Contributors: Karen Carlson, Dorsey DrummondSo far this year we as GI Techs and Nurses have had the opportunity to attend two fabulous educational events. The CSGNA hosted the first event. It was the Delmarva Seminar in Annapolis, MD in the beginning of March. The entire seminar was quite informative and lively. Among the many talks at this seminar were some very interesting approaches for GERD and for gastric bypass.A history lesson about the origin of the Red Cross and its inception in American was presented. Who better to present this than the person who was intimately involved with the process from the start? Yes, it was none other than Clara Barton herself!

After extending a compliment to Clara she did acquiesce, Yes, I do clean up nicely for beingdead a 102 years. It wasnt all business. There was the time for camaraderie and play (raffles) and visits with ourgreat vendors who offered tips on how to use their products more efficiently.

  • Karen Carlson, President-CSGNA, attended the SGNA 41st Annual Conference in Nashville, TN. Her contribution to this edition of the newsletter is profound. The subject matter is one of critical importance. It is seldom talked about in the work place; it is taken for granted that EVERYONE KNOWS, but sadly, few of us probably do know what to do when this crisis suddenly raises its head. It is a Joint Commission Talking Point.

    F I R E !!!!

SGNA conference was very educational and informative. One topic for discussion was what to do in the event of a fire or evacuation. Ask yourself these questions:Do you know where your fire alarm is located and how to pull it?Who can turn off your oxygen shut off valves and where are they located? If this valve location is inaccessible secondary to the FIRE, where is the valve feed to the blocked one located? How to use a fire extinguisher and its location? How to acknowledge that the rooms are empty once cleared? What devices are available at your organization to move patients? What egress routes and alternatives are available?

Fire is not an everyday occurrence. When things heat up, literally, and the smoke limits your vision and your ability to breathe, this is not the time to look for the fire process and proceduremanual or the recommended escape routes. Seconds can mean the difference between life and death for everyone involved. Start reviewing what you need to know for a real fire. Get hot on it! (oh, these puns are almost painful)
