Greetings Supporters of Exall Park,

Before this year gets off to a faster start than last year finished, I just wanted to drop a note to so many of you that have supported Exall Park through the years with your volunteer hours, your financial support, and

your many wonderful words of encouragement.

With your support we had another successful Dallas Symphony Orches-tra concert in Exall Park last year. It has grown through the years to become one of the City's largest performances held in one of our city parks. The Friends of Exall Park Board and the Dallas Parks Board receive so many positive comments from the community and citizens of East Dallas about how

much they enjoy the festivities and concert at Exall.

With the help of all our volunteers we were able to plant 11 more new trees in Exall Park this year. Over the last three years we have added 17 new trees to replace the old and dying trees that had to be removed. Earlier in the spring of last year we were able to get our new entry beds into the

park from McCoy Street & Villars Street.

You may have noticed the reconstruction work on the sidewalks near the rock garden and Whimsy. An attempt is being made to raise the sidewalks in that area to keep water and mud from pooling

on the sidewalk in that area. We hope that the solution works.

None of these projects would have been possible without your dedicated support. On behalf of the Friends of Exall Park Board I want to send out a huge thank you. Your support is greatly appreci-ated and together we will strive to continue to maintain our wonderful park and to add other en-

hancements to make our park even better.

Lastly, I want to let everyone know we are going to have another "Clean Up Day" in the park on March 2nd. Also, I am happy to announce the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will be performing once

again this year at Exall on Tuesday evening, June 4th. Please mark your calendars.

Thank you all so much, Wayne Smith

Ross Avenue

Dallas Police Work With Neighborhood To Make Gateway Safer Volunteers who periodically clean up the underpass at Ross Avenue and Central Expressway, the Gateway To Arts District, have noticed the amount of trash and liquor containers has increased significantly. Unfortunately, there is also evidence of a homeless encampment being established under the bridge. The road construction along Central Expressway between Gaston Avenue and Live Oak Street may be the reason for the migration of homeless encampments at the Ross Avenue underpass.

There was a recent incident where a confrontation occurred with a homeless male which resulted in his arrest. Dallas Police urge anyone who encounters members of the encampment to always call the police, but never approach anyone. We are working closely with the Dallas Police Crisis Intervention team to alleviate this problem before it escalates. They recommend working in teams.

Hinga’s Hearing Delayed Hinga Auto Repair‘s hearing with the City Planning Commission to create a

sub district in PD298 has been delayed. The meeting was to be held on

February 7th, but was postponed until, Thursday, March 7. That date is still

pending as well. Hinga’s is requesting a special use permit to continue

operating as an automotive repair shop on Ross Avenue similar to the one

granted to Woodard’s Automotive, across the street. The Bryan Place

Neighborhood Association board opposes the change. Whether you support

or oppose the change, you are encouraged to attend the committee meeting

at City Hall. We will keep you posted when and if the hearing will occur.

Southern Comforts Reincarnation? According to a sign on the doors of the Ross Avenue Tex-Mex cantina, Southern Comforts, they are going through renovations and planning a grand re-opening in March. The restaurant has only been open a few months, but it hasn’t seemed to show the same fanfare as the popular bar and restaurant next door, Three Sheets. The neighborhood hosted a Dinner On The Town event there last year. Though most were impressed with the facilities, many had mixed feelings about the food and menu. Let’s hope this next go around will show an improvement as neighbors appreciate having restaurants within walking distance.

Respect your park, yards, neighbors, and the

Bryan Place community!

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

PLEASE PICK

UP

AFTER YOUR

Monthly BPNA Board Meeting!

The Bryan Place Neighborhood Association held their monthly board meeting on Monday, February 4th.

Since the City Planning Commission’s hearing for Hinga Auto Repair is delayed, the discussion on the board’s plans were postponed. Neighborhood park-ing problems were also discussed. The treasurer re-ported that the first of two donations to the Friends of Exall Park and Loving My Community were made.

A tentative calendar of events was reviewed and plans for the upcoming general meeting were dis-cussed (see page 6).

The next monthly board meeting will be on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 7PM, held at the pool club house at 3030 Adolph Street. Anyone can attend.

THE BRYAN PLACE BOOK CLUB The Bryan Place Book Club meets

on the second Thursday of each

month. The BRYAN PLACE

BOOK CLUB will be reading the

following in the coming months:

February: For Whom the Bell

Tolls. Ernest Hemingway

March: The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks,

Rebecca Skloor

April: The Swerve: How the World Became Modern,

Stephen Greenblatt

May: The Little Prince, Antoine De Saint-Exupery

July: Great Expectations, Charles Dickens

August: Beyond the Beautiful Forevers, Kathleen Boo

September: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,

Jamie Ford

We have some very good selections and if you are inter-

ested in joining us, please contact Gaye Maris at

[email protected].

No mail service on Monday , February 18, 2013. Enjoy President’s Day!

Light Up Bryan Place!

The holiday lights are down and the new year is here. Please help eliminate shadows and lighten up the neighborhood by turning your porch light on each evening. Bright lights are not necessary. In fact, glare is as much a problem as shadows when it comes to obscuring our homes. Enough well-directed light to eliminate shadows is all that's needed.

Be sure to let your neighbors know if you are traveling so they can help watch your home. Keep flyers and packages off your doorstep to avoid the appearance of an unoccupied house.

Protect your vehicles. Always remember

HIDE LOCK TAKE your valuables!

PLEASE UTILIZE YOUR DRIVEWAYS

As you know, most streets within Bryan Place are narrow. The board continues to receive complaints of over crowded streets that can often present safety hazards. When possible, please park your vehicles in your driveway leaving space for traffic and emergency vehicles.

Good Police Report Last Month There were fewer incidents reported to Dallas Police from within Bryan Place for January. However, several for the area, mostly from nearby apartment complexes. That is good news for homeowners. Please remain vigilant and report any unusual activity or persons to keep our community safe.

Coffee Time And

Consignment

We were told that the long awaited coffee shop to the north of Joyce and Gigi’s at Hall Street and Ross Avenue is still weeks away from opening. Hopefully it will be soon.

You may have noticed the suite on the other side has finally been enclosed with new windows. The space is currently being used as a consignment shop. All of this is a welcomed changed to one of the main entrances into Bryan Place. We will keep you posted when these businesses are scheduled to open.

Neighborhood Clean-Up Our neighbors East of Washington Avenue are planning a Neighborhood Clean-Up on

Saturday, March 23rd. If you live within the area bordered by Haskell on the east,

Washington on the west and Ross and Live Oak on the north and south and are interest-

ed in volunteering or helping organize the event please contact Cesar Reyna at

[email protected] or at 214-810-0204.

Sidewalk and Landscaping Almost Complete The sidewalks that intersect near Whimsy’s rock garden in Exall Park are now complete and landscaping is underway. This is good news as the area often floods and remains a muddy mess for several days. Don’t forget to join your neighbors on Saturday, March 2 for “It’s My Park” day as we clean up the area and enjoy a little fellowship.

Exall Park Recreation center still has low priced workout memberships and classes available for adults and children. Please drop by the center for more information or call 214-670-7812.

Lost Dog in Bryan Place

We lost our White Shih Tzu on Pecos on Friday. She was not wearing her collar. Maybe somebody is taking

care of her till they find her family (us).

Thanks for your help.

1500 Pecos -Georgetown Court Homeowners Association - February Yard of the Month Driving down Pecos, one should take a look at the handsome entry into the Georgetown Court Townhomes. The drive is lined with brick and stone pavers, leading to the entry gates. There are live oaks gracing the entry and lush land-scaping on either side planted with roses, crepe myrtles and various shrubs. The beds are filled with blooming, colorful pansies. During the evening hours, accent lighting illuminates the trees and drive. When out for an evening stroll, take a look at one of the most striking gated en-trance ways in all of East Dallas.

NEW LANDSCAPERS FOR BRYAN PLACE We have hired a father and son landscaping team who have been working in Bryan Place for several years, Jesus and Albert Cavazos. They will be maintaining the median on Skiles. In the meantime, they have cleaned up two intersections, one at San Jacinto and Liberty and the other at Pavillion and Bryan Street. At the Liberty intersection, they pruned the trees and bushes, as well as hauled out bags of leaves and trash. The Pavillion intersection has been cleaned of leaves and debris and they will be trimming the tall hedge

adjacent to the vacant lot in the coming weeks. When you see them working in the neighborhood, please welcome them.

Keeping An Eye On Street Repairs As construction at the intersection of Marseilles Place and Basil Court nears completion, the

board and neighbors are keeping a close eye on the finished product. City code requires that

decorative pavement, like that on many on streets in Bryan Place, be restored to the original

design. The stamped brick pavement in Bryan Place has given our community more character.

If the road work is not similar to the original when this is complete, we will contact city hall.

This problem occurred on Liberty Court in 2011 and took a while to be resolved.
