Prep – Chambers Island Excursion

On 23 and 24 July our five wonderful Prep classes ventured outfor their first ever school excursion. Each class was involved in avariety of outdoor lessons at Chambers Island in the MaroochyRiver. Like the bus trip wasn’t exciting enough, the walk acrossthe pedestrian bridge from Bradman Avenue was a chance tosee many fish passing underneath in the crystal clear waters. The classes were blessed with magnificent weather as theyworked with their own teacher, teacher aide and the staff of theSunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre.

Activities focused on the Island’s ecology and water life, observing a variety of crabs, pumping for yabbies and evennetting for fish. There were discussions around the indigenousculture of the area and how Chambers Island got its name.

Thanks to our wonderful staff, the staff of the SCEEC and to themany family volunteers who attended to assist with organisationand safety. What a rich experience and an exciting opportunity.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE

OSHC Happenings

Recently Rachel and I attended a Sensory Autism Workshopwith Nelle Frances, an amazing woman who has such a greatknowledge and a passion for Autism.

We were lucky enough to meet Sam (Nelle's son with ASD) andto hear about their journey, which is truly inspiring. We walkedaway from this PD with an enhanced knowledge, a greaterunderstanding and respect on Autism. Our goal is to implementsome of the tools we learnt in our everyday practice at theservice and to continue to enhance our knowledge. We feltinspired by this workshop and developed a passion to continueto share this knowledge with our community and to supportour families in their journey with Autism. We highly recommendNelle Frances as a source of great knowledge and support forfamilies. Her website is:

YEAR 3 – TECHNOLOGY

Juiced Up Groms

Last term we were learning about food technology and whathas changed over the last 150 years.

Students explored food technology by planning and preparingthe making of a pizza in the school kitchen, and evaluatingthe cooking through tasting. Then finalising the analysis of thisprocess by examining the sustainability of the foods used in thepreparation of this pizza.

To develop a deeper understanding of food technology wewere privileged to have in Week 9 the expertise of Harry B’sdad and uncle, Cam and Chris from Juiced up Groms, comeand help us explore the same technology process but makingsmoothies. They first presented an entertaining and interactivepresentation highlighting the need for healthy eating and activeliving for kids. The students had so much fun learning abouthealthy foods and what is best for their bodies. Thepresentation finished with the making and tasting of awholefood smoothie, which heard the students claim was "thebest smoothie ever".

Students were convinced smoothies should be sold from thetuckshop every day (not just Wednesday) to help them behealthy. To attempt to persuade our school tuckshop makethis change 3R wrote to the Tuckshop. We wonder what MissLeanne, our amazing tuckshop manager, might say. See someexamples of great persuasive letters:

The tuckshop gave 3R good news that smoothies are availableat the tuckshop every Wednesday. So then the studentspromptly wrote to their parents asking for $3.50 to buySmoothies. We wonder if the persuasive words made a hugeimpact on learning as the class predicted.

A Sunday Wish

One Sunday afternoon Luca had a wish. He triedand tried to make a wish but it didn’t work. He hadto throw it out. One Sunday he found it in a forestwith this friend. He granted one for both of them. That wish was to be a flying human for ever and itto never end for them both.

They flew into space and back. They came up withan idea to race to space and back to Earth. Lucawas so glad he still had the wish and the fact thatyou can share a wish that probably wouldn’t begranted. They were super duper lucky.

They found Alix and the pirates tied her up! “Help!” Harryhid behind the beautiful tree. Alix gave Harry the dragronshe had wished for. When the pirates had gone of course.Alix was so friendly to do that. Harry told the dragon to setAlix free and burn those ugly pirates. No one ever wentthere again.

My Favourite Cinderella

You’ve got to believe me that Cinderella is the bestcharacter. Interstellar Cinderella and Cinderella both lostsomething in the stories. Cinderella is different toInterstellar Cinderella because she has dainty feet.

Cinderella reminds me of Mum because she has thesame hair. Cinderella works really hard like doing thewashing like Mum. She’s also pretty in her silver dress likeMum.

In my opinion Cinderella is the best character out of bothof them.

Eisteddfod Success

On Wednesday 7 August, the Rebel Clef Boys and the BelleVoce Girls small vocal groups competed at the Sunshine CoastJunior Eisteddfod. The girls sang 'Firefly' and the boys sang'Caught In A Computer Game'. Both groups sang their bestand the Belle Voce girls received 1st place for theirperformance. The comments from the adjudicator werefantastic. She loved our all boys groups and their energeticperformance. She thought the girls harmonies and expressivesinging were outstanding.

On Sunday 11 August, Brooke N and Lucy A, Georgia L andMia L, Amber C and Mia H, Ashanti B and Ruby C competed inthe duet section at the Eisteddfod. This is a very tough sectionand the first time we have had duets entered. It can be verydaunting with just two singers on a big stage with just theiraccompanist. The girls sang really well in a field of 14 duetsentered. Brooke and Lucy were awarded a Highly Commendedfor their performance. Well done.

They were followed by our Belle Voce girls singing 'MrMistoffolees' and our Rebel Clef boys singing 'Seize the Day'in the Small Vocal Musical Theatre section. In this section, they were required to dress in costume and act out the songand both groups put 100% into their performances. Out ofthe 9 groups entered, the Belle Voce girls placed HighlyCommended.

The Rebel Clef boys and Belle Voce girls have beenamazing ambassadors for our school. In every section theyhave entered, they have been the only state school. Theirperformances have been outstanding, their behaviour excellentand their interactions and encouragement of the other schoolspositive. Congratulations to all those involved.
