Winter Holiday Safety Tips

Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.

Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn

Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed.

Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.

Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power out-age

never use candles.

Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for in-door or outdoor use, but not both.

Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.

Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.

Keep decorations away from windows and doors.

Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.

Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.

Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.

New name for State Agency

The “North Dakota Division of Vocational Rehabili-tation” is replacing the name “Rehabilitation Con-sulting and Services” to better reflect the mission and services of the agency. It also provides services to employ-ers who would like assistance in determining work-place accommodations, ergonomic studies and help with hiring and retaining qualified employees with disabilities. DVR can also provide information about the Americans with Disabilities Act. All con-sultation services are free of charge. Another service provided by DVR is working with citizens aged 55 and older who are encountering low vision or blindness. The purpose of the pro-gram is to find accommodations to assist the indi-vidual to remain living independently in his or her own home. This service also is free of charge. The staff consists of Kari Shea, Sheila Murphy, Martha Soine and Becki Hoff along with support staff Elaine Wanner and Monica Kubischta. The office can be reached at 227-7600.

North Dakota and western Minnesota Chevy dealers kick-off Chevy Scholar program Four area students will receive $5,000 scholarships

The West Dakota and Heartland Chevy Dealers of North Dakota and western Minnesota have combined forces to launch a new scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors. The Chevy Scholar Program

(www.chevyscholar.com) invites nominations for out-standing high school juniors and seniors in the market area to compete to receive four $5,000 college scholar-ships. Nominations begin now and end February 20, 2011, at which time 10 scholarship finalists will be chosen. From February 24-March 9, 2011, online and text voting will take place to determine the winners. The scholarship winners will be announced March 12, 2011. “As dealers, we are all individually involved in our commu-nities, supporting youth sports, organizations like Rotary and Optimists and slew of other needs,” says West Dakota Chevy president Kathy Gaddie. “The Chevy Scholar pro-gram allows us to work together to provide an ongoing benefit to outstanding students across the region.” Students can nominate themselves or be nominated by family, friends, parents, teachers or coaches. Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.chevyscholar.com or picked up from local Chevy dealers. Nominators fill out basic information including community involvement, aca-demic achievements, extracurricular activities and volun-teer work. According to Heartland Chevy president, Brad Sather, the Chevy Scholar program will showcase the best of the area’s young people. “By engaging the public in the voting process we get to help bring attention to the outstanding young people in our communities through some grassroots PR and social networking. It’s exciting to be a part of and we are looking forward to the process.” Nomination forms can be submitted at any Chevy dealership. At the end of the process, one nominator will win a $500 gift card through a ran-dom drawing. To learn more or to nominate a stu-dent , go to www.chevyscholar.com or visit your local Chevy dealer.

GET YOUR TEAM READY TO ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE

Challenging your fellow co-workers to a friendly competition!

Join the Body Fit Challenge 2011!

What is the BodyFit Challenge?

The BodyFit Challenge (BFC) is a collaboration between Healthy Results, Inc., the Go Red Action Grant, and the Pathways to Healthy Lives program to bring a 10-week community healthy lifestyle challenge. The BFC is designed to give each participant the knowledge and the empowerment to achieve and maintain healthy behaviors that will last a lifetime. The BFC will incorporate both physical activity and wellness education throughout the ten weeks to maximize results and to enhance the learning experience. Weekly educational lectures will be offered with topics such as heart health, nutrition for weight management, and benefits of cardiovascular exercise and strength training, and meal planning and preparation for chronic disease prevention. Weekly active workshops will also be provided focusing on proper use of exercise equipment, back squat and bench press te4chneque, group cross country skiing, and group walks. Cooking classes will include: how to use a nutrition log and read food labels, cooking around the world and food allergies and sensitivities (see schedule at WRCC or online at dickinsonparks.org). There will be weekly prizes given away for exercise and nutrition logs turned in to Healthy Results, Inc. personal trainers. A Grand Prize will be given away to each of the following categories: 1 winning team (each made of 4 participants), 1 individ-ual, and 1 Healthy Result's staff.

Go Team!

There is nothing like a friendly competition to bring out the best in us. Within your company, create a team of four people who are ready to take the challenge. Better yet, create multiple teams within your company and compete

against one another or challenge teams from other companies. Make it fun; imagine the bragging rights when your team wins. Making a commitment to a team significantly increases your chances of success. You will have fellow teammates to help keep you accountable, boost your ambition, and hear about your victories and your frustrations. Stevenson Funeral Home was the 2010 team BodyFit Challenge winners. Maryls Stevenson quoted “Having a team in the Body Fit Challenge encouraged us to work together to reach our fitness and nutritional goals by incorporat-ing time for exercise into our daily routine and provide nutritious snacks and meals in the office setting. Each mem-ber of our team saw positive results personally and we benefited as a group from the motivational and informative sessions that the Body Fit Challenge offered. The Body Fit Challenge team participation is a great way to encourage and be encouraged to make lifestyle changes that will affect your overall health and wellness for years to come.” As a team, you will be going through the Body Fit Challenge together…think of the camaraderie within your company. If you cannot create a team or prefer to enter the Body Fit Challenge individually, you can also participate. Remember, nobody deserves to get healthy more than you!

For more information regarding the BodyFit Challenge 2011, please call Natashia Ash at 701-260-8803 or check online at dickinsonparks.org.
