The front cover of the Digi Pak for Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare album this album was written

in tribute to their drummer who died due to an over dose and so a lot of the albums art work is

about that subject or has some kind of religious symbolism which is why the front cover has a

picture of the grim reaper who is wearing a medieval style stereotypical priest attire but with bat

like wings to reverse the traditional connotations and interpretations of the grim reaper and

associate him with hristianity despite the fact that his e!istence isn't necessarily endorsed by thereligious ideology of hristianity at the same time the skull has become a symbol of the band in

general as a skull with wings is their logo so this ties the subject of the album to the band more

closely as well as making the album more iconic" The main colour scheme is blue and black the

blue to indicate the connotation of sadness as blue is a very mellow colour it also reflects the bands

feelings on the album the black is to provide the typical metal connotations but at the same time

relate back to the subject of the death of their band mate and support the other symbols of that such

as the tomb stone the grim reaper they also put a full moon in the background to let the viewer

instantly know its night but also to add to the eeriness of the album artwork which is reinforced by

the cemetery setting" The person on the front cover ne!t to the grave is to add to the shock factor as

nothing grabs peoples attention #uite like something shocking and also causes the rest of the setting

on the front cover to bear weight as they can put a face to the situation the logo is written in white tobalance the darker connotations with the more appealing connotations of white such as purity which

could speak about the bands intent when creating the album the album name nightmare is written in

a red font under their logo to add red connotations such as blood to counter the binary opposite

white"

The ne!t part of the Digi Pak is a photo of the band members drinking at the bar before the death of

their drummer and ne!t to the image is a drawn interpretations of the image but has been done to

create an almost before and after effect" The lead singer is seen sitting at the head of the table in the

image as well as at the bar to show that he is the leader of the group and this has been done to create

a sense of togetherness $n homage to their lost drummer and that they would meet again in a

different place whilst still maintaining that dark tone on the album by making them skeletons this

has been done as a bonus in the Digi Pak to the fans who are also mourning the loss of the drummer

The ne!t part of the Digi Pak features a message on the back of the packaging to only the people

who bought the Digi Pak it continues with the themes in the other sides of the Digi Pak you see a

close up of a cross continuing with the religious symbolism as well as a close up of the grave from

the front cover which adds to the message the the lead singer has written to the fans the mist is

continued from the front cover to help fit the themes and add to the eeriness the gravestone is

cracked possibly representing the bands feeling about the passing away of the drummer and fitting

the stereotype of a graveyard the mist possibly connoting some form haunting as if he was still their

haunting the album almost"

This is the back of the Digi Pak they have continued with mist effect but combined with the empty

road and the light from the mist connotes moving on to some form of spiritual after life continuing

with the religious symbolism e!cept this one while sombre is clearly a lot more hopeful this is

indicated by the white light as well as the stars that have been added in through places where the

mist has thinned and is the end of the Digi Pak and is where the visuals effectively sign off" The

colour green if featured for the first time connoting life and starting again in the form of over

growing the grave stones still maintaining that sombre feeling but adding again to the hopeful

aspect the writing is in bold and in black to make it stand out against the background and to add its

colour connotations to the rest of the image all of the tracks are listed on the back but at the end of

them all there is a tiny white cross which is a time honoured symbol of religion and the white wouldconnote purity and judging by its placement ne!t to the songs its representing their intent behind the

music"
