There's no such thing as bad weather… by Steph

Not feeling quite ready for winter? Maybe you’re dreading the cold and darkness, and

just want to hide under the duvet? I hear ya. When I’m not teaching yoga, I work partly

outdoors, and it’s particularly tough in winter. However, one of my mottos (borrowed

from Billy Connolly) is that there’s no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong clothes.

If our minds and bodies aren’t ready for change, we may end up feeling ‘under the

weather’ - dry skin, achy joints, or an anxious mind. But whilst we may feel as exposed as

the trees, remember that although the leaves may fall, trees survive because they are

rooted and strong yet flexible. Which is exactly how yoga can help us. Strong standing

postures such as the warrior and balances like the tree pose help us develop calm

steadiness. We can also include a few forward bends to relax the nervous system, and

twists for cleansing sluggish digestion and release of tension in the upper back. Even just

taking a few minutes to sit and focus on the breath can be hugely beneficial.

So switch off that box-set, put your duvet aside, and head down to the cosy Breathe

studio. You may find that afterwards, winter doesn’t seem so bad after all - the cosy

glow of indoors, warmth and comfort, good friends, mulled wine. Revel in the chance to

dig out your big knitted jumper, your waterproof coat, your gloves. Imagine if the

seasons didn’t change. We wouldn’t have a chance to change either.

Steph teaches at Breathe on Thursdays 1.15 – 2.15pm

Breathe Deeply…… by Eleanor

In Chinese Medicine, Autumn is the season of The Lung. The Lung is called The Receiver

of Qi, responsible for taking in the new. This manifests physically as breathing in the crisp

clean autumn air, filling us with the oxygen and Qi we need to function properly.

In the Autumn its important to take care of our Lungs. One of the best ways to

strengthen them is to breathe deeply into the diaphragm and the belly. The breathing

techniques used in Yoga are great for our Lung Qi

Certain foods also support the Lung. Pungent warming foods such as ginger and garlic are

great at this time of year, or try this tea to moisturise the lungs, expel phlegm and calm a

cough:

Whole flax Tea with Honey

Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and allow to steep 10 minutes.

Strain and add 1 teaspoon of honey.
