The readings today focus on the importance of God’s laws in the relationship between God and God’s people. In the first reading, we hear the Ten Commandments delivered to Moses on Mount Sinai. These commandments outline two key guidelines in the relationship between God and God’s people, the importance of the supremacy and acknowledgement of the one true God and the importance of an observed respect for God through reverence shown to God’s name. The commandments also detail how God’s people should behave in regards to one another, some fairly obvious such as the prohibition against killing, but some much more subtle; it is not enough to simply refrain from stealing from your neighbor but you also must not covet your neighbor’s relationships, possessions and success. Envy can be a strong poison in a community or a relationship, harming the envied and enviers alike. In the Gospel we see an uncharacteristically angry Jesus, driving the merchants and moneylenders from the Temple, protecting the dignity and sacredness of God’s house. While Jesus’ actions may seem harsh, and the wording of the Ten Commandments is also very strong, both actions come from the deep love God has for us, God’s people. In the Psalm we hear that “the law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.” God’s laws are designed to protect us and help us to achieve a deeper connection with God, and a more peaceful and sustainable social fabric in our world. Close attention and adherence to God’s laws is not a punishment but an act of love, which serves to bring us greater peace and harmony in our earthly lives, and a closer relationship to our loving God. A Taizé prayer service offers an opportunity to s ll the busy-ness in our lives, our minds and our hearts and turn our thoughts over to God. A core element to Taizé is the repe on of simple musical chants, the dura on of each chant is not pre-determined and the act of repe on, common to many forms of medita on and worship, allows our minds to quiet and our focus to deepen. The other principal element of Taizé worship is a generous use of silence. True periods of silence can create a unique moment for a mee ng with God. In addi on, Taizé liturgies incorporate readings from the sacred scriptures and communal intercessions. At our Taizé services during

the Lenten season we incorporate a prayer around the cross, an opportunity for all present to bring themselves and their concerns, physically or in their

hearts, to the foot of the cross to share them with our loving God, and leave refreshed and comforted for the week ahead. The roots of the Taizé prayer come from the south of Burgundy, France. Over seventy years ago in a village called Taizé, Brother Roger Schutz founded a monas c community devoted to prayer and reconcilia on. The community there is comprised of brothers from all over the world and all major Chris an denomina ons who gather three mes a day, seven days a week to pray. in busy mes, many people go on pilgrimage to Taizé to experience this unique form of prayer and there can be upwards of 7000 people at a service! Many more people experience Taizé in their faith communi es at home, as this style of worship has grown in popularity around the world. At the Carmel Mission we offer Taizé Prayer Around the Cross on Wednesdays during Lent beginning Wednesday, February 21 at 7pm in the Basilica. Please come and spend an hour in prayer and medita on with your community, further exploring your own Lenten journey and availing yourself of a chance to rest and focus on your rela onship with God. We look forward to praying with you!

Jane Stanford Did you know that the Carmel Mission has a connection to Stanford University? Well, it is a little indirect but thanks to the two people who established Stanford University in memory of Leland Stanford, Jr. their son, Jr. we received substantial

support for the restoration of the Mission. Leland and Jane Lathrop Stanford founded Stanford University in 1887. Stanford had been the 8th Governor of California and a US Senator (1885-1893) in addition to his significant business success. He was a director and major stockholder of the fabled Del Monte Hotel in Monterey. During this period, Jane Stanford was

active in promoting and supporting the restoration and history of the Carmel Mission. The Mission was in a state of abject despair and ruin. The supporting timbers had collapsed but the 5 foot thick stone walls survived and remained intact. The Mission was an administrative “dependency” of San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey, and its pastor, Fr. Angelo Casanova, was dedicated to restoring the Mission. Mrs. Stanford had formed a friendship with Fr. Casanova. Between 1880 and 1884 sufficient funds were raised to put new roof on the church. On August 24, 1884 a dedication ceremony was held which marked a major step in the renaissance of the Mission. Symbolically, but also sadly, this celebration took place 100 years after the death of Junipero Serra and 5 months after the death of her son. Jane Stanford maintained her connections with Fr. Casanova, her interest in the history of the Mission and its important place in California history. She commissioned the design and construction of a statue of Fr. Serra which is now located within the grounds of the Presidio.

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Next Selection, Carmel Mission Book Club The next selection for the Carmel

Mission Book Club is Strangers in a Strange Land by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Because of the current flu epidemic, we will temporarily cease to offer our neighbor a greeting at the beginning of mass and at the Sign of Peace. We will also temporarily cease to offer the chalice at Communion time. As you are probably aware, the State of California has been badly affected by the flu virus, and the above mentioned measures have been taken to safeguard the health of our parishioners and visitors. Please continue to pray for all our sick brothers and sisters. I wish you blessings of good health and great happiness, Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

STEWARDSHIP

Annual Ministry Appeal 2018

WE ARE ASKING EACH AND EVERY PARISHIONER TO CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING!

Last week, on Pledge Sunday, we kicked off our 2018 Annual Ministry Appeal (AMA), the one and only fund raiser we do each year for our parish itself! I am pleased to report that we have gotten off to a fast start and are already seeing record contributions for the first week. Please keep up the excellent work. If everyone contributes something, we will not only achieve but exceed our $100,000 goal! As a reminder, 100% of each dollar raised will go directly to benefit our ministries. The first $50,000 will go toward Bishop Garcia’s diocesan-wide ministries described in the brochure in your pews. Every dollar above $50,000 will support our own parish ministries by paying for necessary repairs for Crespi Parish Hall, which is used by all our ministries as well as for other parish events. We will use this additional $50,000 to continue the work we began last year. The remaining work will make our kitchen safer and even more functional for our many activities there. In addition, we will be converting some old storage space in Crespi into much needed offices for use by our ministries. This is Carmel Mission’s only annual fund raiser for the parish itself. Together as a community, we can achieve far more than any one of us alone. That is why it is important that every parishioner donate something to this important appeal.

Our two reasonable objectives are: $100,000 and 100% participation!

We received a record 62 contributions for the first weekend of the campaign totaling

$18,652.68! Please consider making your commitment today – either online at www.carmelmission.org or by using one the envelopes in the pews at mass. We hope each and every parishioner takes this opportunity to support our parish.

Thank You for your Stewardship! Your con nued generosity for the week ending 02/25/2018

Plate Collec ons: $13,942.48 Special Dona on $10,000.00 Outreach Ministries - $200.00 (In Memory of Carl Bozzo R.I.P.)) Organ Maintenance Fund $2,760.00 Total Weekly Contribu ons: $26,902.48

I thank you for your sense of Stewardship and your great generosity. Blessings of Joy, Hope and Peace—Fr. Paul, Pastor.

Although The Last Supper is easily one of the world’s most iconic paintings, its permanent home is a convent in Milan, Italy. Moving it would be tricky, to say the least! Da Vinci painted the religious work directly (and fittingly) on the dining hall wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie back in 1495.
