CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

INTRODUCTION It is a legal process whereby a person is

put to death. The term capital originates from

‘capitalis’ meaning ‘head’, refering to execution by beheading.

HISTORY OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

HISTORY Capital punishment has, in the past, been practised

by most societies, as a punishment for criminals, and political or religious dissidents. Historically, the carrying of the death sentence was often accompanied by torture, and executions were most often public.

The use of formal execution extends to the beginning of recorded history. Most historical records and various primitive tribal practices indicate that the death penalty was a part of their justice system. Communal punishment for wrongdoing generally included compensation by the wrongdoer, corporal punishment, shunning, banishment and execution. Usually, compensation and shunning were enough as a form of justice.

Severe historical penalties include breaking wheel, boiling to death, flaying, slow slicing, disembowelment, crucifixion, impalement, crushing by elephant, stoning, execution by burning, dismemberment, sawing, decapitation, scaphism, necklacing or blowing from a gun.

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT MUST BE SUPPORTED BECAUSE OF MANY REASONS-• In India :52 criminals executed since

independence.• Tax wasted on prisoners• Overcrowding in jails.• Might kill other prisoners in cell.• Political influence.

.

Murderers who are executed are given an option of how they’d like to be executed (options vary by state), a luxury that wasn’t afforded by their victims

Methods of Execution: Lethal injection (81% since 1976) Electrocution (16%)-9 states Lethal Gas (1.1%)-Only available in Arizona, California, Missouri &

GLOBAL HEROIN FLOW

Few years back, Arushi Talwar murder case captured the headlines of all the news channel creating a suspense of who the suspect was. As the case proceeded, their parents’ were proven guilty. Now, this was the crime where one can kill his own family member and must have been given death punishment because illiterate people may follow the same thing pushing such heinous acts a rise in our society.

Drug trafficking is a global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. At current levels, world heroin consumption (340 tons) and seizures represent an annual flow of 430-450 tons of heroin into the global heroin market. Increasing exposure to cheap drugs like methamphetamine and marijuana leads people to slow death so liable for capital punishment.

Bombings at parliament of India was a shameful act and it generated a stir amongst indians demanding punishment for the terrorist who carried out this bloody incident.

CONCLUSION : Capital punishment is the need of the

hour in our country, because it is only the crime rate which is increasing in our country, nor the employment, nor medical or educational facilities….

Capital punishment should be there in practice as it can keep those terrorist and rapist afraid of the fact that they can be hanged which in turn be the helping hand in reducing the crime rate and to control violence in the society.
