sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. ProduCTIon CredITs

Dax leoneDax Leone is in his fifth year at the

helm of the Central Oklahoma baseball program and is well on his way in getting the Bronchos back among the NCAA Division II elite.

Leone, who took over the reigns in the summer of 2010 following previ-ous stints as a head coach and assistant coach at various levels around the coun-try and in Canada, is 122-76 with three consecutive 30-win seasons.

His first team won 10 of its last 11 games to rally for a 24-23 finish and the

Bronchos followed with a 31-17 campaign in 2012 for the first 30-win season since 2008.

Leone led UCO to a 30-19 finish in 2013 that included a third-place showing in its first season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athlet-ics Association and a trip to the MIAA Tournament semifinals after a first-round series win over Emporia State.

The Bronchos continued their upward climb in 2014 with a 37-17 campaign, the most wins since 2007. UCO tied for second in the MIAA regular season standings, swept a first-round conference tournament series and then went 1-2 in the final four.

Leone had seven players earn all-conference honors in 2014, including Player of the Year Phillip Wilson and Pitcher of the Year Ricky Reeves, and four players picked up All-Central Region accolades.

Four players coached by Dax were on major league rosters in 2014 -- Jeremy Hefner of the New York Mets, Tyler Lyons of the St. Louis Cardinals, Duke Welker of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Evan Gattis of the Atlanta Braves.

Dax got his coaching start as the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator at East Central, spending three seasons with the Tigers.

He helped lead ECU to its only Lone Star Conference North Divi-sion championship in 2004, re-cruited eight all-conference players and coached LSC North Division Pitcher of the Year Cory Hall, who had a 1.76 earned run average that ranks as the best in school history.

Leone was also the head coach of the Kelowna (British Columbia) Falcons of the West Coast Baseball League during the summers of 2003 and ‘04, directing nine all-conference players and leading the team to a 35-21 record and their first-ever division title.

Leone was pitching coach at St. Gregory’s in 2005 before becoming

pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Seminole State College. He was with the Trojans for one season, directing a staff that had a

3.89 ERA, led the NJCAA in strikeouts with 481 in 432 innings and limited opponents to a .235 batting average.

Of the players Leone coached in 2006, eight were drafted and six went on to sign with a Division I school.

Leone went from Seminole to Division I Louisiana-Monroe and spent three seasons there as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

ULM pitchers posted some of the best seasons in school history under Dax’s tutelage and four of his players were taken in the major league baseball draft.

the leone File

The Warhawks set a school record for saves (14) during Leone’s first season in 2007 en route to winning 30 games and qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in five years.

Four pitchers earned Louisiana Pitcher of the Week or Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors during that 2008 season, which ended with the War-hawks capturing the conference title in finishing with a 34-24 record.

ULM went 32-27 and was runner-up in the conference tournament during Leone’s final season in 2009.

Dax moved on to OSU and spent the 2010 season with the Cowboys, working with the pitching staff. Three OSU pitchers -- Tyler Lyons, Thomas Keeling and Mike Strong -- were taken in the 2010 draft.

A prep standout at Shawnee High School, Leone started his college career at Seminole. He went 15-3 during two seasons there while helping the Trojans to a 107-17 record and a national runner-up finish in 1997.

Leone moved on to Texas in 1999 and went 8-6 that season, including a 6-3 mark in Big 12 Conference games. He was an Academic All-Big 12 pick as a senior in 2000.

Dax, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU, is married (Amber) and has two children (Tal Gunner and Payden Brooks).

kirk WalkerHelping out the Central Oklahoma program as a graduate assistant coach in 2015 is former collegiate All-

American and professional player Kirk Walker.A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Walker was a four-year star at shortstop for perennial powerhouse Oklahoma

City University, helping lead the Stars to 207 wins and four consecutive NAIA World Series appearances. He had an immediate impact as a freshman in 2008, hitting .443 with eight home runs and 52 runs batted

in and came back the next season to bat .410 with 12 doubles, eight homers and 55 RBI.Walker had a .392 average with 30 doubles, nine homers and 61 RBI as a junior in earning second-team

All-Sooner Athletic Conference honors. He capped his career with a sensational senior campaign in 2011, hitting .423 with 99 hits, 24 doubles, eight homers and 72 RBI.

Kirk was named the SAC and NAIA Player of the Year that season in addition to earning an NAIA Gold Glove award. He bat-ted .416 for his career with 33 homers and 240 RBI while setting OCU career records for at bats (897), runs (289), hits (373) and doubles (77).

Walker was drafted in the 26th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves and played several years in the minor leagues before opting to return to school.

toDD GeorGeTaking over as Central Oklahoma’s assistant coach/recruiting coordinator is Todd George, who took

over the position in August 2014.George came to UCO after one year at junior college powerhouse Seminole State College. He helped the

Trojans to a 41-18 record in 2014 and directed a pitching staff that ranked third in the country in strikeouts per game (8.5) and total strikeouts with 500 in 462.1 innings.

An Oklahoma City native, George played two years at Seminole and was a member of the 1999 NJCAA World Series team before spending one year each at Texas-Arlington and Oklahoma Baptist. He spent several years in professional baseball playing for the Montreal Expos organization and was a three-time All-Star for the Independent League Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Todd started his coaching career at OBU, serving as pitching coach and junior varsity head coach from 2002-06. Five OBU players he coached went on to sign professional contracts.

George was out of coaching until taking over as pitching coach at Southwestern Oklahoma in 2011. The Bulldogs lowered their team earned run average from 7.74 in 2010 to 3.50 by George’s final season in 2013, with that year’s pitching staff leading the Great American Conference while having three All-GAC selections and a ninth-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft.

Todd is engaged (Kadie Berlin).

saWyer CarrollIn his first year on the Central Oklahoma staff as a graduate assistant coach is former Division I All-American

and professional player Sawyer Carroll.A baseball-football star at Henryetta High School who led the Knights to a Class 3A state baseball cham-

pionship, Carroll played two years at Seminole State College and was an All-Bi-State Conference performer as a sophomore.

Sawyer went on to play two years at Kentucky, hitting a Southeastern Conference-best 23 doubles as a junior before putting together a record-setting senior season in 2008.

Carroll became the first consensus first-team All-American in school history that year after hitting a conference-leading .419 with 19 home runs and a school-record 83 runs batted in to lead the Wildcats to the national tournament.

He was also an Academic All-SEC selection as a senior and finished with school career records for average (.386) and on-base percentage (.483).

Carroll was taken in the third round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres and played several years in the minor leagues for the organization, earning Midwest League All-Star honors in 2009 and Texas League All-Star recognition in 2011.

A cousin of former UCO baseball All-American Tyler Carroll, Sawyer is married (Katie).

nother strong recruiting class coupled with a gifted group of returners has Central Oklahoma pointing toward a run at the NCAA Division II national tournament in 2015.

The Bronchos added several talented transfers to a team that returned 12 lettermen from last year’s 37-17 squad, with

UCO expected to challenge for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Ath-letics Association championship and its first playoff berth since 2006.

“We’re really excited about competing in the MIAA for the third year,” said fifth-year head coach Dax Leone, who has a 122-76 record at the helm. “Obviously we had a solid season last year, but we were very disappointed in how it finished. Our goal is to get into the NCAA post-season this year, either by our regional ranking or by winning the conference championship.”

The Bronchos tied for second in the league regular season standings last year and then swept their first-round series in the MIAA Post-season Tournament before being ousted in the semifinals.

UCO featured one of the nation’s top hit-ting clubs last year with a .350 team average and the offensive attack will be potent behind two returning All-Central Region performers in senior first baseman Jake O’Brien and senior second baseman Josh Ingram.

“Offense should once again be our strength if we can cut down on our strikeouts,” Leone said. “We’re pretty solid on both sides of the plate and have created a lot of depth in our system here.

“Our ballpark sets up for us to be really offensive and we have a good number of guys who will be able to steal some bases. Our approach will be the same -- play aggressive, push the issue and create mismatches in our favor.”

Senior Ricky Reeves is the lone starting pitcher back from last season, but the reign-ing MIAA Pitcher of the Year is one of the best in Division II and leads a staff that will rely heavily on newcomers.

“We really did a good job building our depth in the recruiting process on the mound,” Leone said. “This is a phase of the game we work a lot on and feel this should be a solid part of our club with our pitching background as a coaching staff.”

Here’s a position-by-position look at UCO: CatCher

A trio of junior college transfers are expected to vie for the starting assignment and all three should see playing time. Juniors Brad Mc-Donald and Issac Hellbusch are probably the front-runners, though sophomore Chris Lobato is also in the mix. McDonald and Hellbusch both started last year, with McDonald batting .431 to rank among the nation’s top juco hitters, while Lobato sat out a redshirt year. First Base

UCO showcases one of the best in the business here in senior Jake O’Brien, a first-team All-MIAA and All-Central Region selection a season ago. O’Brien had the second-best average (.419) and on-base percentage (.509) in the league while also driving in 32 runs and will again be a major offensive catalyst for the Bronchos.

A

Ricky Reeves

2015 season outlookseConD Base

Another senior standout is set to handle this position, with Josh Ingram ready to take over after seeing part-time starting duty here last year. Ingram hit .400 with 16 doubles and 37 RBI in earning first-team All-MIAA and second-team All-Central Region honors at designated hitter and is ready to end his career with another strong season. shortstoP

The Bronchos will be breaking in a new starter here and junior Jake Borrego should become a mainstay. Borrego is a

defensive ace in the field and should also con-tribute offensively after hitting .318 with 31 RBI in the juco ranks last year, with UCO expecting major production from this newcomer.

thirD BaseA returning letterman and newcomer are battling

it out for the starting spot at the hot corner. Senior Ethan Elroy hit .348 with two home runs in limited action at several positions last year, but he’s looking to take over as the every-day starter. Junior transfer Brad McDonald has experience here and at catcher and will challenge for time at both positions.

outFielDFour returning lettermen are ex-

pected to earn the bulk of playing time in the outfield, including one full-time starter and another who saw part-time

starting duty last year.Junior Dilon Argo is back as the anchor in center field after display-

ing superb defense in a starting role while also hitting .356 with seven doubles, seven homers and 39 RBI. Senior Dylan Raper played all three positions as a part-time starter in 2014, batting .351 with four homers and 15 RBI, and is expected to be the main man in left field. Senior Dylan Tinker is looking to take over in right after hitting .333 with five homers and 25 RBI as the part-time DH last season. Senior Tyler Hatcher, who had a .304 average in a reserve role last season, and junior newcomer Austin Stewart will also push for playing time. PitCher

There appears to be good depth in the pitching corps, though the Bronchos will be using plenty of newcomers as only five pitchers return from last year.

UCO has one of the finest arms in Division II leading the way in senior star Ricky Reeves, last year’s MIAA Pitcher of the Year and a first-team All-Central Region selection. Reeves went 8-2 with a school-record 2.12 earned run average while striking out 59 batters in 72 1/3 innings and he’s clearly the staff ace. The only other returners are seniors Andrew Davis and Tanner Ferrell and juniors Dennis Morelli and Zach Wunderlich, who are all expected to see action in relief roles.

Junior transfers Carson Corff, Daulton Leiker, Rande Revilla and Nick Sornsin should all contend for spots in the starting rotation. The Bronchos will also get relief help from juniors Brent Backlund, Zach Cantwell, Collin Day and Jared Fowler and sophomores Konner Kyser and Drew Polk. DesiGnateD hitter

Plenty of players could see action here, depending on what happens at other positions and who has the hot bat. Senior Dylan Tinkler showed what he could do in a part-time role last year, while junior Collin Day and sophomore Trae Smith will also contend for at bats.

Central Oklahoma got off to a fast start and went on to put together its best season in seven years in 2014 as the Bronchos made a run at making it to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

UCO shot out of the gate 5-0 and had three other winning streaks of at least five games en route to a 37-17 finish that included a runner-up showing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. It was the third straight 30-win season for the Bronchos and the most wins since 2007.

“We started strong and were pretty consistent the whole season,” head coach Dax Leone said. “Our offense carried us in a lot of games and we did a lot of good things.”

Central showcased its offensive prowess early, outscoring Arkansas-Fort Smith 37-8 in sweeping a three-game series to open the season and then routing Arkansas Baptist 14-5.

UCO started league play with a four-game split at Emporia State, winning 17-16 as Phillip Wilson had three home runs and seven RBI and taking a 2-0 victory behind Ricky Reeves’ one-hitter.

The Bronchos took three of four games from league rival Washburn the next weekend and did the same the following week at Southwest Baptist.

JOe mUller

Now in his seventh year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II.

UCO teams have captured 10 conference championships and had 10 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013.

Fifty-eight student-athletes have earned All-America honors over the past six years and the Bronchos have placed 42nd or better three times in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings out of nearly 350 Division II institutions.

The athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have also increased significantly under Joe’s guidance. He secured the largest gift in program history in 2012, continues to grow Stampede Club membership and also introduced a corporate sales initiative that has generated record revenues for the program in just four years.

Academically, UCO’s student-athletes are performing at all-time high levels. For the past six years, the overall grade point average of student-athletes has surpassed that of the general student population and to demonstrate that academics is a priority, the athletic department now hosts an annual Academic Awards Banquet recognizing the achievements of student-athletes.

A native of Stillwater, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State and got his start in athletic administration at OSU when he served as director of athletic marketing and promotions from 1985-90.

Muller was involved in the television industry for more than a decade before returning to OSU in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue in ‘06.

He was senior associate athletic director for external relations for the Boilermakers for two years before becoming just the seventh athletic director in Central’s rich athletic history in July of 2008

Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).

Central Oklahoma is in its third year as a member of the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the mid-ameriCa interCOlleGiate athletiCs assOCiatiOn State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997.

Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commis-sioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought member-ship back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was re-placed by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and

Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lin-coln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood. All four schools began competing as full-time members in 2012-13.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left the conference with 14 schools.
