but there were unexpected issues around that rental. She was gracious about the inconveniences when offered a Maserati instead! Apparently the rental agent told her we don’t care what you do with it and told her to have fun. Needless to say, she opted for the insurance!

Another interesting attendee had us perplexed as to what category to put “her” in. Art “Caitlyn” Rancis decided to stick with instruction, then proceeded to teach his student heel-and-toeing in stilettos! He seemed to navigate walking in heels with suspicious ease!

Based on the smiles that were a constant throughout the day, all participants seemed to enjoy themselves, including the instructors and volunteers. Feedback from them was nothing but positive. Dale Hartzell summarized what was rewarding to him as an instructor. He explained that these women came into the event excited and slightly bewildered, and they had very little idea of what to do. Then to see their skill

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!Fun!levels and confidence grow in such a short period of time, in his estimation, was very gratifying. Based on feedback from others, this viewpoint is probably shared by most.

There are a number of people without whom we would be unable to host a successful event such as this. Our sponsor list this year was extensive and included Dan Fead of Fuller/Sotheby’s Realty, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker of Ravalla Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics, Littleton Hospital, Prestige Imports, Wine Country Motor Sports and Women’s Edition Magazine. This was our first year having a “technical” sponsor, who were Knights in Shining Armor, disguised as 3zero3 Motorsports:

Scott Simpson and Max Gerson. These men were worth their weight in gold! All day long they could be found milling around the paddock checking on vehicles and tending to various issues to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. The women deeply appreciated their services, and PCA was beyond grateful for their presence and service.

A big “Thank you!” for all involved in Chicks on Slicks Ladies’ Day 2015! The number of volunteers for this event was enormous, and you each should be proud of your responsibility for the smiles you witnessed and to the memories you helped create. You should also be proud of having raised $1350 in charitable donations benefitting the Families of Fallen Officers. This was a great year, and we look forward to seeing you all again at Ladies’ Day 2016!

In the zone Liz Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative

ello Zone 9ers,During the last two weekends in May,

I was able to attend Roadrunner Region’s Fiesta New Mexico and Intermountain Region’s Amazing Rally. The socializing

with Fiesta started on Thursday night at The Lodge, north of Santa Fe, and it was great to see old friends and meet new Fiesta attendees. Then the next morning, many of the attendees met for a drive-out to the Santa Fe Ski Basin. I couldn’t go because I had to work, but I joined everyone for the gimmick rally/drive-out to Taos. We took the High Road, and with all the recent rains, the countryside was green and beautiful. Live mariachi music and special “Porsche Margaritas” – what could be better for a Welcome Reception?

The next morning, everyone cleaned their cars and got them ready for the concours at the Taos Country Club. I had never been to that area outside of Taos, and the homes and views were spectacular. Fiesta Chairs Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach arranged for live music, and the food was delicious. Joe Almers and his team did a great job of placing the cars, which made for perfect pictures every time.

On Sunday, there was a drive-out to Angel Fire, and we got the chance to see more of the beautiful forests and meadows. Lunch was at Zeb’s and they did an outstanding job of feeding about 40 hungry tourists! After getting back to Taos from that drive-out, many Fiesta attendees joined Bob Blackwell on a tour to the

H Earthship Community, which is a collection of homes that were built with recycled materials. The goal of this community is to “live without polluting and without depleting our resources …”

That night, we had the Awards Banquet, and the special guest speaker was Leonard Turnbeaugh, an accomplished 356 racer from northern Nevada. Leonard regaled us with stories of the big tracks that he’s raced at, and he described some of the parts that his company, Neutekcams, designs and builds: pistons and cams.

Hats off to Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach and their team for creating and running a very fun Fiesta and for raising a lot of money for the Watermelon Ranch.

The weekend after Fiesta, I participated in Intermountain Region’s 6th Annual Amazing Rally, and it was a lot of fun. My mom was my navigator, and although we had some challenges, we appreciated the areas where the rally took us. We met at a 356 restoration shop south of Salt Lake City, Morris Brothers Motorsports, and then officially started the rally at Ken Garff Porsche in Lehi, UT. After the rally, we were joined by many other Intermountain Region members for a social at the dealership. There was a silent auction, and lots of door prizes were handed out. Also as part of this rally, there was a fundraiser for Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Good job, Intermountain Region!

Parade is happening so I’ll see lots of you in French Lick, Indiana!

Forced to force it!By Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)

Tech talk

Whether the auto makers admit it or not, they have all been forced to force it!

Forced air induction (turbocharging) is now being (tacitly) forced on all automobile manufacturers, Porsche included.

There is no doubt that internal combustion engines have become much more efficient year after year and decade after decade, burning much less fuel per miles traveled, producing more power and torque, and emitting less carbon dioxide, and that’s a good thing.

It’s the natural progression of things with technical development and sensible regulation and enforcement.

But under the PC “saving the environment” umbrella, governments are requiring car makers to burn much less fuel in their engines so they can meet the ever more stringent and sometimes arbitrary MPG requirements year after year. As we’ve said before, it’s a game they play and have been playing for some time now and that’s not a good thing. Let me explain ...

The only way to emit less carbon dioxide is to burn less fuel, period.

The stoichiometric point, the ideal ratio of air and gasoline in an internal combustion engine, requires 14.7 grams of air to completely burn 1 gram of gasoline. It’s the job of your car’s computer (DME) to measure the amount of air the engine inhales via the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) and then provide precisely the correct amount of fuel at the stoichiometric ratio of 14.7 to 1.

Car makers know that government fuel-economy tests, especially those outside the USA, approximate the driving style of a heavily sedated octogenarian great-grandmother. Since the engine is rarely taxed, the turbo doesn’t spool up, so no extra fuel is used and the MPG numbers get to meet or best the environmental regulations. But purposely driving slowly enough to keep the turbo from generating boost defeats the point of having a turbocharger in the first place. Sadly, out in the real world, riding that big wave of boosted midrange torque means burning extra fuel - and creating even more CO2. So much for reducing emissions.

Like I said, it’s a game!

So, the inevitable worst case scenario has happened for real Porsche lovers and enthusiasts.

Dr. Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche’s head of R&D, has repeatedly stated in several interviews with television and car magazines that both the Boxster and the Cayman for model year 2016 will have turbo charged flat-4 engines instead of the normally aspirated flat-6 power plants they’ve had since their inception. Furthermore, Dr. Hatz has refused to comment if upscaled version of the two models would retain the naturally aspirated flat-6.

The last time Porsche offered a four-cylinder turbocharged engine in one of their sports car was over 20 years ago in the 1989 944 (951) Turbo S and the 1994 968 Turbo S.

There have been many optimistic rumors about keeping both power plants, but the way we see it, offering several turbo flat-4s and several normally aspirated flat-6 engines on entry-level models isn’t efficient enough in terms of costs, which is why the force-fed flat-4 may eventually be offered as an exclusive engine option throughout the majority of the Porsche sports car line.

These numbers look good, but I’m pretty bummed about the whole thing.

In my book “there’s no replacement for displacement.”

A good friend of mine from Toronto likes to say that there’s no better sound to listen to while driving your Porsche than the “symphony in flat-6” that your car performs, and you get to be the conductor of the symphony!

I wholeheartedly agree with him. I’t sure isn’t going to be the same intoxicating music with a little flat-4 and its turbo waste gates popping off. Have you been to a Formula1 race recently? My point exactly!

This would be the perfect time to visit your Porsche dealer and snatch one the last 2015 Boxsters and/or Caymans which still sport the flat-6 engine.

Maybe they’ll start to appreciate in value, just like the 993 and all of the other “real Porsches”!

Who knew?

The new engines will feature turbochargers and direct injection, and will produce impressive power figures for their size. Horsepower reportedly ranges from 210 HP for a 1.6-liter, to 286 HP for a 2.0-liter, with the range topped-off by a 360 HP 2.5L engine. The 2.0L and 2.5L will produce 295 lb-ft and 347 lb-ft of torque, respectively. The 2016 Boxster and Cayman will be the first models to use the new 2.0L and 2.5L flat-4 engines.

Happy Porsche-ing!

So, the inevitable worst case scenah d f l P h l

The Rocky Mountain Region PCA, with the participation of the Rocky Mountain Chapter BMW CCA, will host a Tire Rack Street Survival School on August 29, 2015 at the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden. The Tire Rack Street Survival program provides teenage drivers with a hands-on driving experience in real-world situations. Teens learn the handling limits of their daily driver and how to control their car at those limits. The Tire Rack Street Survival School goes beyond required driver education to give teens the driving tools and hands-on experience to become safer, smarter drivers.

For those unfamiliar with the program, it is a fantastic way for new drivers to learn accident avoidance skills in a safe environment. There are braking exercises, slalom courses, emergency lane change exercises, and a skid pad for learning how to manage understeer and oversteer.

There will only be 30 student slots, and the cost for the full day including lunch is only $75. Each teen will drive his or her own (or family) car and will have an in-car instructor for every exercise. We expect the school to sell out quickly. If you have teen drivers in your family, you should register them soon! Please also recommend the program to friends and co-workers with teen drivers. This is not just another driver education class. It’s not unusual for parents to come asking how they can get similar training. The kids will have a blast!

For more information about Street Survival or to register a student, visit http://www.streetsurvival.org.

In addition to looking for students, the school needs the following from our membership:1. Qualified Coaches: You don’t need to be a DE instructor, but you should at least have the skills to run in an

advanced DE run group or a few years of autocrossing experience and the ability to calmly communicate succinctly from the passenger seat, while someone else is behind the wheel. In addition, all coaches are required to take an online tutorial from the Street Survival School Program and register with the program. It is free and takes about 1.5 hours. Here is a link to the tutorial: http://www.thelhtgroup.com/LHTClients/Tire_Rack/Live_Courses/Street_Survival_HTML/html/index.html

2. Registration/Day of Event Volunteers: We need six people to help with registration on the day of the event and help throughout the day with logistics.

3. Classroom instructor: We are looking for a younger club member (someone with whom the students will relate better than the two of us) to understudy the StreetSurvival.org staff in the classroom segment and then lead the classroom instruction in subsequent years. If you are pre-40’s, enjoy making presentations and/or have teaching experience, please contact us.

4. If you have any media contacts whom we could approach to help promote the school, please send them to Doug Bartlett [email protected] and/or Michael Rosen [email protected].

5. We need two gasoline- or battery-powered leaf blowers. If you have one we can borrow for the day, please email Doug Bartlett [email protected] and/or Michael Rosen [email protected].

Instructors and volunteers are requested to register with RMR PCA via MotorsportReg.com at http://msreg.com/ColoradoSS2015.

I get around Danielle Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist

h sure, we all do it at car shows: ogle perfectly restored examples of rides we remember from way back when. We tell nobody in particular, glassy-eyed, that we once had one of these. And on comes a fl ood of memories, good and

bad, all from that murky past. It’s kinda like running into an old romantic love

interest, and not knowing what to say. In the background, you can hear “Take Good Care of My Baby,” or maybe “Still Crazy After All These Years.” Remember the opening line? “I met my old lover on the street last night ...”

But this was different. Here I was, at the annual big show of the season. No,

I wasn’t showing my 911SC. Too busy with life. But that was okay, because the Porsches were all up front this year, not off in some inconspicuous corner of the great lawn. Lots of Porsches.

I was ooing and aahing, taking in the scene … and, boom, out of the blue, whoa, I stopped in my tracks. There it was. My ’03 Carrera Targa. Silver, Boxster red interior. My car. A car I had actually owned, from new.

I made a beeline for it. And I started checking it out. Sure enough, there was my PCA 15-year member sticker. The Porsche sport exhaust. I looked inside. There were the chrome trim rings that I had installed on the instrument cluster.

I read the description on the windshield. Yes, the M030 sport suspension. Lowered. Porsche

sport shifter. It looked great. Spotless. Then came the memories, as I said, not of some

likeness, not of some facsimile, but of … this car. I started mumbling, to nobody in particular, about how I didn’t know if I’d like the color of the full leather interior, and how I got used to it very quickly.

I kept on talking. About how it was very cool to hear and see raindrops hitting the glass roof. How, when you retracted the roof, it acted like a giant rear window dimmer, for the headlights of following cars.

Some guy was staring at me. I didn’t care. I told him how this was the only 911 where the rear window was actually a hatch, because it opened up, which was great for fitting in golf clubs or luggage or anything else.

He asked me the words … why did I sell it?I kept on … I told him, because it was coming off

warranty, and I was nervous. My only incident was when a bolt had broken, and it had pegged the temperature gauge.

But I caught it, I told him, just in time. I switched off the ignition and just rolled to the side of the road, to be flatbedded back to the dealer. They had to order a new bolt from Germany. But they reported no damage.

And with that, I stopped. I turned away. It was time.Next, I ran into the couple who had bought my next

ride, an ’06 Boxster S. Really. What, I thought, is going on today?

My car was dark blue, gray top and interior. With an AWE exhaust and B & M shifter, which I thought were both superior to the Porsche factory upgrades.

The last time I saw the S, the couple had detailed it to a fine luster. So I asked them, did they bring it to the show, for the concours competition?

No, they said. They sold it. After an accident.I was stunned. I felt like a best friend had died. But they went on. They said it wasn’t their fault.

They were heartbroken, and decided it was an omen that it was time for a change.

They told me the new buyer made one request—that they swap out the AWE exhaust for the stock unit.

What?Yes, they said. And they did.I shook my head. It was as if I, myself, had been

accosted. This exhaust had a note that demanded that you drive with the windows all the way down, top down, all year long, looking for tunnels where you could downshift and hum along. It had no resonance. Just pure poetry.

And there was special significance. This was the car in which I nearly met my maker, driving up and over Vail Pass and on up to the Eisenhower Tunnel, in early April, in a snowstorm that weathermen had neglected to mention, on summer performance tires.

Was it Thomas Wolfe who said you can’t go home again? Well, I would add you can’t drive home again, either.

Oh, I walked around. I admired the Ferraris. A Fraser Nash. They had five or so McLarens. A real life Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.

It didn’t matter. As I walked out the gate, another Paul Simon song was running through my brain—“She Moves On.”

Gimmick Rally

By David Schmidt, ChairPhotos by Mike Pappas unless otherwise noted

On the warm, sunny morning of June 13th, 22 Porsches arrived at Stevinson Imports on South Broadway in Littleton to take part in the RMR-PCA Spring Gimmick Rally.

Chaired by David and Jody Schmidt, the rally also served as a fundraiser for The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, CO.

After registering and devouring some coffee and bagels kindly provided by the Porsche dealership, all drivers met to go over the mandatory safety items, but also to get an overview of the rally and establish some guidelines. Several of the participants attended last year’s RMR Gimmick Rally that the Schmidts put together and thought they had an inside track. Oh, how wrong they were ...

The ralliers, randomly chosen by drawing tickets, were launched out in groups of four every four minutes; each headed in one of four different directions. The route covered approximately 50 miles around Chatfield Reservoir and the C470 corridor. Participants were given packets with directional clue sheets that guided them, after some deciphering, to their five rally stopping points. Each rally point had a volunteer waiting with a visual trivia question, a deck of cards for the poker run portion of the rally, and an activity that was designed to make them feel like a kid again.

Hanksville Hot Rods was one of the rally stops, where the Porsche-folk were required to color a cartoon of a 911 in three minutes while blindfolded as their partner attempted

to guide them only verbally with the correct crayon coloring the correct spot on the illustration. Ferrari of Denver was another rally stop, and the activity there mandated that each couple had to find the most expensive car on the lot (a 2016 Bentley Mulsanne Speed was the correct answer with a sticker price just shy of $397,000). Mirage Games, an arcade on the intersection of Wadsworth and Coal Mine, was ready and waiting with a pinball game set aside just for the ralliers to take turns trying to get the highest score of the day. Autoworks Colorado was set up with a Word Find puzzle, with each couple having only two minutes to find as many of the 16 Porsche-related words as they could. Finally, The Golf Club at Ravenna in Roxborough had RMR-PCA Club Secretary and photographer extraordinaire Mike Pappas stationed there with a bizarre collection of apparel and accoutrements and a requirement to don as many of the funky items as possible and pose for a goofy photo (visit the RMR-PCA Facebook page to check out all of these hilarious images!).

The Rock Wood-Fired Kitchen in Highlands Ranch was the ending destination, and the site for the awards and door prize giveaways. Some lucky participants also received special parking that was reserved for the seven favorite Porsches as chosen by Justin Underwood, Sales Associate at Stevinson Imports, who snuck out during the drivers’ meeting armed with seven sparkly smiley face stickers that he attached to the windshields of his preferred vehicles that day.

New RMR-PCA member Steve Walton had a great time at the rally with his wife Katy and their 2006 Cayman S. “The Gimmick Rally was similar to the ‘Mystery Rallies’ that we had participated in with the Ferrari Club when we were members in that group,” Steve said. “The Ferrari rallies had individuals’ cars being sent out with five-minute spacing and all cars going on the exact same route. Often cars would catch up to others, which would, of course, take some of the challenge out the route-finding and answering the 50-plus trivia questions they had. I much prefer the approach with the RMR rally in sending cars off four at a time and on different routes. We also liked that there was plenty of ‘path crossing’ with other participants (always a good thing) without giving away the route.”

The Waltons agreed that without a doubt they would be at the next RMR rally. “We were surprised by and enjoyed all the things we had to do at the rally stops, and it was also nice to see and learn about the two businesses (Hanksville Hotrods and Autoworks Colorado) that provide services for

Porsche owners that we didn’t know about. We truly enjoyed the pre- and post-rally opportunities to meet and chat with other PCA members. Everyone was very nice and welcoming to us new members.”

The event started at 9:00 a.m. and ended at 2:00 p.m. with smiling faces on all the happy competitors and over $1500 raised for the charity. The weather was perfect, the stops were fantastic, and the restaurant really took good care of the club participants (some from as far away as Cheyenne, WY). Door prizes were plentiful (including a $300 gift certificate from Exotic Drives of Denver, a $160 Mark Webber-designed Porsche jacket, a $70 bottle of Laws Whiskey, several custom-made antiqued Porsche signs, and more), and prize packages were robust for the lucky first and second place winners in the rally and the poker run from the 2015 RMR-PCA Spring Gimmick Rally. August 27 - 30

August 27-30 of this year, we have an event planned unlike any in recent memory.

We begin on Thursday, August 27th when you drive up to beautiful Snowmass for a welcome reception at our base of operations, the gorgeous Crestwood in Snowmass.

Friday, we will head to Aspen Motorsports Park (formerly known as Woody Creek Raceway).

Saturday, we return to the track for our last day there, followed by a wonderful farewell banquet that night in Snowmass Village. Sunday is free with a leisurely drive home.

This weekend isn’t just for track junkies, however. For everyone else, there is a huge variety of things to enjoy. From great shopping to the Glenwood Hot Springs. The list goes on and on.

Did I mention that this event is deluxe all the way?

We expect this event to sell out very quickly, so plan on signing up when registration opens, or you might be disappointed.

Note – cars louder than 55dB from more than 10ft away will not be permitted to run. Space for trailers is also severely limited so sign up early.

room selection (incl. 3 nights condo lodging, welcome reception, goodies, etc.).

Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.

DRIVING EVENTS

NON-DRIVING EVENTS

Tour

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically offers several. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.

RallyA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specifi ed by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche

Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

Autocross (AX)

An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defi ned by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

Driver Education (DE)A driver education event provides a safe,

controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some

Membership SocialMembership socials provide an opportunity

to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the fi rst Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to

the Committee Chair or a Board member!

Tech SessionA tech session is just what it sounds like–a

session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.Concours d’Elegance

What we do

DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

Club RaceA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event.

A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefi ting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.
