ombudsman to check on bakeries’ dough

Wages at north-west bakeries will be scrutinised by the Fair Work Ombudsman as part of a campaign to ensure workers are being paid correctly.

Inspectors will audit 160 independent and franchisee-operated retail bakeries throughout the state , including stores in St Albans, Sunshine and Taylors Lakes .

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the retail bakery sector was a persistent source of complaints, many from young workers.“We are conscious that this

industry employs a signi cant number of young workers, o en as apprentices who might be working in their rst job.

‘‘ ey can be vulnerable to exploitation because they’re o en not aware of their workplace entitlements or where to go for information and assistance.”

e Fair Work Ombudsman will also inspect a “handful” of childcare centres in Brimbank. \ BC

arts to blossom in errington e new Errington Community Centre in St Albans will include a 200-seat, multipurpose performing arts space thanks to a $2.5 million donation from the St Albans Community Centre Co-operative.

Brimbank chairman John Watson said the contribution would allow the council to deliver more than rst planned as part of its $20.5 million Errington precinct masterplan. e performing arts space, to be built by early 2016, will be located to the west and south-west of Errington Oval.

“ is doubles the scope of the project,” he said.

Administrator Peter Lewinsky said the “signi cant philanthropic gesture” was a boon for residents.

“ It’s something that happens from time to time, but you never think it will happen in your community,” he said.

Co-operative president and former Keilor mayor Jack Sheridan said the group was pleased to fund a project that would bene t all St Albans residents. \ BC

speeding hoons give angry parents the humpDEER PARK

Pleas for speed humps near two Deer Park childcare centres have been answered.

Koreena Carlton , who has a child enrolled at Deer Park Children’s Community Centre, organised a petition with 80 signatures that urged Brimbank council to help slow down hoons in Hume and Hyde streets.

Tra c surveys done in a 50km/h zone on Hume Street from 3-4pm showed some vehicles travelling at up to 90km/h .

Last Wednesday night, council administrators approved plans for two speed humps in Hume and Hyde streets.

e council will also create a T-intersection at the junction of the streets.

“Cars are going way too fast,” Mrs Carlton said.

“It’s meant to be 50km/h in a residential area. Speed humps would bring cars down to 10-15km/h .

“ ere’s so much happening down that street. I’ve had two kids come through the [community] centre and it was exactly the same ve years ago.”

Centre director Silvana Borg said the petition was borne out of parents’ frustration and fears about the safety of their children.

police threaten penalties

Brimbank and Melton police will crack down on speed and parking infringements in school safety zones during a two-day blitz on October 7 and 8.

Suburbs targeted will include Ardeer, Caroline Springs, Delahey, Hillside, Keilor, Keilor Downs, Keilor North, Kings Park, St Albans, St Albans South, Sunshine, Sunshine North , Sunshine West, Sydenham, Taylors Hill and Taylors Lakes.

Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said police would show no mercy.

“It’s essential that drivers obey these limits,” he said. “We won’t tolerate any excuses and if we pull you over doing the wrong thing, expect to be penalised.” \

“ ey got sick of people ying past as they were dropping o their children,” she said.

e council’s infrastructure and environment director, Paul Younis , said a timeframe for the speed humps had not been set.

“ e construction will depend on funding, and the recommendation was for funding in future capital works programs ,” he said. \

CORRECTIONIn 2012-13, Brimbank council considered nes more than 120 days overdue as bad and doubtful debts, but they were not written off, as reported. The council introduced new steps to recover these debts, such as reminder letters and selecting multiple offenders for court action. When the council cannot recover the debts, they are forwarded to the infringements court, where the council eventually recovers the money through the Sheriff’s Of ce and courts.

BRIEFS brimbank takes aim at litterbugs ILLEGAL DUMPING

New enforcement units will be deployed as Brimbank council targets litterbugs in illegal dumping hotspots throughout Sunshine, Albion and St Albans.

e council will launch ‘‘rapid response units’’ for inspections, while local laws o cers will increase patrols.

More than 1100 letters have been sent to residents, owners and body corporate managers in problem areas ahead of the planned blitz, launched a er gures showed illegal dumping costs the council up to $680,000 a year.

City development director Stuart Menzies said the council was taking a harder line with litterbugs.

“Council has increased its enforcement

capability to pursue the illegal dumpers and increased its capacity to remove dumped rubbish once it has been identi ed,” he said.

“Prosecution takes place if the nes are not paid in response to council’s initial notices.”

Infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis said the blitz would

eventually be extended to other areas.Residents can dispose of old items

such as televisions, car batteries, motor oils, paint and computers at the council’s Detox Your Home

centre in Keilor Park. Cairnlea resident Bill, who did not

want his surname published, told the Weekly that a vacant Department of Defence lot next to the Western Highway, planned for a mixed-use precinct, was o en the site of illegal dumping.

“ ey drive in late at night, bust open the gate and dump their garbage in the middle

of the lot,” he said. “I also noticed a heap of contaminated soil, removed during the building of Cairnlea estate, that had been dumped in there .”

A Places Victoria spokesman said remediation works at the site had been undertaken and were undergoing nal approval by an independent auditor to meet Environment Protection Authority standards prior to any development .

An EPA spokeswoman said a groundwater audit of the site was under way.

‘‘Prior to the redevelopment of the site, the planning authority may require that an environmental audit be completed to ensure potentially contaminated land is suitable for its intended use, or to advise how to make the land suitable for its intended use,’’ she said. \

milking laughs IN AFGHANISTAN no easy gigBURNSIDE

Stand-up comedian Doug Chappel doesn’t mind admitting he felt some pressure to make a group of armed troops laugh during a comedy gig in Afghanistan .

“ ey were fairly large crowds and they’ve all got machineguns,” the Burnside resident said. “It’s pretty daunting, especially when you’re picking on audience members to make jokes.”

Chappel, who returned from his trip last week, said it was a huge honour to perform for more than 1000 troops.

He has also done shows for soldiers in East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

“When you’re able to provide enjoyment it’s really rewarding,” he said. “ e soldiers are doing a great job. ey pretty much work 12-hour days, seven days a week, and they don’t get a lot of entertainment.”

Chappel, a comedian of 15 years, said challenging aspects of the visit included not being able to tell people back home the exact details of where he was going.

“I felt safe, but it was pretty full-on tour,” he said. “ You jump on a plane to a di erent place, set up, do the show, pack up, sleep ... then y out somewhere else. And you can’t really tell anyone what you are doing.” \

no dispute, we’re a quarrelsome lotBRIMBANK

Brimbank neighbours are among the most quarrelsome in the state, according to new gures from the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria.

Data released last week shows a 2.4 per cent increase in calls for help with neighbourhood disputes last nancial year.

e centre received 755 calls from Brimbank residents, the third-highest number in the state. ey included 278 for concerns over general behaviour, up by 16 incidents

from 2011 -12; 271 for fence disputes, a rise of 12; and 106 relating to trees and shrubs.

Disputes over animals rose from ve to 10.Brimbank also recorded the second-highest

number of referrals – 115 –for further advice or mediation; down from 117.

e centre’s director, Gina Ralston, said almost 20,000 Victorians sought help last year. “ is shows that more people are seeking help at an early stage which will, hopefully, prevent smaller disputes from escalating to more complex ones,” she said.

Brimbank’s governance and community

development director, Helen Morrissey , urged residents involved in a neighbourhood dispute to seek advice. “Brimbank City Council follows a complaints procedure when issues relate to breaches of the local law, and it works collaboratively with the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria on other issues,” she said.

“ is proactive approach results in council being able to work through a volume of issues and encourages residents to approach council for assistance.” \ BEN CAMERON

nurse slams shortage ofchild health assessmentsSUNSHINE

A Brimbank health nurse has condemned failings in multi-disciplinary assessments at Sunshine Hospital.

‘Melinda’, who didn’t want her surname used, told the Weekly that long waiting lists for multi-disciplinary assessments — for children with di culties in more than one area — were “not good enough”.

“It’s a massive problem we maternal and child health nurses are facing,” she said. “We make assessments and refer the children to Sunshine Hospital only to be told they can’t be seen before they start school so they can’t be put on the waiting list. is isn’t good enough.”

As reported by the Weekly , local educators have launched a petition calling for funding for additional sta and services amid fears that 58 preschool-age children experiencing development di culties will miss out on important assessments before the 2014 school year.

BPA Children’s Services chief executive Steve Sutton , representing a cluster of

kindergartens and childcare centres, said the situation was potentially dangerous.

‘‘Schools will be overwhelmed at the start of the year when it becomes apparent that some children have additional needs that have not been diagnosed,’’ he said.

Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Wendy Lovell said

families of children not on the waiting list could access free assessments

through early school enrolment and the paediatric program at Melton Health.

“We have ensured that all children on the waiting list who

require an assessment for the 2014 school year will get one,” she said.

“Western Health is currently progressing assessments for 58 children, which will be nalised by December this year.’’

Ms Lovell said there had been no reduction to funding provided for specialist health services at Western Health. \

■ So what, Paul? It is a motoring club and well done to it for actually supporting moves to get a rail link. Do you want it to oppose a new rail link?JULIA \ VIA WEB

■ Julia, no. With its strong support and constant calls for the east- west link project, the RACV is effectively ensuring that no other infrastructure projects, including the Melbourne Airport rail link, can go ahead.

The RACV is being disingenuous as it is fully aware the east- west link will drain public infrastructure funding for a decade or more. This so-called support of the airport link is so watered down as to be

meaningless. East- west link will do nothing to help the 90 per cent of Eastern Freeway users who commute to or through the inner city. It is a truck route to connect to CityLink and the Tullamarine Freeway.PT NOT TOLLWAYS \ VIA WEB

RIDE FOR SICK KIDS(Weekly, August 20)

■ On behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), I would like to thank the Brimbank community for its generous support of the recent Ride for Sick Kids Victoria.

The week-long event, in which 35 riders, including Brooklyn’s Michael Lee, travelled 760 kilometres across the state, has raised in excess of

lead people to develop them – unemployment, disengagement, mental health, isolation and boredom. This requires community education about drug-use issues, assisting parents to nurture their children through adolescence, ensuring young people have access to jobs, helping people access health and mental health services, and providing ways for young people to be engaged with their community.

RACV wants high-speed train to tullaTRANSPORT

The RACV has thrown its support behind Brimbank council’s call for a rail link between Melbourne Airport and Sunshine. As reported in the Weekly, the council pushed for a connecting train through the Albion East airport rail alignment as part of its submission to the latest Melbourne Airport master plan.

The RACV, releasing its transport agenda for state and federal governments last week, nominated a high-speed rail link, with its own track to Melbourne Airport and limited stops as a key way to reduce

congestion, road trauma and improve community health.“RACV is of the view the rail link to Melbourne airport is essential,” public transport and mobility manager Thanuja Gunatillake said.“In our submission to the state government’s metropolitan planning strategy, RACV was supportive of the establishment of a well-connected activities centre in Melbourne’s west.

“Should Sunshine be nominated as this area as part of the new planning strategy, the Albion East airport rail alignment, connecting to regional and metropolitan train services at Sunshine, would be consistent

with the needs of an activities centre.”The RACV says a “polycentric city” — effectively a mini-CBD with a concentration of jobs, education and services — should be located in Melbourne’s west.“Given the population growth in Melbourne’s west, RACV supports designation of a centre in this region,” Ms Gunatillake said.“It is critical that an activity centre be supported by a good transport network as we have seen in many parts of outer Melbourne.”The RACV urged the state government to make a “solid commitment” to an airport rail link, with detailed planning and a proposed timeframe. \

Katrina Bourke (pictured), of St Peters Primary School in Sunshine , has been nominated for the national excellence in teaching awards. The deputy principal, who has taught at St Peters for three years, said she was excited for the whole school community. ‘‘I was nominated, but I’m part of a team and staff who work hard to build a vibrant school,” she said. Ms Bourke said her job was about more than educating pupils and included encouraging community participation and getting parents involved in school activities. “ We’ve found that if parents engage, then the kids do better,” she said. “[The parents] have created a community cooking club. There’s fantastic family involvement .” The award winners will be named on October 25. \ ANGELA SCICLUNA

When the director of Disney’s Camp Rock - The Musical told Deer Park singer Emily-Jane Purificato (centre), 18, she had won a major

role, she screamed with excitement. Having already performed in a production of High School Musical, she knew she was about to be part of a great show.

Favourite neighbourhood retreat?Keilor cemetery. I like to visit my grandfather there. He died almost six years ago, and I reminisce about the good times we had together. He paid for my singing lessons, starting my career. I also like hanging out at Trill Music Studio in Caroline Springs. I feel happiest when I’m there.

Favourite place to get coffee or a bite to eat?I like La Porchetta at Watergardens; the garlic prawns and chicken parmas are good. Tin Roof Cafe on Keilor Road – everything is good there.

What would you change in your neighbourhood?I don’t think I’d change anything except the Deer Park train station’s location. It’s behind my house and it’s too noisy!

What wouldn’t you change?I like the shopping centres, particularly Watergardens. And everyone in my street is really friendly; we live in a family-oriented area.

Most embarrassing moment when out and about? At the movies in 2007 I was checking out a good-looking guy and I slipped on a piece of paper on the floor. He saw me fall over. That was embarrassing! \

Jasmine envelops the Footscray cottage where 1920s detective and femme extraordinaire Phryne Fisher perches on the kitchen table of author Kerry Greenwood.

The heady scent of a million white blossoms counters the traffic and fast food distractions at the end of the street, offering the visitor a very real illusion of passing through a time zone to where this most prolific of writers fuels her fascination with history and the largely under-written roles that women have within its more conventional tomes.

Research and attention to detail are her greatest allies, along with a vivid imagination and an ability to walk in other people’s shoes, even centuries later.

“I am addicted to researching,” Greenwood says very early on in our interview when we are talking about Out of the Black Land, her only novel, of more than 50 thus far, set in ancient Egypt.

“Egyptian and Hittite history are quite well documented,” she says.

“What attracted me about [researching] Egypt is that there are love songs and shopping lists, jokes and graffiti ... and the textiles; all that gold.”

This wealth of daily life details, the minutiae of how ancient Egyptian society was organised, along with its close connections to early Greece, inspired Greenwood to pose serious academic questions about the era of 18 dynasty kings and the nation’s deadly dalliance with monotheism under the unstable, sun-god worshipping king Akhnaten.

It was learning Greek that transported Greenwood’s already fertile imagination and gift for words and languages into the timeless zone of myths and fairy tales, epic adventures and personal quests.

“I’m an honorary wog, you know,” Greenwood says proudly, pointing out that along the short Seddon street where she has lived for more than 30 years, there are 26 different languages spoken.

She learnt Greek, aged five, after meeting her lifelong friend Themetrula Georgovasilopoulos, who had migrated to Footscray with her family.

French came from school and Sicilian Latin from other neighbourhood children. Multicultural Melbourne provided the playgrounds of her youth.

“I read dictionaries; I still love dictionaries,” Greenwood confesses.

It was once said of American poet, author and social activist Marge Piercy that “she could weave a tale with a pebble and a thread”. Greenwood is of the same ilk, but it took Melbourne publisher Hilary McPhee to focus the almost 30-year-old Greenwood on detective stories and crime fiction as the medium for her writing.

As she was already working full time as a duty solicitor at Sunshine court, Greenwood insisted her first two-book contract with McPhee be historically based.

“I was afraid I would steal a client’s case,” she says.“Poor darlings have enough on their plates without

me stealing their stories. I thought this would be unethical.”

Besides, history is Greenwood’s muse, her fountain of knowledge and the basis of her understanding of herself and her city.

The Phryne Fisher book series is set in 1928-29, the time of “the great wharf strike” at the Melbourne docks, an era that had piqued Greenwood’s curiosity since a thesis from her student days.

It was the time between the two ‘great’ world wars, just before the global depression of the 1930s, and an era of great opportunity for young women prepared to take their chances at financial independence rather than domestic spinsterhood, as was the lot of many a maiden aunt as a result of the dearth of marriageable men due to WWI.

Named after a fabled Corinthian courtesan, Phryne Fisher was created on the tram ride home from Greenwood’s meeting with McPhee.

“I gave her a minor English title so no one can overawe her,” her creator says. “And she’s going to have money and do exactly as she wishes. I wanted her to have complete freedom of action.”

Not for Phryne the “pillow talk” take on how women

build influence; Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is as capable of wielding a pistol, and shooting it if necessary, as she is competent behind the wheel or under the bonnet of her beloved red Hispano-Suiza motor car.

She is as much at home on the battlefields of Flanders and the back streets of Chinatown as she is in the parlours of people of power and persuasion.

“By the time I got off the tram, she’d walked into my head,” Greenwood recalls.

“She has a strong sense of justice. She’s living in a very intense world where all bets are off.

“And because she is a hero, she always works it out eventually. She’s seldom wrong.”

After her sixth Phryne Fisher murder mystery, Greenwood grew concerned she was becoming formula-driven and, not wanting to go down the Agatha Christie track, decided to strip her character down to bare bones for Blood and Circuses (1994).

“She came out of it a goddess,” enthuses Greenwood.

a history of mystery

Kerry Greenwood’s feisty creation is a global star,

writes HELEN GRIMAUX

“I love when Phryne comes in and sits on the corner of the table and says, ‘oh, darling, that was amazing!’”

Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is now making her 20th appearance in print and starring in a TV series that is redefining the world view of Australia and, more importantly, Melbourne, even winning over notoriously snobby French art critics and absolutely wow-ing audiences in New York, London, Paris ... and Brazil.

“And there’s not a single Skippy in the whole series,” Greenwood points out.

The 20th Phryne Fisher mystery, Murder and Mendelssohn, was released on September 25 by Allen and Unwin. It is Greenwood’s second publication this year. \

This new, architecturally designed house has a practical floor plan and a next-to-no-maintenance exterior.

On the ground floor, there’s a tiled hallway with recessed ceiling and a semi-open bedroom with storage wardrobes, which could also serve as an office.

The open-plan living hub is a highlight. With plenty of natural light, it has two sets of sliding doors on to a patio, providing easy

entertainment options. The tiled family-meals and living area flanks a designer kitchen with high-gloss cabinetry, soft-closing drawers, 40mm stone benchtops, Euro stainless-steel appliances and a nook for a dishwasher – all beneath a bulkhead ceiling.

The downstairs bathroom has a shower and toilet, and there’s a door to a storage compartment under the stairs.

Upstairs are two bedrooms and a sparkling bathroom with large glossy tiles and a shower

with hand-held showerhead. There’s also a separate toilet.

Each of the bedrooms has large windows with rooftop views. One of the rooms has built-in wardrobes and an en suite; the smaller room has a walk-in wardrobe.

As well, there are ducted heating and refrigerated air-conditioning, stone benches in all the wet areas, ample storage, and a water tank.

A stone aggregate driveway links to a

single garage with remote control. The small courtyard is accessed from both the back door of the garage and the laundry. Stone aggregate paving circles the patio.

The north-east-facing property is a clear winner when it comes to location, being just a stone’s throw from Glengala shops and schools, with a quick commute getting you to Harvester Road and the railway station. \

For help or more information on how to get digital ready in your area:

Authorised by the Australian Government, Capital Hill, Canberra

The areas shaded maroon above show where the analog TV signals will be switched off on 10 December 2013*. After this date, these areas will receive digital-only signals. If you haven’t already done so, you need to get ready for digital-only TV.

How do I tell if I have digital TV? If you can see ABC2, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO or Eleven, you are digital ready and don’t need to do anything.

If I can’t see those channels, what do I have to do?Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either:• one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or• a new TV with a built-in digital tuner.

Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to.

Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling.

If you have any other questions, or to fi nd your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Get ready for digital TV today.

Analog TV is being switched off in Melbourne and surrounding areas on 10 December 2013*

*Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Each year as the weather warms up we look towards summer trends in wine. In the past few years it has been savoury

rosé, barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc or the new wave of lean, refreshing chardonnay.

I’m no oracle, but I reckon this year it’s time to turn back the clock and start drinking an often-forgotten, highly refreshing white: the semillon sauvignon blanc blend. It isn’t as fashionable as straight sauvignon blanc, or as pretty as pink, but it’s a bloody good drink.

I must admit to being guilty of ignoring this blend, too. Rather than put the sem sav samples that arrive straight into the fridge, they tend to pile up at our house until I line a bunch up for tasting.

Every time I promise myself to drink more of it. This year I’m going to stick to the promise. If you’re getting a bit sick of sav blanc or looking for a change – as many people tell me they are – the sem/sav blend, or sav/sem in many cases, makes a really good change.

There’s one slight problem with these wines – tracking them down. Semillon sauvignon blanc’s waning popularity means they’re literally disappearing from our shelves. A few years ago major wine shops had sections dedicated to semillon sauvignon blanc blends – now you’re likely to find them filed under

“other” whites. They’ve been doing the blend in the

illustrious Bordeaux region of France for hundreds of years, and Margaret River, arguably the home of Australian Bordeaux-style wines, has been doing it for 30 years.

The success of pinot noir and chardonnay in the Yarra Valley in recent years has taken the focus away from the fact the region was first planted with such grapes as cabernet

sauvignon, merlot and semillon by the region’s early pioneers. These still excel.

“When Margaret River was identified as a high-quality, fine-wine producing region, particularly for the Bordeaux varieties, people ran around planting cabernet sauvignon,

merlot, cabernet franc, and for whites they went for semillon and sauvignon

blanc for white wine,” says Margaret River winemaker Brad Wehr, who makes a semillon sauvignon blanc under the Wine By Brad label.

“I like semillon and sauvignon blanc on their own but, when you stick the two together, you start to think, ‘well, that’s the best way to have them’. Semillon is more in the line of citrus fruit characters and sauvignon blanc is more in line with tropical, pineapple characters, and the pair together provide a real

fruit salad cocktail.”It’s not just the flavours that combine so

neatly, but the steely acid of semillon balances out sav blanc’s often fruit-forward structure.

“In terms of structural elements, I call semillon the base wine, which forms a cushiony mattress that provides a bed for the

sauvignon blanc to sit on,” says Wehr.“In the nose department, the semillon

has the citrus, grassy characters and sauvignon has the higher notes – the tropicals and florals – and together they make a great blend.” \

MOTORINg \ rod easdown gets behind the wheel

There can’t be many devices that are as technically advanced, or built to finer tolerances, than the diesel motors

coming out of Europe. They are remarkable. The key to smooth running is breaking the

fuel into the smallest droplets possible, and it’s done by increasing the injection pressure at the cylinder. Fuel enters the cylinders of modern European diesels at 2050 Bar. How much is that? Were you to balance a Land Cruiser on a single stiletto heel, you’d be about there.

And they’re made to run more quietly by a pilot burn, injecting a tiny amount of fuel – about enough to sit on a pin head – to start the burn before the main injection of fuel follows a millisecond or two later. A jet travelling at 1000 km/h would cover 25 centimetres in the time between the pilot burn and main burn.

Getting all this to happen a couple of thousand times a minute takes incredibly fine timing and production tolerances. Fuel channels entering the cylinder are a micron wide. Human hair is anything from 20 to 60 microns thick.

It also takes the right fuel. We didn’t get the good European diesel motors here until 2005. Until then our diesel fuel carried too much sulphur for them. The Americans were a couple of years behind us.

Until lately, Japanese diesel motors have been the almost-exclusive province of 4WD and commercial vehicles but, to sell

cars in serious volumes into Europe, Japanese manufacturers have to produce diesels that

not only comply with Euro emission regulations but are also competitive.

They’re getting there, but there |is still refinement to achieve. Mazda is now making a push into the technology in passenger cars and SUVs.The 2.2-litre diesel in the Mazda 6

is a bit noisier and not quite as smooth as those coming out of Europe, but it’s every bit as economical and that’s probably enough

for the bulk of buyers. If you can live with a little extra clatter as the car idles, and deeper, growlier induction noise when you accelerate, this car is a definite proposition, even at a premium of about $3000 on the equivalent petrol model.

The Mazda 6 is such a good thing anyway that getting the bonus of brilliant economy becomes very attractive. It looks good, drives beautifully and has generous cabin space, and it’s a pretty good deal.

Why not have it all? \[email protected]

iaccarino jets to medal honours FOOTBALL

Consistent form and tness was the key to David Iaccarino’s run to the Western Jets’ highest honour, the Barry Round Medal.

Iaccarino walked away with the coveted best-and-fairest award a er returning to the club under the 19-year-old rule this season.

e Williamstown Juniors product put behind him an injury-marred rst two years in the TAC Cup and repaid the faith shown in him by Jets region manager Shane Sexton.

“It’s de nitely been one of my most consistent seasons ... my best year so far,” Iaccarino told the Weekly.

“I really wanted a full year at the Jets so I was fortunate Shane let me come back.”

A move into the mid eld, endorsed by head coach Torin Baker and mid eld coach Craig DeCorsey, paid dividends for Iaccarino.

Previously pigeon-holed in a rebounding hal ack role, the 19-year-old blossomed into one of the standout players in the competition when given more freedom to roam.

He complemented his noted

outside run and silky skills with some hard work in the midst of the packs and found a way to kick goals from the mid eld.

Iaccarino’s in uence was signi cant in getting the Jets to the nals.

“ ey’ve been massive this year in my development as a mid elder,”

Iaccarino said of his coaches. “ e mid eld is where I love

to play and I was happy they threw me in there and put their faith in me. Hopefully, I delivered.”

If there’s a question mark over Iaccarino, it’s the state of

his shoulders. His bottom-age year was ruined

when he required a reconstruction of the right shoulder, and he’ll have surgery on his le one during this o -season.

e positive is that Iaccarino has no recurring issues on the right side.

“I’ve been playing with a bad [le ] shoulder all year so I’ve got to get that xed up.

“ e right one feels good so I’m pretty con dent the le one will hold up a er it’s xed.”

Iaccarino, who lives in Williamstown, has nominated for November’s AFL national dra and

has spoken to “a couple” of AFL clubs. He feels as if he put his best foot

forward during the season and the rest is out of his hands.

“I’ll try to stay as t as possible up until the dra ,” Iaccarino said.

“Even if I don’t get picked up I’ve been happy with the year I put forward and I can go back to the VFL and nd some avenues there.”

Reds turn final into ok corralsoccer

e team with the best defence will emerge with the spoils, right?

Gun-slinging Cairnlea thumbed its nose at that theory by out-shooting all and sundry en route to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3 north-west title.

e Reds were the entertainers of the west, playing with air and scoring goals for fun.

eir sharpshooting, eet-footed strike force, led by Adamson Ajayi and Adem Alicevic, had a campaign to remember with the side nishing with 53 goals at an average of 2.4 per game.

“Our two strikers nished one and two in the league for top goalscorers,” Reds president Beige Hussein told the Weekly.

“ ey scored almost 40 goals between them.”

It was with a touch of irony that the Reds relied on their defence to seal the point that took them to the title.

e last game was full of tension for both the Reds, sitting on top, and second-placed Sunbury United, with both sides knowing a last round draw would be enough to get them both promoted.

A slip-up for either side could have spelled disaster with third-placed North Sunshine Eagles ready to pounce, so the eventual nil-all

outcome was convenient for both. Everyone was relieved because if we’d lost, it would’ve given North Sunshine a chance, so it was a nervy game,” Hussein said.

“It was a bit of a strange one because both of the coaches packed the defence. We had six in our backline, they had six in theirs, so there was nowhere to go. It turned out well in the end.”

e Reds were able to give favourite son Mustafa Mustafa a triumphant homecoming.

Mustafa le to play in higher leagues when the Reds were under their previous name, Albion Rovers.

He was one of the main on- eld leaders. “He used to be a junior and came back at the ripe old age of 35 and got the team promoted,” Hussein said. “He’s a standout on the eld.”

Quizzed on potential best and fairest candidates, Hussein reeled o the names Ajayi, Alicevic, Mustafa and Paul Muscat before pausing: “I would hate to choose, there’s so many in with a chance”.

e Reds were the dominant side in the rst half of the season but hit a rough patch with one point from three games from rounds 18 to 20 with the nish line in sight.

Hussein is adamant the Reds were the best side over the duration and deserve to be promoted as champions.

Dragsters return to calder park

Drag racing

Championship-level drag racing will return to Calder Park raceway next month with a round of the Australian National Drag Racing Association series.

Top fuel dragsters, top bikes and pro stock motorcycles will be among the categories competing for championship points on October 19.

It will be the rst ANDRA-sanctioned event in Melbourne for 12 years.

“Melbourne has been without top- ight drag racing for too long and this return will be massive for both the motorsports community and the local economy,” ANDRA boss Malcolm Bulley said.

“Top fuel dragsters make 8000 horsepower and accelerate to 500km/h in just ve seconds. It’s something you need to see to believe.”

More ANDRA events are scheduled for Calder Park next year as the series expands to a record eight venues.

“Bringing Melbourne back into this fold will be great for our strong Victorian drag racing contingent,” Bulley said.

crows’ new skipper sees a ray of sunshineCricket

Sunshine heads into the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season under new leadership and with a brighter outlook.

e Crows followed up the appointment of head coach Mark Brown by elevating batting all-rounder Kane Twentyman to the captaincy.

Twentyman has been with the Crows for ve years. He’s been a valuable contributor in a shaky top order and can be used as a change bowler.

e 26-year-old told the Weekly it would be a “great honour” to lead the Crows into the eld of battle for the season opener against Bayswater.

“It’s something unexpected from my part,” Twentyman said.

“I’m more than excited to take it on and see how I go.”

e buzz around Dempster Park is one of optimism.

eir draw was favourable, with the west group sides avoiding the stronger clubs from the north and south.

e Crows will venture to the eastern

suburbs on only three occasions and will get one of those out of the way in the opening round.

Although Sunshine is coming o a wooden spoon in 2013, the senior team’s form a er Christmas was promising and its only two wins of the season came a er the

festive break. e Achilles heel, a mis ring top order, may be about to remedy itself with the return of John Blake and the arrival of four imports from England, three of whom are top-order batsmen.

“ ey’ve created depth in our batting stocks and that was high on

the priority list,” Twentyman said. “ ree of the four guys from England are batsmen or batting all-rounders.”

Bowling has been a strength of the Crows in past summers.

ey haven’t pursuaded Andrew Webb to return, but in Kapelan Kulendranathan, James Leach and Laki Khan, they are well stocked for new-ball operators.

Twentyman is happy with the list. “I’ve been there ve years and it’s probably in the strongest position it has been in the years leading up to a season.”

It’s a big year for Twentyman with the added responsibility of the captaincy.

He admits he’s a raw leader but won’t have to go far for advice and isn’t afraid to ask questions of former skipper Troy Stone.

“Troy’s one of the better tactical captains I’ve played under,” Twentyman said. “I will be strongly leaning on him to help steer us through these early rounds en, as the season progresses and I get more con dence, we’ll move on from there.”

Twentyman won’t hesitate to make the big calls, and he says positions in the rst XI will be hard earned.

“I’m going to try to set some boundaries and have some consistent things for the guys to achieve in regards to punctuality and commitment,” he said.

“We’re only really looking to select guys who are willing to and want to be there, as opposed to getting a game on their name. We’re looking to put a bit of a stamp on it that way.”

e Victorian Turf Cricket Association, Williamstown and District Cricket Association and North West Metropolitan Cricket Association will also play their opening rounds this weekend.
