There is a big disconnect between what people think vs. reality when it comes to owning and operating a business

Pareto Principle - states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes

The Skinny Guy ●Disciplined, organized and no non-sense ●Not very fun●Sometimes judgemental

The Fat Guy●A ton of fun ●Loves food, fun and friends●Not the best at discipline but he has a

good time

We think that we one person but in fact….

We have multiple personalities within ourselves

We all have the following personalities

1.The Technician 2.The Manager 3.The Entrepreneur



The Technician

●The person who loves to work in the trade

●Change is a pain, because I cannot do the work

●Just leave me alone and let me do my job



The Manager

●Everything has its place●Structure, structure, structure●Everyone must follow the rules●Everyone must follow a “system”



The Entrepreneur ●Can see it all - They have the big

picture●Sees his or her business as one

complete system - and wants to work on it

●Understands how their company fits in the marketplace and what needs to be done to compete

with owning and operating a business (because there is so much to know)

●Owning a business is very different than doing the technical work

●To be successful, you must transform to be an entrepreneur, not a technician

Businesses are no different - They have predictable phases that all go through

Business Adolescent (The teenage years)●Business begins to grow ●Balls begin to drop, cannot manage

it all●Just trying to keep up - Fight fires

daily●Service is inconsistent●Hire, then fire, then hire, then fire●Some businesses stay here (and

prematurely kill the owner)●Most owners don’t see the way out



Business Maturity (The responsible adult)●Few businesses make it here ●Owners treat their business as

the product●Highly profitable and predictable●Systems, checklists and procedures ●Can produce results for customers

consistently●The owner has time and rests easy

●They understand that they must spend their time working on the business not in it
