IT'S MY PARK DAY FALL 2012 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2012

Dallas Parks and Recreation is calling on you to contribute a few hours to beautify your neigh-borhood park for It’s My Park Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 8. So please come out to Exall Park and volunteer any time you can that morning.

We have four different projects we want to try and accomplish that day. The Parks Depart-ment is supplying us with three loads of mulch for the washed out area on the Live Oak Street side of the park. We need people to spread all of it. We are going to put a new coat of green paint on the two large electrical boxes in the park and paint the two small electrical boxes. We want to clean out the beds with flowers and add mulch to the rock garden. There is also a washed out area on Bryan Street close to the playground we would like to fill in with some materials.

When completed, we will grill some hot dogs and have some very cold drinks! We hope you can make it!

BUDGET TOWNHALL MEETINGS I will be holding two townhall meetings to discuss the City Manager’s proposed budget for 2012-13 (our fiscal year starts in October). I hope you’ll join me and let your neigh-bors know: Thursday, August 23 6:30 – 8pm Arlington Hall in Lee Park, 3333 Turtle Creek Blvd. Tuesday, August 28, 6:30 – 8pm St. Thomas Aquinas, Drama Room (joint meeting with Councilmember Sheffie Kadane) 6306 Kenwood Ave.

WEST NILE VIRUS SPRAYING There have been two deaths from the West Nile virus so far in Dallas. Here’s a map of the areas the City of Dallas has sprayed this year for West Nile (I’ll keep this map updated): https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=218305337785436901963.0004c51fe556cdb1432fd&msa=0 Preventing mosquito bites is the best way to avoid getting the West Nile Virus, and the elderly are particularly suscep-tible. Remember the Four D’s: ---DRAIN standing water in your yard and neighborhood. Standing water can be found in swimming pools that are not kept clean, ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, pot-ted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys and clogged rain gutters. ---DUSK/DAWN are the times of day you should stay in-doors when mosquitoes are most active. ---DRESS in long-sleeved shirts and wear pants when you are outside. Spray thin clothing with insect repellent. ---DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent.

How Bryan Place Voted Over 100 voters from the Bryan Place area par-ticipated in the July 31 Democrat and Republican Primary Runoff election. Though all our votes may not mirror the actual outcome of the elec-tion, our voices were heard. Thanks to all who voted. The results for Precinct 3009, which in-cludes Bryan Place, are as follows:

YYARDARD OOFF THETHE MMONTHONTH

August, 2012 yard of the month at 3507 Word belongs to ten year resident, Pam Nunez. Landscaped with a curved stone border fea-tures blooming periwinkles and colorful coleus framed with evergreen bushes and flanked with minimal planters elevated by recycled pedestals (see what you can do with estate sale finds), and the St Augustine grass is green and luscious. Take a look at this “hot” landscape in the hottest month of the year. Thank you Pam for the effort put forth in making your landscape beautiful in August for all to enjoy.

Respect your park, yards, neighbors, and the Bryan Place community! ALWAYS REMEMBER:

14th Annual Boot Camp, Saturday, August 25th The 2012 DHL Boot Camp is coming up August 25th at City Hall, from 9am to Noon! DHL is planning another exciting and informative Boot Camp, and we want you to be a part of it! This year, we are excited to announce that the new DISD Superintendent Mike Miles will be our keynote speaker. There will also be seminars on topics such as Form Based Zoning, Public Schools and Your Neighborhood, The Board of Adjustment, How to Form a Neighborhood Association, Grassroots Neighborhood Improvement, and Neighborhood Map-ping Workshop.

In addition to our extraordinary seminars, attendees will have the opportunity to network and share ideas with neighborhood leaders from all over the city in our meet and greet area! As a Bryan Place resident, the cost of your registration will be covered. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be able to attend.

Gigliola Aguilera Talks About Gigi’s We spoke with Gigiliola Aguielara of Joyce and Gigi's Kitchen coming to Hall Street. She revealed the first suite of the building WILL be a coffee shop, but is not related to her business at all. This is the business we reported as having tables and chairs visible through the window. Hers is the next section, which will be the restaurant. The rest of the building that remains open may be converted into office space or another restaurant if the property owner gets a tenant. The gated area at the corner of Hall and Ross will serve as parking spaces as well as the open area Vann Court alley, which was required with the permits she explained. She doesn't know when she will be opening because the plumbing and construction has to be completed then inspected. But we are encouraged as daily construction has resumed on the building.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK AT THE POOL CLUBHOUSE

Bryan Place pool house visitors are reminded to adhere to the parking restrictions at the pool clubhouse

and not park around the area. This restricts space for emergency vehicles. Thank you for your

cooperation.

Andrew's next show at The Prophet Bar, 2548 Elm St, in Deep Ellum at 8:00 PM August 17th

The BP Bit Young Bryan Place resident, Isa Killian, celebrated her third birthday with all of her friends, family, and a few neighbors earlier this month. She was certainly treated like a princess for a day as everyone enjoyed hot dogs, cup cakes, and games with her. Happy birthday, Isa!

If you have fun photos or news to share, please send it to us.

Ross Avenue

Safer Passage To Arts District Although we are still waiting on progress for the public art project for the underpass at Ross Avenue and Central Expressway, the Gateway To Arts District, we are pleased that the city has finally painted crosswalks at the intersections. In addition to the signage expected to keep drivers from turning right on red going into the Arts District, the new stop light for Ross traffic and the cross walks will make strolling over to the Arts District a little bit safer.

Neighbor’s Calls To 911 Protects Bryan Place

Last month a neighbor was persistent about calling 911. The neighbor’s action may have deterred a would be burglar from victimizing Bryan Place. The neighbor first called when the suspect tried stealing a bicycle off the rack on a car on Pavillion and Adolph streets. Because the thief was unsuccessful, the police were unable to make an arrest. The same suspect returned, climbed the fence of the pool clubhouse and camped out overnight. Unfortunately he left before the police arrived. The neighbor praised the quick reaction from Dallas Police though. Hopefully the suspect realized he was being watched and won’t try Bryan Place again. We are grateful to have vigilant neighbors like this and encourage others to ALWAYS dial 911 when a suspicious person or activity occurs in our neighborhood.

NEED A SMOKE DETECTOR? As a Dallas resident, the fire department will install smoke detectors in your home for free. Just call the city’s non-emergency number at 311 to schedule an appoint-ment. With the close proximity of homes in Bryan Place it is important to protect the safety of your house-hold and neighbors around you.

Apartment Incidents Skewing Statistics The crime statistics within the boundaries of Bryan Place still remain relatively low according to Dallas Police. However, the overall statistics of the area is seeing an increase due mostly to activities reported at nearby apartment complexes including the new Icon On Ross. With patios at street level, burglars are taking advantage of the easy access to items those residents are leaving outside. However, burglary is not the only crime being reported. While our neighborhood remains safe, we cannot rest on our laurels. We must remain vigilant and report all activities because it is just as important to have proper police patrols as it is to simply keep our crime statistics low.

Otra Parte Demolished On Ross Avenue

Another sign of Ross Avenue being transformed has occurred in recent weeks when Otra Parte Night Club at the corner of Ross and Carroll was demolished. Though the night club existed before Cesar Chavez Learning Center was built, it has been a source of contention with PD298 residents because of activities occurring directly across from a school. The Bowling & Billiards building and parking lot in the 4000 block of Ross has been cleared to make way for what may be restaurant storage facility a neighbor was told. We will keep you posted as we find out more information.

OCA Update On ‘Happy Shapes’ Project The Dallas Office Of Cultural Affairs held a meeting this month and explained the “Happy Shapes” public art project, which is expected to light up the Ross Avenue underpass, is awaiting TxDOT approval for electric plans. Then it will go on to the Dallas city council. The Dallas Morning News blogged about the meeting. Read their blog online at: delay at http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/2012/08/public-arts-committee-ross-avenue-plans-move-forward-cotton-bowl-on-track.html/.

BEFORE YOU REMODEL THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME We would like to remind everyone who has plans to make exterior changes to their properties to always secure permits, check your deed restrictions, and seek approval from affected neighbors by completing the application for improvements found below and in your neighborhood telephone directory. This not only protects the integrity of our neighborhood, but may avoid potential lawsuits if covenants aren’t followed. Please remember to complete a form and send it to a BPNA board member for board approval at board meetings before starting construction.

Neighbor Remembered Friends, family, and neighbors celebrated the life of longtime Bryan Place resident, Robert Lopez, who passed away in his home at Word and Villars last month. Everyone recalls Rob’s generosity as he often offered vegetables from his garden that he treasured or how his dog Lilah would greet anyone who walked by the intersection. Rob was 60 years old. He will be dearly missed .
