look out for burglars, robbery victims warn publicCRIME

A distraught Albanvale couple has warned Brimbank residents to be on alert for thieves following a brazen daytime robbery.

Scott, who su ers from post-traumatic stress disorder and insomnia and did not want his surname printed, said he was gutted to nd a laptop, digital camera and iPod had been stolen a er he and his partner le their house for a few hours to attend a counselling session on January 23.

“We’re not well and only go out very rarely,”

Brimbank remains among the state’s most-burgled municipalities, despite rates

being close to a ve-year low.A recent RACV study revealed

Brimbank had four suburbs in the top-10 burglary hotspots, led by Ardeer, where one in 27 houses was burgled last nancial year.

Scott urged Brimbank residents to keep watch for their neighbours and

report suspicious behaviour to police. “ e community of Brimbank should be

made aware these types of criminals could

he said. “I used the iPod to try to relax and go to sleep at night. Now I have nothing.

‘‘My partner is also a very keen photographer and it was her joy to take photographs. She is now without a camera or laptop to produce her photos on.”

Scott’s partner, Sarah, said somebody knocked on their door a few weeks before the the and tried to wrench it open.

And she said neighbours had also been burgled recently.

be targeting properties in the area,” he said. ‘‘I already su er from extreme anxiety and this has been heightened. I don’t feel safe here.’’

Caroline Springs police Senior Sergeant Kerin Moloney said that even though residential burglary rates had declined, the community had an important role to play.

“We ask the community to report any suspicious behaviour and to have a basic security strategy for their homes,” he said. \

$350,000: that’s our daily pokies loss

2012 2013

WYNDHAM $74.61M $90.15M

BRIMBANK $125.97M $128.16M

SOURCE \ Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation

BRIMBANK

More than $350,000 was lost on Brimbank’s 946 poker machines every day last year, according to the latest data .

Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation gures reveal that a total of $128 million was lost on pokies in 2013 – up from $125.97 million in 2012.

Brimbank had the biggest losses in the state, while Wyndham was eighth.

e new gures come as the Greens call for spending limits on pokies.

Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the party was dra ing a bill to introduce $1 limits on all machines.

‘‘Evidence of ve trials across Australia shows that voluntary pre-commitment will not limit the harm of problem gambling,’’ she said.

“And 88 per cent of recreational gamblers don’t bet more than $1 a spin, so most punters won’t even notice the change.’’

Monash University researcher Dr Charles Livingstone has previously called for $1 limits in outer suburbs.

HealthWest project manager James Dunne said increasing losses showed problem gambling was on the rise and there was a need to remove pokies from where people lived to make it more di cult to gamble.

“Research suggests the location and ease that pokies can be accessed increases the risks of people experiencing gambling-related harm,” he said. “ ese people might not be de ned as problem gamblers. But they’re still likely to experience many of the negative impacts of problem gambling, such as nancial troubles,

anxiety, stress and relationship issues.” Brimbank council community well-being

director Neil Whiteside said the municipality’s electronic gambling policy called for a reduction of the number of pokies in Brimbank and improved support services. \

submission on toxic site withdrawn from hearingDEER PARK

e Environment Protection Authority’s submission to a panel about the future use of contaminated land in Deer Park was withdrawn before the hearing began.

As reported by the Weekly, an independent panel received 14 submissions about manufacturing giant Orica’s application to have 72 hectares rezoned from industrial to commercial, with two state government agencies advising against it.

e state Development, Business and Innovation Department said it feared the panel’s approval could eventually lead to a school being built 200 metres from a plant involved in “signi cant chemical production”.

Orica wants to sell the site, which is believed to be contaminated with lead.

An EPA spokeswoman said its issues with the proposed amendment had been resolved before the hearing and the authority would not provide a copy of its submission.

“EPA Victoria raised with Brimbank council the issue of potential adverse amenity impacts if any sensitive uses were to be established in the eastern section of

the site,” the spokeswoman said.“ is was discussed and EPA was able to satisfy itself that any sensitive uses would require a planning permit and that council would assess these applications and use its discretion

as the responsible authority, and additional controls would not be

needed.” e panel found that ‘odour modelling’

undertaken was not adequate to determinate a separation distance between the existing industrial area and “possible sensitive uses”.

e site is on the eastern edge of the Deer Park major activity centre, which includes a shopping centre and railway station.

Brimbank council will vote on the plans on February 11. \

no charges over violent killingCRIME

A group of people arrested a er a Diggers Rest man was killed during a home invasion in Deer Park have been released without charge.

Police believe a group of more than 10 men in their late teens and early 20s, forced their way into the house with seven people inside .

It’s thought the two groups know each other. Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Tremain said the weapons used may have included

machetes. Police were called about 10pm a er neighbours heard screams and breaking glass.

One neighbour reported seeing a group of men with metal bars, timber and possibly baseball bats outside the house earlier.

e neighbour said the men “rushed the house”.

When police arrived, a 20-year-old man was dead, another man had cuts to his hand and a woman was treated for leg injuries.

council leader soon to be named

A replacement for outgoing Brimbank administrator Peter Lewinsky is expected to be named soon .

Mr Lewinsky, who stood down last ursday to take on a new role with Darebin council, said he had suggested several names for the position but could not disclose further information.

As reported by the Weekly on January 21, Mr Lewinsky said he was con dent the council scheduled to be elected in March next year would thrive due to a cultural change created under administrators’ watch since late 2009.

In other matters relating to local administration, the state government has introduced new powers to allow Victorian mayors to eject misbehaving councillors from meetings.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said the impetus for the changes was “beyond what occurred at Brimbank” in 2009 and followed several examples of inappropriate behaviour statewide over many years.

e new laws will give mayors the power to suspend a councillor from a meeting a er two warnings. \ BC

Ms Nguyen was moved a er hearing a talk by Cambodian sex tra cking victim Somaly Mam , who escaped her captors and has dedicated her life to rescuing tortured women through a charitable foundation.

“I heard Somaly Mam speak at a breakfast event with Business Chicks, an association I’m a member of, ” Ms Nguyen said. “When I saw the cycle challenge event pop up in September last year, I thought it was the right time and an opportunity for me to jump on board.”

Ms Nguyen will ride up to 105 kilometres a day as her team visits rescue centres across the country before nishing in Sihanoukville . Her team hopes to raise at least $7000 for the foundation. \

‘We pride ourselves on being known as the community club of the AFL,” says Western Bulldogs community engagement manager Kiemi Lai.

Lai, along with players and staff, is preparing for the club’s community camp in Melton and Bacchus Marsh this week.

While all AFL clubs take part in community camps around Australia, for the Bulldogs the camps continue the work they’re already doing.

“We did request Melton as our camp’s location as it was part of our blitz of getting into the community last year and we wanted to continue that work,” Lai says.

“In Melton we’ve been working on building the ‘friendly schools’ program, a relationship with the Western Region Football League and involvement with Auskick clinics.”

The camp represents only a small part of the Bulldogs’ community work in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The club works in five regions – Melton, Wyndham, Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay – and has connections with Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh as well.

“The club has a very broad program which is split into three different groups,” says Lai.

“We have three pillars in our community work: the ‘Fresh’, disability training and community training programs.”

Lai says she’s not sure whether there’s any other sporting club that runs a community education service like Fresh, which has “nothing to do with football”.

“It’s a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) program and we have our own classrooms set up with teachers and staff,” she says of the program which allows young people who have had problems with mainstream education to complete senior secondary qualifications.

“It provides a pathway to continue education in a very unique way.”

The club’s disability program, on the other hand, focuses on using football as a medium to keep people engaged.

“We were writing various training programs when we entered into a partnership with Victoria University,” Lai says.

giving’s in the game planPlaying football is just a part of what the Western Bulldogs do, writes Tara murray

“The Total Footy program, which is part of this, sees the participants come to Whitten Oval and do a whole term of footy learning. It gives an opportunity to be connected and part of the club – and complete a certificate.

“Anything to do with the club, they just jump on it and it keeps them engaged.”

Lai runs the community education part of the club’s programs. “We are such a multicultural community club and we cannot get away from it.

“Wyndham and Melton are such vast and growing areas with more of a range of backgrounds.

“Using sports, we target under-represented groups like refugees, new arrivals, indigenous Australians and people affected by homelessness.”

Lai believes the community education program funded by the Department of Immigration is something that makes the club’s work stand out.

“I think that we would be the only club receiving settlement grants [from the department].

“We found it has been successful using sport as a vehicle to go with this as people with limited English can still be a part of it.

“We work really closely with language centres and have formed partnerships with them.”

Werribee’s Wee Thaw moved to Australia from Thailand in 2007 and, two years later, joined the club’s New and Emerging Communities Youth Leadership Program in Hobsons Bay.

“[When] we came here, we didn’t know anything about the community we had moved into or other communities in Australia,” he recalls.

“Through my school I got involved in the youth initiative program where there were so many activities, and I learned about leadership.

“We met new friends, learned about Australia, and it was an honour to be a part of it.”

Like many participants in the programs run by the Bulldogs, Thaw, now 22, returned to the program in 2010 as a volunteer.

Lai says the club aims to keep participants involved with

multiple programs. “When I started in 2006 we were doing a lot of programs and were driving the demand.

“We have no problems getting people to the activities now. We have some core programs and are able to maintain these connections.”

“Our culturally and linguistically diverse program sees us working with people who are 16 and older and with that program we see people transition from being a participant and then trying to find new ways to engage, like being a volunteer.”

It’s not only the program recipients who benefit. The Bulldogs players are involved, too.

“Bob Murphy is the ambassador for the Fresh program and Liam Picken is our multicultural ambassador,” says Lai.

“They get involved in various areas of the programs, but it’s not necessarily about the players being the centre of all the attention.

“In our Koori youth project, we have three indigenous players on the list, Brett Goodes, Koby Stevens and Liam

Jones, and they’ve been really connected on a personal level with the participants.”

Key-position player Jordan Roughead says the community camps are a great way to give back to the community.

“I think all the players love it, just giving a bit of their time back to fans who support them,” says

Roughead.“It’s great to get out there and have a kick with the kids and

see the smiles on their faces.“We do community camps, country visits, school visits and a

range of programs throughout the year.“I loved doing it as a kid. It was always pretty special to have

an AFL footballer come out and have a kick with you.“It’s great to be in that position now, being able to teach kids

and see them having fun.”Roughead says the camps and visits also offer an

opportunity to turn kids and other fans into lifelong supporters.

“The reaction is always positive; they’re always excited. We’re stoked to be there and they are stoked to have us there.” \

It is the beginning of the year, but we have already had two milestone events in the municipality that are the result of Council lobbying the State Government.

Recently I joined Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay MP in Melton South to turn the the Atherstone and Botanica Springs Children’s and Community Centres which will deliver quality programs, services and early learning opportunities

FEBRUARY 4, 2014 \ BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST WEEKLY 11

Lovingly cared for, as evidenced by its immaculate start-to-finish renovation, this weatherboard gem sits a stone’s throw from Glengala Road shops.

There are up to four spacious bedrooms – two have built-in wardrobes and ornate ceilings, while the main bedroom has a fan, fitted walk-in wardrobe and en suite with rainhead shower over bath. One bedroom at the front is

spacious enough to be used as a sitting room and has a decorative fireplace, dark mocha walls, an airconditioning unit, ornate ceiling, sun- and block-out blinds.

A hallway with floating floorboards leads to the open-plan living hub, which includes a carpeted living area with split-system and a family-meals area adjoining the kitchen with earthy floor tiles. The freshly presented kitchen includes plenty of underbench and overhead

cabinetry, a glass splashback, Fisher & Paykel dishwasher and a Euro stainless-steel oven and gas hotplates. Behind is a laundry which leads to a bathroom with rainhead shower.

The outdoor deck, partly covered with timber wall and ceiling, provides easy access to the jacuzzi, which is near to bamboo landscaping. The deck also includes a designated area for a dining table.

Another highlight is the fully paved side

driveway leading to a huge industrial-style garage. The new owners would be able to fit at least two cars here, while the high, peaked roof means larger vehicles, boats and caravans could also be accommodated.

The backyard also includes a bungalow/studio, which doubles as a storage room, while there’s a shed, high-grown hedges and Colorbond fencing at the back. \

There will be no need to worry about power outages at this property which has solar panels to keep the bills down. But that’s just one of its strong points.

The house is ready for a makeover but can be lived in now and renovated in future; so for an investor it comes loaded with development potential.

There are three bedrooms, including the main with ceiling fan; a bathroom; laundry with second toilet; carpeted lounge room; sunroom; large kitchen with blue cupboards providing an abundance of storage space; and a meals zone.

Two air-conditioners and roller shutters will keep the family cool in summer, while gas heating takes the edge off in winter.

A long, wide driveway provides ample off-street parking space, and there’s a shed and low-maintenance manicured gardens included out the back.

The 650-square-metre property is in a quiet court and could be subdivided, subject to council approval.

Childcare and four primary schools are within walking distance. \

MOTORINg

I taly is the hot mover in the car industry right now. Fiat’s 2013 sales were up by 7½ times 2012’s figures (3854 against

513), and Alfa Romeo’s more than doubled (2373 against 906). The reason is that their Australian distribution was taken in-house and prices have been slashed, in some cases by more than a third.

The rumour is the Australians were told by the Italians that if they wanted factory help in achieving their red-hot pricing on the cute little Fiat 500 and the Alfa Giulietta, they’d have to take a couple of additional models they maybe wouldn’t normally consider. Which would explain the Panda.

It’s tall, like a commercial van, but seats five (mind you, three in the back is a real squeeze). It’s too small for an SUV – the boot will take only one suitcase, and that’s vertically – and its aesthetics are decidedly industrial.

Vfacts, the industry’s official scorer, defines it as a light car, there being no “odd little wagon” category.

It’s aimed at an uber-niche market, and even though prices start at $16,500 sales are proving to be uber-modest.

Mind you, I can think of a ready market; it’s ideal for kids who have just got their licence. It’s not terribly powerful but it can keep up with traffic, it’s extremely economical and it gets a five-star safety rating. While it does most things adequately, it forces its driver to

think about the act of driving – of being in the right gear, getting the cornering line right, sensing its limits and learning how to stop. It thus demands concentration of its driver.

The equipment is light. It gets air but there’s no cruise. There are self-wind rear windows and manual door-mirror adjustment.

The driver gets a vanity mirror, the passenger doesn’t.

But the Panda gets a good little “I think I can” motor that winds up nicely and doesn’t

sound bad as it does, and the manual gears are light and reasonably fast. Don’t buy an auto; it’s a horrible gearbox mated to a different, noisy and rather rough two-cylinder engine.

The handling is only adequate but you do get an idea of the Panda’s limits quickly. The ride is firmish, the seating comfort OK but a bit trying after a couple of hours.

For all of the negatives, it’s an easy car to warm to. I became quite fond of it. \

BRIEFSkey clash goes to tribunalCricket

e all-important ninth round was supposed to provide a de nitive edge in the race for the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 minor premiership.

Taylors Lakes and Altona Roosters, the top two sides in the competition and separated by just one premiership point, were locked in an absorbing battle at Lionheart Reserve on the second day of the match on Saturday.

e game was heading for a close nish, with the Roosters unsteady at 6-56 in response to the Lakers’ modest 142, before it all came to a screeching halt.

e match was suddenly abandoned and will now be played out at the VTCA tribunal.

e o cial result on the VTCA website, pending a tribunal hearing, awarded the victory to the Lakers on forfeit.

But there’s more to be played out in the coming days.

Roosters playing president Darren Wainwright was tight-lipped about what transpired in the top-of-the-table clash, but con rmed his club would protest.

“No comment about the game,” he said. “We’ll be putting in a protest about the state of the ground and I’d prefer to leave it at that”.

Wainwright was talking from a local hospital, where one of his players was getting treatment a er being hit in the head by a bouncer from a Lakers bowler.

Lakers coach Adam Brodie said the pitch

conditions were the same for both sides across the two Saturdays.

He said the ball that hit the Roosters batsman was not malicious and simply a case of misjudgment by the batsman.

“It was a short ball and he missed it,” Brodie said. “He tried to hook, he wasn’t wearing a helmet, he missed and it hit him in the face.”

Amid the Roosters’ concerns over the state of the pitch, Brodie o ered for the Lakers to use slow bowlers for the rest of the game, which, he says, was initially agreed on.

“We were at a stage where we were going to bowl slow bowlers, same as the bad light rule type of thing,” he said.

“Both captains agreed to that and then the

president of Altona Roosters came onto the ground and pulled his team o .”

Asked if he would have been content for his players to bat on the Lionheart pitch, Brodie said: “Yes. I was the same last week”.

Brodie con rmed his side would ght to have the result preserved in his team’s favour.

It will be a crucial decision at the tribunal as it will have implications on both clubs’ ladder positions ahead of the nals.

“We were basically playing for a home nal,” Brodie said.

“ at’s why we’ve protested the result and the VTCA will have some sort of hearing and we’ll get to state our case.” \

Lightning set fortitle shot againNetball

VU-Western Lightning will be forced to implement a new-look goal strategy for the third year running but coach Matt Hills has otherwise retained the bulk of the squad that went deep into the Victorian Netball League nals over the past two seasons.

Hills is optimistic the Lightning can sustain the levels which saw it reach the grand nal in 2012 and get within a game of the big dance last season, despite the big losses of front end stars Erin McCarthy (travelling overseas) and Megan Fitzpatrick (injured).

“Our premiership window is well and truly open,” he told the Weekly. “We’ve gone out with a plan of adding to our team to ensure we can stay at the top of the tree.”

e cornerstone of Lightning’s new-look o ence is young recruit Kate ompson.

ompson is raw but talented, having been part of the AIS set-up and representing Australia at under-21 level.

Filling the void le by national league talent McCarthy and Fitzpatrick, out for 12 months with a knee injury, will be no mean feat but ompson has impressed over the summer.

“We’ve had to introduce a couple of new players and we’ll have a new front end again for the third year running,” Hills said.

“Kate’s a tall goaler, only 22 this year so she ts into our young group.

“She’s added into our front end really well.”

Lightning has welcomed back mid-courter Danni Stewart a er two years away.

Stewart was part of the City West Falcons back-to-back titles but o en found it hard to get a starting role.

“She needed a change of scenery and a new challenge,” Hills said.

Lightning’s defensive unit is recognised as one of the VNL’s best and the only question mark has been depth in the event of injury.

at problem will be solved with the inclusion of Sanonu Robertson, from Geelong Cougars.

“We’ve kept our core defensive end, which has arguably been the best defensive end in the competition for the last couple of years,” Hills said. “We certainly needed another defender because we haven’t had that back-up defender.”

Lightning will meet City West Falcons in Wednesday’s blockbuster opening night at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

e western suburbs rivalry is growing by the year.

“If you look at the margins over the last three years, there’s been only one game where the margin has been a blow-out. Every other game has been close,” Hills said.

“In our two games last year, we beat them by three and they beat us by one, so it’s a really hard-fought battle and both teams have a great deal of respect for each other.” \

Cairnlea Soccer Club o cials are working around the clock to deliver the best 2014 Brimbank Cup experience they can.

It will be the biggest event in the club’s history when 33 teams converge on Cairnlea Park from February 14-16 for the round- robin tournament.

Reds president Yagiz Adal told the Weekly it was an honour for his club to host the growing annual event, which rotates around clubs.

“It’s controlled excitement,” he said with a laugh that suggested the tournament was a massive operation.

“We’re very pleased to be hosting it this year.

“I have a good team of people around me and we’re building up to it slowly but surely.”

Cairnlea will be the centre of the Brimbank sporting community for three days.

is is a priceless opportunity for the Reds to open their doors to locals and promote the club and the game.

“It will showcase the club and, hopefully, attract the locals from the area,” Adal said.

e Cairnlea Cup will bring together the multi-cultural Brimbank community, with more than 20 nations represented, either through established Football Federation Victoria clubs or social groups that have put a team together for the one-o event.

Brimbank City Council representative Kate George has played a massive role

in uniting the community for this event.

“She’s the driving force,” Adal said.

“She’s the one bringing the communities together, organising

the meetings and hosting the meetings.

“She’s been tremendous.”It will be a massive undertaking for

organisers to get the event to run like clockwork, with 46 matches played on the Saturday alone.

e tournament will kick o under lights on the Friday night and the men’s and women’s nals will be played on Sunday.

An exhibition game between a Victorian Police XI and a World XI will take place at noon on the Saturday. \
