AUGUST 28, 2016 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reecting on God’s Word The story is told of a priest who was a brilliant scholar and an extraordinary lecturer. His one concern in life was the position he would hold at God’s eternal banquet. One night, in a dream, an angel revealed that he should expect to be seated next to the butcher from Regenberg. The priest was aghast. Surely a mistake, he thought. He de- cided to set out for Regenberg to see the man who would be his companion for eternity. As he traveled, he thought to himself that perhaps this butcher was really a man of great distinction who had fallen on hard times and was temporarily forced to cut meat for a living. With that thought, he tried to console himself. In Regenberg, the priest found the butcher work- ing quietly at his trade. He asked him if he had been a butcher all his life. The butcher replied, “Yes, I have, my good man, but I’m a second-rate butcher. You see, I have not had much time to devote to my trade. I have two el- derly parents and they are very helpless in the daily tasks of life. As a result, much of my time is consumed in their care. Every day I must bathe them, clothe them, and feed them. And there’s the cleaning and washing of clothes.” The priest, with tears in his eyes, knelt down, kissed the rough hands of the butcher, and thanked God for giving him a place in heaven next to a man of such great distinction. —Rev. Dear Parishioners In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear two related parables dealing with banquets, invited guests, and places of honor. The details include the fact

that Jesus was the invited guest at the home of an important religious leader and that people were observing him carefully. The setting for this dinner, we are told, is the Sabbath day, a day filled with specific expectations, rituals and prayers. It is compelling to me that the scriptures reveal that Jesus found himself in trouble with the religious leaders numerous times on the Sabbath. Perhaps the notion of Sabbath time seems irrele-vant to many in our day, yet it is something that I believe we need to rediscover. Many of our lives seem to spiral out of con-trol and times with so many activities and things that we are responsible for. The purpose of the Sabbath is most clearly articulated in the story of creation: “God rested on the seventh day from all the work he had done.” The Sabbath then was a day for rest and reflection. The Sabbath is a time when we take the time to thank God for all the blessings we know and dedi-cate some time to praise and honor God. The Sabbath always involves gathering at table with family and friends. This is why Jesus chose the Passover meal as a way for us to remember him. I am personally grateful for all who serve the Sunday lit-urgy which for us is our Sabbath. Just as a Sabbath meal needs to be prepared in advance, so does our weekly celebration of the Eucharist. I offer the following suggestions for preparing for get the most out of Sunday Mass. 1. Make the commitment to go every Sunday. Decide ahead

of time what Mass you can attend and put it in your sched-ule. I have a friend who puts an hour for God in her ap-pointment book. When you attend Mass weekly you will find yourself feeling more and more at home. You truly become part of the community.

2. Consider reading the scriptures ahead of time so that when you hear them proclaimed out loud you will have a deeper understanding of what is being proclaimed.

3. Take some time in prayer to reflect on the past week and give thanks for all the good things and ask for mercy for any time when sin took over your thoughts, words or deeds.

4. Ask God to speak to you during Mass. Ask God to open your heart to hear what you need to hear.

5. Start a prayer journal and write down what God has said to you during Mass. Perhaps even discuss with other family members what stirred in you or what spoke to you. Blessed are those who are invited to the supper of the lamb.

St. Mary Prayer Angels As members of St. Mary's parish faith community, it is our responsibility to re-member in spiritual ways those among us who are ill in mind, body, or spirit. We

have a ministry under Human Concerns called “St. Mary’s Prayer An-gels” ministry. This ministry is for anyone who has regular access to their email and agrees to pray for the intentions and needs of our par-ish community as they arise. How it works: If you are in need of urgent prayers for yourself or a family member,

you simply email your request to Diane Mulroe [email protected] and then your request will be added to the next outgoing Prayer Angels email.

If you would like to be a praying member of the Prayer Angels Minis-try, you subscribe to receive emails. Once you are subscribed, you will periodically receive an email with the names of those who are in need of urgent prayers as well as the names of our beloved deceased. As a member of the ministry, you agree to pray for those in need of our love and support.

Permission must be given by either the individual or a family member to add the prayer request to the Prayer Angels email. All prayers that parishioners entrust to us are confidential to the St. Mary Prayer An-gels only and are not to be forwarded or posted on any form of social network. If you would like to join this ministry, please visit the wel-come page on the St. Mary of the Annunciation website http://www.stmaryfc.org/#/welcome and click on the graphic “Click here to join the parish email lists” or email Diane Mulroe and you will be added to the subscription and email distribution for St. Mary Prayer Angels.

Annual Catholic Appeal Update We continue to receive good news about the results of the 2016 Annu-al Catholic Appeal! The most recent update from the Archdiocese shows that so far 535 parishioners have pledged $199,336, of which $180,829 has already been paid! We are very grateful for the terrific response of our generous parishioners! If you have not yet made a pledge, you may still do so in the Parish Office or from the Steward-ship tab on our parish web site. The Appeal is a large and critical source of funding for the Archdiocese and the parish. All money received that exceeds our par-ish goal of $77,229 is returned to St. Mary. As in previous years, this “rebate” is a very important source of funding for the functioning of our parish and its ministries. The Appeal rebate also helps us to address critical big ticket items and emergency repairs that are outside the scope of our normal budget. For example, proceeds from the 2015 Appeal helped us to repair our two campus water wells and the air conditioning in Diantha Hall. St. Mary also directly benefits from Arch-diocesan programs for Catholic Schools, Religious Education, Youth Ministry, and Lay Ministry Formation (among others) that are support-ed by gifts to the Annual Appeal. We thank everyone for your generous pledges and pay-ments to the Appeal. We are very grateful for all those who sacrifice to support the Archdiocese and St. Mary of the Annunciation!

Worship Commission Ministry Fair September 17 & 18

How will you share your gift with the parish?

Altar Servers Open to young parishioners in 4th through 12th grades. These young people develop initiative and forethought by assisting the priest and deacon at Mass. Greeters and Ushers A personal welcome helps engage a worshiper. Ushers and Greeters assist where needed, from helping to find seats, taking up the offertory collection, to giving emergency assistance. Eucharistic Ministers Teens and adults are trained and mandated by the Archdiocese to act as extraordinary ministers of Communion. Lectors Teens and adults are trained for the proclamation of the Word. Sacristans The many articles required for the celebration of the sacraments are the area of sacristans, from candles and cups to vesture and linens. Music Ministry Helping the assembly sing God’s praises, as well as exercising their own particular role in the sacred liturgy, is the goal of music ministers. Along with the Contemporary Choir and the Parish Choir, we would like to organize a funeral choir and a children’s choir. Eucharistic Adoration The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration one day each month. Adorers as well as additional coordinators are sought. Wedding Coordinators These persons assist the brides, grooms, attendants, and their fami-lies with the details associated with the wedding liturgy both in the planning and on the day of the wedding. Rosary and Divine Mercy Ministry These dedicated persons recite the Rosary after daily Mass Monday through Thursday, and the Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet on Fridays immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. The Family Rosary is recited every first Saturday of the month at 4:30 PM. Simbang Gabi St. Mary’s is the site of one of the nine Lake County area novena Masses in preparation for Christmas. Along with a festive celebration of the Eucharist, a reception with food and fellowship is offered. Call-Me Ministry Even though you may have the desire, you may not have the ability to regularly commit to a ministry. Call-Me ministers share their contact information with ministries in which they have an interest. When extra help is needed, ministry coordinators give these ministers a call.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Today’s Gospel passage challenges us to take an honest look in the mirror and honestly consider how self-focused and self-

important we are. And how much we yearn for recognition and compliments from others. The more infatuated we are with our-selves, the less capable we are of being generous and compas-sionate to others. Consider the following story told by Sr. Alice Camille, a noted author, speaker and scripture scholar:

Once when I was giving a parish mission in a wealthy suburb, the pastor arranged lodgings for me with a humble family on the outskirts of town. While glad to meet this remarkable family, I was intrigued by the context in a very well-heeled community. As the pastor explained: “At the close of the mission, I want you to acknowledge the hospitality of this family. They are the poorest in our parish, yet they were the only ones who approached me to ask if they could host you during the mission.” How frequently this story is repeated across the church! Rarely is gen-erosity offered in proportion to possessions. Instead, the most gener-ous are often those with fewer resources. We give, not according to our means, but in response to our gratitude. Too often, the more we have, the more we credit ourselves with our hard work and resource-fulness. Where would you and I appear in Alice’s episode? Where would we appear in today’s Gospel story? Each of us is called to humility. Humility is not poor self-esteem nor does it not mean habitually downplaying anything good you’ve done (“It wasn’t really all that much”). In some cases such false self-deprecation can be pride, not humility, at work. Rather, in the words of C.S. Lewis, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” Only when we recognize and respect and honor the innate value of others can we truly love and serve. Humility starts with the recognition that before God we humans are only mere creatures (something that in traditional language is a virtue called “fear of the Lord”) and that all we have is ultimately a gift from the Creator. Only when you and I recognize that we are blessed with far more than we deserve can we be truly generous. And we are only genuinely gener-ous when we give without regards to obligation, either one we’re under or one we’re attempting to create for the recipient. If we desire any type of reciprocity, we’re not acting out of sincere generosity. Likewise, if it’s recognition and compliments we’re after, we’re not truly humble. Benjamin Franklin wrote in his autobiography, “I cannot boast of much success in acquiring the reality of this virtue [humility], but I had a good deal with regard to the appearance of it.” Perhaps working at appearances is not a bad place to start, if the idea isn’t to deceive others but rather to consciously act ourselves into a new way of being. If we cultivate the practice of humble words and actions in our lives – by focusing our attention, conversation and behavior on others and their needs rather than on ourselves and our desires – you and I can gradually develop the ever more humble and generous hearts of true disciples. We live in an age that seems to celebrate “It’s all about me!” As today’s Gospel reveals, Jesus begs to differ. I don’t know about you, but I’ve got some work to do... If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

ACDVO Needs to Hear from You The Archdiocesan Committee on Domestic Violence Outreach is working with Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Re-search & Learning (CURL), the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law and the Chicago Foundation for Women to re-search how public K-12 Illinois schools respond to the needs of stu-dent survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. The project will be used to improve Illinois state policy. We need stories from student survivors, parents, and school staff about their experiences. This valuable input will help shape policy to ensure all schools meet the needs of youth survivors. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Interviews can be conduct-ed by phone or in-person and a cash stipend is paid to survivors for participating. If you would like to share your story, or if you would like more information, please contact Jennifer Cossyleon at 773-508-8502, [email protected].

St. Mary of the Annunciation Bereavement Ministry

10 Week Grief Support Group:

“FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS” One of North America's leading grief educators, Dr. Alan Wolfelt has written many books about healing in grief. In compassionate, down-to-earth language, Understanding Your Grief describes ten touch-stones—or trail markers—that are essential physical, emotional, cogni-tive, social, and spiritual signs for mourners to look for on their journey through grief. This book is his most comprehensive, covering the es-sential lessons that mourners have taught him in his three decades of working with the bereaved. Think of your grief as a wilder-ness—a vast, inhospitable for-est. You must journey through this wilderness. To find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing. This weekly group will meet at St. Mary of the Annunciation for 10 consecutive Thursdays, September 15–November 17, 2016, 6:30–8:00pm. The group size is limited so register now! The $30.00 registration fee covers the cost of the two books. To register, contact Diane Mulroe at the St. Mary parish office. Prayer for Vocations God of Love, You call us to live in your love through the grace of our baptism.

Bless us with the courage to carry out the mission of Jesus. Grant us open and generous hearts to see the needs of others and to respond with compassion.

May the Church be blest with women and men who are dedicated to you through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and the consecrated life.

It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselves to you now and forever. Amen.

Ministry of Care…What Is It? Visits to Homes: Do you know a friend, neighbor or relative who is no longer able to attend Mass? Many homebound persons participate in the Mass by watching the Mass on TV. But they miss a key element by not being able to

receive the Eucharist. We have a ministry which brings prayers and Communion to the homebound called “Ministry of Care” or MOC. Min-isters of Care typically visit on a weekly basis and thereby bring the love and support of the community of St. Mary’s Church to them. All Ministers of Care have received archdiocesan training and participate in ongoing faith formation opportunities. If you or someone you know is interested in having a Minister of Care come and visit, please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office. [email protected]
