Dear Members:
This year our desire for spring is greater than ever, I actually have a tee time tomorrow. As I write this on March 31
st, they are calling several inches
of snow (yahoo!!). I guess that means I have to get the clubs out of the liv-ing room. At least my wife will be happy!
A week ago, the RACOC, had our monthly breakfast meeting at Taconic Retreats. It was a great turnout and it is a great facility. If you get a chance, you should stop by for a visit. Our speaker was a Professor from Dutchess Community College who gave a talk about working in an economy that is less than spectacular.
Overall, his point, and a point that I have clumsily been trying to convey over the last couple of years, was that we should have constant vigilance in our businesses. Just because we are in a down economy, we should not pull in the oars. It is the time to retool and refresh our approach and pre-pare ourselves for when times are more prosperous. It is that down time that we should use to make new contacts, even if they don’t immediately turn into customers or clients. It is the network building that can reap bene-fits when both the climate is right and when it is less than perfect.
It is that exposure that the RACOC does best. At the Chamber we provide many opportunities for you to expand your network and meet some really great people. It is up to you if want to take that challenge on. I have people say to me all the time-“what does the chamber do for me?” My standard reply is “a lot”, and I go about regaling the virtues of what their dues pro-vide. But in the back of my mind, I am dying to say (in a nice way) - “what opportunities that the Chamber provides do you take advantage of?” It is the old adage- “you can bring a horse to water, but you can not make them drink.” Every business person has a personal responsibility to make a deci-sion on how to market their business and themselves. It is our job, as a Chamber, to provide you the opportunities, and it is your decision to use those opportunities for your advantage.
On a final note, the annual visitors guide is set to go to print. However last minute ads are still being accepted. Please call Claudia Cooley at the Chamber office for more information. This year’s guide has been a great project, with a lot of community input and the ad response has been ex-traordinary. We have exceeded our expectations and it is this response that will allow us to increase the number of books printed and in turn, increase your exposure. So, thanks to all of you who continue to realize the value of not only your membership-but the value of your added support to projects such as the visitors guide.

Always There annually assists over 1,800 Ulster County residents. In just ONE Year ¾ Our skilled, compassionate, personal care aides provided over 107,600 hours to clients in their homes, and nurses and therapists made over 42,000 visits. Also, in November, Always There Family Home Health Services was awarded, the 2009 HomeCare Elite Award. This annual award identifies the top 25 percent of agencies in the USA.
The Always There Adult Day Programs allow respite for the caregivers. It also provides quality opportunities for the frail elderly to socialize doing activities and exercise providing mental stimulation and promoting physical well-being. It is our commitment to quality home health care in the Hudson Valley that makes these centers viable to the local community. MEMBER UPDATE Arbor Ridge Showcases Local Artists
Partners In Art
Beginning March 22 and running throughout 2011, the public is invited to Partners in Art, a year-long visual gift to the Rhinebeck Community from Arbor Ridge at Brookmeade, the outstanding leader in Independent Senior Living in Dutchess County. Our distinguished setting and comfortable lifestyle form the perfect backdrop for Partners in Art. We believe Partners in Art will make a joyful contribution to the pleasant and unique spirit that is Rhinebeck. Five local artists will present their work throughout our Lobby, Great Room, Library and Dining Room. Each exhibit will be displayed for about two months.
Arbor Ridge is delighted to welcome Doris Cultraro as our Keynote Artist. She exemplifies the same heart and passion for seniors and for artistic expression that makes Arbor Ridge such a special place. Doris was our partner in giving birth to this concept and we are thankful for her leadership. Doris will display prints of her stained glass creations and restorations. Partners in Art will also include two artists in this in-augural year who have a direct partnership with Arbor Ridge: Dr Robert Lipgar is one of our first residents. His photographs adorn our community on a regular basis; and his work is the inspiration for the wall-sized mosaic that graces our indoor pool. We couldn’t think of launching a program called Partners in Art without him. Joe Mullins, a landscape artist and art teacher in West Chester County, is the son-in-law of Francis Cummins, another special Arbor Ridge resident. Our other two artists, Joel Weisbrod and Betsy Jacaruso are well known for their passion and skill through-out Dutchess County. What may be less known is their commitment to seniors. Both have partnered with Arbor Ridge in the past and we are grateful for their participa-tion. At the start of each show, the artist will present a lecture about their work as part of the Arbor Ridge Coffee and Culture Series, a monthly event designed to promote the best of the Arts, Music , and Rich History of The Hudson Valley.

Coverage Corner
In the past month since I wrote the previous coverage corner the world has seen one of the greatest hu-
manitarian tragedies of this generation. As I am sure you have guessed I am referring to all of the things that have
and are still going on in Japan. First, I want to say my thoughts and prayers go out everyone affected by the events
there. I am sure that most of us have looked at this sequence of events from many angles. The huge and tragic loss
of life. The massive loss of property and finally, the damage to the economic stability of the country.
I would like to look at it with you from the insurance angle. This is the insurance trifecta or the perfect
storm (in the worst way) from a loss and coverage perspective. Three things happened there: Earthquake,
Tsunami, Nuclear Meltdown. One of those things can be covered pretty well, one can be covered somewhat and
one cannot be covered at all.
I will start with the one that cannot be covered at all, nuclear hazard. This is one of the main exclusions
from all property insurance policies, both personal and commercial. This exclusion reads: "Nuclear Hazard"
means any nuclear reaction, radiation, or radioactive contamination, all whether controlled or uncontrolled or
however caused, or any consequence of any of these. As you can see from that excerpt from a property insurance
form there is no ambiguity with regard to coverage. If there was a meltdown for any reason we all would be with-
out coverage.
Second, I will address the portion of the situation that might be covered if you had purchased the correct
policy. That’s the Tsunami. More than likely the Tsunami would be classified as a flood and if you had a flood
policy then it should respond to the extent the policy would allow. We all saw the videos of the houses floating
down the streets after the wave hit and unfortunately it is not the intent of a flood policy to replace your house
when it washes away. All flood insurance is written through the Federal Government by insurance companies so it
is really a government program of indemnity not an insurance policy. Without getting into too much detail most of
the homes around here would only have coverage for the major systems of the home (furnace, hot water heater,
washer, dryer etc.) not for the home itself if it was washed away. That is because most of the homes around here
have a portion of the living area below grade, this disallows for structure coverage and allows for only systems
coverage. Flood is really an entire article on its own. Just remember the take away here is flood coverage is not
what you think.
Third, is the Earthquake portion and I am relatively certain that I will surprise most of you by saying you do
not have this coverage now but you can get it. Here is the exclusion that is in most all of our policies:
Earthquake, including land shock waves or tremors before, during or after a volcanic eruption
I have reviewed the endorsement offered by one of our carriers and the buyback for this coverage reads just like
this exclusions reads:
We insure for direct physical loss to property covered under Section 1 caused by earthquake,
including land shock waves or tremors before, during or after a volcanic eruption. So as you can see an earthquake can be covered in full by most property policies with the correct endorsements.
This situation while tragic gives us a good opportunity to reflect on our own insurance and think about whether
we would’ve been covered the way we would’ve expected to be or not.

Health and wellness. Something our culture seems to be obsessed with – but let’s face it – how
many of us really take the time to use our resources to promote wellness in our community?
