Our team have been busy this month at the Goodwood Revival in England. Our reporter and photographers enjoyed a fun weekend

stepping back in time with some great racing action and an amazing collection of some of the greatest cars in the world. We are truly

grateful for their time and effort to bring you a real feel for the event. Windsor Castle held its first Concours last month featuring some

exclusive and some never seen before cars, we have an overview of the event, but plan to look in detail at one or two of some of the

more magnificent examples over the next couple of months. We have a real treat as Clare Lawrence interviews the well-known TV

Smart Forstars

CONCEPT

It's that time again when Smart give us another wacky concept, and this cheeky new one should do just the trick. It's an electric powered two seater coupe that will doa smooth 80mph thanks to a Brabus 81bhp battery pow-ered drivetrain. They are pluging the Smart Forstars as a sports coupe which bears much resem-blance to the now expiring Smart coupe with its two tone bodywork and wheel at each corner stance.

The styling is the cheeky bit, there's a real 'face' ele-ment to the front end, with the eyebrow running lights and the grinning grille. There's a glass roof panel ideal for star-gazing hence the Forstars name tag. Other neat touches come in the shape of opening rear lights, the right one hides the charging socket and the left one opens to allow space for storing drink cans,. An intergrated

video projector is inserted in the front bonnet which connects through a USB connection on the dashboard thus showing films and video clips from your phone or mobile device. Inside is fully cus-tomisable with a classic concept, the seats will give a hammock like comfort and the instruments are angled towards the driver with a topless steering wheel.

featured previously in the CCT.Known as an 'Urban hunter of cars', Dustin Shuler skinned cars of their sheet metal exteri-ors, then arranged them into thin, flat composi-tions he called 'pelts'.

One of his last sculptures, completed in 2009, before his death in 2010 aged 61.

You’ve Been Tangoed.Here's a sneaky look (well not that sneaky, McLaren have sent photos to everyone in the media) at what McLaren's new concept, the P1 looks like ahead of its Paris debut this month. Billed as the 'ultimate supercar', McLaren says the project has one simple goal “To be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track.” The P1 is expected to cost £800,000, but with production limited to 500 models, the P1 production run may well be sold out to existing McLaren clients and collectors. It will be fast, with a powerful 960hp expected with the help of F1-style KERS (kinetic energy release system). The final production version will be shown next year, but it should look almost identical to the car shown here. Its arrival will coincide with the McLaren’s 50th anniversary. We love the McLaren logo shaped headlights. Nice touch.

1000 Ferraris.The world’s largest parade of Ferraris took place last month at Silverstone. Almost 1000 Ferraris lined up on the track to earn a place in the Guin-ness World Record Book. Ferrari Formula 1 driver, Felipe Massa led the convoy in a black 458 Spider. It took 45 minutes to assemble the grid which was a delightful sea of every type of Ferrari ever produced. You could see F40s, Enzos and ultra-rare examples, including F1 and FXX/599XX research cars and a 575 GT Zagato. The countdown from ten was accompanied by tooting horns, flashing headlights and the sound of revving engines. The cars drove around the circuit at 20mph, probably the slowest most of them have ever been driven. The final count was 964 Ferraris, beating the previ-ous record of 490 set in Japan four years ago.

Formula E.If all goes to plan, 2014 will see the first ever electric car racing series, called 'Formula E'. FIA, motor sport's governing body licensed the commercial rights to a Hong Kong-based consortium. The races are planned to be held in city centres, with 10 locations being proposed for the first year. An agree-ment is already supposedly in place with Rio while a race around Berlin's Brandenburg Gate would be the first choice for Germany. The plans are for a grid of 10 teams and 20 drivers in 2014, expanding to 14 teams the following year, with entrants able to use their own cars or one based on a Formulec EF01 prototype which can reach a top speed of 240kmph. Races will be an hour in dura-tion but because the batteries will only last 15-20 minutes, there will be two pitstops scheduled with drivers having to change cars. No three second pit stops here then.

Concours 2012 Windsor CastleThe Windsor Castle Concours of Elegance took place earlier last month in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, in the beautiful setting of the grounds of the historicWindsor Castle. Sixty of the world’s rarest motor cars, many of them never seen before

in England were on display.

ACCORDING TO LINEA DIRECTA, 3 OUT OF 4 ACCIDENTS

RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH ARE CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR

Whenever we find ourselves in a difficult or dangerous situation when we are driv-ing we only have a fraction of a second to take a deci-sion and carry it out correctly. Consequently, when drivers take the wrong decision, the number of accidents resulting in death or injury is tripled, as figures show that 73% of accidents are caused by drivers making a bad decision, com-pared to 27% in which they acted correctly.

This is the main conclusion of the study “Decision-making when driving” in which 174,000 accidents resulting in injury or death have been analysed. This means that in the last 4 years, nearly 130,000 accidents resulting in injury or death could have been avoided if the drivers involved had been able to assess the dangers on the road correctly.

The most common errors are due to drivers being distracted, joining roads incorrectly, turning badly, illegally overtaking and not main-taining a safe distance between the vehicle in front. As for types of road, Línea Directa’s report confirms that conventional roads are the most dangerous, due to the fact that 76% of accidents take place on them. On dual carriageways and motorways, the most common types of accident caused by driver error are rear-end collisions and vehicle crashes, mainly due to sudden braking and the switching of lanes.

Driver ProfileMen aged between 18 and 24 who have held a driving licence for less than two years and the over 65s are those most likely to be involved in accidents due to driver error. The former because they have a lower perception of risk and the latter because they have lost certain skills. On the other hand, women aged between 35 and 64, who have held a driving licence for 15 years or more are those who take the best decisions.

Vicki Butler-Henderson is a well-known television presenter on Fives Fifth Gear and she has been with the show since 2002. Vicki also presented the BBC show Top Gear from 1998 to 2002. She has appeared on the radio too; on the Absolute Radio Breakfast Show, Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show and the Woman’s Hour on Radio 4. Vicki has been involved in racing since the age of 12 and she holds a RaceInternational C Licence.

Hi Vicki! Thank you for taking up the offer of an interview with the Costa Car Trader.

Not only do you appear on the television, with your presenting, you also host driver training days with the Porsche Driving Centre at Silverstone. Were you approached to do these?

Porsche had just built a purpose-built facility near Silverstone which offered new Porsche owners the chance to explore the limits of their car. At the same time I wanted to help improve the standard of driving for all drivers, not just Porsche owners, so between us we developed the training days which are called 'YouDrive@Porsche'. I co-host the theory session which is great fun and interactive, as well as being educational.

What do you enjoy the most about being a well-recognised TV personality?

I'm not that big a fan of being recognised because that is not what I do the job for. I just enjoy driving fast cars and making entertain-ing TV for people who love cars.

Do you think you may have gone into racing full time if you had not started a career in television?

I wanted to be a Formula One driver and that is what I aimed to do. But by the age of 18I realised I did not have the money and the right timing to progress through the formulas to the very top. There are just 24 F1 drivers in the world - and for every one of them I can name a dozen drivers who are talented enough to be there on the grid, but just did not have the right ingredients at the right time.

Did the magazine writing that you do evolve from your knowledge of cars and the contacts that you have in the industry?

That is correct. I started working as anEditorial Assistant on a magazine called Car Mechanics and then got my dream job as a Road Tester for Auto Express and then What Car? a few years later.

It must be hard to fit everything in at times, since you do a variety of work. Are you very organised?

I am quite organised, yes, as I have to be! I am a big fan of efficiency wherever possible throughout my work.

What would you say has been the highlight of your career to date?

Being the first woman in the world to win a Maserati race in the history of Maserati; it happened in 2004 in a Maserati Trofeo race at Silverstone and it was a support race for the British Formula One race, so the crowd was fabulous.

Your hobbies include clay pigeon shooting; I remember this sport from when I was younger (since my Dad used to do it). Does it help to release any pent up frustration you may have? (If you have any that is!)

I am a farmer's daughter and have been surrounded by clay pigeon shooting most of my early life. I really enjoy it but do it purely for fun.

In January this year, in your blog on your site, you mentioned that you have been involved in a children’s animation, where your voice was recorded, for the TV, called: “Olly the Little White Van.” This must have been so much fun and such an exciting project to be part of. Can you tell me more about it?

It is such a thrill for me to have been made into a cartoon character for one of the episodes for Olly the Little White Van. It's a children's cartoon on British TV and I did it so my baby daughter can watch it when she's a bit older!

Who did you look up to in the world of racing when you were younger?

I was a massive fan of Ayrton Senna because he was a perfect racing driver.

In fear of repeating myself each year, it just has to be said; this year’s 14th Revival was the largest and the best! If you have never visited the event or watched it on tele-vision it is almost impossible to describe, a fan of ‘Quan-tum Leap’ may think they’ve been whisked back in time to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. An esti-mated eighty percent plus of visitors and participants enter into the spirit of the event and dress in period fashion.It has been aptly described as where Motor Racing meets Hollywood. It started out as an idea of Lord March’s, the owner of the circuit. This year the record breaking attendees was capped at 146,000 and sold out before the start of the event.

Two wheel enthusiasts could watch the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy on the circuit as well as choose to visit the Scramble Trophy at Lavant Corner. Aero displays included planes as diverse as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thun-derbolt, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. There was a daily tribute to Dan Gurney celebrating his motor sport career and marking the 50th anniversary of his first Grand Prix victory. A collection of cars relevant to Gurney’s racing career paraded around the circuit each day. a track parade of Ferrari 250 GTO’s took centre stage to mark their 50th anniversary. Also a dedicated Shelby Cup race, consisting entirely of AC Cobras, with the race victory on Saturday taken by Rob Hall and Andrew Wolfe, celebrated 50 years of the marque, as can be seen on our front cover.

Entry via the main gate simulated a West-East Berlin Border Cross-ing with soldiers demanding to see our papers alongside a guarded crashed ‘sputnik’. This theme was continued with the program designed as captured documents by British Intelligence.

RAF Memorial Flight Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy

Early arrivals were able to meander across the track and behind the Jackie Stewart Pavilion a very rare sight was seen. A once-in-a-lifetime gathering of Silver Arrows, the famous Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union race cars housed in their own distinctive paddock, constructed specifically for the 2012 Revival, and accurately recreating the paddock shelters of the Bremgarten circuit home to the Swiss Grand Prix in the 1930s. Later the cars took to the track daily and could be viewed in all their glory.

A new addition to the Revival was the Settring-ton Cup, a two-part contest for young drivers aged four to twelve in their Austin J40 pedal cars. Victory on the second day was claimed by a furiously peddling Florence Hall, the overall winner on aggregate was George Collings, who won Part 1. The big occasion overwhelmed several younger peddlers who broke down in tears. These cars are now worth from £2,500 and one owner is reported to have spent £5,000

restoring the car.

I managed a short interview with Rowan Atkinson ahead of his drive in the St. Mary’s Trophy race. Very like his alter ego, Mr. Bean, Rowan is a man of few words and dislikes interviews. He told me that he loves driving but does not consider himself a Driver. after many years in amateur sport he is thought of as a talented driver and is a frequent pilot at Goodwood, work permitting. The only place he is safe is inside the car, since due to his popularity he is mobbed and said that this is also true when travelling in the course of his normal life. During the inter-view he graciously signed autographs when requested by fans.

I met up with Derek Bell at the Revival track day where he was familiarising himself with the cars he would be driving at the event. This five times Le Mans winner was a most charming man and a pleasure to converse with. I asked why he liked Goodwood so much, to which he replied that he had his first race at Goodwood and loves driving the circuit. The Revival is a most enjoyable event and he is asked to

drive beautiful cars.

A mind blowing £175 million worth of cars lined up on the grid for the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy Celebra-tion. This was made more exciting as Adrian Newey had to fight his way through the field after spinning at St. Mary’s, with help from Martin Brundle, the 1963 lightweight Jaguar E Type to claim the honours. Another ex F1 driver, Frenchman Jean Alesi shared a Ferrari GTO with Mark Hales

finishing one lap down in seventh place.

Crowds enjoyed an inta-dusk race ‘The Freddie March Memorial Trophy’, a ninety-minute race in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first Goodwood Nine Hour race. First place was claimed by John Young and Alex Bumcombe in a Jaguar C-type, they dominated the field, despite a pit stop to fix a faulty light. A new feature for Goodwood was ‘Over the Road’ where visitors could eat, drink and make merry until 10.30 pm. thus reducing the

rush and traffic jams exiting the site.

A total of 16 races were run during the weekend and much wheel to wheel action was observed. The St. Mary’s Trophy was in two parts with the celebrity or profes-sional driver in Race One on Saturday and the owner driving on the Sunday in Race Two with an aggregate taken. The deserving winners Justin Law and Anthony Reid took a hard-fought victory in a Jaguar Mk 1. Rowan Atkinson shared his drive in a 1952 Jaguar Mk VII

with its new owner Stefan Ziegler.

23rd Singapore, SingaporeLewis Hamilton was once again on pole and had a good run maintaining the lead. He was looking very comfortable before it all went wrong and his gear-box packed up on lap 22 and he retired from the race. Sebastian Vettel took the lead having moved up to second at the start. He remained there and went on to take the chequered flag after 2 hours racing. The race was timed out due to a couple of safety car periods. Jenson Button took second place after a steady performance. Fernando Alonso took third place and more valuable points to keep him at the top of the table. Sebastian now moves into second, 29 points behind the Spaniard. It was a great race for Paul di Resta who took fourth. Unlucky Michael Schumacher smashed into the back of Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne on lap 39, just after the safety car had gone in. He will receive a 10 place grid penalty in Japan.

23 September Rockingham Jason Plato dominated race one, setting a new lap record in his MG and took the first win of the day. Andrew Jordan came in second with Gordon Shedden third. Heavy rain then fell through-out the next two races, which completely changed the playing field and enabled the two Hondas to shine. Gordon Shedden took the win in both races with team-mate Matt Neal second, for a double Honda 1-2. Jason Plato completed the podium spot in both the races.Shedden now leads the championship with 336 points, 3 points ahead of Neal and 29 points ahead of Plato on 304.

2nd Spa-Francorchamps, BelgiumJenson Button started on pole and remained in first place to take the win, his first at the circuit. The start of the race was dominated by a large crash, started when the right rear wheel of Romain Gros-jean's Lotus hit Lewis Hamilton's left front, knocking the McLaren into a spin and taking out Sergio Perez. The Lotus went flying over the top of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari and he was lucky to escape injury. It put all four of them out of the race. The safety came out and after the race Romain was handed a one-race ban for causing the accident.

Sebastian Vettel, who had started in tenth, made a series of impres-sive overtaking manoeuvres around the outside of the Bus Stop chicane at the end of the lap. He was on a one-stop strategy, like Jenson, and he was able to take second place as Kimi Raikkonen made his final stop. Kimi took the last podium place.

9th Monza, ItalyA great race in Italy saw lots of action and overtaking moves. It was a well driven and steady race from Lewis Hamilton who was on pole and wasn’t really challenged; eventually taking the chequered flag ahead of Sauber’s Sergio Perez who finished second. Sergio had qualified 12th and once again took advantage of a different strat-egy and free choice of tyres at the start to climb through the field. A controversial moment occurred when Sebastian Vettel forced Fernando Alonso off the track in an incident similar to one involving the same drivers in last year's race. Last year, the German passed the Ferrari driver around the outside of the 180mph Curva Grande with two wheels on the grass and felt Fernando had pushed a bit too far. Fernando was not penalised for that incident. In this year's incident, on lap 26 of the race, the roles were reversed and Sebastian tried to pass Fernando on the outside, but he did not leave enough room for Fernando, who ended up with his entire car on the grass, damaging the rear of the Ferrari both aerody-namically and mechanically. Sebastian was given a drive-though penalty. Fernando, who started in 10th, took the final podium position with Felipe Massa fourth. Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber retired.

Then pole-sitter Dani Pedrosa had to start from the back of the grid after wheeling his bike into pit-lane to re-start it. His bad luck continued as he was taken out of the race on the first lap by Héctor Barberá. Jorge Lorenzo had taken the lead and pulled out a gap to take the win. A delighted Valentino Rossi took second place, his best finish for Ducati. It was a nail biting finish for third, Álvaro Bautista had climbed through the field into third place, but was fighting with Andrea Dovizioso in the closing laps. They crossed the line together, the photo finish showing that the San Carlo Honda Gresini rider took third by 0.003seconds (see above). It seemed appropriate that Álvaro Bautista scored his first MotoGP podium in third and his first with the team in what was an emotional way to remember Marco Simoncelli.
