Every summer about this time I begin to think that there has never been a longer or hotter summer. Spending time outdoors can be a challenge if you don’t plan on being outdoors in the early morning hours. Even later in the evening can be difficult, especially when there is no wind and the humidity seems suffocating. Staying healthy in Houston’s summer months means staying hydrated, exercising early morning outdoors, or adopting indoor physical activities. More recently, I have been warned about Ozone Action Days and it has prompted me to figure out what that means. This is declared when the weather conditions combine with pollutants to form high level of ozone near the ground, causing harmful health effects. The Environmental Protection Agency has provided a scale rating daily air quality called the AQI (Air Quality Index). To see the latest forecast of air quality conditions in the metropolitan areas in Texas, go to www.tceq.texas.gov . Stay informed and stay healthy. The higher the AQI, the greater the health concern. The biggest issue with high ozone concentration is the damage it causes to health, especially children. High concentrations of ozone can cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation, and lung damage. Sensitive groups, or people who suffer from lung diseases like bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, and asthma have even more trouble breathing when the air is polluted. These effects can be worse in anyone who spends significant periods of time exercising or working outdoors. Be mindful during Ozone Action Days and stay indoors, if possible. Other “actions” that we can take include: limit your driving, combine errands, postpone mowing the lawn till after 7 pm, and reduce electricity usage.

Meet MPCA’s Pet of the Month!
Laney More than just being a fantastic place to live, MPCA is home to many four-legged loved ones and we want to meet them all! To get the ball rolling for our inaugural MPCA Pet of the Month, we bring you Laney.
Laney a unique kitty with short legs, big ears and a
long tail; a breed of cat called munchkin. Her legs are VERY short. She won’t grow over a foot in height. Since she has to work extra hard to jump each step with her short little legs, Laney gets lots of exercise going up and down stairs at our place. Exploring high up places in the house is not easy for this gal! What she lacks in height, she makes up in snuggles. When she is not busy asking for treats or snuggles, Laney is “patrolling” the birds that fly by our windows overlooking Mandell Place. She usually wakes up the house around 6 am to request her breakfast so she can get an early start to her bird patrolling. Laney is very dedicated to her work which she prefers to do in a quiet corner of the house where she won’t be disturbed by my singing. Want to share your pet with MPCA? Send a note with a photo to Margaret at [email protected] so your pet can be the star of our next newsletter!

August- Yard of the Month
1617 Hawthorne
The heat is unrelenting these days but that has not affected the colors that brighten our yards. Many of our neighbors on the 1600th block of Hawthorne have proven that the heat index is no match for their will to keep MCPA colorful. This month, kudos go to the owners of 1617 Hawthorne, Mary and Kevin Keating for using large bushes that block the sun from penetrating their home. Just to the side of the porch, a large beautiful Hummingbird Bush adds specks of yellow and orange that are in
step with the brave red and gold Canna on the opposite side of the porch that survived the sun. Yellow and pink Lantana are sprouting at the edges as they welcome bees for feeding. The violet pink Vincas adorn the opposite edge as well. With the heat showing no mercy for another 6-8 weeks, and with few raindrops in the forecast, we should remember to water our plants before the leaves lighten in color or start to dry out. We’ve made it through longer, hotter days and
will certainly make it through 2018’s heatwave. Send me your pictures and nominations for Yard of the Month at [email protected]. Keep blooming MPCA!
