PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Term 1, Week 9
Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
I often find myself asking, where did the term go and in general, where does time go. I know that many of you feel the sameway. I know that being an adult in the world and society todaybrings with it many pressures that generations past have notneeded to manage. Being a parent as well complicates thingsexponentially.
A growing issue of consternation, misinformation, confusionand general opportunities and threats that the use of ICT’spresents in general, for what purpose and how often is it usedand specifically, and what does it do to growing minds andbodies is worth thinking about. I ask that we all reflect onwhat could be termed developmentally appropriate technologyand communication and how we, as the adult models, helpkids manage and use these potentially, great learning toolsappropriately and find the balance between learning andplaying.
Some of the work has been done for us by the classification andcensorship boards in Australia and it is often very helpful whenasked the question by your child, “ Can you help me download………………”
A few examples:
I have selected a couple of well-known games andcommunication platforms as an example to point out someconsiderations such as:
RECOMMENDATIONS
To promote child health and development in a digital world, physicians and other health care providers should counselparents and caregivers of young children on the appropriateuse of screen time. Specific recommendations include thefollowing:
Minimize screen time:
• Facebook, Instagram and other communicationplatforms are illegal to use if you are under the age of13
• Games such as Minecraft (PG) Roblox (G) andFortnite (M)
1. The general maturity of students at various ages –The ability of a child to differentiate between fantasyand reality is around 8 years
2. Some may require supervision (in other words playwith the child)
3. Advertising pressures placed on children throughalgorithms.
• Screen time for children younger than 2 years is notrecommended.
• For children 2 to 5 years, limit routine or regularscreen time to less than 1 hour per day.
• Ensure that sedentary screen time is not a routinepart of child care for children younger than 5 years.
• Maintain daily ‘screen-free’ times, especially for familymeals and book-sharing.
• Avoid screens for at least 1 hour before bedtime, given the potential for melatonin-suppressing effects.
• Set timers or use timing apps as busy parents oftenget distracted and children spend longer on thescreen than intended.
Mitigate (reduce) the risks associated withscreen time:
As a family, be mindful about the use of screentime:
Adults should model healthy screen use:

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ NEWS
I am powerful: Teaching our students about thepower of their brain
This term, we have had a focus on teaching our students aboutthe power of their brain, and the power that each child has tomake a difference in the lives of each other. Our Buzz Lessons, with a focus on acknowledging differences, were developedspecifically to provide positive ways for children to supporteach other to feel safe, valued and accepted, and linked toAnti-Bullying Day in week 7 and Harmony Day in week 8.
Using a simple hand model to demonstrate the connectionbetween the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex (based on‘Minding the Brain’ by Daniel Siegel, M.D.), we discussed thepower of our brain and the way it controls our thoughts andfeelings and works to keep us safe.
This is important to understand because the part of the brainactivated to help us survive is different from the part of the brainactivated when we’re calm. Children can only learn properlywhen the calm part of their brain is activated. When we areoverwhelmed by big emotions, sometimes referred to as“flipping our lid” and the amygdala is in control, we move intosurvival mode which presents in a few different ways.
This clip was shared with our students:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xeDcPBD5Fk
When you feel safe and calm, your thinking brain is activatedand you can learn properly. When you feel under attack, yoursurvival state takes over from your calm brain and you struggleto learn.
We discussed these three main survival modes – fight, flightand freeze – and talked about what is happening in the brainand in the body during each mode.
• Be present and engaged when screens are usedand, whenever possible, co-view with children.
• Be aware of content and prioritize educational,age-appropriate and interactive programming.
• Use parenting strategies that teach self-regulation,calming and limit-setting.
• Conduct a self-assessment of current screen habitsand develop a family media plan for when, how andwhere screens may (and may not) be used.
• Help children recognize and question advertisingmessages, stereotyping and other problematiccontent.
• Remember: too much screen time means lostopportunities for teaching and learning.
• Be reassured that there is no evidence to supportintroducing technology at an early age.
• Choose healthy alternatives, such as reading, outdoor play and creative, hands-on activities.
• Turn off their devices at home during family time.
• Turn off screens when not in use and avoidbackground TV.
1. What kind of screens are in your home (e.g., TV,tablet, computer, smartphone)? Which does yourchild use?
2. Is watching TV or programs/movies on other devicesa shared family activity and a common way to relax? How often is a screen on in the background althoughno one is really watching?
3. Does anyone in the family use screens duringmealtimes?
4. What do you watch with your child? What does yourchild watch alone?
5. Do you encourage or discourage conversation withyour child while you are using screens?
6. Do you ever watch adult/commercial programmingwith your child?
7. Does your child use screens while you do choresaround the home? Often? Sometimes?
8. Are there any screen-based activities in your child’sday care program? Do you know how much theseare used?
9. Does your child use any kind of screen beforebedtime? How long before bedtime? Is there a TV or
computer in your child’s bedroom? Does your childtake mobile devices into the bedroom?
10. Does your family have rules or guidelines for screenuse that everyone understands and shares?
2
Each class were then asked to talk about ways to help eachother if they ever find themselves in one of these states. (Thiswork is based on teaching resources provided to schools byInner World Work, developed in collaboration with BeaconHouse Therapeutic Services & Trauma Team.)
We also listened to one of our own students, Chloe B, whowrote this special message for the whole school. A few weeksago, she chose to deliver a similar verbal message to her classwhen she witnessed harassment of a classmate. She updatedher message to share with all of the children at Bli Bli StateSchool.
https://youtu.be/ll-ZiiaISd4
Following Chloe’s example, all children were invited to write acommitment statement or story or drawing showing how theywill act to develop relationships where people feel safe, valuedand accepted.
We hope to share some of these inspiring pieces with you overthe next month.
