THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Lis-ten to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no lan-guage on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

It is through your support that Carmel Mission continues its mission of spreading the Word of our Lord. May God bless you all! —Fr. Paul, Pastor

Today is the Solemnity of Pentecost. One of the most ancient feasts of the Church, Pentecost is mentioned and explained in both the Acts of the Apostles (today’s First Reading) and in St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. The name comes quite simply from the Greek word, Pentekoste, which meant “the 50th day” as Pentecost is 50 days after Easter Sunday (counting Easter).

Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church” as it was on this day — with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and about 120 followers of Christ, including our Blessed Mother Mary and other men and women — that Christ’s mission on earth is completed.

However, that mission continues with us. We, too, have received the power of the Holy Spirit through Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, and other sacraments. It is this Holy Spirit that allows us to be the Lord’s Disciples actively working in today’s Church and to-day’s society. Nevertheless, we must accept and recognize that fact.

In a homily given on Pentecost Sunday 20 years ago Pope St. John Paul II said, “In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke describes the extraordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit. This divine gift is light and power, light to proclaim the Gospel truth and power to infuse each of us with the courage of witnessing to the faith.” Living out this call is the essence of stew-ardship.

Always Forward, Never Back

The Carmel Mission Basilica is sustained and our community is connected over the ages by a generational legacy of renewal. This exhibit honors all of the dedicated individuals, past and present who have conserved and restored one of California’s most enduring religious, cultural and historic landmarks.

Carmel Mission Quadrangle Courtyard Restoration – Viewing Platform & Exhibit The Courtyard restoration is well under way and the construction team is making great progress. We are very pleased to announce the opening this weekend of a viewing station in the loggia outside of the Mora Chapel adjacent to the Museum where our parishioners and guests may watch the historic renovation project in progress. This is a unique opportunity you will not want to miss. We plan to exhibit several panels of photographs featuring past historic renovations, activities around the courtyard and historic visi-tations to our beautiful Mission grounds. “The Carmel Mission Basilica - a Legacy of Renewal” is a pictorial exhibit created by our Museum Manager Jewel Gentry.

This living history exhibit offers a unique view of the current restoration and places us in a point in time and provides an enduring sense of place at the center of our beloved Mission property.

Moms, Muffins, and Poetry Thursday before Mothers Day the 1st grade hosted their mothers for some morning treats and conversa-tion about poetry. This final “publication” party was centered around a closing unit in Language Arts about poetry. April marked the 20th annual celebration of National Poetry Month, a perfect time for these young writers to be introduced to this wonderful form of writing. Sharing one of their favorite poems from a “master” as well as some of their own creations seemed a perfect way to celebrate their Mothers who do so much! Thanks to our first grade teacher Stephanie Pritchard for capturing some pictures from the event to share with our parish family! Find a poem you love today and fall in love with it all over again. Mary Ellen Ryan
