FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAOwill return next week.

Thank you for a wonderful beginning to the 2020—21 school year. We welcomed many new students to our school family.

Picture Day has been rescheduled to January 13, 2021, in the hopes that we will all be together face–to–face for great pictures.

As an incentive for students to wear masks and maintain social distancing, students may dress down on Fridays.

Parents, we need you to make sure everyone on school property is wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. That includes after we release students to your care at the end of the day. We should not have students playing on school grounds without masks. We need you to model social distancing and mask wearing if you are on school grounds. We are responsible to each other taking care of each other. Following these rules are part of that.

As the year continues, please note that if a child is not feeling well during the school day, these are the symptoms we consider when pursuing next steps.

Since people with COVID–19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2–14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID–19:

• Fever or chills• Cough• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing• Fatigue• Muscle or body aches• Headache• New loss of taste or smell• Sore throat• Congestion or runny nose• Nausea or vomiting• Diarrhea

This list does not include all possible symptoms. CDC will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID–19. This list also includes symptoms of other illnesses, as well.

If a child has a fever or reports two or more of the above symptoms, you will be notified. Per the Archdiocese protocol, the child and his/ her siblings must be picked up.

The child must see a healthcare provider and follow his/ her directions.

If the child tests positive for COVID–19, the school must be notified immediately, so that appropriate actions can follow.

If the child tests negative for COVID–19, the student must be fever free for 24 hours with no fever–reducing medicine. Other symptoms must be improved by 75%. The child must bring a doctor’s note upon his/her return.

Thank you for your attention to these actions which have been designed to keep everyone in the school community safe and healthy.

Sincerely and with gratitude and blessings,Sheila M. Klich, Principal

SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM (c. 344—407)September 13

“Speaking truth to power” may have become just another cliché, but doing precisely that cost John “the Golden Mouth” (Chrysostom) his diocese and, after exile and a forced march, his health and life. “Renowned for eloquence, heroic in suffering” (Sacramentary), John’s scriptural insights still comfort and challenge. Mystical theologian, he bids Eastern Christians, whose principal Divine Liturgy bears his name, to lift up their hearts to “God ineffable, beyond comprehension, invisible, beyond understanding, existing forever, always the same.” Model pastor, he warns Roman Catholics in the Liturgy of the Hours not to neglect God–in–the–flesh: “Would you honor Christ’s body? Do not scorn his nakedness, honoring him here in church with silken robes, while neglecting him cold and naked outside. What use to burden Christ’s altar with golden chalices, while Christ himself starves to death? What use dressing the altar with gold–woven cloths, while denying the shivering Christ the clothes he needs? Do not adorn the church while ignoring your needy brother: he is the most precious temple of all!” (Saturday, Twenty–first Week in Ordinary Time). Peter Scagnelli

FORGIVENESSNearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again.

Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?”

Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord.

Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.

ON RUDENESS, FORGIVENESS, AND SEVENTY––SEVENFOLD

©2020 By John B. Reynolds

([email protected])

Years back, a boss asked a co–worker and me what annoyed us most. The co–worker said she was

most annoyed by hangers that got tangled up in her closet. Based on the boss’s look, I knew he was expecting something heavier, but he didn’t like my response, either.

“Rudeness,” I said. He scoffed at this, in fact, suggesting that given all the wrong in the world––even then––I should be able to come up with something better. Or worse, I guess. I argued thatrudeness covers a lot of ground. I didn’t think of it at the time, but Merton onceobserved that all sin is rooted in the failure of love. In retrospect, I rest my case.

And perhaps it’s just me, but seems we’re seeing a failure of love atevery turn these days. After hearing of another shooting, or another peacefulprotest–turned–

violent, or another masked/unmasked confrontation, I asked mywife, “So…is the world going to hell in a handbasket?” I wonder sometimes.

Not long after I retired, I began praying a daily rosary. I can’t speak for others, but the practice means much to me. I ask God for a lot of small things everyday, but when I’m on the beads, I ask Mary’s intercession on two big things: peace, and life. Less than a (pandemic) year in, I don’t think it’s working. Yet.

But enter forgiveness, perhaps, which puts bringing more love, peace, and life into the world directly on us. I’m talking forgiveness like Sirach is talking forgiveness in the first reading: “Forgive your neighbor’s injustice, then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the Lord?”

Pretty simple. And prettyprofound in that it sounds a lot

like those really scary words from the “Our Father,” the words we say at Mass each Sunday (and I say several times a day on the beads): “Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us…” Scary. Really.

Which leads us to Jesus’s lesson on forgiveness in today’s Gospel. Peteris probably proud of himself when he opens the conversation with “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?”(my emphasis). Jesus paints a different picture, though (“I say to you, not seven times but seventy–seven times”). He then tells the parable of the king whoforgives his servant’s huge––as in, unpayable––debt when the servant asks for mercy, only to learn that this same servant does not subsequently forgive a fellow servant’s trifling debt, which brings the unforgiving servant to a badend. Jesus’s “seventy–seven times” response is interesting in

the context of something from Genesis, with Cain’s descendant Lamech stating, “If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy–sevenfold.” While he boasts of limitless vengeance, Jesus calls for equally limitless forgiveness. Since mercyand love walk together, perhaps we’d all find less annoyance in our world were we quicker to forgive. Even rudeness (note to self). In all of its manifestations.

SHRINES

Recently our Facebook followers were invited to share pictures of their outside shrines to Mary. If you would like to be a part of this, please send your pictures with a short explanation of why you have the shrine to [email protected] for inclusion in future bulletins, Facebook, or the website. See last week’s bulletin for more pictures. Thanks!

From Fr. Paul Cao (picture above left) This is the shrine that my parents have in front of their house.

Silvia Hagerty and her sons, Patrick and Max planted a garden in memory of their dad around a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe that he had set up. On the first anniversary of his death they sent notes to him attached to helium balloons with lights inside them that were supposed to keep the balloons lit up for a couple hours. One of the balloons popped and the light landed on the statue of Our Lady and remained lit for six weeks. (Picture above right).

From Marie Morgan (pictured on left) This is my shrine to Mother Mary.

RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Many people are searching for spiritual meaning and a deeper relationship with God. Often they feel drawn to the Catholic faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process by which adults explore the Catholic faith and ordinarily become members of the Church.

The program consists of several months of instruction in the teachings, beliefs, customs, and practices of the Catholic faith. Those who complete the process receive the sacraments, usually Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation, or a combination of those, at Easter.

WHO IS THE RCIA INTENDED FOR?· Adults and Teens who have never been baptized.· Adults and Teens who have been baptized in another Christian denomination.· Adults and Teens who were baptized Catholic, but never received First Communion or Confirmation.

Adult Classes meet on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 PM in the St. Cyprian Rectory. The program begins in October and concludes on Easter Sunday.

Teen Classes meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 PM in the St. Cyprian Rectory. The program starts in October and concludes on Easter Sunday.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATE

“In the same way, all of us, though there are so many of us, make up one body in Christ, and as different parts we are all joined to one another. Romans 12:5

The St. Mother Theodore Guerin Religious Education Department appreciates the dedication our famiies have in raising children within the Catholic faith. Our relationship with Jesus Christ and our faith community guides us in many ways. During this challenging time in our world—the pandemic—we need to focus on deepening our relationship with Christ and with each other.

So that we can be a stronger faith community in a safe environment, we will combine the two locations where our Religious Education classes had met into one location. Effective with the 2020—2021 Religious Education school year, classes will be held on Saturdays once a month at St. Celestine School, Elmwood Park. Grades 1—8 will be offered and each monthly class session will be from 9:30—11 AM. Home/remote Religious Education will take place on the weeks we do not have in–person class. Each student will be provided a book, Finding God, from Loyola Press. Chapter worksheets will be given to the students to complete for the next month’s session. Also, there are short online chapter quizzes that the students will be asked to complete. We will provide parents with Study Guides for each chapter so you can review the concepts with your child. Additional information will be provided when the program begins.

St. Celestine School is equipped with classrooms that are in adherence with the safety guidelines required by the Archdiocese of Chicago and the State of Illinois. The Archdiocese is also providing the Religious Education Departments in all parishes with guidelines regarding the students' safety and curriculum. Temperature checks, wearing masks and maintaining social distance will be done. The Archdiocese is advising that Religious Education programs should wait until October to begin. Our first class will be Saturday, October 17. Registration will begin soon.

YOU MUST SIGN UP TO ATTEND MASS

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires that anyone attending Sunday Mass register in advance online. The privilege to reopen for Mass is offered with a limit to the maximum number of people who can be in the churches at one time. We must maintain records for the Illinois Department of Public Health of all who enter our churches for contact tracing when a confirmed case of COVID–19 is identified. You may sign up for the weekend Masses and can access the link to SignUp Genius on the website and through our Facebook page. Daily Mass, which takes place on Tuesdays at 8 AM at St. Cyprian and Wednesdays at 8 AM at St. Celestine, and Reconciliation, which takes place most Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine (check the website first), does not require a reservation; someone will take your information at church for daily Mass.

Remember the requirement to attend Sunday Mass has been lifted and we will still stream the 10:30 AM Mass live on Facebook and the website. If you are not feeling well, are over 65 or compromised medically, we encourage you to participate by watching Mass on TV or online. We want everyone to be safe!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDWe need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. If you are from high school age to under 65 and are healthy with no underlying health conditions, please consider assisting with funerals, baptisms, weddings, reconciliation, and daily or Sunday Masses.

Funerals are held Monday through Saturday at both churches, usually at 10 AM and noon.

Weddings are held on Saturday afternoons in both churches.

Baptisms are held on Saturdays and Sundays in both churches, usually at noon and 1 PM.

Reconciliation takes place on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine.

There is an 8 AM Tuesday Mass at St. Cyprian and 8 AM Wednesday Mass at St. Celestine.

We are limited to 125 people at St. Celestine and 50 at St. Cyprian to allow for social distancing.

Volunteers may be needed to set up, greet, check off attendees, manage the flow of congregants, direct people to seating, usher, clean, and sanitize the worship space. You must wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing.

All volunteers must understand that even with precautions, we cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to Covid–19. All volunteers must attend a training. Please submit the Online Form to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer, and the days of the week and times of the day that are best for you. This is a massive undertaking and many hands make light work. Find the sign up on the website. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
