HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND DESIGN

With December upon us, it is easy to get caught up in all the stresses that accompany the end of a semester: final grading, finishing projects and wrapping up semester long to‐do lists. While things can get rather hec c, it is invaluable to not forget what is important this me of year: holiday with family.

Family truly is the essen al founda on. We are so blessed to have a stable UCO family, a knowledgeable, caring and talent‐ed group of faculty and staff members who work together to make Central a university of which to be proud.

As we all come together to celebrate this holiday season, the UCO family presents a handful of fes ve events. Helping kick off the holiday season was the annual WinterGlow celebra on, now in its 15th year. This “Miracle on 2nd Street” themed event began with the ceremonial ligh ng of Old North, Central’s oldest building. Accompanying the event were carols performed by Central choir stu‐dents and comments from UCO President Don Betz and Edmond Mayor Charles Lamb.

The College of Fine Arts and Design will be presen ng two holi‐day favorites this season, “Boogie Woogie Christmas” and “Season’s Gree ngs.” “Boogie Woogie Christmas,” the musical theatre division’s annual holiday revue, has become a loved Ed‐mond tradi on for all age groups. This concert features 10 Cen‐tral student vocalist and two vocal/dance ensembles performing both tradi onal Christmas songs and toe‐tapping contemporary holiday tunes. The show starts at 8 p.m. and runs Nov. 29 – Dec 1 and Dec. 6 – 8. Reserva ons are strongly recommended due to the show’s popularity.

The College of Fine Arts and Design Theatre Department will also lend some holiday laughs with its comedic play “Season’s Gree ngs.” Wri en by Bri sh playwright Alan Ayckbourn, this play follows a madcap family through the holiday season. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 29 – Dec. 1 and at 2 p.m., Dec. 2 at the Pegasus Theater locat‐ed in the Liberal Arts building.

UCO received two Honorable Men on awards at the 35th Annual Public Rela ons Society of America Okla‐homa City Upper Case Awards Banquet where they competed against 109 award entries and 33 organiza‐ons. UCO was recognized for its work and orchestra on of the Housing and Dining Live Central video in

the External Video category. Sam Ferguson filmed and edited the video while Quin Tran and Tabbi Burwell produced the video. Tabbi Burwell also received credit for her work with a UCO wedding ad and wedding campaign in the Other Publica ons category. See wedding photos on our website as well as Facebook and Pinterest.

Congratula ons to President Don Betz who received the state’s highest honor for leader‐ship and significant contribu ons to the arts with his selec on as a recipient of the 2012 Governor’s Award, part of the Oklahoma Arts Council’s Governor’s Arts Awards. Cheer for UCO Professor of Art Bob Palmer who was also honored with the Community Service Award in recogni on for his contribu ons to the arts in specific Oklahoma communi es in the areas of leadership and volunteerism. Both received their awards from Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin at a ceremony in November in the 4th Floor Rotunda of the Oklaho‐ma State Capitol.

Caleb Cash, Coordinator, Parent & Family Programs, and Robert Howard, Director, Project Management, both in the Division of Student Affairs, have been selected as inaugural members of the COSA (Council on Student Affairs) Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy is the culmina on of COSA’s vision to provide advanced, cu ng‐edge leadership skill development opportuni es for select student affairs professionals at Oklahoma’s higher educa on ins tu ons.

When UCO posts open posi ons on jobs.uco.edu, PeopleAdmin is the

talent management system we use to process the hiring of new employ‐

ees. We also use this system for Individual Performance Plans (IPP’s) on

current employees. Over the next few months Human Resources will be

upgrading these components for improved service. They are more robust and user friendly than what we have today for

comple ng our “people tasks”, and we are expanding our automa on by adding a component for onboarding. The

onboarding module will allow us to automate and track the comple on of tasks and training for a new employee from

the day he or she accepts an offer of employment through their 90 day introduc on period.

We’re excited to be able to bring you these enriched services and will be looking for “super users” who frequently ac‐

cess PeopleAdmin to help in the tes ng phase. There will be plenty of training to make sure everyone is comfortable

with the upgrade and ge ng the most value from the improvements. If you are interested in helping us test the system,

· BW/ST 24 will open Wednesday, November 14. Approvers must approve time by noon, Thursday, November 15.

· BW/ST 26 will open Tuesday, December 11. Approvers must approve time by noon, Wednesday, December 12.

· BW/ST 01 will open Monday, December 17. Approvers must approve time by noon, Tuesday, December 18.

UCO has partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to open “CENTRAL PAN-

TRY”. As an outreach effort from Central’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC),

Central Pantry will serve as a resource for Central’s students, faculty and staff who need

assistance by providing non-perishable foods and hygiene products at no charge. The Re-

gional Food Bank of Oklahoma helped the VSLC set up the pantry, adding the benefit of

their years of experience serving the community to this new outreach effort.

“From our students working towards a degree to our faculty and staff that help these students, we want to enable them

to focus on their goal without the added burden of food insecurity.

The Central community takes care of each other, and in that vein

of thinking, opening the Central Pantry is the right thing to do,” said

Lyndsay Holder, assistant director of the VSLC. “The Regional

Food Bank has vast resources to help satellite pantries, like Cen-

tral Pantry, be successful. They have taught us how to run the food

pantry and inspect our space to make sure it meets their expecta-

tions. Also, we can order food from them at little or no cost to the

pantry.”

The pantry will be open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday and will

be closed when the university is closed. Those who wish to utilize

the pantry must provide documentation of current enrollment or

employment at the university. The pantry will also accept donations

of non-perishable food and hygiene items in the VSLC office,

Central Receiving will be closed for the Christmas Holiday break on December 24 through January 4, 2013. Normal receiving hours from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Monday through Friday, will commence on Monday, January 7th. Mercy Health Clinic will be closing at noon on Christmas Eve and will reopen for business at 8:00 am on December 26. Mercy Health Clinic is open to UCO fac‐ulty, staff, students and the Edmond community. The Wellness Center will be closed throughout the Holiday break. December 7 is the deadline for purchasing requisi ons, check requests, and non‐travel reimbursements. Pe y cash will not be available the three days prior to Christmas break (Dec 19‐21).

We have some excep onal employees here at the University of Central Oklahoma! It takes hundreds of UCO staff members

to keep our university growing and thriving everyday. From our Vice Presidents to the person who greets you at the front

desk of a campus office, we all make helping our students our top priority. We also have award programs in place to recog‐

nize and reward those who demonstrate excep onal performance. Our Employee Excep onal Performance Award program

is one such tool. In order to create an environment where UCO employees feel that they are publicly recognized for perfor‐

mance that reflects the innova ve, passionate, student and customer‐centered focus that Central has embraced, one quar‐

terly $500 award is presented four mes a year, and two annual $1250 awards. This award is available to UCO staff mem‐

bers whose job descrip ons are below director level and who have a minimum of six months of con nuous employment

prior to nomina on. Nomina ons may be made by anyone including faculty, staff, students and campus vendors.

Excep onal Performance Award nomina on forms for the Oct‐December quarter are now being accepted! When reviewing

nomina ons, our screening commi ee looks for specific characteris cs:

Impact: Service, dedica on, professionalism, and compassion in dealing with internal or external publics (students,

faculty, staff, and community). Inspires an overall sense of belonging that leads to a welcoming campus environment.

Effec veness: Promo on of University core values and purpose including character, collabora on, respect, and service

to the campus community.

Innova on: Contribu on toward more efficient or produc ve opera ons including money‐saving ideas, excep onal fis‐

cal responsibility, and improving service quality.

Significance: Accomplishments through campus work assignments that contribute to the success of UCO in the commu‐

nity either directly or through significant support of others from the campus.

Our recent award winners are excellent examples of these quali es. In the last fiscal year our Quarterly Employee Excep‐

onal Performance Award Winners were T F (July ‐September 2011), C G (October ‐ December

2011), A A (January ‐ March 2012), and R P (April ‐ June 2012). The coveted Annual Employee Excep on‐

al Performance Awards went to T F (Facili es Management) and K R (Academic Affairs).

Kicking off the current fiscal year, L W , C V A , is the

latest employee to receive this highly sought a er award. Linda won the July‐September

2012 quarterly award which was presented to her by Adam Johnson, Associate Vice Presi‐

dent of Enrollment Management. Linda is an exemplary employee and greatly valued by

her department. She was so dedicated that she was actually working with a student when

the award was announced during a department mee ng. Having missed the event, her

supervisor supplied an encore presenta on to her at her desk a erward.
