Page 2: CCT November 2012

I’ve been spending some time in London recently and it’s all gone Bond crazy! Everywhere you look there seems to be something

relating to the new ‘Skyfall’ film that was released at the end of October. Top Gear are doing a special, which would have aired by the

time you are reading this. So, we have our own homage to the great movie franchise and the many cars used in our Top Ten on page

11. Jill Carter has a fascinating insight into the world of investing in classic cars, we report regularly on vehicles being sold for record

figures, so it makes sense to have a look at classic cars to invest in, as well as to enjoy. Clare Lawrence chats to one of the Isle of Man

TT regulars, Cameron Donald in our Under The Spotlight feature. Talking bikes, the SBK and BSB have now finished and we report on

the last races and profile the Champs. Also the BTCC season has come to an end and we crown a brand new Champion, someone

familiar to our pages... Style-wise this month we see what was on offer at the biennial Paris Motor Show and look at a beautiful one-off

Rolls Royce Phantom I which has had a magic touch applied by coachbuilder Jonckheere. Lovely! Happy motoring! Professor

The Toyota GT 86 (Pronounced eight-six) is a joint effort from Toyota and Subaru, the new 2+2, front engine, rear wheel drive coupe which is available now. Originally, Subaru did not want to be part of the project due to the plans being a rear wheel drive set up, since you prob-ably know they prefer their vehicles all wheel drive. Also they felt that Toyota did not have what it took to build a proper sports car. The project was suspended until 2008 when Toyota invited Subara to view a prototype. This showed them what they were capable of which quickly changed the Subaru engineers minds. 4 years on and here is the road car. Get ready!

At the heart of the 86is Subaru's newly developed, horizon-tally opposed 1,998cc, four cylinder boxer engine with Toyotas D-4S tech-nology. This makes it the the worlds only front mounted horizontally opposed engine and rear wheel drive package. Inside is a completely driver focused cockpit, the seat design has been pains-takingly tuned to perfection through Nurburgring circuit testing under race conditions to ensure it remains comfort-able over long periods behind the wheel.

The steering wheel has adiameter of only 365mm, there's a red shift light that illuminates at 6,300 rpm and also features the worlds first frame-less rearview mirror. The GT 86 is a back- to-basics sports car that is said to rival the Audi TT and Nissan 370Z. Costs start at just under 30K or if you have a spare 40k you can get the top of the range Subaru’s version, the BRZ. (Below)

Rolls-RoycePhantom I

Jonckheere Coupé

This eye-catching car was unquestionabaly one of the stars of the 2012 Windsor Castle Concours, which we reported on last month. This delightful car deserved a feature all to itself so you can really see it in detail.

The car won the Prix de Cannes in 1935, then went to the USA, where it was lost for many years before being bought by a Japanese collector in the 1980s for $1.5m. 20 years later he passed it onto the Peterson Museum in California,

Its full title is the 1925/35 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Jonckheere Coupé. Based on the Raja of Nanpara's 1925 Phantom, the original Hooper cabriolet body-work was replaced in 1935 by Belgian coach-builders Jonckheere.

who expertly pieced it together for presenta-tion at the 2005 Pebble Beach concours, where it won the Lucius Beebe Trophy for the finest Rolls-Royce. A splendid piece of history and a magnificent example of an art deco styled car.

Its nickname was the ‘round-door Rolls’, since its doorsare elegant ovals with butterflied window glass within.

The new GranCab-rio MC completes the open-top range with sports c ha ra c t e r i s t i c s derived from racing experience with the style, charm and practi-cality of Maserati’s four seater con-vertible.

Maserati announced the names of its three new cars at the Paris Motor Show and showed the gorgeous Gran Carbrio MC.

The new mid-sized sports saloon will bear the Ghibli badge, while the new Maserati Quattroporte will be launched at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show in January.

The new Maserati SUV be called the Levante, not the Kubang as we reported earlier this year, derived from the Via Emilia Levante in Bologna where, nearly 100 years ago, the Maserati brothers conceived the com-pany that still bears their name.

The traditional sources of investment interest have been increasingly giving yields below the rate of inflation and many people are searching for areas with a better return. The Classic Car Market has

been sourced by both investment companies and individuals to great effect.

Investing in Classic Carsby Jill Carter

The auction price of desirable models has soared over the past four years but as with buying an ordinary road car it is necessary to do your homework. Much depends upon the budget that is avail-able since this will determine which cars fall within your price range. The advantage of a classic car to the motoring enthusiast is that you get to drive the investment rather than check the bottom line on a balance sheet. Insurance can be arranged through specialist companies which, combined with a limited mileage, can make for a second car with low running costs.

If you buy at an auction you will need to register as a buyer and purchase a catalogue. There will be a guide price but it is sensible to identify which cars you are interested in and the maximum price you are willing to pay, not forgetting that the final payment will be the hammer price together with the house premium of 5-18% plus tax. Carefully inspect the car(s) of interest and any paper work provided detailing the history. Most auction houses will have a Preferred Transport Service to arrange home transport or if the car is taxed and road legal an insurance company will be on hand to enable you to drive away. Regular auctions in Europe are held in the U.K. France and Germany; as yet they are few and far between in Southern Europe.

In 2007 banker Dietrich Hatlapa decided to take his love of classic cars a step further and expand his small collection, which started with a 1960 Porsche RS60 Spyder, but was astonished to find there was no credible historic price-performance information to guide his investment as well as no way to compare his proposed purchase with other assets. He made it his mission to create the first authoritative, independent index and founded the Historic

Automobile Group International (HAGI) research organisation. The HAGI index has risen 31.5 per cent since it began tracking the market early in 2009. And while it tracks only the top of the market, which is now worth £20 billion with annual turnover of £2 billion, Hatlapa says it also informs movements further down the classic car market. As an example, the price of gold in 1980 was £260 per ounce rising to approximately £1,150 per ounce earlier this year. Whereas, if you were astute enough to have bought an Aston Martin DB5 saloon for less than £10,000 at that time it would now be worth well over £300,000 if in the best of condition. A1964 DB5 belonging to Westlife’s Shane Filan sold at Bonhams’ Goodwood auction for £348,000.

For people with shallower pockets who are looking for a cheap classic to run and enjoy should look at high production runs such as an MGB GT roadster and expect to pay around £2,500 to £4,000 for a car in a roadworthy and tidy condition. The car will not escalate rapidly in price but you will enjoy the experience and should not make a great loss when it comes to sell and even may make a modest profit. As an investment look for cars that are part of a small run such as Lotus and the newer the car usually the cheaper to purchase. The Lotus Elite Super 95 was produced by Lotus to qualify for The Le Mans 24 hour race and only 23 were built. In 2008 a good example could be sourced for £25,000-30,000; now expect to pay £80-100,000+.

This year sales of Aston Martin DB4s and DB5s in particular have been increasing virtually week on week according to Richard Caiton of H & H Auction House.

The Cortina at 50.Launched back in 1962, the Cortina was Fords rival to the Morris 1100. It was a two-door saloon and looked like a big manly car with its long bonnet and enormous boot, unlike the Italian styled Morris. The price of the Cortina was only £639 for a base model, compared with the £675 retail price of the Morris 1100. The Mk1 version was replaced in 1966 by the Mk2 and the Mk3 in 1970. The Mk3 Cortina is to me, alongside the Capri, the very essence of the 70s. Production stopped in 1982, when the last Mk5 rolled off the production line. It had held the position of Britain’s Best Selling Car from 1972 to 1981.

White is the New Silver. There's been a change in global car colour choice. After ten years of silver holding the top spot, it has been pushed aside by white. The annual study by the paint experts at PPG Industries notes how the the colorless hue has made big gains this year, white cars being the number one choice in Europe and America and tied for first place with silver cars in Asia. Black took second place in every market, pushing silver out and to be forever associated with the naughties. Here in Europe we seem to have a taste for 50 shades of metallic, with gray in third place on its own and silver in fourth. There is set to be more metallics on the way, with mineral and alloy shades like gold, copper and bronze being previewed for 2015 and 2016.

Virtually Jaguar. You can now take a 3D Virtual tour around the Jaguar Heri-tage Museum, as it was in July 2012, before it closed for good. It's an excellent tour and you can even get in some of the cars. You may remember we featured the museum in the CCT, when Eric Arnold, presi-dent of the Jaguars Enthusiasts Club in Spain, visited and gave us a very interesting and infor-mative report from there. You can read the article again in our archives on our website, under the ´What's New' tab, issue February 2012. See the tour on the link from our webite or by visiting www.jaguarheritage.org.

New Motor Show to open in London.London’s ExCel exhibition centre is to host a new motor show, five years after hosting what to date has been the last British International Motor Show. The Future Drive Motor Show will take place at the venue in London’s docklands between 5th-12th May 2013. It has evolved from EcoVelocity, a low carbon motor show which after debuting at Battersea Power Station in London in 2011. According to organisers Media 10 the new show will give the automotive industry an opportunity to showcase its latest high-tech and cutting edge vehicles and motorbikes to the British public.

With Clare Lawrence

Cameron Donald is an Australian motorcycle racer who started riding at the age of six, following in the footsteps of his older brothers. The first bike he rode was a Suzuki RM50, which had been passed down to him by his brother Brad. This enthusi-asm for bikes carried on for Cameron and he went on to race at the Moto GP Support races and now takes part in the hugely popular and widely-covered Isle of Man TT.

Hi Cameron – It’s great to be chatting with you. Thanks for taking up the offer of an interview for the Costa Car Trader.

You started out riding when you were so little! I guess at that age, with no fear (as most children of that age seem to possess a lack of fear) it is perhaps a great time to start partaking in such a sport, since you would build up a level of confidence that possibly a rider who started out at a later age would not. Do you feel that this helped with your self-assurance in riding?

For sure I think it helps to start any sport as young as possible, without any preconcep-tions. I have memories of being very nervous when my dad was teaching me how to ride. My first bike had a very noisy 2 stroke engine and to me it was the most powerful machine in the whole world… It did not take long for my nerves to turn to excitement; riding now still brings me this excitement.

Did you have other interests when you were six?

It was either riding my BMX bicycle or motorbike, day or night it was always living or dreaming two wheels. But I did like watching cartoons on TV when it got too dark to play outside.

If your brothers had not been so heavily-involved in bikes and racing, would there be something else that you might have liked to have taken up and maybe eventually even made a different career out of?

I’m not sure as my passion for bikes was also from my dad; he always had bikes in the shed. My playmates at a young age would all ride BMX bicycles and pretend they were on a “real” motorbike so I guess the urge to ride was never far away.No other sport really attracted my atten-tion for long…

With your racing, have you had any aspirations to be like any one else in the sport?

When I was a boy I wanted to be as fast as my brothers! But I would also watch the GP racing with my dad and used to cheer for Wayne Rainey as he was my hero. I have drawn inspiration from many riders but never idolised just one. I would like the way a rider like Rainey would always be fiercely focused and then the way a rider like Kevin Schwantz would ride with a wild style and celebrate a win by standing up and waving to the crowd.

It sounds as if you get a lot of support and encouragement from your family – is this also true of friends?

My friends have always been a great support of my racing, I think sometimes it would be hard for them to understand why I was so obsessed in this one passion but most also share a love of riding.

Who have you met through your career that you do not think you would have had the opportunity to do so if you had not decided to race?

Cameron DonaldNearly everybody I know is through motorcy-cling, either the sport itself or from travelling to races.

Have you got a particular place that you prefer to ride at – either for practice or for races (or both!)?

My favourite place to ride is on dirt bikes, off road riding with my friends in the mountain forests near my home.

Where do you like to go or what do you like doing in order to unwind?

I love spending time on the water, either fishing in the river or waterskiing on the lake. I have a ski boat and spend a lot of time on the water over summer and camping next to the lake. These are the most relaxing times.

Is there anything in life that you still want to do, but have not, as yet, gotten round to doing?

I have a “to–do” list as long as my arm! I want to do so, so many things. Different motor-cycles I would like to collect and ride. Many journeys’ I would like to do on motorcycles when I stop racing so often like travel off road through the Australian desert. Mostly I want to do adventurous things on motorcycles.

Thank you again for your time and inter-view answers Cameron – let’s do this again soon!

British Touring Car Championship

November Dates:4th Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi

18th Austin, USA25th Interlagos, Brazil

Watch the races and qualifying on the BBC and Sky SportsF1.

Button in Japan 7th October Suzuka, JapanOnce again, the action started right at the start, with the first casualty being Fernando Alonso, who was nudged by Kimi Raikkonen, causing Fernando to spin and exit the race with a puncture. Romain Grosjean seemed to be slow to realise what was happening and as a result, ran into the back of Mark Webber's car. Romain got a full ten-second stop-go penalty, the heaviest in-race sanction available to the race officials, a result of his start history this season; this is his eighth early-race incident he’s been involved in in 14 races. Sebastian Vettel who was on pole, resumed first place after a brief safety car period. Local driver Kamui Kobayashi was in second with Jenson Button third ahead of Felipe Massa. Tyre strategy helped Felipe, as he passed both his rivals by making his first pit stop later than they did. He was able to start the race on new tyres while those who qualified in the top ten had to start on the tyres that had used to set their grid time. Sebastian had pulled out an enormous lead, taking the win, the first time a driver has taken back-to-back victories this season. Felipe took second place, a great result for him and his first podium in two years. Kamui Kobayashi held off a determined challenge from Jenson to take the last podium place, much to the delight of his home crowd. Jenson finished in fourth with his team mate (for this season) Lewis Hamil-ton fifith.

14th October Yeongam, KoreaThe Red Bulls were the cars to watch in Korea. Mark Webber was on pole, but was jumped at the start by team mate Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian pulled away to generate a gap large enough to pit twice and still rejoin in the lead. He went on to take his third consecutive victory and the lead in the Championship. Mark stayed behind Sebas-tian to take second. Fernando Alonso drove a careful race to take the last podium position. Lewis Hamilton finished 10th, driving with a piece of artificial turf stuck to his car in the closing laps. Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg were taken out on lap one by Kamui Kobayashi, who retired himself 16 laps later.

28th October New Delhi, IndiaWe will report on this race next month.

WINNER PROFILE 7th October SilverstoneJason Plato won the first race of the day, after Mat Jackson retired from the lead with a couple of laps left. Dave Newsham took second. Mat Jackson took the win in the second race after Plato retired from the lead. Matt Neal retired again after his car spectacularly caught fire. In race three, Jason Plato came from 20th on the grid to take a terrific victory.21 October Brands HatchIn the opening race, Matt Neal took the win with Andrew Jordan second ahead of Tom Onslow-Cole. In race two, it was a first BTCC win for Aron Smith. Taking second place and in the process the title, was Gordon Shedden. Andrew Jordan took fourth and also the Independent Driver Trophy for the first time as well. Race three saw a win for Frank Wrathall, his first in the BTCC. Final Standings: 1: Gordon Shedden 408, 2: Matt Neal 387, 3: Jason Plato 376

Gordon Shedden is 33 and was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He got his first taste of championship victories in 1997 when he won the Scottish KTM Championship. His next title was in 2000 when he won the Ford Fiesta Championship. He joined the BTCC in 2006 with Team Halfords, driving alongside reigning series champion Matt Neal. Joining Honda Racing in 2010 he came third in the series, in 2011 he came second and this year he won the Championship to become the first Scottish driver to claim the title in 17 years. Congratulations to you Gordon on your first BTCC title!

We featured Gordon Shedden in our 'Under The Spotlight' article by Clare Lawrence in April 2012. You can re-read this interview online at www.costacartrader.net under the ‘What’s New’ tab.

October Ace Café t was the 3rd Aniversary of the Ace Café Meeting; we don't claim to have invented the Ace Café theme as that will always be the property of the original Ace Café on the North Circular Road, London, but we do claim to have the best meeting in the Vega Baja that has grown in strength and attendance. Indeed over the 3 years we have never lost a day due to bad weather or non attendance. Of course the solid and enduring support we receive means that many of the cars featured on the first day are still regulars but we can almost guarantee that each meeting will bring something new into our fold. For assistance on all legal matters in Spain see our advert on page 2.

We can take care of the administrative system dealing with this, presenting your application in the Spanish Traffic Department. You will receive a tempo-rary Spanish driving licence until the new one is ready for collection.

A beautiful 1929 BMW Dixi car that was driven from Belgium certainly was the star of this month’s meeting. It supported a similar, but not identical, Austin 7 side valve engine. Bringing the time back to the 21st century, a gorgeous Fiat 500 special edition could be seen in all its modern glory. One of only 100 and I would guess, the only one in Spain.

ife New Ofce Opening Soon on the Orihuela Costa

JOB VACANCIESWe have 2 positons to ll between the Quesada and the Orihuela Costa ofce:

One for a young vibrant person keen to learn and the other for perhaps a more mature vibrant person who has experience in either customer services or insurance. Both will be expected to attend the relevant courses and training and must be able to read and speak Spanish to a high level. If not native English speakers, they must be able to speak, read and write English to an intermediate level. We are accepting CV´s by EMAIL ONLY to -

[email protected]

We have outgrown the Generali Ex-Pat ofce in Quesada and rather than moving to bigger premises, we have decided to keep the exist-ing ofce in Quesada and open a new ofce in the Orihuela Costa area. Since we have so many clients in the Orihuela Costa area, it is the sensible thing to do to make it easier for our clients in that area to pop in and see us if they have any questions or problems.

We have been looking for about a year now for the right ofce and having found it we hope to have it open for the middle of Novem-ber. The new Spanish-Insurance Ex-Pat ofce is in Centro Comercial Los Dolces, La Zenia. You can nd us on the corner from Mercadona/Lidl, right next to the new shop-ping centre. It´s very easy to reach with ample parking on the door step.

14 October Motegi, Japan Jorge Lorenzo took the initial lead ahead of Dani Pedrosa and they pulled out a gap with Cal Crutchlow running a lonely third. With 13 laps remaining Pedrosa took the lead and stayed there to take the chequered flag. Lorenzo took second with Álvaro Bautista third.21 October Sepang, Malaysia It was a wet race with rain falling steadily heavier through-out the day. Jorge Lorenzo took the lead with Dani Pedrosa sticking closely behind in second. Pedrosa passed him to take the lead half way through the race. The crashes then started, thankfully nothing serious, just sliding out in the rain; fallers included Ben Spies, Andrea Dovizioso, Cal Crutchlow and Randy de Puniet. The Red Flag was shown with 9 laps to go and the race stopped due to safety concerns. Pedrosa took the win to move just 23 points behind Lorenzo in the title race with 2 races to go. 28 October Phillip Island, AustraliaWe will report on this race next month

2012Going into the final round at Brands Hatch, Shane Byrne was leading the points ahead of Tommy Hill and Josh Brookes. Byrne won the first race extending his lead to 18 points. Victory in the second race by Byrne meant he only needed to finish 13th in the final race to take the title. Josh Brookes led the race, but Shane Byrne fought back to take his third win of the day and be crowned BSB Champion for the third time, equaling John Reynolds record.Final Standings:1. Shane Byrne 683 (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki)2. Josh Brookes 655 (Tyco Suzuki)3. Tommy Hill 612 (Swan Yamaha)

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was born in London in 1976. He got his first bike after a driving ban and worked as a road tester for Fast Bikes magazine. He joined the BSB in 1999 and in 2003 and amazed everyone with a string of wins and taking the Champi-onship title for the first time. In the same year, he achieved a double ´wildcard´ victory in the Superbike World Championship. He took his second Championship title in 2008 with Airwaves Ducati and his third this season. Where does the nickname 'Shakey' come from? Back when he was 11, he got out of a swimming pool in Spain and was shivering in the
