Come and grow with us. We are a welcoming and inclusive community of love centered on the Holy Eucharist and helping one another to become a Eucharist to the World.

From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian,
Dear Friends,
At the end of the Civil War when the Confederate Army was finally defeated,
Abraham Lincoln was asked how he would treat the rebellious South. The
question hinted at the desire for severe punishment. But the merciful President
said, “I will treat them as if they had never been away.” Some vindictive
Yankees urged the President to hang the rebel leaders, but Lincoln insisted, “No
we must hang on to them.”
For Jesus, forgiveness is of paramount importance. While Jesus was talking
about forgiveness, Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I
forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered,
“I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!…”
When Peter raised this question regarding forgiveness, he had a couple of Old
Testament incidents in mind. Cain killed his brother, Abel, and then he was cast
out to wander the earth. Yet God puts His seal of protection on both Cain and
Israel; anyone who harms them will be avenged sevenfold by God. Lamech,
another Old Testament figure, said, “If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech
seventy-sevenfold.”
Jesus wrote a New Testament when he said, “Let the one who has never sinned
throw the first stone.” It shows the radical nature of his ethics. It sowed the seed
of a new law to a world that was disfigured by hatred and violence. If we follow
the Old Law of ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ then the world
becomes blind and toothless.
Jesus practiced this supernatural virtue by praying for his enemies. The very first
words that came out from the mouth of Jesus while dying on the cross was not a
word of curse but a beautiful prayer; a prayer not for his friends, not for his
family but for his enemies. It is easier to hate than to forgive. Jesus found a
unique way to forgive. He found a reason to justify his enemies. He appealed to
God for their ignorance.
Forgiveness breaks the chain of hatred. It frees us to celebrate the present. It
makes us a disciple of Jesus. Jesus said, “As I have loved you, so also you must
love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love
one another.”
Do you have enemies? What is your role in creating that situation? Can you find
a reason to forgive?
May God bless you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
ST. FRANCIS XAVIER PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAMS
If you have any questions or need more information, please email Rosie Roope at
[email protected] or visit our parish website at www.sfxburbank.com.
Note: We cannot currently offer Sunday School or Children's Liturgy of the Word due to this pandemic and social distancing guidelines. These programs will resume as soon as possible.
PREPARATION FOR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: For children in the 1st-5th grades attending public or non-Catholic private school. This program presents religious education and sacramental preparation information in a fun and innovative way. Baptized children generally begin their Sacramental Preparation in the first grade, and complete their sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in the 2nd grade. (Note: If your child is older than 3rd grade, baptized but has not yet made their First Holy Communion, we do have a Sacramental Preparation class for them). Classes will begin in October online, then transition to in-person instruction as soon as possible.
CONFIRMATION (for teens): Confirmation is the final Sacrament of Initiation that brings your teen into full communion with the church. St. Francis Xavier follows a two-year preparation process for reception of this sacrament designed to help our young people come to a deeper under-standing of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and in the life of the Church. Boys and girls begin the process anytime in their high school years, although most start as freshmen. Classes will begin in October online,
then transition to in-person instruction as soon as possible.
ADULT CONFIRMATION: If you have already received the sacraments of Baptism and First Holy Communion, but have not yet been Confirmed, we do have an adult Confirmation program beginning early 2021. For more
information, please contact Rosie Roope at [email protected].
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN: If you are interested in becoming baptized in the Catholic Church, or completing your sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation, we have an excellent program for you called "Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults" (RCIA). The St. Francis Xavier parish community invites you meet with members of the RCIA team who welcome your interest and questions regarding the Catholic Church and our parish community.

MASS INTENTIONS Cyberbullying Is Still A Threat With Distance
Learning
This year, with school starting online children of all ages will be interacting with one another via
technology even more than usual. Be on the lookout for signs that bullying is happening via the internet,
texting, various apps, or social media – as challenging as it is, monitor both the amount of time
your children are “plugged in” and the content of what they are doing when interacting with their
peers. Cyberbullying can include the use of apps, texts, photographs, and images that are intended to
hurt, harass, embarrass, or even destroy the reputation of a victim. Unlike at school, you cannot
walk away from cyberbullying — it spreads instantly, 24/7. Children who are cyberbullied may avoid going online or talking to their so-called friends.
They are likely to be sad or angry and may have low self-esteem. For more information on this topic,
visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

SFX SCHOOL
We are still accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. As with other schools in
California, we began the school year remote learning. We have plans for an amazing Catholic
education for our students while we distance learn at home, as well as when we are able to return to in-person instruction. Please call us at 818/504-4400 to get more information or set up a tour. Visit us
at our website: sfxschool.org.
