Sending Forth

Today we reach the end of the church year and celebrate the triumphant feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. In the Gospel, we find our King on an unlikely throne, the cross. Jesus dies surrounded by naysayers, who mock his kingship because they do not understand it. He is certainly capable of saving himself, he walked unharmed out of Nazareth when his former neighbors wanted to throw him off a cliff, he has healed the sick and fed the multitudes. But he did not come to save himself, he came to save all of us, and so he remains on the cross. One of the criminals condemned to die with Jesus joins in the mockery, but the other recognizes that Jesus is indeed King, and asks “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” This is what we all hope for, that we will be remembered, and on the day our earthly life ends we will be with Jesus in Paradise, in God’s Kingdom, a place where all suffering is reversed, the last are first, and the lowly are raised up. By our baptism, we are anointed as Priest, Prophet and King. Following the example of Jesus’ kingship, we must find our throne on the cross, pouring out our lives in service to others. Today, we celebrate our King, who rules not only our world, but the entire universe, whose compassion and selflessness turned the cross, a place of humiliation and defeat, to a place of triumph for the Kingdom of God, whose crucifixion transformed an act of violence into an act of overwhelming love. As St. Paul says, today and every day we give thanks that we are made “fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones of the light.”

First Reading — The Lord said to David, “You shall shepherd my people Israel” (2 Samuel 5:1-3).

Psalm — Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122).

Second Reading — Thanks to the Father who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light (Colossians 1:12-20).

Gospel — Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom (Luke 23:35-43).

LITURGY VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves;

it is His work; He is the subject; and we must open ourselves to Him” (Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).

THE ORDER OF MASS: THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST – PART 10

The Preparation of the Gifts: The Wine After preparing the paten or ciborium with the bread, the acolyte or server presents the cruets of water and wine. The celebrant stands at the side of the altar and pours wine and a little water into the chalice”, saying quietly:

“By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity”

(Order of Mass, n. 24).

This act of commingling a few drops of water with the wine in the chalice is “a rite rich in symbolism. For the Eastern Church, it symbolizes the Mystery of Christ, the water Christ’s humanity, the wine His Divinity. In the Western Church, it symbolizes the union of Christ (the wine) with His Church (the water)” (Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), p. 519).

(Nota bene: In Masses with a deacon, it is he who performs this rite before handing the chalice to the celebrant.)

The celebrant returns to the middle of the altar, takes the chalice, and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

“Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink”

(Order of Mass, n. 25).

If there is no singing, the celebrant may speak these words aloud. When he does, the people may acclaim: “Blessed be God for ever” (Order of Mass, n. 25). The celebrant then places the chalice on the corporal and covers it with a pall.

“The wine for the Eucharistic celebration must be from the fruit of the grapevine (cf. Lk 22:18), natural, and unadulterated, that is, without admixture of extraneous substances” (GIRM 322).

The twofold formula “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation…” “is noteworthy in its origin, reflecting the fact that our Eucharistic sacrifice was grafted to the Jewish liturgy of repasts, as the one celebrated by Christ with His disciples on Holy Thursday. The prayer is actually a blessing or benediction called berakah. Different from the blessing we think of when we ask the Lord to sanctify an object or an action of ours, this blessing ascends, thanking the Lord, congratulating Him for His greatness and His gifts” (Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), p. 519).

A MESSAGE FROM JUNIPERO SERRA SCHOOL PRINCIPAL: STEVE HENDERSON

Performing Arts at Junipero Serra School The Performing Arts Department of JSS is producing a Christmas season play in early December. You are invited!

Under the direction of Performing Arts teacher Mrs. Stacy Meheen, students are presenting Finding Christmas, a play based on the perennial classic, Charlie Brown’s Christmas. Finding Christmas explores the themes of the extreme commercialization and hyper secularization of modern Christmas and, reflecting the Catholic identity of Junipero Serra School, encourages people to put the message of Christ back into Christmas.

Please support the students of Junipero Serra School and join us for a wonderful production with a positive message. The JSS production of Finding Christmas is a great way to start the Christmas season, reminding us all what Christmas is really about. Finding Christmas will play in Murphy Center at the following dates and times: Saturday December 7 at 7:00 PM Sunday December 8 at 2:00 PM

Tickets will go on sale beginning Sunday November 24th in the Carmel Mission Bookstore for a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are also available at the school office and will be on sale prior to performances at the door of Murphy Center. All proceeds from donations for tickets sales will support the Performing Arts Department of Carmel Mission’s Junipero Serra School!

Serra Challenge Update: Due to the incredible generosity and Christian spirit of the Carmel Mission Parish, two Serra Challenge teams have raised over $1,4000 that is being used in direct social service action to help people in our community. As you know, the Serra Challenge is a student-led project based service learning class designed to bring to life the Gospel message of service to the community. In this middle school class, students:

Identify community challenges Propose solutions Create a business plan Launch projects and become an entrepreneur of their own student-led service projects in their local community.

The Serra Challenge Team Blankets of Hope raised nearly $700 through bake sales and donations. The team bought material from a fabric shop and have successfully made 25 warm blankets for homeless people. They are now working to find the right organization to partner with in order to most effectively distribute the blankets to those most in need.

The Serra Challenge Team Paws for A Cause raised over $600 through one bake sale at Carmel Mission (wow!) and are now looking for the right dog food distributor to partner with in order to buy dog food that they will distribute to the dogs of homeless people.

The Serra Challenge Team Students for iHelp has now raised over $160 to buy food and make lunches in support of the Ministry iHelp. This ministry is part of an interfaith partnership of many churches, including Carmel Mission, that provides sanctuary for the night for folks without a place to sleep.

On behalf of these Serra Challenge teams, and the people they are serving through their service work, THANK YOU for your support!

NEW SECOND COLLECTION ENVELOPES Dear Friends in Christ,

I’m writing to advise you of a change in the way we conduct our weekend collections. Most weekends, we have our first collection, which helps us pay our bills at Carmel Mission.

A second collection usually takes place after Communion, and is for a designated cause. This money is channeled through the diocese.

Starting on December 1st, the first weekend in Advent, our ushers will pass the basket through the pews (and your generous hands) just one time, prior to the Presentation of the bread and wine.

On weekends where there is a designated second collection, there will be special envelopes in the pews marked “Second Collection”. We ask that you place your contribution towards the designated second collection In this envelope. If you receive envelopes from us through Our Sunday Visitor, please place that envelope directly in the basket.

I will certainly miss announcing those second collections after Communion, but I hope and pray that you won’t miss your opportunity to support those worthy causes, when the basket is passed around one time only.

I thank you for your most generous support of our wonderful Mission parish. We could not do all that we do, without your financial support.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,

I’m taking this opportunity to wish you a truly Happy Thanksgiving. Fr. Rodrigo joins with me in extending our great gratitude to you for your prayerful support and encouragement to us, your priests.

We are indeed truly blessed to minister in a parish where the Gospel message of Jesus Christ is not alone greeted with joy, but is also taken to heart and put into action by so many parishioners.

This weekend we will hear an appeal from members of our Falge Farmworker Project. They will be asking for your assistance so that the children of our farmworkers in the Salinas Valley may have a special gift for Christmas from the Friends of Carmel Mission.

Blankets and imperishable food items will also be gratefully received by our Falge Team, and will be distributed among the farmworker families. This outreach is one of the ways that we offer thanks to those whose daily toil in our fields, produces such a bountiful harvest.

We give thanks to our loving God for your great generosity, which never fails to surprise us, and which enables our many ministries to reach out with a helping hand and a welcoming smile to those in need.

Our warmest wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving and our blessings of good health and great happiness to you and your loved ones.

Frs. Paul and Rodrigo,

The priests at the Mission
