Strategy and planning are important for your business, no matter what its size or how long it’s been going

At LIFE Church we recently had Vision Sunday – a key time each year when Pastor Paul encourages us to consider:

‐ why we're here,

‐ where we’ve come from, and

‐ where we want to go.

Pastor Paul reminded us – our past has helped shaped who we are and what we’ve become, but it doesn’t dictate our future.

Our today is what matters most – it draws out a pathway for the future ‐ that’s what business and strategic planning is all about.

Planning  reconnects us back to what we’re here to do and how we want to have impact.

It helps us identify what needs to change today (if anything) to ensure we get there.

At a recent Business 101 session Steve Clark introduced us to Brian’s Lawn Mowing business, and walked us through the Business Improvement Framework (see his presentation and podcast online)

Today we’re drilling in a little deeper into the Strategy component

TIP – The key to this, and any other presentation, is what one or two nuggets really speak to you and that you’re going to do something about, today?

Harvard Business Review finding ‐ even in high‐performing companies with “clearly articulated public strategies”, only 29% of their employees could correctly identify their company’s strategy out of six choices (7 out of 10 of your staff could be misaligned with where you want your business to go!)

If you or your staff are unclear where the goal posts are, you’ll either:

‐make very tentative steps forward or

‐ work with the wrong assumptions and be off and running at a great rate, but in completely the wrong direction!

Alignment isn't just about getting the team (large or small) on the same page with your current priorities … its about ensuring your activities are aligned to your longer term goals.

If you’re not clear about where your business is going then most day to day activities could look great ‐ but they may not get you and your business to where you really want to go.

‐What actions should you and your staff take everyday to reach your goals?

‐ Are you filtering your decisions based on the big arrow?

‐ Can you say no to tempting opportunities if they don't align with your big arrow?

Planning is about reconnecting with why your business exists, looking at what you’ve been doing and are doing, and deciding whether that’s the game you should still be playing.

Corporates usually formally plan at least annually, and monitor progress towards their goals quarterly.

With the number of emails and other activity requests we get daily, we need to regularly check that our actual activities line‐up with our big arrow.

Each year the Board approves a limited set of activities which we believe will move us forward in an aligned direction.  One of the first things we do is remind ourselves of our mission, to set the scene.

As a long‐term investor, we have a medium‐term (five year) and longer‐term “target state” defined, which talk broadly about what we think should characterise our organisation, investment activities, people, and external relationships.

The point of these pages, and in looking back at our mission, is to ensure we have a clear reference point for where we go next.

Risk Landscape – take some time to consider what could stop you achieving the objectives you’re setting in this planning session, and what will do you do about it?

A couple of questions we ask ourselves during the year as we build our plans:

‐What are we doing today that you want to do better?

‐Where do we want to create quite a different tomorrow?

These questions are really saying:

‐ Do we stay the course we’re on? Steady as she goes?

‐What else should or could we be doing?

Note the link to the medium and longer term target states (or goals).

Process – to ensure we understand our environment and the opportunities and risks ahead, a range of people contribute to our plan development: Functional areas (including Investments, Operations, Finance, Tax, Risk), the CEO & Leadership team, our Board, and Internal Committees (e.g. the Risk Committee)

Who do you need to help develop a realistic plan for your business, to reach your longer term goals?

Recent 101 session on Buying and Selling a business – consider these factors when you think about what your plan should include:

‐ How dependent is the business on you – are you the business?  If you walk does your business walk with you?

‐ Staff and Contractors – what is the culture of your business?  Are your staff happy and do they want to stay?  Do you have the right level of skills to get to your next level?

‐What is the reputation of your competition?  What is your reputation and why?  What needs to change and how?

‐ Do you have a broad and diverse range of customers, or are you dependant on one or two?

‐What potential opportunities do you see that you have not been able to exploit yet.  What will you do about that?

VERY IMPORTANT ‐What does your financial and business reporting tell you about your business?  Make time with your accountant and ask them what the numbers are saying about your business and where you might need to make changes?  If all they can tell you is how much tax you need to pay then it’s time to find another accountant!

15

Page 16: Business 101 Presentation - Strategy and Business Planning ......At a recent Business 101 session Steve Clark introduced us to Brian’s Lawn Mowing business, and walked us through

Activities in your plan – consider What, Why, When and Who (some would add “HOW”, although at the time you write your goals you won’t necessarily know the HOW)

At the same time you’re thinking about those goals, make it very clear what success looks like ‐ it really helps clarify what the goal is and whether it’s actually worth pursuing

16

Page 17: Business 101 Presentation - Strategy and Business Planning ......At a recent Business 101 session Steve Clark introduced us to Brian’s Lawn Mowing business, and walked us through

What do you need to implement your plan? (People, Plant, Equipment, Premises, Process, Systems)

There’s a lot of unknowns as we look ahead ‐ what key assumptions are you or your accountant using in your forecasts.

‐ Is income consistent with prior years?

‐ Are expense assumptions realistic?  How have they tracked in previous years?

What will your profit and loss and cash flow look like if you do these new activities + your day‐to‐day business well?

Note: be careful with Excel – it’s very easy to create a great looking “forecast” .... the key is those assumptions
