We have a British theme this month, since everything seems to be about Britain at the moment, our articles include a new Top Ten

featuring British motors, a look at the cars who made a guest appearance at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in Torrevieja

last month and an art installation near Tower Bridge. We have a report on the greatest endurance race of the year: Le Mans, in which

Audi made history by being the first hybrid car to win at Le Mans. Talking of winning, we are delighted to announce that at the 2nd

Meeting of the Spanish TimeAttack series the winner was our local racing driver, Mr Luke Mustoo! We are delighted for him and thank

him for his report on page 9. A favourite for all bikers inside this month with the iconic Isle of Man TT. Clare Lawrence’s Under The

Spotlight star is Fifth Gear’s own Jonny Smith and Jill Carter reports on the AC Cobra, which is celebrating its half century. With local

clubs and events, all the motorsport and a look at the new Jaguar F-Type and of course, not forgetting all the best Car Dealers and

Autoservices in the area. Happy motoring! Professor

This is the new F-Type from Jaguar, its first two seater sports car in almost four decades. It will be launched first as a convertible in mid 2013 with the coupe to follow at a later date.

was described by Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari as “the most beautiful car ever built”. The F-Type will be on sale at an esti-mated price of £55,000 (around €68,000).

It is hoped, of course, that the new sportscar will be able to harness some of the affection felt for the iconic and much-loved E-Type. The E-Type, intro-duced at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show,

It is much less expen-sive and more readily available than the C-X75 supercar and should do well. We look forward to seeing it on the roads and can't wait to see the coupe version.

Power is provided by a super-charged 3.0 litre V6 engine, with a V8 also available. 0 to 60 is expected to be below five seconds with a top speed of

over 180 mph.

It looks very similar to the C-X16 concept that was revealed at last

year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Many of you would have seen the films made by Pixar, espe-cially the movie “Cars”. These are cartoon characters of course and yet, if we look at EP Industries run by the great Eddie Paul, he can trans-form these cartoon cars into real vehicles. So that means you can see Mater the tow truck, Sally Carrera the Porsche 911 and Lightning McQueen, which is the Pontiac Trans Am, all con-verted into the real thing!

Now Donald Duck's Car has taken a leap outside the comic world to become a real automobile. It’s sure to capture the attention of lady ducks as it cruises down the street. It has exactly the same features, including the 313 number plate which is Donald Duck's birthday: March 13.

This Transformer truck is well equipped with Opti-mus Prime accessories, including a voice activated alarm system with Opti-mus Prime's voice from the movie. Also a 17" LCD DVD player, a Bluetooth CD stereo system with satellite Radio capability, a new memory foam mat-tress in the sleeper, chrome pedals with rubber flames, two-tone blue/red flames in the interior and exterior and an overall new paint job. It even has the Trans-formers logo on the front and Transformers bed-sheets in the sleeper.

2nd Meeting16th June 2012

GuadixIn preparation for the day, we had stiffened the rear suspension, since I was suffering a lot of understeer at Cartagena, this made the car very tail happy in the fast corners but helped the problems we were suffering with slow corner entry understeer.Only a few minutes into the morning session, it was red flagged since the turbo on our main rivals, the Lopez brothers, Hyundai Getz Cup had blown and they had to be towed back to the pits. It was very unlucky for them having only been out for 2 laps, but very lucky for me! Things started to look up. The car didnt miss a beat throughout the day and I was able to comfortably take the win and do some passenger rides in the meantime. We were slightly slower than last year, mainly due to wear on the slick tyres, but we are looking forward to trying out our set of new Kumho Tyres provided by Velocity Racing at the next meeting. Its now time to get the car ready for the next meeting at Calafat in September... Luke Mustoo

An accident in which a car has been written off is always the worst kind, because it implies the disappearance of the insured car. Fran-cisco Valencia, Línea Directa’s Corporate Governance Director, describes to us the quality measures taken by his company, a leading insurance company for foreigners.

FRANCISCO VALENCIA, LÍNEA DIRECTA’S CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DIRECTOR

“When a car has been written off you have the chance to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you.”

Losing your vehicle in a foreign country is undoubtedly a major setback for anybody. What makes Línea Directa different from other companies?First of all, the personalised service. Línea Directa offers customer service over the telephone entirely in English and German, and also acts as an intermediary and translator with garages and scrap merchants. In addition to this, we also offer different cover options which no other insurer offers, such as our amount of compensation, which is never below €1000, or when appropriate, double the price paid by customers for their insurance. You also have a purchasing centre if customers wish to acquire a new vehicle after theirs has been written off. At Línea Directa we believe that when a car has been written off, it is an opportunity to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you. As a result, if customers ask us to, we take care of all the processes involved in buying a new vehicle in their name, including the paperwork and delivery of the vehicle to their home address. And finally, how does Línea Directa pay compensation?Línea Directa is committed to paying compensation within 40 days at the very most, although the average wait-ing time is always much less. If the car is less than 2 years old, either we pay its value when new in compensa-tion or we take care of all the processes involved in purchasing another vehicle. In addition, if the car is between 2 and 3 years old, we offer 15% more than its official value, as a quality measure.

The giant sculpture took a team led by sculptor Tommy Gun three months to create using 18 scrap cars and was in place for the evening of the Summer Solstice (June 21st) on the Southbank of the Thames in London. It was erected by Skoda to promote its new Citigo car. Each of the six, three-car henges is five metres wide and more than five metres high, and the whole thing weighs 36 tonnes. The structure is now touring the UK and will appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex from June 28 to July 1.

The Aston Martin Vanquish is Reborn.Aston Martin has chosen the name Vanquish to replace its DBS model. The name has been used once before, on the last-ever model built at Newport Pagnell. The new Vanquish will be available as a 2 seater and a 2+2 and has all carbon fibre bodywork, which is a first for the Gaydon company. By contrast, the One-77 featured hand-made aluminium panels on a compos-ite chassis. A prototype debuted at Villa d’Este in May and the production version will be revealed this month. The engine is the classic 6.0 litre V12 producing 565bhp at 6,750rpm, giving a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 295km/h. Deliveries will start later this year in both the UK and Europe, with prices expected to be from £189,995.

With Clare Lawrence

Jonny Smith, motoring journalist and TV presenter, was born in a Somerset village in Feb 1979. He currently lives in South Lincolnshire. In 1997 Jonny started writing for his - at that time - favourite custom/classic VW magazine. He has travelled exten-sively for his automotive journalism and all this came from the absolute determina-tion to chase a career dream.

JONNY SMITH

Hi Jonny! Great to be interviewing you… Thank you for taking time out for the Costa Car Trader Auto Magazine…What were you studying at Uni that you left to follow your career in journalism and was this one of the best decisions that you have ever made?

Leaving my multi-media computing uni degree just 9 months in was a big decision, but there was a chance to get my foot in the door of magazine media - and that was key. Multimedia computing was boring, but this was around the time that the internet was becoming a dominating force. I have to say there hasn't been one day when I wished I'd continued uni, although perhaps I was lucky to get that opportunity at the bottom of the journalism ladder. Who knows?

You became the editor of the VW magazine after three years; was this natural progres-sion from when you first started writing for them?

The publishing group I worked for was a small place, so I put the hours in and tried to prove my worth. My job has always been my hobby, and so that makes it easier to live with when your job is NEVER a 9-5. In fact, this job will never be a 9-5. It can be pretty tough on relationships.

Do you have a particular day that you have had the most fun on that involved your occupation?

There are so many moments when I pinch myself and realise that I'm being paid to do stuff that, in some cases, money couldn't even buy. On my birthday just gone, we were filming the new Audi A1 Quattro on a frozen lake in north Sweden. We were flown in by private jet and given the afternoon in the 1982 world rally winning Audi, with champion Stig Blomqvist behind the wheel. It was epic. A few years back I met champion boxer Ricky Hatton and went training with him. We drove to the gym in his original Only Fools and Horses Reliant van. It was hilarious, memo-rable stuff. Getting access to places like North Sea oil rigs or explosive factories is pretty special. I've been in the air and underground all over the shop! In the last 13 years or so ---

- I've worked with some amazing, inspira-tional people and had the privilege of driving hundreds of cars - many of which I could never afford. When the alarm goes off at 3am I'm never fazed - every day is so different in this line of work.

When you are not writing for your journalism or filming for the TV; what do you get up to?

In the last 3 years I've become a father so the two little kiddies take up a lot of time. Beyond them I try and tinker with older cars as my therapy. I've got a few retro projects on the go. My other passion is keeping tropical aquarium fish. I've done this since I was 8 years old and have always had a tank of some sort. A properly sorted mini ecosystem in your lounge is more fun than anything on TV...

Have you ever looked back on your career and thought: “Wow! I created this…”?

Not really - I suppose I try to keep looking forward, because a career in this industry easily disappears. Someone once (wisely) told me: "You're only as good as your last feature". It's probably true. Life moves at such a pace these days, and being self employed keeps you on your toes. Although I've done quite a bit over the last few years, there is still so much I'd like to explore - especially on TV.

Is there a car that is a particular favourite of yours?

One of the toughest questions I'm always asked. There will always be a special place in my life for the original air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. The design is so simple yet wonderful. Quirky meets function. I still have my first car that I saved up for when 16: it's a 1967 Beetle 1500. There's always a car I fancy buying. One week it's an mk1 Ford Granada, the next it's a Rolls Royce Camargue. Alcohol and eBay can be dangerous. To be honest I tend not to lust after cars I could never afford, although one day I will get a Porsche 911 GT3 as a daily driver. My garage currently consists of an Austin Allegro V6, a '64 Chevy Impala SS, a 1968 Dodge Charger, a Nissan Cube, Range Rover Evoque and 1983 Audi Coupe GT. I've also just embarked on a new project that is electric. It's an old British EV that we're hot rodding to make Europe's fastest street legal electric car. Go to www.flux-capacitor.co.uk to find out more.

Finally, but not least importantly, what’s it like working on Fifth Gear?

Fifth Gear came along out of the blue. I never anticipated having a TV career but it's been nothing short of amazing. That started in 2006 and I'm now working on my 11th series. It still feels strange to work alongside people like Vicky Butler-Henderson and Tiff Needell, who I watched on old Top Gear as a lad. TV can be very intense, and certainly not as glamourous as people think - but it's very rewarding. On Fifth Gear we drive all types of vehicles all over the place. As I said, there is never a dull day. One minute I can be doing a £1500 car buying guide and the next driving a £5,000,000 prototype sports car!

Well thanks Jonny! I hope that we can do this again in the future…

Thanks for the chat. It's been fun! You can follow me on twitter at twitter.com/carpervert

DU MANS

242012

Le Mans city is best known for its connection with mo-torsports. There are two separate racing tracks though they share certain parts. The smaller is the Bugatti Circuit named after Ettore Bugatti, founder of the Bugatti car company.

The biggest racing event in the French calendar was held last month, the 80th Le Mans 24hr endurance race. Audi reaffirmed its dominance once again making it their 11th win in 14 years. The win-ning car was nicknamed Electra. It launched hybrid drive, with a spe-cies of part time electric all wheel drive both perfect for Le Mans' demands and both on Audi's road-car horizon. This was the first serious year for hybrid technology where both Audi and returning Toyota em-braced it. In a battle of Audi's diesel/electric contender and Toyota's petrol/electric, both showed us the extreme possibilities of their future road car technology. Audi had far more development time than Toyota, since they stepped in after the withdrawal of Audi's long time rival Peugeot. Had it not been for economic and political pressures they would have been in the mix with their own diesel hybrid.

Five hours into the 24 Hour Race, Anthony Davidson's Toyota made contact with the Ferrari driven by Italy's Piergiuseppe Perazzini, causing the Toyota to somer-sault into the air and eventually nose first into a barri-cade along with Ferrari. Toyota’s British driver was taken to hospital and sustained only two fractured vertebrae. He tweeted that he was OK from his hospital bed.

The winning team: Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer.

allowed him to pass Sebastian on lap 62 and then Fernando on lap 64 to claim his first win in Canada for five years. Sebastian, feeling his tyres were finished, stopped for a fresh set after Lewis had passed him, but Fernando and Ferrari decided to hang on. It was, however, the wrong call. He was passed by Romain Grosjean's Lotus and Sauber's Sergio Perez, who were both on the same one stop strategy as the Ferrari but did not run into the same tyre problems. A great race for Romain to take second and Sergio third, having started from 15th on the grid. Sebastian took fourth place with Fernando fifth.

10 June, Oulton ParkMatt Neal won the opening race after Jason Plato, who quali-fied on pole, failed to start. Component failure on the way to the grid caused Plato to be pushed off the grid. Neal came under pressure from Andrew Jordan in the closing stages, but kept a cool head to take the win with Jordan taking second. In the second race, Rob Collard and Mat Jackson were leading, but they collided and forced to pit with punctures. Gordon Shedden took the lead and went on to take the win. Jordan took second, with Plato taking 3rd after a terrific drive from 22nd on the grid. Matt Neal won the third race of the day to give him a double and factory Honda a win in all three races. Jason Plato took second with Tom Onslow-Cole third.24 June, CroftIn race one, Matt Neal started on pole, but dropped down to third. He then fought back to take the win ahead of Robert Collard and Gordon Shedden. In the second race, Shedden took the win with Neal second for a Honda 1-2. Rob Austin took his first podium in third. Jason Plato had missed the first race due to mechanical problems, but took some consolida-tion by winning race 3. Tom Onslow-Cole was runner-up and Andrew Jordon third. Matt Neal leads the championship.

July Dates:There are no races in July, the teams are on their mid-

season break. Next race: 12 August, Snetterton.

10th June Montréal, CanadaLewis Hamilton became the seventh different winner in seven races in a race that came alive in the final laps. Sebastian Vettel was on pole and stayed in the lead, with Lewis in second and Fernando Alonso in third.

Hamilton wins

24th June Valencia, EuropeFernando Alonso became the first double race winner of 2012 when he achieved one of the most stunning victories of his F1 career. From 11th on the grid, a combination of brilliant driving and good fortune enabled him to clinch his 19th win, in front of his adoring Spanish fans. It was a thrilling race with with car failures, clashes, crashes and plenty of overtaking.

For the first half of the race, it looked unlikely that anyone would threaten Sebastian Vettel, who stormed into a commanding 20sec lead after start-ing from pole position. This gap disappeared after a safety car period, then his car stopped due to a mechanical problem and he was forced to retire. Fernando was left leading with Romain Grosjean closing, only for him too to retire with a suspected alternator failure. Kimi Räikkönen overtook Lewis to take second and on the penultimate lap, Pastor Maldonado made a pass on Lewis, but ended up T-boning him and sending him crashing into the wall and out of the race. The front wing of Pastor's car was damaged and he dropped down the order, elevating Michael Schumacher to a surprise podium, his first since his return to F1. After the race Pastor Maldonado was given a 20sec penalty, dropping him out of the points. The steering

WOMENFormula 1 is dominated by men and has been so in the 62 years the World Championship has existed. F1 is a very hard sport for drivers to get into and it takes them years if they are lucky enough to succeed. Nowadays there are only around 24 seats on the grid each season and not many of these become available each year. Up until now only five women have entered a grand prix compared to 822 men in the same period.BUT could things be about to change?

Williams have just signed up German touring car driver Susie Wolff as the team's development driver whilst Spaniard Maria de Villota has joined Team Marussia as a test driver for 2012.Although neither of these will probably make it on the grid, it is believed it could be the start of the new genera-tion of Female F1 drivers.

June Ace Café e are approaching our 3rd aniversary of this now popular event and it’s amazing that we have never had to cancel due to bad weather. So when we woke up this morning to overcast skies, rumbles of thunder, spots of rain and the chance to watch the Queen`s Jubilee on TV in the comfort of our own homes then it was tempting to stay at home. But not us! There was still chance to watch the Royal Regatta on the River Thames later in the day and nothing stops the Ace Café meetings. So with numbers slightly down at 52 cars and a few late arrivals it was still a well attended event and yet again, a few new cars arrived to surprise us. How many of you can identify the Citroen A 0853 Z with a Ford Anglia 105E lookalike rear? Phoenix Car Club

The Phoenix Ace Café meet takes place on the first Sunday of each month 11:00 to 13:00 at Hotel La Torre, Los Montesinos and is open to members and all

Cannonball comes to SpainCannonball 2000 takes place from 5th September 2012, when fifty supercars driven by a myriad of celebrities and prestige car owners will embark on a 2,000 mile journey over five days taking them from London to Paris, via Barcelona, Monte Carlo and Milan, raising funds for children’s charity Dreams Come True. With entries ranging from the rare to the exotic, such as a DeLorean DMC-12 to a Lamborghini Gallardo LP570 Performante, the Cannonball 2000 is guaranteed to turn heads on its route across Europe.

Local car clubs, such as the Sunday Drivers Club are already looking at running their own convoy to the event to be in Barcelona on September 6, for arrival of the fifty entries on Day Two of the event, who will be driving down the west coast of France, over the Pyrenees, into Spain, arriving in Barcelona from 5.00pm. For more information come along to the next SDC event on the 29th July. Keith Nicol

Freewheelers June outing was a double header. As is usual the group met in La Marina Playa before heading off towards Elche and the first port of call:

The Salvador Artesano Shoe FactoryThis lays claim to be the largest shoe factory & shop in Europe. We were greeted by an English speaking guide and were given an introduction to the procedures and processes of Spanish shoemaking whilst we sipped our complementary Muscatel. Surprisingly, a large part of the shoe making here is done by hand. Interest satisfied and with many clutching their purchases it was off to the hills with a short stop at the 'bikers bar en route before arriving at:

The Castillo de la Mola & Maria Magdalena SantuaroSituated just outside Novelda with a short walk up the hill to see the magnificent building and the panoramic views of the valley. A Modernist Building, its construction, initiated in 1918 and built of marble, has a single facade, framed by two bell towers which give it a similar appearance to the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona. Inside paintings depict the life of the Saint and we were very impressed. Freewheelers

2012In race one at Knockhill, Shane 'Shakey' Byrne took the win after overtaking race leader Michael Laverty on lap 4. Tommy Hill also overtook Laverty to take the second spot with Laverty having to settle for third. In race two, Laverty was victorious after a battle with Tommy Hill in the middle stages, Byrne claimed the second position on the 13th lap, demoting Hill into third place.

In race one at Miller Motorsports, USA, Carlos Checa took the win 2.3 seconds ahead of Marco Melandri, with Max Biaggi in third. The second race was halted, shortened to 18 laps, and then re-started almost an hour-and-a-half late. This time Marco Melandri was victorious after a tense battle on the last lap with Jonathan Rea, crossing the line only 0.195 seconds ahead. Max Biaggi was third again. Max Biaggi rode from the third row to the race win at his home circuit of San Marino, Misano. It was a thrilling race and Biaggi fended off the late challenge of Carlos Checa who finished second, having started in 16th place. Max Biaggi took the double with a win in the second race, this time with a margin of over 5 seconds. Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam had a long fight for second with Rea securing it.

3rd June Catalunya, SpainDani Pedrosa was the man with the start again, as he took the holeshot from the second row. The whole grid was tightly bunched in the first lap. Ben Spies, in second, made a move on Pedrosa, but ran wide and dropped his bike in the dirt. With six laps remaining, Jorge Lorenzo was right behind Pedrosa, as the pair were involved in a nail-biting tussle for the lead. It was the Repsol rider who made a mistake with a big wheelie, which allowed Lorenzo past in the follow-ing corner. He went onto take the chequered flag, with Andrea Dovizioso holding off Stoner to take his first podium this year.

17th June Silverstone, Great BritainBen Spies was the early leader, but was soon overtaken by Casey Stoner. Jorge Lorenzo fought his way up the pack from fifth, along with Dani Pedrosa who was also moving up the pack. Spies was soon relegated as both Lorenzo and Pedrosa pushed past him. With 11 laps left Lorenzo was closing in on the rear wheel of Stoner, starting a thrilling battle for top spot. They made some thrilling moves with Lorenzo keeping hold of first place and opening up a gap to take the victory. Stoner finished in second with Pedrosa third.

30th June Assen, Netherlands We will report on this race next month.
