Why were you interested in this service?I was looking to change my car, which I have had for 6 years from new, it's a great car, but not very fast. I saw the advert in the maga-zine and thought that the increased power might be what my car needed. I was also interested in saving money on fuel.

Did you contact the company or look at their website before booking it in?No, I felt the advert was self-explanatory and the money-back guarantee gave me full piece of mind.

How were your dealings with Autotune?I was sceptical, since I have found that often companies over here (in Spain) do not offer the same service I have been used to in the UK. So, I was very happy when I received a friendly reception, was told exactly what they were going to do and that it would take only 1 1/2 hours. I was also delighted to be told that I would receive a 50€ discount for mentioning the Costa Car Trader!

You had a fitted three weeks ago - how are you finding it?I've never had so much fun in years - it's revamped my car. It's now exciting to drive and the torque is incredible, even in 6th gear the pick up is amazing. It's like having a new car and now I will be happy to keep my car for another 12 months.

What about the fuel efficiency?I have definitely made savings, but can't be precise - an educated guess is about 15%, but I have been enjoying the extra BHP at the moment, so have not benefited from more savings, but look forward to greater efficiency over the next weeks as I stop being so throttle happy!

Was it worth it?Yes.

Would you recommend having it done?I already have! Yes, most definitely.

BMW “M” celebrates its 40th anniversary. The subsidiary of the German car manu-facturer started as a small racing depart-ment with only eight employees, but eventually grew into the well respected and much loved high performance division it is today. It all started with the European Touring Car Championship in 1963 with a variety of production vehicles of different sizes and engines racing together. In 1968 the rules were changed to include more modified and powerful cars with fuel injec-tion and supercharging. The following season BMW became a champion with the 2002; a popular two door model which eventually paved the way for the BMW 3 Series.

The BMW M1, with a top speed of 265kmph was the fastest road going car built in Ger-many. After the M1 had been discontinued, BMW Motorsport focused its energy on tour-ing car racing which led to the birth of the M3, 3 Series (E30), which became the most successful touring car ever. The first M3 was powered by a 2.3ltr. The M badge made its way on to the 5 series and continues on both models today. BMW M Power has released a video of 40 years of M Power. During the Victorian age the western world was suffering from a great excess of horse manure, so much so, that in 1894 ‘The Times’ estimated that by 1950 every street in the city would be buried beneath nine feet of this odious by-product of horse trans-portation. Each horse produces 15 to 35 pounds of manure plus approxi-mately two pints of urine daily. New York had a mind boggling 2.5 million pounds of this waste to remove daily from their streets. The piles of manure produced huge numbers of flies, which spread typhoid fever and other diseases; one estimate is that three billion flies hatched in horse manure per day in US cities in 1900, and in New York, 20,000 deaths per year were blamed on manure.

Horses were incredibly noisy, the clip-clop of iron shoes on cobbles made conversation impossible and far more dangerous than modern traffic, horses kick, bite and bolt; the fatality rate was 75% higher per capita than today, and seven times higher per vehicle. The average streetcar horse had a life expectancy of about three years and on average 41 died each day. In 1880, New York cleared 15,000 carcasses from its streets. Dead horses were unwieldy, and street cleaners often waited several days for the corpses to putrefy so they could more easily be sawed into pieces.

In 1898 the situation was so bad that a global convention was held in New York to discuss urban planning and the problem of horse waste.

No solution was put forward and the convention ended a week early with no answers. The ‘horseless carriage’ or early motor car was viewed as a rich man’s toy and its potential as a mass mode of transport was yet to be considered. It is usually agreed that a German, Carl Benz, built the firstmo-torcar in 1885. It was really a tricycle with a petrol motor at the rear.

Over the next few years more and more cars were produced and enhanced by the growing number of manufacturers until they became a desirable mode of conveyance, at first for the wealthy and then more widely. Horses continued to cause problems for city planners. During the 1890’s London had 11,000 cabs and several thousand buses using more than 50,000 horses in public transport alone. Something had to be done!

The solution was the natural progres-sion of the motor vehicle into trams, Lorries and other commercial vehicles thus reducing the need for horses and by 1912 London had more motor vehicles than horses. Today it is rare to see a working horse on the streets of London except in ceremonial roles, policing, as a funeral or wedding conveyance.

The internal combustion engine became the saviour of our cities. How ironic that a century later it is seen by some as the Devil’s invention and a main producer of greenhouse gases. Will the World be so lucky with this latest problem and a yet as unrecog-nised solution comes to our rescue?

Accident black spots: The 15 most dangerous Spanish roads

Drivers on the M-40 in Madrid, the Avenida Diagonal de Barcelona or the Puente del V Centenario in Seville, must be aware of the fact that they are travelling on one of the three most dangerous urban areas in the country. This is the main conclusion of the study “Black spots: traffic accidents in Spanish capitals” carried out by Línea Directa Aseguradora in which more than 1.2 million motor vehicle accidents in provincial capital cities in the last six years were analysed.

The main aim of the report, which has attracted a great deal of media attention, is to analyse a phenomenon caus-ing 18% more fatal accidents than on interurban roads. To this end, the areas of the Spanish capital cities in which Línea Directa has registered the highest number of acci-dents, have been identified, which has made it possible to create, for the first time, a map of accident black spots, i.e. those streets and roads on which over 100 accidents a year have been recorded.

According to the list of black spots, Barcelona, Madrid and Seville head the Top 15 of provincial capitals. Madrid also has three of the five most dangerous areas in the whole country.

A See Through Car.A ‘transparent' vehicle has been developed in Tokyo to help driv-ers with parking. The car appears transparent from the inside, allowing drivers to 'see through' the rear bodywork. The way it works is two cameras on the boot lid capture a full view of the scene behind the car and project a panoramic view of the area behind the car onto the rear seats. The view would include children, animals, or objects such as bollards that may be invis-ible below the rear window. Drivers who struggle to parallel park may find this invention particularly useful. Masahiko Inami, from Tokyo's Keio University, said, as reported in the newspaper: 'The driver will feel like he's driving a glass car.' We've featured some transparent cars in the CCT before, can you remember them?

25th November Interlagos, BrazilThe season finale produced a thrilling wet race, after such an exciting season it seemed fitting to end with a rollercoaster of a ride. The two McLar-ens were on the front row and on the first lap Sebastian Vettel turned in on Bruno Senna and was sent spinning into the oncoming traffic after picking up damage to his left side. Proving that the Red Bull car is strong as well as fast, Sebas-tian re-joined in last place and then began to move up the order. Meanwhile at the front, Jenson Button had opened up a lead and an incident caused by Nico Hülkenberg sent Lewis Hamilton out of the race. Lewis was bitterly disappointed, since he wanted a good result in his final race for McLaren before moving to Mercedes next season. Jenson Button went on to take the win. Fernando Alonso also had the bit between his teeth as he fought to win the title. Although he had a great race, finishing second, Sebastian’s sixth place was enough for him to secure the title. All credit to Fernando Alonso after a remarkable season saw him miss out on the title by three points in an inferior car to the Red Bull. A delighted Felipe Massa took third and joined his team mate on the podium at his home circuit. Congratulations to Sebastian on his title!

through the pack. Lewis was leading but a fuel pump failed which forced him to retire on lap 20. Kimi Raik-konen inherited the lead having jumped to second at the start. Fernando Alonso took second place and Sebastian continued his terrific drive to take the last place on the podium. Kimi's last victory was in the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, when he was driving for Ferrari.

28th October New Delhi, IndiaSebastian Vettel took a dominant lights-to-flag victory and notched up another first; the first time he's won four consecutive races in the same season. Sebastian started from pole and he and Mark Webber made a good start and pulled out a gap ahead of the rest of the pack. Lewis Hamilton was third on the grid but lost out to a flying start from Jenson Button, and the two McLarens exited turn 3 onto the long straight side-by-side. However, Fernando Alonso got a huge run on them both to pass them and take third position relegating Lewis into fourth and Jenson into fifth. It would have remained like that, but Mark Webber suffered with KERS failure in the last quarter of the race and was passed by Fernando who went onto finish second. Mark hung on to take the last podium spot, with Lewis Hamilton in fourth right on his tail. Jenson finished in fifth.

18th November Austin, USAA new circuit on the F1 calendar in Texas saw Sebastian Vettel on pole looking to clinch the title in the penultimate race. He made a good start and took the lead but was unable to open up much of a gap since Lewis Hamilton kept him in his sights before overtaking him on lap 38 to take the lead. Lewis went on to take the victory, with Sebastian second. Fernando Alonso took third and with it he maintained his chances as the only other person who can win the title.

14th November Yas Marina, Abu DhabiA thrilling race at the floodlit circuit saw Lewis Hamilton start on pole, with Sebastian Vettel in last place due to a fuelling issue in qualifying.

For a third year running, Sebastian Vettel has taken the crown and with it he has become Formula One's youngest triple world cham-pion at the age of 25. He is also the first driver to win his first three titles consecu-tively. He is now joined the exclusive club of triple Champions, with such greats as Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart and Jack Brabham. Since he’s so young, he could soon be up with Alain Prost at 4 titles and even challenge the undisputed king of Formula One, Michael Schumacher with his 7 Championship wins.

Sébastien Buemi was born in 1988 in Aigle, Switzerland. He started in karting and went on to race in the German Formula BMW before landing his first ride in Formula One for the Toro Rosso team in 2009. He drove for them for 3 years before moving for the 2012 season as reserve driver for the Red Bull Formula One team, who have once again won the Constructors’ Title. Can he tell us his plans for 2013?

Hi Sébastien – It’s great to be interviewing you, thank you for taking up this opportu-nity to feature in the Christmas edition of the Costa Car Trader.

Sébastien, can you tell me how your love of racing first got started?

I received a kart for Christmas from my parents when I was 5 years old. I then started to drive and straight away I loved it. I have never stopped since that first taste of racing.

Are any of your family into racing or any other type of motor sports?

My cousin Natacha Gachnang is also a racing driver she competed in various categories from Karting up to Formula 3. My grandfather Georges Gachnang raced in Le Mans in 1960 and won various hill climb races back in the 60s.

I know that you were born in Switzerland, but did you grow up there too?

Yes, I grew up in Aigle a small town close to the Geneva Lake. I have been living in Monaco now for 3 years.

What is it like where you are living now?

Monaco is a great place, I really like the weather and I can train well there. The Nice airport is very close too, so it’s very easy to fly to the races.

How does it feel to have raced in the Formula 1? Formula 1 was for me a dream; I really love more than anything driving in F1. This year has been difficult as a 3rd driver for Redbull racing I did not get the chance to race but I am working hard to be back on the grid as soon as possible.

Do you get a lot of support for your career from your friends and family?

Yes, my family was always there; my friends too, but without them I would certainly never have made it to F1.

What are your plans for racing for next year?

I hope to be back on the grid and race F1 again. If not I am looking forward to continuing as a reserve driver and I will compete in the Le Mans 24h again.

Do you get much time to go away on holiday?

No, not much but I really like what I am doing so it is not a problem. I still get some days off during August and December.

How much practice is involved when you are racing?

The fitness training in Formula 1 is very impor-tant, especially when you race in Singapore or Malaysia. So I try to train up to 4 hours a day.

What is the best thing about racing for you?

To compete against the best drivers in the world and drive the quickest cars!!!

Goodwood VSCC Autumn Sprint by Mark J Willison

The Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) Sprint took place at Goodwood and is the perfect excuse for a day out to extend the season a little further. The Club has different classifications for membership; such as owners of cars built before 1931 and a Driving Membership for cars registered pre-1940. It is also possible to join as an Associate, for those who have an interest in cars of the period. The Club has a membership of 7,500 and have 35 events across the season; including hill climbs, trials and autotests.

The Autumn Sprint consists of a standing start from the pit-lane, plus one flying, timed lap. A field of 114 competitors were divided over 12 classes. Overall Fastest Time went to Ben Fidler driving his vintage ERA. There is a very much a “run what you brung” enthusiasm and a number of competitors drove their steeds to the event. Kenneth Pritchard-Jones’ 1907 Wolseley Wolsit Coppa-Florio is a proper Edwardian Racer and is still used on the road occasionally. (Pictured below).

The cars of the period are very much of a by-gone age, with fascinating features; cable brakes, centre throttle and with advance and retard on the steering wheel. The instrumentation and dials were there to inform the driver and assist in making decisions, unlike cars of today which make those decisions for you. Being free from modern aides, such as ABS and traction control, motoring must have been a far more pleasurable and more involved experience than it is today.

Motorcycle Live 2012 took place at the NEC last month and opened with a bang as a string of celebrities took part in a re-creation of the 2012 Motorcycle Live advertising campaign (above), which stars real bikers chosen through a social media promotion earlier this year. Each celebrity held the individual letters of the show’s logo until the appointed moment when the letters were flipped to reveal the legend: “It’s show time…”, complete with

confetti and streamers.Rugby star Matt Banahan and BBC MotoGP commentator Matt Roberts were joined on stage by 13 racing stars, including Cal Crutchlow, Leon Haslam, Leon Camier, Brad-ley Smith, Scott Redding, Tom Sykes, John McGuinness, Randy Mamola, Tommy Hill, Chris Walker, Glen Richards

and Tarran MacKenzie.

MOTOGP WINNER PROFILE

On his 15th birthday (the minimum age for Grand Prix participa-tion back then) he entered the 2002 World Championship on a Derbi 125. The following year, he took his first Grand Prix victory at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where his impressive "round the outside" overtaking manoeuvre on Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa won him the nickname "Por Fuera". He moved to the 250cc category in 2005 and became World Champion in 2006 and 2007. He joined the MotoGP class in 2008 alongside Valentino Rossi and made a huge impression as he took pole on his debut and finished second. Some big crashes and injuries put him out of the title race and the following year he battled with and ultimately lost the title to Rossi. 2010 was his year, when he had a great season and took his first MotoGP crown. Last year Casey Stoner and his Repsol Honda were a near unbeatable combination and Lorenzo took second place. With the switch to 1000cc at the start of 2012 Lorenzo and his Yamaha made a terrific start by winning opening round in Qatar after a hard fought battle with the Repsol Hondas, which continued throughout the season before Lorenzo was crowned Champion for the second time.Congratulations Jorge!

28 October Phillip Island, AustraliaThe Australian race determined the 2012 champion and said its good-bye to a retiring Casey Stoner in fine style. Stoner took the win for the 6th year in succession at his home circuit complete with its newly named turn 3 after the 2011 Champion. Jorge Lorenzo got the holeshot into turn one after a lightning start, but Dani Pedrosa soon went past him. Stoner then overtook Lorenzo on the home straight heading into lap two, before Pedrosa pushed too hard and lost the rear of his bike and exited the race. Stoner pulled away at the front to take the win and Lorenzo’s second place was enough to clinch the 2012 title.

11 November Ricardo Tormo, Valencia The last race of the season saw Dani Pedrosa on pole. However, with the track still wet from recent rain, he decided to change his tyres to slick ones after the sighting lap and so had to start from the pit lane. Casey Stoner pitted on lap 4 to change his tyres to slick ones too. Jorge Lorenzo was leading, but pushed too hard and crashed out, leaving Pedrosa to take the win. The Japanese Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga who was appearing in place of the injured Ben Spies, took a suprise second, with Casey Stoner third in his final race. Honda won its 19th premier class Constructor's Title.
