sCHOOl niCknaMe“Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. It was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. abOUt tHe COVer

edGar MirakU

Edgar Miraku is in his fourth year at the Central Oklahoma helm, returning to the school where he served as an assistant coach and earned two degrees before embarking on a sensational high school career.

Miraku is 65-33 in three years with the Bronchos, going 13-18 in 2012 when UCO started competing in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association -- arguably the best volleyball league in NCAA Division II -- and improving to 24-10 in 2013 before putting together a 28-5 campaign last year.

The Bronchos started a best-ever 15-0 and finished third in the league last season as Miraku was named MIAA Coach of the Year.

Edgar came to Central after a wildly succesfuly seven-year stint at Edmond Memorial, guiding the Bulldogs to a 209-48 record and four Class 6A state championships.

Miraku led EMHS to the first of those state titles in his initial year, with the Bulldogs going 41-16 in capturing the 2005 crown. A 24-9 season that included a state semifinal appearance followed and Memorial won another championship in 2007 to cap a 31-4 year.

The Bulldogs went 27-3 and made it to the state quarterfinals in 2008 before winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and ‘10, going a combined 62-8 those two years. Memorial finished 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals in 2011.

Miraku played professionally in his native Albania for four years and was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95.

Edgar came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program. He served as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with the Bronchos going127-75 during that span.

Miraku has coached several club teams during his career, including a lengthy stint with the Oklahoma Peak Performance (OP2) junior club team. He led OP2 to a 58-18 record and fifth-place national finish in 2002-03, with the 2009 team finishing third in the nation.

Miraku has also been involved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and served as head coach for two years. He guided the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup.

Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden).

Vernon spent time on the right side last season and could make the position her own this year.

Elizabeth Boyd, Samantha Padgett and Bevis will all look to challenge for the posi-tion as well.

Coach Miraku Says: “There is a ton of great potential on the right for us this

season. All of these players are incredibly versatile and can excel and contribute at this position.”

UCO returns second-team All-MIAA junior Allison Barr, who racked

up 243 kills and 62 blocks last season. She will lead a young group that

features three freshmen in Jordan Spence, Padgett and Boyd.

Coach Miraku Says: “Allison is very smart and makes great decisions, which makes her a very successful and

experienced middle. We are looking forward to see her offensive production

this year. Our freshmen bring a lot of speed and height to the position and should slot in

right away.” liberO/deFensiVe sPeCialist

Following a standout first season that saw her earn second-team All-MIAA honors, senior Whitney Gifford is ready

to grow into a leadership role as one of only two seniors on the squad.

Also returning is junior Mikayla Bangasser, who enjoyed a good season last year as a part-time starter.

Breanna Crain, Baleigh Murphy and Karen Montes will also look to contribute in their rookie campaigns.

Coach Miraku Says: “Whitney has a way of getting things done on defense and this could be a standout senior season for her. I’m really excited about this group.”

setter

After seizing the reigns last season, Katy Da-vis will look to build off a breakout sophomore campaign that saw her provide 1,361 assists.

Freshman Taylor Horton provides depth.Coach Miraku Says: “We are very excited

to have both Katy and Taylor and look forward to seeing both of them compete hard for the setter position.”

An intriguing blend of youth and experience has Central Oklahoma ready to cement its place among the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association elite in 2015.

The Bronchos return six players, including four regular starters, from a squad that went 28-5 a year ago en route to a third-place finish in the top conference in Division II.

It was UCO’s most wins since 2007 and with the core of the starting lineup intact, reigning MIAA Coach of the Year Edgar Miraku is excited to see what the upcoming season will bring.

“We have a good amount of players returning this year that will help our new players make a smooth transition from high school,” said Miraku, who is 65-33 with the Bronchos. “We feel like we can challenge the other top teams in the conference.”

Headlining UCO’s list of returners is All-American Barbara Jackson along with first-team All-MIAA performer Katy Davis. Also among the returning players are Allison Barr, Whitney Gifford and Bonnie Vernon.

“We did well last year, but now it’s time to build on that momentum and carry it into the new season,” Miraku said. “We lost a few depth players and need for some of the new players to step up, but I like this team and think it can accomplish a lot.”

A position-by-position look at the Bronchos: OUtside Hitter

Reigning MIAA Player of the Year and senior All-American Barbara Jackson posted career-best numbers in kills (472) and digs (314) and is expected to take her game to another level.

Joining Jackson as the team’s only returner is junior Bonnie Vernon, who enjoyed a solid 2014 season in chipping in with 205 kills.

The duo will be joined by freshmen Taylor Bevis and Deborah Njenje.

Coach Miraku Says: “Barbara returns after earning several awards last season and we are expecting more big things from her this year as she serves as our team captain. Bonnie has spent time on both the outside and right side. Both Taylor and Deborah will challenge immediately and have great athleticism and volleyball IQ.”

Central Oklahoma started the 2014 campaign on a blistering pace, shattering the school record for consecutive wins en route to its best season in nearly a decade.

The Bronchos won their first 15 matches, including 12 three-match sweeps, and upset three top-15 teams in finishing 28-5 for the most wins since 2007.

UCO also came in third in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association with a 17-5 record, winning eight of its last nine conference matches to close out the season.

The Bronchos opened the season with two-day tournaments on consecutive weekends at the Henderson State Classic and the South Central Classic, winning all eight matches and sweeping seven of their opponents in three straight sets.

UCO made its home debut against con-ference opponent Missouri Southern on Sept. 16 with its 10th sweep of the season to move to 11-0 for the first time in program history and went on to win its next four

2014 seasOn reViewconference matches to get to 15-0.

The Bronchos suffered their first defeat of the season at home to Missouri Western and followed that up with another loss at

Washburn, but responded by winning the next four matches -- including sweeps of Lindenwood at Hamilton Field House and away at Pittsburg State -- to improve to 19-2 on the season.

UCO dropped its next two outings and again rebounded strong. The Bronchos ripped off a seven-match winning streak, including a 3-2 victory over Washburn that

saw Barbara Jackson record a season-high 31 kills, and won nine of their last 10 matches to finish 28-5.

UCO littered the All-MIAA team with two first-team, three second-team and two honorable mention selections. Jackson and Katy Davis were first-team All-MIAA picks and Jackson went on to receive first-team All-Central Region and All-America honors, becoming the school’s first-ever first-team American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) All-American.

HaMiltOn Field HOUseCentral Oklahoma plays its home volleyball matches in Hamilton Field House, which

opened its doors in 1965.The Bronchos have an impressive 231-88 record (.724 winning percentage) at Hamilton

Field House, including a 126-39 mark (.764) over the past 14 seasons.Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor

of longtime coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The 3,000-seat facil-ity underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of individual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added four years ago.

Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads.

Numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

The MIAACentral Oklahoma is in its fourth year as a

member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Ath-letics Association, perhaps the premier conference in NCAA Division II.

The MIAA is made up of a 14 institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma and was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Inter-collegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100-plus years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team cham-pionships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently con-ducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for ti-tles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athlet-ic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri and Northwest Mis-souri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central

Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph Mc-Fillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded Mc-Fillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Ke-arney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which left 14 schools in the MIAA.
