Press Release Australian Chapter of Telangana Development Forum (TDF-USA) www.telangana.org Bathukamma and Telangana Liberation Day in Sydney, Australia Sydney New South Wales Australia September 17th, 2006 Telangana people living in and around Sydney celebrated Bathukamma and Telangana Liberation Day. The event was organized by Australian chapter of Telangana Development Forum-USA. About 45 families and 10 students (singles) attended the event with high enthusiasm and interest. People of all ages participated in the event. Total number was 115 including 10 people from Andhra region. The day started at 1:45pm with organisers of the event arriving at the most famous scenic spot in Sydney. Meadowbank Park is on the banks of the river Parramatta, other side of the Olympics 2000 Park. Many people arrived by 3pm. Organisers welcomed all the guests and everyone introduced himself or herself. People discussed the current issues of the ‘Telangana motherland’ and scrolling down the past 50 years of historical events and suppression of Telangana people by various post 1956 governments. Ignorant Telangana people realised the need for a separate state of Telangana. Telangana state demand is not a sentiment indeed it is a scientific and evidence based demand. All most all families have signed a petition demanding a Telangana State addressed to Honourable Prime Minister of India and copied to 1. President, Republic of India 2. Press Release in India Organisers explained the importance of Sept 17 1948, the day Telangana people got its freedom, not the August 15, 1947 which is the day the rest of India got independence. Telangana was still fighting against Nizam’s cruel dictatorship even after India got freedom from British on August 15th 1947. Many Telangana people sacrificed their lives to get their freedom from the oppressive rule of Nizam. It is important not only to remember the day as a historical record when Telangana got its freedom but also to remember all those who lost their lives fighting for Telangana freedom. Preparation of Bathukamma started at 3pm with locally available flowers. Telangana purohit Sriman Hari performed Gauri Pooja. Women in traditional sarees and children played around the Bathukammas. It was a colourful event dancing around Bathukamma with traditional Bathukamma songs with the tune of "Bathukamma Bathukamma Uyyaalo". The backdrop of tricolour Indian National flag and the Australian Chapter of TDF-USA objectives poster provided a unique experience compared to other Bathukammas that are generally celebrated in motherland Telangana. Finally Bathukamma was taken to the Parramatta river in a colourful procession with mangala aarathi leading the procession and the final round of Bathukamma dance. Bathukamma along with Boddemma (Girl Bathukamma) were flown on the river water, with traditional lamp on them, tuning to the high tides of Parramatta River. Later all participants enjoyed the samosas and the masala chai. Leading Telugu doctors, Dentists and Professionals living in Sydney congratulated the team: Ashwin, Ashok, Devendar, Jayapal , Naresh, Pramod, Ravindar, Raja, Rajashekar, Vinod and Upendar. The vibrations of Bathukamma were gradually transpired in to Telngana waves across Australia and New Zealand. Various people from Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Auckland have started calling the team to congratulate on the successful event. Team in now motivated enough to organise seminars and speaker tours to educate all Indians about Telangana. Telangana Development Forum-USA - Australian chapter is a forum for Non Resident Telangana people living in Australia aiming to educate all Indians about Telangana problems, to strengthen cultural identity of Telangana people by protecting our Telangana culture and language accent and to support the Telangana development and the formation of a separate Telangana State in the Republic of India.
