5 Stage process: Precontemplative, contemplative, preparation, action and maintenance.

Why Do We Need To Understand Behaviour Change?Can impact our clients in several ways:Trying something new, e.g going to the gym for the

first time

Losing motivation

Relapse or dropping out

Clients want to change but don't know how

Will effect all clients we work with

5 Stage Model of Behaviour Changes

How To Apply The ModelPrecontemplative: Encourage self reflection, mainly with GP referrals

Contemplative: Can be first stage you see client. Let them know decision is theirs

Preparation: Encourage small steps with clients to overcome barriers

Action: Have support structures ready to prevent “Snakes and Ladders”

Maintenance: Maintaining focus on end goals. “Hard part has been done”.
