Current situation

• No standardization exists today for managing software products across the Mainframe platform

• Mainframe expertise is diminishing

New cross-vendor platform standard for managing Mainframe software

• All Mainframe products from all Mainframe vendors to be acquired, deployed, configured, maintained and upgraded in a consistent way

Acquisition of Maintenance

• BEST PRACTICE is to use SMP/E Receive Order

– Broadcom, IBM and Compuware support Receive Order

• SMP/E Receive command will

– Build custom package of missing PTFs

– Download PTFs to your SMPNTS USS directory

– Receive PTFs into Global Zone

• Benefits of Using Receive Order

– Order PTFs, APARs, Critical, Recommended, ALL or just HOLDDATA

– Use Job scheduler to automate acquisition on a regular cadence

Following Installation, Maintenance is the next logical step for standardization:

• Provide dialog-driven PTF installation for SMP/E service as an additional function, named

Software Update, within Software Management in z/OSMF

Why?

• Quickly extends the maintenance benefits available in CA CSM to a wider audience

• Offers fresh impetus to simplifying z/OS software maintenance

• Provides a foundation from which IBM and other vendors can opt to provide further

improvements to the installation process of SMP/E PTFs

• Corrective Service

– Install a software update to fix a problem

• Recommended Service

– Install vendor-recommended software updates

• Functional Service

– Install software updates that provide support for new hardware, software or function

Provide UI for dialog-driven PTF installation initially and, if there is demand, REST APIs to enable

automation.

In the short to medium term, CA CSM 6.0 will continue to be supported during the transition to the

new standard. It is in a support mode only and is not being enhanced with new features.

Once the key elements are in place and accessible to our customer base, namely acquisition,

installation, configuration and maintenance, Broadcom will end support for CA CSM.

As per Broadcom policy, CA CSM 6.0 end of support will be announced 12 months before it

becomes effective.
