SAVE CAMPUS, SAVE EDUCATION, SAVE NATIONAN APPEAL: JOINT FORUM FOR MOVEMENT ON EDUCATION (JFME)

The re-orientation of economic policy towards Liberalisation, Globalisationand Privatisation has had a disastrous impact on education. Knowledge hasbecome a powerful instrument of the market economy to monopolise knowledgeand serve exclusionary interests. Alongside, the vision of a scientific, secularand democratic society engaged in the pursuit of social justice and equity hasbeen abandoned in favour of commercial initiatives that transform knowledgeinto pure commodity for profits. The Union Government’s decision to commiteducation to GATS in 2005 presaged the withdrawal of the State from public-funding and the promotion of private institutions. In the last decade, successivegovernments have aggressively pursued the line- or commercialization dictatedby GATS. Regardless of ideology and political character, governments havetried to impose drastic cuts in public. spending on education leading to unofficialfreezes in permanent recruitment of teachers and staff, hostile service conditionsand mechanical assessment of academic productivity, erosion of theConstitutional right to Reservation for SC/ST/OBC and the denial of promotionsand pensions to teachers and staff in public-funded institutions. Guided by theNITI AAYOG, the current Union Government is bringing out new rules to riditself from its constitutional duty: to provide affordable, free education to all.Recent measures like HEFA, HIEERA and Graded Autonomy push public- fundedinstitutions towards forced commercialization and debt. In the name of reformblatant attempts are, made to throttle the autonomy of higher education throughexcessive centralization. The attempted imposition of CCS rules and ESMA onteachers is an attack on intellectual autonomy and the critical functioning ofunions within academic spaces.

There is an urgent necessity for an alternative pro-people education policy.This alternative policy should aim at safe guarding our constitutional values,strengthen the public-funded education system, allow more intellectual freedomand sensitively nurture our secular, multicultural ethos. To further this agenda,a broad platform has been formed in the name of Joint Forum for Movement onEducation (JFME). The JEME has convened a National Convention of all pro-people forces on 29th October 2018 at 11 AM in the Mavalankar HaII, NewDelhi. Our slogan will be “Save Campus, Save Education, Save Nation”. ThisNational Convention will resolve on a Charter of Demands to steer a largerstruggle for a secular, democratic, scientific and inclusive public-fundededucation system in our country.

PARAMATHI VELUR UNITThe Unit meeting was held on 8th December 2018 at 6.30 PM at The

South Indian Residency A/C Hall under the chairmanship of Dr. R. Subramaniam,

the President of the Unit. The President explained in detail about the progress

in the preparation and submission of the applications for the revision of the

pension for those retired before 2006. The doubts regarding the filling up of the

forms and the annexures to be included have been clearly explained to the

respective members. All the pensioners and the family pensioners who are

eligible for revision before 2006 is scheduled to be prepared and submitted

before the end of December 2018 to the RJD, Dharmapuri.

The Secretary explained in detail about his participation in the AIFUCTO

Annual Conference held at Kanyakumari and the resolutions passed in the

General Body Meeting which is to be addressed to the respective Ministries,

Departments both at the centre and states.

Resolutions:

1. Each member has to pay a minimum of Rs. 7000 towards the Building Fund

for the Central Office at Chennai.

2. Each member should pay at least Rs. 500 towards the Cyclone Relief Fund.

3. All the members are requested to pay Rs. 1000 towards the Life Member-

ship Fee for the AIFRUCTO.

Our President Dr. R. Subramaniam has generously paid Rs.10,000/-

towards Building Fund and Rs. 1,000/- towards Cyclone Releif Fund.

Prof. M. Dhandapani (Chemistry) has donated Rs. 2,000/- towards the

Cyclone Relief Fund. Totally Rs. 11,500 has been sent as the First Instalment of

Kaja Cyclone Releif Fund to the State Treasurer.

Prof. K. Palanisamy and Dr. M. Padmavathi paid Rs. 1,000/- each to

become Life Members of the AIFRUCTO.

Prof. R. Chinnaswamy, Retired as faculty of English of Kandaswami

Kandar's College, Paramathi Velur and 11 family pensioners joined as members

of our Unit. Dr. R. Masilamani hosted the dinner for the members present today

and was appreciated and congratulated by the members for his generosity.

The Joint Secretary Prof. P. Dhandapani proposed vote of thanks. The

next meeting will be held on 13.01. 2019 at the same venue at the same time.

TIRUCHY UNITAs Scheduled, the monthly meet was held at 5pm on 2nd Saturday of

8-12-2018, attended by 31 members. Initially, welcoming the members present,

the Jt. Secretary Dr. Muraliji, presiding over the gathering, gave a detailed

account of various steps being taken by different govt. colleges and the govt.

aided institutions for processing the recently cleared pension revisions as

well as clearing the arrears in our region. He appealed to our members to form

vigilant committees to take up the matter of pension revision processing by

frequently visiting all of the colleges in our area, to realize the monetary ben-

efits quickly, as some of the other units have done. Later on, the unit Treasurer

Prof. HUSSAINY, gave a detailed account of what transpired in the recently

held E.C. meeting, various demands put forth and the resolutions taken and

passed. The names of the members whose birth days fell in this month were

individually called by the Treasurer and they were felicitated. Dr. Saranathan

individually contributed Rs.200 (Rupees Two hundred only) and the most of

the bulk amount was, as usual, met by our unit for providing snacks and tea to

all those present. Note of thanks at the end was proposed by the unit treasurer.

A total of 25 members of our unit voluntarily and whole heartedly contrib-

uted (by both cash and cheques) for the gaja cyclone relief fund - 2018, during

the meeting proceedings. They are DRS/ PROFESSORS : 1. R. John Louis (Rs.

2000), 2. V. Antony samy, 3. V. Jayaraman, 4. V. Kulandaivelu, 5. M. Subramaniyan

(All Rs. 1000 each), 6. A. Narayanasamy (Rs. 600), 7. Anbusaravanan,

8. Alaguperumal, 9. Arumugam, 10. P. Balraj, 11. Mrs. Karuna chestlet,

12. E. Balakrishnan, 13. A.K. Kakkappan, 14. M.S.Krishnamurthy, 15. T. Krishna,

16. D. Muraliji, 17. A. Muthiyah, 18. Naveen Ahmed, 19. A. Nagarathinam,

20. A. Navanitham, 21. N. Ponnusamy, 22. Rangarajan, 23. Saranathan

24. Viswanathan and 25. B. Ramanathan (All Rs. 500 each).

A total of Rs. 16,100 (Rupees Sixteen thousands, one hundred only) which

was realized from the above named members, for the benefit of 'Gaja Cyclone

Relief' was instantly sent to the state treasurer Prof. Bala subramaniyam, through

the crossed cheques on 14/12/18 itself. Additionally Prof. R. John Louis has

sent a cheque for Rs. 1000 (rupees one thousand only) to the unit towards the

building purchase fund.

Very recently and in the recent past, following ten (10) new members have

been inducted into our Trichy TANRECTA unit, They are DRS/ PROFESSORS

Out of the totally listed 374 TANRECTA members now, only 114 members

have so far paid their 2018-19 annual subscriptions. That is exactly 260 listed

members have so far not cleared their dues, in spite of individual reminders to

them, and the TANRECTA - SPEAKS book let in regularly being received by

them all. It is earnestly requested, please send the 2018-19 annual subscription

of Rs, 325 (Rupees three hundred twenty five only) by crossed cheque (drawn

on TANRECTA, Trichy) and send the same to Prof. Hussainy, Treasurer, 13/4

Our Next meeting will be held on 12-1-2018, 2nd Saturday at the pre-

CHENNAI UNIT

The Chennai unit of TANRECTA observes the second Saturday of

December every year as Pensioners day. This month on 8th Dec 2018, along

with the monthly meeting, a function was organized to honor the octogenarian

pensioners of Chennai unit of TANRECTA in the auditorium of Quaid E Milleth

College. The function ended with a sumptuous lunch in honor of the

octogenarians. The chief guest for the function was Mr. Mohan, general

secretary and advisor to the Revenue officials Association, Tamil Nadu. Mr

Mohan was happy that TANRECTA was leading the movement for Pensioners

in Tamilnadu in a spirited way. Dr. Freeda Gnana Rani, the principal of Quaid E

Millet government Arts college for women, who was the guest of honor for the

function eulogized the pensioners saying that they were people with

commitment for the students during their service and the present teachers had

to emulate them to be good and dedicated teachers.

The function and monthly meeting were presided over by

Dr. V Swaminathan . About 200 members of the Chennai unit attended. In his

presidential address, Dr. V. Swaminathan narrated the issues of pensioners,

especially the problems faced by them for the second stage of pension

revision. The Secretary gave a report about the DS Nakara case leading to

higher Fixation of Pension. The three office bearers of the Unit

Dr.M. Chandrasekaran (vice president), Dr. Albert (joint secretary) and Dr Usha

Ragotham (Treasurer) contributed in a very special way in organizing the

function and also during the function. The meeting came to an end with vote of

thanks by Joint Secretary Dr. Albert.

Next meeting of TANRECTA Chennai unit is on 12th January at 4 pm, at

Quaid E Millet college, near Spencer plaza.

The Kumbakonam Unit of Tanrecta met in the premises of Gopal
